Professor Zhang Ke, Chairman of the Department of Earth Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University, has asked us to write about some of our memories from our several visits to Sun Yat-sen University, as part of the 2014 celebration of the 90th anniversary of the founding of the university and the creation of the department. We are very pleased to do so and to include with our written comments copies of some photographs that we have taken during these visits. We have gone back through our notes, books, tourist maps, photo files, and other information that we have kept as souvenirs …

Teaching Comparative Political Thought: Joys, Pitfalls, Strategies, Significance, Stephen Salkever Jan 2014

Teaching Comparative Political Thought: Joys, Pitfalls, Strategies, Significance, Stephen Salkever

Political Science Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article reflects on my experience over the past twenty-five years in teaching undergraduate courses in comparative political theory, focusing primarily on texts from ancient China and ancient Greece. I focus on the promise and the difficulties of such courses, and offer suggestions for avoiding the latter, based upon my sense of the defining purpose of such teaching: not the development of a disciplinary specialty or sub-specialty, nor the theoretical promotion or underpinning of a political agenda, but as providing a key element of liberal education in a rapidly globalizing world.

Scalable Visualization Of Semantic Nets Using Power-Law Graphs, Ajaz Hussain, Khalid Latif, Aimal Tariq Rextin, Amir Hayat, Masoon Alam Jan 2014

Scalable Visualization Of Semantic Nets Using Power-Law Graphs, Ajaz Hussain, Khalid Latif, Aimal Tariq Rextin, Amir Hayat, Masoon Alam

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Scalability and performance implications of semantic net visualization techniques are open research challenges. This paper focuses on developing a visualization technique that mitigates these challenges. We present a novel approach that exploits the underlying concept of power-law degree distribution as many realistic semantic nets seems to possess a power law degree distribution and present a small world phenomenon. The core concept is to partition the node set of a graph into power and non-power nodes and to apply a modified force-directed method that emphasizes the power nodes which results in establishing local neighborhood clusters among power nodes. We also made refinements …

Exports, Imports, Government Consumption And Economic Growth In Upper-Middle Income Countries, Minh Dao Jan 2014

Exports, Imports, Government Consumption And Economic Growth In Upper-Middle Income Countries, Minh Dao

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Esfahani (1991) shows that the statistically significant correlation between export promotion and economic growth in semi-industrialized countries (SICs) has been mainly attributable to the role of exports in reducing import ‘shortages’, which have impeded output growth in these countries. As a result, export-promotion policies as a superior development strategy in SICs play an important role in those that cannot secure sufficient foreign aid or investment. Esfahani (1991) also develops a simultaneous equations model to address the simultaneity bias between GDP and export growth rates. In this article we extend the model developed by Esfahani (1991) by incorporating the contribution of …

Assessment Of International Tourists' Perception On Local Foods In Tanzania, John T. Mgonja, Kenneth F. Backman, Sheila J. Backman Jan 2014

Assessment Of International Tourists' Perception On Local Foods In Tanzania, John T. Mgonja, Kenneth F. Backman, Sheila J. Backman

Health, Education and Human Development Awards

Consumption of local food is broadly recognized as an essential part of tourists’ experience. Locally distinctive food can be important both as a tourism attraction in itself and in helping to shape the image of a destination. Local food experiences have the potential to contribute considerably to sustainable development, help maintain regional identities and support agricultural diversification. While local foods have the potential to reduce poverty in rural communities, their image and perception to tourists remain largely unexamined. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the way international tourists perceive local food in Tanzania. Data was collected using questionnaires …

Creating The Continuum: J. E. Wallace Wallin And The Role Of Clinical Psychology In The Emergence Of Public School Special Education In America, Philip M. Ferguson

Education Faculty Articles and Research

This paper reviews the history of the continuum of services in intellectual disability programs. The emergence of public school special education in the United States in the first two decades of the 20th century is used as a case study of this history by focusing on events and personalities connected to the St. Louis Public Schools. Using Annual Reports from the era along with the abundant publications and personal papers of J.E. Wallace Wallin, the author explores how the growing class of specialists in clinical psychology and psychometrics gained a foothold in the schools as educational gatekeepers for student placements …

A Narrative Inquiry Exploring The Career Paths Of Two Teachers Of Developmental Reading In Oregon Community Colleges, Dana Sitton Anderson

