Operating An Interior Design Firm In Saudi Arabia: Opportunities And Challenges For Professional Female Employees, Najah Alsaffaf Oct 2014

Operating An Interior Design Firm In Saudi Arabia: Opportunities And Challenges For Professional Female Employees, Najah Alsaffaf

Theses and Dissertations

Empowering women is the aim of the research. Saudi Arabia is the research location and interior design is the subject of the investigation. Saudi Arabia is on the path of empowering women through education and facilitating job opportunities. There is vast research about entrepreneurship and obstacles that women face in Saudi Arabia, but there is no evidence of research on the interior design field in Saudi Arabia in both education and job opportunities. Finding out that the art and design scene is thriving in education indicates that there would be a need for creating jobs and employment options for design …

Mapping Licit And Illicit Mining Activity In The Madre De Dios Region Of Peru, Arthur Elmes, Josué Gabriel Yarlequé Ipanaqué, John Rogan, Nicholas Cuba, Anthony J. Bebbington Oct 2014

Mapping Licit And Illicit Mining Activity In The Madre De Dios Region Of Peru, Arthur Elmes, Josué Gabriel Yarlequé Ipanaqué, John Rogan, Nicholas Cuba, Anthony J. Bebbington

Geography

Since the early 2000s, the Madre de Dios Region of southern Peru has experienced rapid expansion of both licit and illicit mining activities, in the form of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). ASM typically takes place in remote, inaccessible locations and is therefore difficult to monitor in situ. This paper explores the utility of Landsat-5 imagery via decision tree classification to determine ASM locations in Madre de Dios. Spectral mixture analysis was used to unmix Landsat imagery, using WorldView and QuickBird l imagery to aid spectral endmember selection and validate AMS maps. The ASM maps had an overall area-weighted accuracy …

Lake Flooding And Synoptic Weather-Type Frequency At Devils Lake, North Dakota, Usa, Between 1965 And 2010, Paul E. Todhunter, Emily A. Knish Oct 2014

Lake Flooding And Synoptic Weather-Type Frequency At Devils Lake, North Dakota, Usa, Between 1965 And 2010, Paul E. Todhunter, Emily A. Knish

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

Since the spring of 1993, the water surface elevation at Devils Lake, a terminal lake in eastern North Dakota, USA, has risen by 8.8 m, producing more than 1 billion USD in direct flood damages. We examine the relationship between weather-type frequencies at Bismarck, North Dakota, and lake volume changes from 1965 to 2010 using the Spatial Synoptic Classification (SSC) system. First, we find statistically significant changes in the frequency of selected weather types over both annual and seasonal time periods. This indicates a trend toward in - creased advection of more humid weather types that is consistent with the …

A Comparison Of Student Achievement In The Second Language Acquisition Of Spanish In Both Total Online And Traditional College Level Courses, Vanessa P. F. Crump

Georgia Educational Research Association Conference

This quantitative, comparable study examined student achievement in online and traditional on-campus college level courses in SPAN 1001 and SPAN 1002 through an ex-post facto model of study. This area of study yielded little research and provided a unique view into course achievement. In this particular study, there were two types of final exams examined, the final oral exam and the final written exam. The study took place at a two-year college in middle Georgia. The student population included college level students that enrolled in the courses over a six-semester period. The students varied in age, previous foreign language background, …

The Jurisprudence Of Nature: The Importance Of Defining What Is "Natural", Jill M. Fraley Oct 2014

The Jurisprudence Of Nature: The Importance Of Defining What Is "Natural", Jill M. Fraley

Catholic University Law Review

Informal regulations defining nature, natural, and organic have proliferated across diverse fields of law from patents to agriculture, from taxation to gemstones. The unwritten jurisprudence of defining nature is primarily a story of the struggle to isolate mankind’s manipulations and interventions, creating a man-nature dichotomy that frustrates more than it explicates. This failure to define nature continues with the Supreme Court’s recent Myriad decision, which struggles to define the law of nature exception to patentability, highlighting the challenge of measuring levels of human intervention and manipulation. Our dichotomous definitions do not generate neat, binary answers, but rather complicated scales of …

