A Persistent Quandary: The Rural School Improvement Project, 1953-1957, Richard E. Day, Lindsey N. Devries, Amanda L. Hoover

Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Berea College's Rural School Improvement Project worked directly with more than 5,000 children and 63 teaching fellows in 39 different schools over 13 counties, and one independent school district, involving 10 county school supervisors. Project estimates claimed an indirect impact on approximately 45,000 children within the RSIP school districts. The RSIP represented the thinking of national leaders of rural education in the 1950s who promoted improved administration of the schools combined with an active community engagement program based on “full respect for human personality” and “shared judgments.” Following so many decades of poverty and isolation, it is no easy task …

Manella, Pujals & Co. V. Barry, 7 U.S. 415 (1806), Nicole Whitecar

Legal History Publications

Manella v. Barry highlights issues of agency and contract interpretation in the international maritime trade context. In the midst of America’s entry into the Quasi-War with France, a Baltimore shipping merchant brokered a large tobacco trade with a Spanish firm and experienced the risks of conducting trade over the high seas during wartime. Three out of seven ships were captured, and the Spanish firm sought to recover from the Baltimore merchant for the price of the lost cargo. Both the Circuit Court of Maryland and John Marshall’s Supreme Court sided with James Barry, holding that the Baltimore merchant was not …

On The Edge: The New Orientalism In American Advertising, Vivian Dai Jan 2014

On The Edge: The New Orientalism In American Advertising, Vivian Dai

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis explores how Asianness is portrayed in contemporary magazine advertising to the American public. Drawing on writings about Orientalist media depictions, my analysis of print advertisements shows that Orientalism is still evolving. While older forms of Orientalism offer Western constructions of the East with exoticized nostalgia or “yellow peril,” new forms use Asian bodies to represent the East within the West with continued and adapted stereotypes. I find that, while Asian bodies have gained proportional and inclusive representation, contemporary print advertising still positions them as marginal. I argue that Asian models are used to signal edginess, affluence, and futurism, …

Bangalore: Urban Development And Environmental Injustice, Mayrah Udvardi Jan 2014

Bangalore: Urban Development And Environmental Injustice, Mayrah Udvardi

Honors Thesis Collection

This thesis bridges the transnational discourses on environmental justice and urban social inequality through an in depth analysis of Bangalore, India. I define environmental justice as the meaningful participation in the development of the environment and the fair access to that environment across peoples regardless of difference. Although gaining traction in other global cities, environmental justice has not been considered in Indian cities because the conceptualization of the “environment” is pragmatically restricted to rural areas. I ground this thesis in three core arguments: (1) the natural environment and built environment exist in a hybrid form in both cities and rural …

Educating For Femininity? Reform Of Working And Middle Class Girls' Education In Victorian England, Daisy Dowdall Jan 2014

Educating For Femininity? Reform Of Working And Middle Class Girls' Education In Victorian England, Daisy Dowdall

Honors Thesis Collection

Working and middle-class girls’ education underwent significant reform in Victorian England. These reforms have been widely studied, with scholars divided into two broad historiographical schools: one that emerged in the late 1970s and places emphasis on the theory behind the reform to argue that little changed, and one that developed around 1990 and focuses on tangible practical change to demonstrate that a transformation did indeed occur.

The purpose of this thesis is to bridge the gap between these two bodies of scholarship, examining the significance of girls’ educational reform from the subjective positions of some working-class and middle-class girls, as …

A Decade Later: An Evaluation Of The Longer-Term Impacts Of A Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer, Emma Rackstraw Jan 2014

A Decade Later: An Evaluation Of The Longer-Term Impacts Of A Honduran Conditional Cash Transfer, Emma Rackstraw

Honors Thesis Collection

The simplicity of giving money to the poor for a specific and pre-approved purpose appeals to many stakeholders in the field of development— particularly policymakers and economists. In education policy, conditional cash transfers have been effective in improving school attendance and enrollment, as well as lowering child labor supply. However, the effects of CCTs have only been studied after a relatively short period of time after the transfer. The ultimate goal of investment in education is to get a return on that investment through an improvement in children’s long-term wellbeing. This thesis captures these effects on long-term educational and labor …

21st Century Orientals: The Displacement Of Eastern Identities In Contemporary Hollywood Adaptation, Annie Wang Jan 2014

21st Century Orientals: The Displacement Of Eastern Identities In Contemporary Hollywood Adaptation, Annie Wang

Honors Thesis Collection

In an increasingly globalized world, contemporary Hollywood has capitalized on sustained interest in Eastern cultures in the West by adapting popular novels, television shows, video games, and graphic novels into big budget, feature-length films with all-star casts headed by some of the world’s most acclaimed directors. However, such adaptations have historically been mired in racially-charged stereotypes that displace and absent Asian bodies and voices from American popular visual media.