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to discover the pathways taken by two participants as they became developmental reading instructors in higher education in Oregon. What qualified them as teachers of developmental reading in higher education? A review of the literature resulted in no research journal articles on the topics of training, preparation, or credentialing of developmental reading teachers in higher education. With no published research discovered, narrative inquiry presented an appropriate method to begin to gather and analyze data. Two developmental reading teachers from community colleges in Oregon were selected to record their stories in interviews and …

Business Lawyering In The Crowdfunding Era, Joan Macleod Heminway Jan 2014

Business Lawyering In The Crowdfunding Era, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

Crowdfunding is all the rage in conversations about small business finance. Yet, as with many other rapidly developing business innovations, practicing lawyers were, perhaps, secondary players in the development of business models for crowdfunding. The advent of crowdfunding (and crowdfund investing, in particular) has exposed fault lines in business lawyering. This short Article defines the crowdfunding era, highlights a few examples of observed lawyering lapses, and, in concluding, offers a brief, preliminary assessment of possible sources of these dislocations and best practices. The conclusion also expresses a related cautionary note about the need for lawyers to redouble their efforts at …

Place-Names In Mexico-Tenochtitlan. Ethnohistory 61, No. 2 (Spring 2014), Pp. 329-355., Barbara E. Mundy

Art History and Music Faculty Publications

The place-names that residents of the Mexica capital of Tenochtitlan (today Mexico City) gave to their city were both descriptive of topography and commemorative of history. Largely efaced from the Spanish historical register, Mexico City’s Nahuatl place-names were rescued from historical oblivion by José Antonio Alzate in the eighteenth century and again by Alfonso Caso in the twentieth. However, efacement is not equal to extinction, and this article argues for the continued use, even creation, of Nahuatl place-names into the eighteenth century. It suggests that the scholar’s desire to use place-names as an index to a pre-Hispanic past has obscured …

Making A ‘Hydropower Nation’: Subjectivity, Mobility, And Work In The Nepalese Hydroscape, Austin Lord Jan 2014

Making A ‘Hydropower Nation’: Subjectivity, Mobility, And Work In The Nepalese Hydroscape, Austin Lord

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This essay focuses ethnographic attention on changing patterns of subjectivity, livelihood, and agency co-arising within the production of Nepal's imagined hydropower future. As the projects and processes of hydropower development proliferate across the physical and human geographies of Nepal they produce many different kinds of risk and opportunity, as well as labor, mobility, and 'project-affected people'. Combining empirical and visual methods, this essay describes how these lived hydroscapes are shaped by shifting concepts of locality, belonging, citizenship, and 'affectedness' that are constantly evolving in response to an entanglement of aspirations and future-making projects.

Background Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac dysrhythmia and contributes significantly to health care expenditures. We sought to assess the frequency and predictors of hospitalization in patients with AF. Methods The ORBIT-AF registry is a prospective, observational study of outpatients with AF enrolled from June 29, 2010, to August 9, 2011. The current analysis included 9,484 participants with 1-year follow-up. Multivariable, logistic regression was used to identify baseline characteristics that were associated with first cause-specific hospitalization. Results Overall, 31% of patients with AF studied (n = 2,963) had 1 or more hospitalizations per year and 10% (n = …

Journal Articles

Background-Physicians treating patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) must weigh the benefits of anticoagulation in preventing stroke versus the risk of bleeding. Although empirical models have been developed to predict such risks, the degree to which these coincide with clinicians' estimates is unclear. Methods and Results-We examined 10 094 AF patients enrolled in the Outcomes Registry for Better Informed Treatment of AF (ORBIT-AF) registry between June 2010 and August 2011. Empirical stroke and bleeding risks were assessed by using the congestive heart failure, hypertension, age >= 75 years, diabetes mellitus, and previous stroke or transient ischemic attack (CHADS(2)) and Anticoagulation and …

Searching For The Determinants Of Climate Change Interest, Patrick Cavanagh, Corey Lang, Xinran Li, Haoran Miao, John David Ryder

A meaningful CO2 mitigation policy is unlikely at the national level in the United States. What is currently happening and what is much more likely to occur in the future is city and regional level efforts of mitigation and adaptation. This paper aims to understand the geographic and socioeconomic characteristics of metropolitan areas and regions that lead to engagement with the issue of climate change. We use geographically explicit, internet search data from Google to measure information seeking behavior, which we take to translate into engagement, attention and interest. Our spatial hotspot analysis creates a map that potentially could be …