The Effect Of Social Media On Public Awareness And Extra-Judicial Effects: The Gay Marriage Cases And Litigating For New Rights, Sarahfina Aubrey Peterson Oct 2014

The Effect Of Social Media On Public Awareness And Extra-Judicial Effects: The Gay Marriage Cases And Litigating For New Rights, Sarahfina Aubrey Peterson

Dissertations and Theses

When the Supreme Court grants new rights, public awareness is a crucial part of enforcement. Gerald N. Rosenberg and Michael J. Klarman famously criticized minority rights organizations for attempting to gain new rights through the judiciary. The crux of their argument relied heavily on the American media's scanty coverage of Court issues and subsequent low public awareness of Court cases. Using the 2013 United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry rulings as a case study, I suggest that the media environment has changed so much since Rosenberg and Klarman were writing that their theories warrant reconsideration. Minority rights groups …

Detroit Works Long-Term Planning Project: Engagement Strategies For Blending Community And Technical Expertise, Toni L. Griffin, Dan Cramer, Megan Powers

Publications and Research

In January 2013, civic leaders, community stakeholders, and residents came together to release Detroit Future City: 2012 Detroit Strategic Framework Plan, a guiding blueprint for transforming Detroit from its current state of population loss and excessive vacancy into a model for the reinvention of post-industrial American cities. Three years prior, the U.S. Census had reported that the city had lost 24% of its population over the last decade and had experienced a 20% increase in vacant and abandoned property, bringing total vacancy to roughly the size of Manhattan. In addition to physical and economic challenges, Detroiters had also acknowledged significant …

Background

Long-term homologous and temporary heterologous protection from dengue virus (DENV) infection may be mediated by neutralizing antibodies. However, neutralizing antibody titers (NTs) have not been clearly associated with protection from infection.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Data from two geographic cluster studies conducted in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand were used for this analysis. In the first study (2004–2007), cluster investigations of 100-meter radius were triggered by DENV-infected index cases from a concurrent prospective cohort. Subjects between 6 months and 15 years old were evaluated for DENV infection at days 0 and 15 by DENV PCR and IgM ELISA. In the second study (2009–2012), …

Integrated Monitoring Of Particle-Associated Transport Of Persistent Organic Pollutants (Pahs As Case Study) In Contrasting Catchments In Southwest Germany, Barbara Beckingham, Peter Grathwohl, Hermann Rügner, Marc Schwientek, Bertram Kuch, Bertram Kuch Oct 2014

Integrated Monitoring Of Particle-Associated Transport Of Persistent Organic Pollutants (Pahs As Case Study) In Contrasting Catchments In Southwest Germany, Barbara Beckingham, Peter Grathwohl, Hermann Rügner, Marc Schwientek, Bertram Kuch, Bertram Kuch

S.C. Water Resources Conference

Strongly sorbing hydrophobic pollutants such as polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are primarily subjected to particle-associated transport and thus are mobilized especially during high flow conditions when soils and sediments undergo erosion and urban runoff is intensified. Whereas soil pollutants reach rivers only slowly by erosion, untreated surface runoff from sealed urban space and stormwater releases are major immediate sources of particle bound pollutants. Chemical loads to rivers in general may increase with increasing population density or urban development of watersheds due to abundance of sources and impervious surface. Given the scope of anthropogenic impact, integrated and cost-effective strategies for containment …

Improving Hydrologic Predictions Of Distributed Watershed Model Via Uncertainty Quantification Of Evapotranspiration Methods, S Samadi, Dan L. Tufford, Greg J. Carbone

S.C. Water Resources Conference

Successful initialization and accurate estimation of evapotranspiration (ET) in the coastal plain landscapes are crucial for the prediction of hydrologic variables including streamflow, surficial aquifer lost and infiltration. The aim of this study is to examine the ability of Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to accurately represent the characterization of three potential ET methods (Priestley-Taylor (P-T), Penman–Monteith (P-M) and Hargreaves (HG)) using the Sequential Uncertainty FItting (SUFI-2) algorithm during 2003-2005 and 2006-2007 as calibration and validation intervals. The study area was the Waccamaw River watershed, a low-gradient coastal plain watershed in the southeastern US. The results indicated that in …
