A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Health Care Needs Of Undocumented Latino Day Laborers Living In Las Vegas, Nevada, Siboney Zelaya
A Qualitative Study Of The Perceived Health Care Needs Of Undocumented Latino Day Laborers Living In Las Vegas, Nevada, Siboney Zelaya
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Undocumented (unauthorized, illegal) immigrants seek employment on the street corners near home improvement stores offering their services and selling their labor to the employers who arrive in their cars or trucks to pick them up for a few hours of hard work. The number of undocumented immigrants in the United States continues to increase. By percentage of overall population, Nevada has one of the largest shares of undocumented immigrants in the United States, and the bulk of that percentage is Latino.
The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study is to gain knowledge about undocumented Latino day laborers' perceived health …
Aging Populations And Management: From The Editors, Carol T. Kulik, Susan Ryan, Sarah Harper, Gerard George
Aging Populations And Management: From The Editors, Carol T. Kulik, Susan Ryan, Sarah Harper, Gerard George
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The human population is aging at a rate “without parallel in the history of humanity” (United Nations, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division, 2001: xxviii). The aging of the world population is driven by two trends. First, there has been a dramatic increase in life expectancy. In the United Kingdom, for example, 10 million people are over 65 years old (roughly, 1 in 6 individuals). The latest projections are for 5½ million more elderly people in 20 years' time, and the number will have nearly doubled to around 19 million (roughly, 1 in 4 individuals) by 2050 (Cracknell, …

Designing For Understanding: Helping Older Adults Understand Over-The-Counter Medication Information, Aqueasha Martin
All Dissertations
This research is motivated by some of the challenges faced by the healthcare community in communicating health information to the public and the potential for user-centered technology design to address some of these limitations. Each year, thousands die or are injured due to adverse-drug events due to both prescription and over-the-counter medications. The integration of technology has improved the incidence rate for adverse-drug events due to prescription medications. Similarly, personal health records and other consumer-based health applications have been shown to be beneficial for helping individuals manage their health. Despite this growing body of research, little to no research has …

Ageism, Honesty, And Trust, Eric Schniter, Timothy W. Shields
ESI Publications
Age-based discrimination is considered undesirable, yet we know little about age stereotypes and their effects on honesty and trust. To investigate this aspect of ageism, we presented older adults (over age 50) and younger adults (under age 25) with incentivized belief elicitation tasks about anticipated interaction behaviors and then a series of same, different, and unknown-aged group interactions in a strategic-communication game. All adults shared consensual stereotypes about uncooperative younger adults and cooperative older adults that demonstrated “wisdom of crowds”. While the out-group was consistently stereotyped as relatively different and more dishonest and suspicious than observed to be, the in-group …

Positive Quality Of Life Factors Identified From Efnep Participant Stories, Wanda M. Koszewski, Megan Hlavacek, Kathryn Yerxa, Sandra B. Procter
Journal of Extension
EFNEP collects stories from participants and educators regarding the program's impacts. The objective of the study reported here was to qualitatively analyze these stories in the context of quality of life. Researchers analyzed 1,057 stories by identifying key words and developing codes to best describe the information. After analysis, codes were grouped into themes. The research demonstrated that EFNEP is perceived to have positively affected the quality of life of participants. These results not only confirm broader EFNEP benefits, but suggest an additional variable (quality of life) to consider as a measureable outcome.
Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup’S (Grow) Review Of Grandfamilies Support Groups: An Examination Of Concepts, Goals, Outcomes And Measures, Kerry A. Littlewood
Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup’S (Grow) Review Of Grandfamilies Support Groups: An Examination Of Concepts, Goals, Outcomes And Measures, Kerry A. Littlewood
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
A support group is the most widely used intervention for grandparents and other relatives raising children. Support groups require few resources to establish and are relatively inexpensive to implement. Despite the popularity of support groups for grandfamilies, there is little evidence evaluating their effectiveness to improve the lives of its members. In response to this issue and to support outcome-based research in the field, the Grandfamilies Outcome Workgroup (GrOW) was established. This study highlights GrOW’s review of the literature on the effectiveness of support groups for grandfamilies. Next, the GrOW Inventory of Support Groups (GrOW Inventory) was developed to explore …

The Rewards Of Caring For Grandchildren: Black Canadian Grandmothers Who Are Custodial Parents, Co-Parents, And Extensive Babysitters, Esme Fuller-Thomson, Sarah Serbinski, Leanne Mccormack
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Grandparent caregiving is a growing phenomenon in both the United States and Canada. The burgeoning research on the topic has focused on custodial grandparents with an emphasis on negative aspects including poor physical and mental health outcomes for older adults. Less attention has been paid to the rewards of grandparent caregiving and to different intensities of caregiving provision. This grounded theory qualitative study of 16 Black Caribbean Canadian grandmothers sought to address this gap in the literature. We examined three types of grandparent caregivers: custodial grandparents (n=7), co-parent grandparents (n=5) and extensive babysitters (n=4). The average age of the children …

Badge It! Using Digital Badges To Certify Information Literacy Skills Within Disciplinary Curriculum, Emily Ford, Jost Lottes, Betty T. Izumi, Dawn Richardson
Library Instruction West 2014
As technology in higher education rapidly changes, new pedagogical tools are being tested, developed, and implemented. Digital badges systems are one such tool that can be used to certify student skills and competencies, including information literacy skills. Despite new teaching technologies and pedagogical approaches, it remains difficult for instruction librarians to lead experimentation. As a result, librarians depend on collaborative relationships with disciplinary faculty to experiment with pedagogies and tools like badging. At Portland State University, however, librarians are leading a collaborative digital badges project with Community Health Faculty to develop, deliver, assess, and track student achievements in information literacy. …

