Toying With Fantasy: The Postmodern Playground Of Terry Pratchett's Discworld Novels, Daniel Luthi Oct 2014

Toying With Fantasy: The Postmodern Playground Of Terry Pratchett's Discworld Novels, Daniel Luthi

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Attempts to discover exactly how Terry Pratchett manages to get away with violating the rules of the fantasy tradition laid out in Tolkien’s “On Fairy-stories.” Pratchett consistently revels in the absurdity of Discworld as a concept, breaks the fourth wall, and disrupts Tolkien’s proviso against satirizing magic itself; and yet the Discworld sails on, imperturbable. Pratchett’s concept of narrative imperative is discussed as one of the keys to the success of his invented world.

Bradley Garrett: Explore Everything: Place-Hacking The City, Kevin F. Steinmetz Oct 2014

Bradley Garrett: Explore Everything: Place-Hacking The City, Kevin F. Steinmetz

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"While most people seem content to enjoy the front-stages of everyday life– going to safe spaces deemed appropriate for occupation–there are those who are enthralled by the backstage spaces of contemporary urban landscapes. In Explore Everything: Place-Hacking the City, Bradley Garrett details his research into urban explorers, a subculture that delves into the hidden (or hidden in plain sight) city spaces such as abandoned urban ruins, underground tunnels, and imposing skyscrapers. To date, this work is most likely the definitive study of urban exploration (sometimes referred to as UE) and should be the starting point for anyone from student …

Exploring The Roles Of Redemption, Agency, And Motivation In Two Groups Of High-Risk Felony Probationers, Steve Boehm Oct 2014

Exploring The Roles Of Redemption, Agency, And Motivation In Two Groups Of High-Risk Felony Probationers, Steve Boehm

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Problem-solving courts were developed in the 1980s and 1990s to reduce recidivism and probation revocations. The first problem- solving courts focused primarily on treating drug abuse, but the missions have expanded to include issues such as domestic violence and the problems faced by returning war veterans. Research has found these courts to be generally effective, but there is wide variation in their outcomes, and there are questions about the perceptions of problem-solving court participants compared to other probationers. This study presents qualitative analysis of interview data for a group of problem-solving court probationers (n = 19) and a similar group …

An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo Oct 2014

An Application Of Space Syntax To Critical Working Space Analysis: The Case Of Building Construction, Li-Wen Wu, Sy-Jye Guo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The definition of critical space used in this paper is identical to the critical path definition employed in the critical path method (CPM). This definition implies that there is no extra floating space; thus, any conflict is expected to result in productivity loss. Space syntax is a theory developed to reveal the hidden interrelationships between spaces using architectural diagrams. Existing studies have indicated the potential for space syntax to identify critical spaces and to assist in reducing conflicts leading to productivity loss. However, there is not yet quantitative evidence demonstrating whether the quantitative parameters of relative convenience and relative control …

Mythlore: A Journal of J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Charles Williams, and Mythopoeic Literature

Alexei Kondratiev Student Paper Award, Mythcon 45. Examines traditional political structures, theories of how they work, and how they play out in Tolkien’s Middle-earth among fantastic races and landscapes. Especially intriguing is the way in which the immortality of some races and individuals affects the power balance.

A Dangerous Servant And A Fearful Master: Why Florida’S Prescribed Fire Statute Should Be Amended, Stephen Mccullers Oct 2014

A Dangerous Servant And A Fearful Master: Why Florida’S Prescribed Fire Statute Should Be Amended, Stephen Mccullers

Florida Law Review

Fire will not be denied its opportunity to burn through Florida’s forests. The citizens of Florida, however, can accept the responsibility of deciding how the forest will burn. Fire can be purposefully ignited under exact weather conditions, acting as a controlled but dangerous servant with a slim chance of escape or harm. Or, if Floridians refuse to accept any responsibility in proactively managing forest fire, nature will determine when the forest will burn. The fire will be a fearful master, raging through the forest with the potential to cause great harm to people, property, and the environment.

In recognition of …

Hiv Testing Implementation In Two Urban Cities: Practice, Policy And Perceived Barriers, Camden J. Hallmark, Jennifer Skillicorn, Thomas P. Giordano, Jessica A. Davila, Marlene Mcneese, Nestor Rocha, Avemaria Smith, Stacey Cooper, Amanda D. Castel

Epidemiology Faculty Publications

Background

Although funding has supported the scale up of routine, opt-out HIV testing in the US, variance in implementation mechanisms and barriers in high-burden jurisdictions remains unknown.

