For over one hundred years, American social structures have largely embraced two central principles—the innocence of children and the omniscience of adults. But as we now know from behavioral and development experts, adolescents—neither children nor adults—challenge such simplistic categories. In resisting binaries, adolescents represent a threat to the standard world order. But rather than simply accepting the fluid nature of adolescents and adolescence, American adults continually try to manage, regulate and control teens in ways that deny their agency, encroach upon their personhood, and impede social change. From outward appearance, to physical presence, to intimate communications and engagements, young people …
Going Back To The Drawing Board: Re-Entrenching The Higher Education Act To Restore Its Historical Policy Of Access, Twinette L. Johnson
Going Back To The Drawing Board: Re-Entrenching The Higher Education Act To Restore Its Historical Policy Of Access, Twinette L. Johnson
Journal Articles
This article explores both the historical entrenchment of the Higher Education Act (“HEA” or “the Act”) and ongoing attempts to retrench it. In it, I argue that Congress should return the HEA to its historical roots and enact reauthorizing legislation that will set the course for re-entrenching the Act and its historical policy. This re-entrenching will properly set the focus of the Act on providing widespread higher education access by creating and implementing new pathways (funding and otherwise) to that access.
In the article, I discuss the entrenchment of the HEA into American culture in an effort to understand the …
Three Essays On Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Derrick T. Jenniges
Three Essays On Cross-Border Mergers And Acquisitions, Derrick T. Jenniges
Theses and Dissertations--Economics
This dissertation consists of three essays on cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&As). The first essay studies horizontal and vertical investments between Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries, while the second essay examines how investment patterns vary by country development. The third essay estimates the effect of merger policy reform on cross-border M&A activity in Europe.
The first essay tests how well theories of horizontal and vertical foreign direct investment (FDI) explain observed patterns of cross-border M&As in OECD countries. Horizontal investment occurs when multinational firms produce in foreign countries to serve the foreign market, whereas vertical investment occurs …
An Integrated Environmental And Economic Modeling Framework For Technological Transitions, Randall Jackson
An Integrated Environmental And Economic Modeling Framework For Technological Transitions, Randall Jackson
Regional Research Institute Working Papers
There is an increasing demand for models that address both environment and economy, and that also estimate or forecast the impacts of introducing new and markedly different technologies from those already existing in the systems under study. Because most conventional models are calibrated to recent data characterizing current economic structure and conditions, their standard turn-key operation will need to be replaced by more comprehensive algorithms and procedures designed to explicitly accommodate shifts in technology and economic structure. This paper lays out one viable alternative for integrating environmental and economic modeling frameworks, and focuses specifically on one of the major challenges …

Migrant Entrepreneurship, Collective Violence And Xenophobia In South Africa (Migration Policy Series No. 67), Jonathan Crush, Sujata Ramachandran
International Migration Research Centre
The remarkable growth of informal migrant entrepreneurship in South Africa since 1990 would have been much lauded had it not been for the striking detail that the actors in question are seen as “foreigners” or “outsiders”. As such, they are uniformly viewed as undesirable and disadvantaging poor South African citizens. The growing presence of migrants in the informal sector has created various tensions in South Africa, including in government circles, ignoring the fact that in the free market economy of South Africa, immigrants and refugees, like citizens and commercial enterprises, would otherwise enjoy the freedom to establish, operate and expand …

Gastro-Topogrophy: Exploring Food-Related Placenames In Ireland, Máirtín Mac Con Iomaire
Articles
Most Irish people likely have little or no knowledge of the richness and variety of their ancestor’s diet before the arrival of the potato. For generations, food was considered far too common to be considered a field of study. Considering the primacy of food in people’s lives generally throughout history, it is logical that food be reflected in toponymic references to environment and landscape. This article taps into a wide range of material including poetry, prose, travellers’ reports, mythology, folklore, letters, shipping records, and archaeological evidence, both to contextualize the food-related placenames of Ireland, and to explore what Irish placenames …
Regulating Electronic Legal Support Across State And National Boundaries, Cassandra Burke Robertson
Regulating Electronic Legal Support Across State And National Boundaries, Cassandra Burke Robertson
Faculty Publications
Technology and globalization are changing the practice of law and creating new challenges for lawyer regulation. Middle-class litigants who struggle to afford legal services — but are comfortable using online resources — are increasingly seeking and finding legal support online. State and national boundaries dissolve in the online marketplace, making it easy for attorneys to provide services to litigants in other jurisdictions. Differences in national economies make it cost effective for both clients and lawyers to engage in transnational practice, so that attorneys in India and other jurisdictions can offer legal support and advice to American litigants for as little …