Uncovering Ed: A Qualitative Analysis Of Personal Blogs Managed By Individuals With Eating Disorders, Jacqueline Gies, Sara Martino
The Qualitative Report
Previous studies have investigated the potential harmful effects of pro-eating disorder (ED) websites. Websites, such as personal blogs, may contain eating disorder content that may hold important information as well and must be considered. Fifteen blogs hosted by the site “Tumblr” were qualitatively analyzed. Each blog owner was anonymous and all were female. Ten main themes were extracted using grounded theory: interaction, negative self-worth, mind and body disturbances, pictures, eating disorders, suicide, diet, exercise, stats, and recovery. Additional themes also appeared in the study. Results indicate that although each individual blog is unique to its owner, common concepts existed among …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the experience and perspectives of registered dietitians (RDs) practicing as public health nutrition professionals, in meeting their continuing professional education (CPE) and professional learning needs in their workplace, and the relationship to adult learning theories. Adult learning theories and strategies reviewed include andragogy, self-directed learning, transformational learning, experiential learning, informal and incidental learning, and critical reflective practice. Data was collected during a nine-month period from RDs within a county public health nutrition department. Data collection methods included observation, document elicitation using the participant's professional development portfolio, semi-structured interviews, and artifact …

Service Learning At Community Colleges: Synthesis, Critique, And Recommendations For Future Research, Amanda Taggart, Gloria Crisp
Teacher Education and Leadership Faculty Publications
The purpose of this paper is to review and critique empirical work done, to date, specific to service learning experiences at the community college level. A review of the literature was conducted in order to examine the empirical work that has been developed regarding service learning, a form of experiential learning, at community colleges. The narrative defines service learning, describes types of service learning taking place on community college campuses, and synthesizes and critiques the service learning empirical work done to date. The review closes with specific recommendations for both researchers and practitioners regarding future research.

Using Experiential And Collaborative Methods With Undergraduates And Older Persons As Part Of An Introduction To Gerontology Course, Amy Ramsey, A. Nancy Mendoza, Joyce Weil
PRISM: A Journal of Regional Engagement
This study examines an Introduction to Gerontology course for undergraduate students that integrates experiential and collaborative learning experiences as part of a general course requirement. Experiential learning encourages students to go outside of the classroom and learn about aging from an older person in a field setting. The collaborative group approach is designed to have peers work together in the course. This study used qualitative methods to examine undergraduates’ learning experiences as a result of participation in a multiple-interview and groupwork-based project through their enrollment in the Introduction to Gerontology course. Content analysis was used to analyze multiple sources of …
Performance Deficits In Aging Human Service Settings And A Behavior Analytic Approach To Remediation, Kendra F. Johnson
Performance Deficits In Aging Human Service Settings And A Behavior Analytic Approach To Remediation, Kendra F. Johnson
Research Papers
The staff members working in all human service settings have major effects on the populations in which they are working. Staff enjoyment and their preferences also play a role in their work performance. Work performance, specifically in aging settings, is an understudied area of applied behavioral research. Thus, giving focus to identifying performance deficits may assist with increasing job task enjoyment and improving job performance in human service related positions, especially when incentives for job performance is not available due to limited budgets of non-profit organizations. Studies, to date, have focused much attention on preference instead of actual job performance. …

The Impact Of Fear Of Falling On Functional Independence Among Older Adults Receiving Home Health Services, Katherine A. Lawson, Eugenia Catalina Gonzalez
The Open Journal of Occupational Therapy
Background: Falls are the fifth leading cause of death for adults aged 65 years and older. Several intrinsic and extrinsic fall risk factors have been identified, butthere is less understanding of the impact of a fear of falling on falls. Seventy percent of recent fallers and 40% percent of non-fallers report a fear of falling. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between a fear of falling and a history of falls, as well as the impact on the functional independence of community-dwelling older adults receiving home health services.
Methods: The participants completed the …

Tracing The Origins Of Success: Implications For Successful Aging, Nora M. Peterson, Peter Martin
Tracing The Origins Of Success: Implications For Successful Aging, Nora M. Peterson, Peter Martin
French Language and Literature Papers
Purpose of the Study: This paper addresses the debate about the use of the term “successful aging” from a humanistic, rather than behavioral, perspective. It attempts to uncover what success, a term frequently associated with aging, is: how can it be defined and when did it first come into use? In this paper, we draw from a number of humanistic perspectives, including the historical and linguistic, in order to explore the evolution of the term “success.” We believe that words and concepts have deep implications for how concepts (such as aging) are culturally and historically perceived.

Mobile Humanoid Agent With Mood Awareness For Elderly Care, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Mobile Humanoid Agent With Mood Awareness For Elderly Care, Di Wang, Ah-Hwee Tan
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Human, especially elderly, require frequent attention, continuous companionship, and deep understanding from the others. To provide more specific and appropriate tender care to the elderly, knowing their affective states is a great advantage. Recent work on human emotion recognition shows promising results that the expressive emotion can be successfully captured through visual, audio, and keyboard or touchpad stroke pattern signals. Furthermore, human activities are shown to be accurately recognizable with context by nonintrusive sensors within or connected to the smartphones. In this paper, we propose a computational model to characterize the affective states of the elderly based on the recognizable …