This thesis examines how recent fantasy-adventure blockbusters such as ‘Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time’ (2010, dir. Mike Newell), ‘The Last Airbender’ (2010, dir. M. Night Shyamalan), and ‘Cloud Atlas’ …

An Assessment Of Resiliency And Life Satisfaction In High School-Aged Students In Belize, Rachel Youngblom, Daniel Houlihan, Julene Douty Nolan

Psychology Department Publications

This study assesses resiliency and life satisfaction of high school youth from Belize. Due to the contrast of geography, culture, and economic characteristics, between Belize and the U.S. many differences were hypothesized to be found. Resiliency and life satisfaction were hypothesized (a) to be lower in the youth from Belize when compared with previous studies of youth conducted in the United States, (b) youth in Belize, who have high resilience, will also have high life satisfaction and (c) youth who has low life satisfaction will also have very little resiliency.

A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis Of Tobacco Use And Prostate Cancer Mortality And Incidence In Prospective Cohort Studies, F. Islami, D. M. Moreira, P. Boffetta, S. J. Freedland

Journal Articles

Context: An association between tobacco smoking and prostate cancer (PCa) incidence and mortality was suggested in an earlier meta-analysis of 24 prospective studies in which dose-response associations and risks per unit of tobacco use were not examined. Objective: We investigated the association between several measures of tobacco use and PCa mortality (primary outcome) and incidence (secondary outcome) including dose-response association. Evidence acquisition: Relevant articles from prospective studies were identified by searching the PubMed and Web of Science databases (through January 21, 2014) and reference lists of relevant articles. Combined relative risks (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using …

PartiSEApate

For a sustainable and integrated planning of the sea space across the Baltic Sea region, planners and stakeholders have to be engaged in holistic, pan-Baltic thinking where the whole Baltic Sea is considered as one ecosystem and one planning space. However MSP related experiences so far shows that interests are often expressed from one sector or one national or regional perspective only. There is a lack of information exchange between the different maritime sectors as well MSP support structures (i.e. data providers and researchers) and spatial planners. And at the same time there is insufficient communication within the sectors at …

Perceptions Of Community, Personal Well-Being, And Outlook On The Future 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll Results, David Drozd Jan 2014

Perceptions Of Community, Personal Well-Being, And Outlook On The Future 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll Results, David Drozd

Past Publications

The 2014 Nebraska Metro Poll continues an on‐going effort to understand the perceptions and concerns of urban residents. The Metro Poll expands upon the efforts of the Omaha Conditions Survey conducted by the Center for Public Affairs Research (CPAR) periodically since 1990 to now include survey responses from the seven counties that comprise both the Omaha and Lincoln metro areas. With the knowledge and insights gained from surveying local residents, leaders and decision‐makers can be better informed on the views and priorities that the public shares.

Selected Characteristics For Nebraska Counties From The 2008-2012 American Community Survey, Center For Public Affairs Research (Cpar)

Past Publications

On December 17, 2013, the U.S. Census Bureau released five‐year American Community Survey (ACS) estimates for the combined years of 2008 through 2012, making available social, economic, housing and demographic statistics for Nebraska’s counties. Also available are estimates for every community and legislative district in Nebraska and the nation.

The data are based on a rolling national sample survey mailed to about 3 million addresses each year, resulting in nearly 2 million final interviews each year from 2008 through 2012. By pooling several years of survey responses, the ACS can generate detailed statistical portraits of smaller geographies such as counties. …

Using The Spatial Variability Of Lead In Urban Soils And Demographic Variables To Predict Exposure Risks: An Environmental Justice Analysis In Terre Haute, Indiana, Heather A. Foxx

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Terre Haute, Indiana, is similar to many older cities throughout the United States with a history of manufacturing and industry that relied on extensive road and rail networks. This industrial history has resulted in the presence of over 20 brownfields and even a Superfund Site within the city today. Historic neighborhoods and abundance of pre-1950's homes is another characteristic of the city. Unfortunately, improper removal and deterioration of lead (Pb) paints, as well as high Pb solder used in gutters, appear to be significant sources of soil Pb in Terre Haute. Despite the fact that most new environmental sources of …
