Land And Water Conservation In Tanzania: A Field Analysis, Lisette Borchert, Dr. Richard Jackson Jan 2014

Land And Water Conservation In Tanzania: A Field Analysis, Lisette Borchert, Dr. Richard Jackson

Journal of Undergraduate Research

There is an increasing concern over environmental change on Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro (Newmark 1992). For the Chagga, the indigenous people of this region, Mount Kilimanjaro is the source of all life. Primarily, they are dependent on the mountain for water, which is vital for their agricultural production and domestic needs. Historically, land has been passed down from father to son in these tiny African villages. However, as the population in the village increases, the sizes of each plot gets smaller and smaller until the plot becomes unusable. Likewise, as the Mount Kilimanjaro National Park and Forest Reserve (KNPFR) continues to …

Status Of 10 Additional Bird Species Of Conservation Concern In Us Fish & Wildlife Service Region 6, Christopher J. Butler, Jeffrey B. Tibbits, Katrina Hucks

United States Fish and Wildlife Service: Publications

American Bitterns are medium-sized, brown herons which inhabit large wetlands with dense emergent vegetation. Their cryptic coloration allows them to blend in well with dead emergent vegetation, and American Bitterns have a tendency to “freeze” with the bill pointing up if they feel threatened.

They breed from Newfoundland west to British Columbia (generally south of 55 °N latitude) and south to California, northern New Mexico, and northeastern North Carolina. American Bitterns generally winter in areas where the average temperature remains above freezing. Their winter distribution stretches from Maryland (rarely New Jersey) south to Florida, west to California, south through Mexico …

Optimization Of Wind Turbine Airfoils/Blades And Wind Farm Layouts, Xiaomin Chen Jan 2014

Optimization Of Wind Turbine Airfoils/Blades And Wind Farm Layouts, Xiaomin Chen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Shape optimization is widely used in the design of wind turbine blades. In this dissertation, a numerical optimization method called Genetic Algorithm (GA) is applied to address the shape optimization of wind turbine airfoils and blades. In recent years, the airfoil sections with blunt trailing edge (called flatback airfoils) have been proposed for the inboard regions of large wind-turbine blades because they provide several structural and aerodynamic performance advantages. The FX, DU and NACA 64 series airfoils are thick airfoils widely used for wind turbine blade application. They have several advantages in meeting the intrinsic requirements for wind turbines in …

Historical Romanian Meteorites: Emendations Of Official Catalogue Records, Dana Lüttge-Pop, Razvan A. Andrei, Nicolae Har Jan 2014

Historical Romanian Meteorites: Emendations Of Official Catalogue Records, Dana Lüttge-Pop, Razvan A. Andrei, Nicolae Har

Studia UBB Geologia

With its more than 50,000 valid official and provisory meteorite entries, the online catalogue of The Meteoritical Society, i.e., the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (MBDB) represents the most authorized and primary source of information in the field. Unfortunately, this official reference contains some erroneous geographical information in the case of five historical Romanian meteorites. For Zsadany, the current country information is “Hungary, Bekes county” instead of Romania, Timiş County. For Mezö-Madaras and Tauti, the county affiliations “Harghita” and respectively “Cluj” have to be corrected into Mureş and Arad, respectively. Geographical coordinates for Kakowa and Ohaba require minor corrections, only.

Lack Of 13c-Label Incorporation Suggests Low Turnover Rates Of Thaumarchaeal Intact Polar Tetraether Lipids In Sediments From The Iceland Shelf, Sk Lengger, Ya Lipsewers, H De Haas, Js Sinninghe Damsté, S Schouten

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Abstract. Thaumarchaeota are amongst the most abundant microorganisms in aquatic environments, however, their metabolism in marine sediments is still debated. Labeling studies in marine sediments have previously been undertaken, but focused on complex organic carbon substrates which Thaumarchaeota have not yet been shown to take up. In this study, we investigated the activity of Thaumarchaeota in sediments by supplying different 13C-labeled substrates which have previously been shown to be incorporated into archaeal cells in water incubations and/or enrichment cultures. We determined the incorporation of 13C-label from bicarbonate, pyruvate, glucose and amino acids into thaumarchaeal intact polar lipid-glycerol dibiphytanyl glycerol tetraethers …