Have you ever considered a reality in which you had the ability to create an image of your liking? What body shape and height would you select? Hair color and texture? Eye color? Skin tone? In the 2009 science-fiction film the Surrogates, people do just that. They live their lives through surrogate robots of their choosing. If sociologists were to study this phenomenon, they would first observe the selections people made. Second, they would try to understand why people selected the features they did. How did they determine what their ideal characteristics should be? The explanations would be numerous, …

Off With His Head: The King Can Do No Wrong, Hurricane Katrina, And The Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, Christopher R. Dyess
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
Congress passed the Federal Tort Claims Act in 1946 to provide a legal remedy to citizens for torts committed by the Federal Government. Prior to the act, United States citizens were mostly prohibited from filing suits against the government for torts committed by government employees. However, Congress when passing the act realized that some government actions are the result of considered policy judgment for what is in the best interest of the citizenry as a whole. In order to prevent the government from being sued for such actions, Congress included what is referred to as the Discretionary Function Exception. If …

You Can’T Get There From Here: Implications Of The Walmart V. Dukes Decision For Addressing Second-Generation Discrimination, Roger W. Reinsch, Sonia Goltz
Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy
In Wal-Mart v. Dukes, the Supreme Court determined the plaintiffs had not shown, based on the evidence, that there were questions of law or fact common to the class. The allegedly discriminatory decisions had been made by individual supervisors at different stores who had been given discretion by Wal-Mart to make pay and promotion decisions. The Court stated the problem was that there was no specific evidence that all the discretionary decisions were made in a manner that reflected gender bias. This case not only reversed decades of court acceptance of social framework evidence in employment litigation but also …

Introduction
During the last century, much of the prairie within the Northern Great Plains has been plowed for cropland, planted with non-natives to maximize livestock production, or otherwise developed, making it one of the most threatened ecosystems in the United States. Within Nebraska, greater than 77% of the area of native mixed-grass prairie has been lost since European settlement (Samson and Knopf 1994). The National Park Service (NPS) plays an important role in preserving and restoring some of the last pieces of intact prairies within its boundaries. The stewardship goal of the NPS is to “preserve ecological integrity and cultural …

A Description Of Snack Foods In Select Ohio Schools: A Baseline Prior To Usda New Competitive Food Guidelines, Chukwudubem C. Obianagha
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Background: The proliferation of snack foods in school lunch programs has necessitated the USDA to regulate its consumption by implementing policies regarding its use. The competitive food guidelines were enacted in June 2013 through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act. This required development of federal nutritional guidelines snack foods had to meet in order to be considered a competitive food and thus sold in school lunchrooms.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to describe the current snack food offerings in select Ohio high schools, and to determine how these snack foods affect the consumption of healthier free and reduced meal …

Location Prediction Of Twitter Users Using Wikipedia, Revathy Krishnamurthy, Pavan Kapanipathi, Amit P. Sheth, Krishnaprasad Thirunarayan

The mining of user generated content in social media has proven very effective in domains ranging from personalization and recommendation systems to crisis management. The knowledge of online users locations makes their tweets more informative and adds another dimension to their analysis. Existing approaches to predict the location of Twitter users are purely data-driven and require large training data sets of geo-tagged tweets. The collection and modelling process of tweets can be time intensive. To overcome this drawback, we propose a novel knowledge based approach that does not require any training data. Our approach uses information in Wikipedia, about cities …

Alignment And Dataset Identification Of Linked Data In Semantic Web, Kalpa Gunaratna, Sarasi Lalithsena, Amit P. Sheth
Kno.e.sis Publications
The Linked Open Data (LOD) cloud has gained significant attention in the Semantic Web community over the past few years. With rapid expansion in size and diversity, it consists of over 800 interlinked datasets with over 60 billion triples. These datasets encapsulate structured data and knowledge spanning over varied domains such as entertainment, life sciences, publications, geography, and government. Applications can take advantage of this by using the knowledge distributed over the interconnected datasets, which is not realistic to find in a single place elsewhere. However, two of the key obstacles in using the LOD cloud are the limited support …