Methods

We conducted a survey of health care organizations in Washington, DC and Houston/Harris County to determine number of HIV tests completed in 2011, policy and practices associated with HIV testing, funding mechanisms, and reported barriers to testing in each jurisdiction and to compare results between jurisdictions.

Results

In 2012, 43 Houston and 35 DC HIV-testing organizations participated in the survey. Participants represented 85% of Department of Health-supported testers in DC and 90% …

Learning To Escape: Prison Education, Rehabilitation And The Potential For Transformation, Cormac Behan Oct 2014

Learning To Escape: Prison Education, Rehabilitation And The Potential For Transformation, Cormac Behan

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This article examines motivations behind participation in education based on interviews with Irish prisoners. It begins by considering the relationship between education and rehabilitation, especially the latter’s re-emergence in a more authoritarian form. Drawing on results from the research, this article argues that the educational approach, culture and atmosphere are particularly important in creating a learning environment in prison. It makes the case that educational spaces which allow students to voluntarily engage in different types of learning, at their own pace, at a time of their choosing, can be effective in encouraging prisoners to engage in critical reflection and subsequently, …

Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright Oct 2014

Identities, Education And Reentry: Performative Spaces And Enclosures, Randall Wright

Journal of Prison Education and Reentry (2014-2023)

This is part one of a two-part interdisciplinary paper that examines the various forces (discourses and institutional processes) that shape prisoner-student identities. Discourses of officers from a correctional website serve as a limited, single case study of discourses that ascribe dehumanized, stigmatized identities to "the prisoner." Two critical concepts, performative spaces and identity enclosures, are purposed as potential critical, emancipatory terms to explore the prisoner-student identity work that occurs in schools and elsewhere in prison. This paper is guided by the effort to assist teachers to act as transformative intellectuals in prisons and closed-custody settings by becoming more aware of …

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates cyanobacteria on two lakes in McLean County, Illinois from the months of August to October. Data was collected every other week.Cyanobacteria are prokaryotes that may be unicellular, colonial or filamentous in form. These cells can be known to be toxic or non-toxic. The factors that control the reproduction of cyanobacteria are the temperature and nutrients of nitrogen and phosphorus. These microorganisms are located in marine and terrestrial settings worldwide. The focus of this study was at two man-made lakes which are Lake Bloomington and Lake Evergreen. Sampling and collection of data was done on two lakes to …

The Pivot: American Involvement In Asia, Marisa Tillman Oct 2014

The Pivot: American Involvement In Asia, Marisa Tillman

Honors Student Works

Part I: On November 17th, 2011, President Obama addressed the Australian parliament and presented a plan to shift American attention towards the Asia-Pacific region (Beitelman 2012, 1086). This is a policy known as the Pivot, which represents one of the most important issues of our time: that of America’s relations with China. China is becoming a much more powerful and important player in global politics and global economy, in fact China is growing at a faster rate than any other country in history (Schake 2014). The Pivot looks to lock in a substantially increased investment in the Asia Pacific region …

The Politics Of Hpv Vaccination Advocacy: Effects Of Source Expertise On Effectiveness Of A Pro-Vaccine Message, Roger Gans Oct 2014

The Politics Of Hpv Vaccination Advocacy: Effects Of Source Expertise On Effectiveness Of A Pro-Vaccine Message, Roger Gans

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

The Politics of HPV Vaccination Advocacy:

Effects of Source Expertise on Effectiveness of a Pro-Vaccine Message

Persistent public resistance to an apparently safe, effective and life-saving public health practice such as HPV vaccination illustrates a significant issue in the communication of behavioral recommendations based on evidence-based scientific data and consensus views of scientific and medical experts. This study examines the influence of source expertise on pro-HPV-vaccine advocacy messaging effectiveness among audiences of differing political ideologies. The findings support prior research indicating greater resistance to HPV vaccination among political conservatives. Subjects who self-identified politically as Centrists and Conservatives were significantly less …

Information Literacy Scaffolds In The 9-12 Classroom, Kelly Crisp Paynter Oct 2014

Information Literacy Scaffolds In The 9-12 Classroom, Kelly Crisp Paynter

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Despite being dubbed the Digital Generation, information literacy skills do not come automatically to high school students. Teachers and library media specialists must work together to provide quality strategies and scaffolds that help students evaluate sources authentically. Whether modeling the digital search process, creating pathfinders to direct students toward authoritative sources, or initiating discussions with students about quality resources, the library media specialist can become a valuable instructional partner to the classroom teacher.

The presenter, who has served as a high school media specialist, will discuss specific lesson plans she has co-taught with classroom teachers (as time allows). Topics may …