Algebraic Detection Of Flexibility Of Polyhedral Structures With Applications To Robotics And Chemistry, Stephen Fox Fcrh '11, Robert Lewis Jan 2014

Algebraic Detection Of Flexibility Of Polyhedral Structures With Applications To Robotics And Chemistry, Stephen Fox Fcrh '11, Robert Lewis

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

Many problems arise in biochemistry, robotics, and other fields in which flexibility of a polygonal or polyhedral structure plays an important role. In biochemistry, the flexibility and folding of molecules is an important factor in drug design and is a subject of ongoing research (Erickson et al. 2004). In robotics, stable configurations of manipulators (e.g., a mechanical arm grasping) as well as mechanical joints for locomotion (e.g., walking) must be calculated for safe, smooth movement.

Tending The Flowers, Cultivating Community: Gardening On New York City Public Housing Sites, Lauren Sepanski Fcrh '12

The Fordham Undergraduate Research Journal

Founded in 1934, The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) is the nation’s oldest and largest public housing agency. Nearly half a million people live in NYCHA’s 334 housing developments located throughout the five boroughs. If a NYCHA resident wants to garden, he or she may submit a garden application to his or her development’s management office and begin to garden in a place approved by the development’s manager. Some developments have preordained places for their residents to garden, complete with fences. In other developments, residents simply choose a place on the development’s grounds, such as a part of a …

Turkish Accession To The European Union: Shaped By Perception Or Reality?, Hannah Q. Young Jan 2014

Turkish Accession To The European Union: Shaped By Perception Or Reality?, Hannah Q. Young

Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union

Throughout the last fifty years, Turkish-EU relations have fluctuated between positive to completely suspended, though one factor has remained consistent: the European Union’s hesitation to grant Turkey full membership. While some EU member countries justify barring Turkey from their ranks for a multitude of institutional, economic, and security reasons, similar issues have been overlooked in the past when accepting the membership bids of countries such as Spain, Greece, Romania, and Bulgaria. Why has Turkey in particular faced such sustained opposition from EU citizens? Is this opposition based on misinformed perceptions or an actual “clash” of cultures between the EU and …

Intraspecific Variation In Carapace Morphology Among Fiddler Crabs (Genus Uca) From The Atlantic Coast Of Brazil, Kelsey R. Hampton, Melanie J. Hopkins, John C. Mcnamara, Carl L. Thurman Jan 2014

Intraspecific Variation In Carapace Morphology Among Fiddler Crabs (Genus Uca) From The Atlantic Coast Of Brazil, Kelsey R. Hampton, Melanie J. Hopkins, John C. Mcnamara, Carl L. Thurman

Faculty Work

Isolation due to geographical barriers should promote genetic and morphological divergence among populations. Marine currents flowing in opposing directions along landmasses can constitute barriers that isolate populations dependent upon aquatic dispersal. The distribution of fiddler crabs (genus Uca) is regulated primarily by the oceanic transport of their planktonic larvae and by available adult habitat. Along the Brazilian coast of eastern South America, the flow of 2 major oceanic currents separates northern from southern Uca populations, which may promote intraspecific divergence in ‘trans-Brazilian’ species. Populations of 10 Uca species were sampled at 64 locations north and south of the Ponta …

Multi-Objective Approaches In Transit Stop Location Problem, Sha Mamun Jan 2014

Multi-Objective Approaches In Transit Stop Location Problem, Sha Mamun

Doctoral Dissertations

An efficient bus network design is a difficult problem, and hence is usually considered as a series of sub-problems solved sequentially. The bus stop location problem (BSLP) is foremost in this series of problems. The BSLP in this research is formulated as a mixed integer problem (MIP) that consideres three important design sub-problems: stop location, demand allocation and service frequency. Given a set of candidate bus stops, the level of trip connectivity and origindestination pair-wise trip demands, the problem is to answer the following related questions. How many bus stops should be required and where should they be located? Which …