Hacking The Planet, The Dalai Lama, And You: Managing Technical Vulnerabilities In The Internet Through Polycentric Governance, Amanda Craig, Scott Shackelford
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
This Article analyzes key vulnerabilities in the Internet's infrastructure, protocols, and code, and how they may be better managed through interventions at multiple levels. In particular, this Article examines the concept of polycentric governance and its applicability to technical vulnerabilities in the Internet. This theory has been championed by proponents such as Nobel Laureate Elinor Ostrom and promotes self-organization and networking regulations at multiple levels to address an array of global issues, from urban crime, to climate change and cyber attacks. However, there has not yet been a consideration of the applicability of this framework to technical Internet vulnerabilities explicitly, …
Protecting Cultural Heritage By Strictly Scrutinizing Museum Acquisitions, Leila Alexandra Amineddoleh
Protecting Cultural Heritage By Strictly Scrutinizing Museum Acquisitions, Leila Alexandra Amineddoleh
Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal
There are many ways to protect cultural heritage as a valuable commodity. Although heightened security measures and extensive surveillance methods can deter theft, a more effective means for reducing theft is the elimination of the demand for black market art items. Trade in unprovenanced antiquities is a demand-driven crime; the market for illegal or undocumented items is driven by buyers’ wants. The most effective method of protection for cultural heritage is to eliminate the demand for black market for these precious objects, thereby reducing the market, a method known as the “market reduction approach.” There is a well-documented link between …

Cancer Trends And Risk Factors In Cyprus, Evi A. Farazi
Journal Articles: Epidemiology
Cyprus, a European Union member state, is a small island in the Mediterranean with a population approaching 900,000 people. Cancer is the second leading cause of death; more therapeutic options for any patient with the disease are available in a central oncology centre in the capital of the island (Nicosia) and fewer therapeutic options (e.g. chemotherapy and hormone therapy only) in a few other public hospitals. Palliative care is offered in several hospices and hospitals, although the field needs improvement. With regards to screening, a national breast cancer screening programme has been in place countrywide since 2007 and is offered …

(Sub)Urban Poverty And Regional Interest Convergence, Patience A. Crowder
Marquette Law Review
Poverty has expanded from America’s urban cores to its inner and outer suburban rings. In the midst of spreading hardship, new opportunities for confronting questions of regional equity are emerging, such as how best to govern our regional spaces for the benefit of all regional constituents, including the poor, middle class, and affluent. To date, governance theories have proven inadequate to this task. In the parlance of the current regional governance discourse, localists, regionalists, and new regionalists need a framework to make a reality of their seemingly disparate and inconsistent visions of local versus regional interests. Localists champion the autonomy …

Building Energy Index And Students’ Perceived Performance In Public University Buildings, S.Y. Sharifah Noor Nazim, M.A. Ati Rosemary, I. Muhammad Azzam
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Numerous studies have shown that students’ learning experience is closely associated with the physical comfort level of their teaching and learning environment. The different strategies or allocation of air-conditioning, mechanical ventilation (ACMV) and lighting systems contribute greatly to the energy performances in the buildings. This study explores the relationship between electricity consumption of the academic buildings of a public university in an urban context and its students’ perceived performance. It seeks to find the answer patterns from unsuspected subjects; whether there is a difference between a lower energy-use building and a higher energy-use building. To achieve the objective, the study …

Green Potential Rating Tool: An Assessment Of Green Potential For Conventional Buildings, S.Y. Sharifah Noor Nazim, M.A. Ati Rosemary, I. Muhammad Azzam
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Assessment of the green potentials in a conventional building is rarely discussed in past literature unlike other types of assessments, such as a building’s current performance and qualities. ‘Green potential’ is the capacity of a conventional building to be refurbished into a green building. This paper presents the development of a rating tool to assess green potentials of existing conventional buildings. The development process involves reviewing relevant literature on the existing assessment tools. The review focuses on identifying methods and indicators that can be adopted for the assessment of green potentials. It is discovered that while literature on green potential …

Investigating Stereotypes About The Target Language Country: A Case Of German Language Learners, L. Nikitina, Z. Mohd Don, S.C. Loh
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Language learners bring into the classroom a multitude of stereotypes about the target language country, culture and native speakers. Recognizing an important role that these images play in the process of learning a foreign language, several research studies have explored stereotypes held by language learners. For the most part, these studies were qualitative in nature and they mainly focused on the stereotype content. There is also a lack of studies that examine frequency and salience of the stereotypical images about Germany held by the learners of German. The current mixed methods study addresses these gaps. It extends research on stereotypes …
