Compound City: Social, Economic, And Environmental Impact In The Production Of Generative Urban Space, Nathan Jones

Architecture Senior Theses

"Compound City" will focus on the implementation of an open source, social infrastructure, as a methodology in addressing the on-going urban crisis in Lagos. Dealing primarily with urban informality, Lagos will serve as a theoretical testbed, providing a natural precedent in which to test these ideas. How can open source technologies - softwares & hardwares - subvert or embrace existing infrastructures/processes as a means of alleviating inadequate living conditions? Identifying the coincidental pressures in Lagos will help establish project parameters, driving the development of design criteria to be addressed by the new, open source, platform.

Epistemology: It’S Elementary! An Architectonically Constructivist Elementary School In Syracuse, Ny-- Part 1, Tyler Ferrusi

Architecture Senior Theses

The Constructivist framework is an epistemology which posits that “knowledge is a compilation of humanmade constructions”1 not the “neutral discovery of an objective truth.”2 As a fairly broad concept that theorizes how knowledge is acquired, constructivism illustrates our conception of what knowledge is. This the classical framework of infallible truth. Hence, the individual learner is responsible for actively building Constructivism, as theorized by educational philosophers like Dewey, Piaget, Lewin, and Kolb, is the its application is certainly not limited to designated learning environments. Thus, any environment can be a learning environment takes place within that environment. The multiplicity of environments …

Single But Not Alone: The Journey From Stigma To Collective Identity Through Himachal’S Single Women’S Movement, Kim Berry Apr 2014

Single But Not Alone: The Journey From Stigma To Collective Identity Through Himachal’S Single Women’S Movement, Kim Berry

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Across the northwestern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh, never-married, divorced, separated, abandoned and widowed women have joined together across differences of caste, class, ethnicity and region to organize as members of Ekal Nari Shakti Sangathan (the Association of Empowered Single Women). Until recently the term single woman (ekal nari) was rarely, if ever, used locally to describe a particular woman’s circumstances of living outside the institution of marriage. Yet since the emergence of Ekal Nari Shakti Sangathan (ENSS) in Himachal Pradesh in 2005, over 9,000 women have become dues-paying members of the organization, re-identifying as single women, and struggling collectively …

An American Enterprise? British Participation In Us Food Relief Programmes (1914-1923), Tammy M. Proctor

History Faculty Publications

This article examines a particularly fraught zone where the British and American conceptions of food aid and moral guidance conflicted – the former enemy nations of Austria and Germany. These countries were considered special cases for food relief, not only because the British and American public had little interest in feeding their former foes, but also because each was seen by aid officials as societies that might succumb to social revolution if food security was not established. While the Americans had established a massive child-feeding operation in Europe under the auspices of the American Relief Administration's European Children's Fund and …

She Shoots, And She Scores: Women And Sports In Samoa, Taylor Thorp Apr 2014

She Shoots, And She Scores: Women And Sports In Samoa, Taylor Thorp

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In Samoa, female athletics are shaped by a variety of factors such as gender issues, health, and the interaction of sports with education and family obligations. This paper explores the experiences of Samoan female athletes in order to identify strengths and weaknesses of sports in Samoa. Surveys, interviews, and observations were used to collect data about women in sports. Cultural constructs such as fa’samoa and education expectations help and hinder athletic experiences of Samoan women. Gender inequality also proves to be an issue, preventing women from participating in sports. Despite shortcomings of athletics in Samoa, women enjoy playing sports because …

Basel Banking Norms: A Primer, Akshay Uday Shenoy, Yatin Balkrishna Mohane, Charan Singh Apr 2014

Basel Banking Norms: A Primer, Akshay Uday Shenoy, Yatin Balkrishna Mohane, Charan Singh

Working Papers

This paper aims to first build a deeper understanding of the emergence of Basel banking norms (Basel I), and the transition to each of the subsequent regulations (Basel II and Basel III). The primary purpose of developing this understanding is to further analyze the extent of effectiveness of the Basel norms. To explore how such regulations impact an economy, we have specifically looked at five economies of the world (including India), which are geographically apart, in this context. The idea here is to study how, for instance, banking institutions have shaped up to these norms - and whether the effects …

The paper also discusses global efforts against the phenomenon and policy recommendations. Â

Understanding Angel Investing In India: An Exploratory Study Based On Publicly Available Data, G Sabarinathan Apr 2014

Understanding Angel Investing In India: An Exploratory Study Based On Publicly Available Data, G Sabarinathan

Working Papers

Informal equity investing, of which angel investing is an important, if not perhaps the most important, constituent, has been around for a very long time in India. It has been gaining momentum in the past decade thanks to a number of factors, including that of the emergence of angel networks. However, the field of informal equity investing is relatively under-researched in India except for Rajan (2012). This paper attempts to improve the current understanding of the field in three ways. First, it endeavours to map out the investment activity that has been undertaken by a variety of angels, including some …

Cost-Savings Achieved In Two Semesters Through The Adoption Of Open Educational Resources, John Levi Hilton Iii, T. Jared Robinson, David Wiley, J. Dale Ackerman

Entrepreneurship Faculty Research

Textbooks represent a significant portion of the overall cost of higher education in the United States. The burden of these costs is typically shouldered by students, those who support them, and the taxpayers who fund the grants and student loans which pay for textbooks. Open educational resources (OER) provide students a way to receive high quality learning materials at little or no cost to students. We report on the cost savings achieved by students at eight colleges when these colleges began utilizing OER in place of traditional commercial textbooks.

A Critique Of Chinese Education, Ying Chen Apr 2014

A Critique Of Chinese Education, Ying Chen

Architecture Senior Theses

The biggest problem of the state-controlled children’s education in the People’s Republic of China is that the system focuses more on the method of education rather than learning of children themselves. Thus the children lack of internal motivation to learn. Moreover, the typical education in China tend to isolate the students from the neighborhood, lacking a chance for students to really interact and experiement hands on with new knwoledge. However, this problem aspect can be overcame by learning from the western pedagogical strategies, such as the Montessori Education. For this educational approach, the primary goal is to stimulate children’s internal …

Community Recentered, Elizabeth Arens Apr 2014

Community Recentered, Elizabeth Arens

Architecture Senior Theses

Chicago, Illinois is a large city comprised of small neighborhoods. The City of Chicago is made up of 77 “Community Areas.” Many diverse neighborhoods are within each community area. Each neighborhood has its own identity that revolves around the churches, schools and community centers that serve the neighborhood. In each of these educational institutions, learning also exists on a larger social and cultural scale that is reflective of the distinct qualities of the neighborhood. The idea of a learning institution as the center of a neighborhood is formed at the time children first begin school. Much of their intellectual and …

The Edward Bliss Emerson Journal Project: Qualitative Research By A Non-Hierarchical Team, José G. Rigau-Pérez, Silvia E. Rabionet, Annette B. Ramírez De Arellano, Wilfredo A. Géigel, Alma Simounet, Raúl Mayo-Santana

The Qualitative Report Books

Edward Bliss Emerson (1805-1834), a younger brother of the renowned essayist and poet Ralph Waldo Emerson, lived in the Caribbean for the final three years of his life. His journal and letters are a rich manuscript source for the history of the Danish Virgin Islands (1831-1832) and Puerto Rico (1831-1834). The texts also reflect the contemporary political and cultural situation in the United States, and Edward's search for health, economic independence, intellectual stimulation and metaphysical fulfillment.

These writings ignited an intellectual passion in José G. Rigau-Pérez, a physician, medical epidemiologist, and historian in Puerto Rico. Furthering access to these unique …
