A Multi-Case Study Of Student Interactions With Educational Robots And Impact On Science, Technology, Engineering, And Math (Stem) Learning And Attitudes, Stephanie Holmquist

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The demand for STEM trained workers continues to increase not only in the United States, but globally. Reports have indicated that the United States is not doing a good job encouraging students to pursue STEM oriented degrees. In particular, it has become increasingly important to emphasize STEM connections at an early level in order to encourage student career exploration as they continue their education. Educational robots represent a unique alternative to traditional methods, especially at the elementary level. Considering the use of educational robots have largely been ignored at this level, the purpose of this study was to describe the …

Bringing Nature To Humans: How To Evaluate The Next Generation Of Urban Parks And Green Spaces, Jeffrey W. Ackley Apr 2014

Bringing Nature To Humans: How To Evaluate The Next Generation Of Urban Parks And Green Spaces, Jeffrey W. Ackley

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

With the rise of designer habitats and citizen scientists, ecologists and the general public will play a broader role in evaluating and managing urban parks and green spaces in America. This revised decision making process would benefit from the inclusion of concepts from environmental ethics like ecological citizenship, as well as a re-evaluation of traditional conservation priorities. A reduced emphasis on large protected areas, native biodiversity, static park designs, and hard boundaries between nature and the city would allow for a new generation of ethical urban environments, which can provide a wider array of current benefits while remaining adaptable to …

It is now widely understood that all animals engage in complex interactions with bacteria (or microbes) throughout their various life stages. This ancient exchange can involve cooperation and has resulted in a wide range of evolved host-microbial interdependencies, including those observed in the gut. Ciona intestinalis, a filter-feeding basal chordate and classic developmental model that can be experimentally manipulated, is being employed to help define these relationships. Ciona larvae are first exposed internally to microbes upon the initiation of feeding in metamorphosed individuals; however, whether or not these microbes subsequently colonize the gut and whether or not Ciona forms …

As part of EEOS 406 course work, students located and mapped distributions of an invasive plant, Spotted knapweed, on Nantucket for the Nantucket Conservation Foundation. Once established, the plant continues to spread to surrounding habitat and outcompetes native species. Prior to their field work, Dr. Sarah Oktay (NFS) and Kelly Omand (NCF) briefed the students on the history of the species on Nantucket. Kelly assigned the location for data collection to further support ongoing NCF research of the species.

American Indian Oral Traditions And Their Relation To The Paleo-Seti Community, Rachel K. See Apr 2014

American Indian Oral Traditions And Their Relation To The Paleo-Seti Community, Rachel K. See

JCCC Honors Journal

Paleo-SETI is a social discourse which has seen rapidly increasing popularity since its conception in the late 1800’s. Its main focus is identifying evidence of intelligent extraterrestrial occupation of Earth in its distant past. The Paleo-SETI community commonly draws upon ancient oral and religious traditions, reinterpreting them as containing evidence of alien visitors. Commonalities such as ‘the flood’ and ‘cyclical time’ are also identified. Paleo-SETI thought also incorporates evidence of Supra human knowledge, anomalous archeological sites and seemingly unexplainabe advanced technology. This paper examined six American Indian Oral traditions and their relation to the evolving discourses in the Paleo-SETI community. …

A Study On Rebuilding The Classification System Of The Ocean Economy, Dr. Kwang Seo Park Apr 2014

A Study On Rebuilding The Classification System Of The Ocean Economy, Dr. Kwang Seo Park

Working Papers

Many ocean countries have estimated and released the size of the ocean economy or industry. However it is difficult to compare the ocean economy among countries because the definition, classification standard and scope differ by each country. This study aims to provide concrete practical proposals for the definition, classification standard and scope of the ocean economy. With regard to the definition of the ocean economy, a combination of industrial and geographical perspectives is considered at the same time. As a result, the ocean economy is defined as the economic activities that directly or indirectly take place in the ocean, use …

The Estimation Of The Ocean Economy And Coastal Economy In South Korea, Dr. Kwang Seo Park Apr 2014

The Estimation Of The Ocean Economy And Coastal Economy In South Korea, Dr. Kwang Seo Park

Working Papers

Over the past 60 years, the South Korean economy has gotten outstanding achievements that would be hard to find around the world. South Korea’s real GDP, which was converted to US dollars using 2011 PPPs, in 2010 was 1,506 billion from 3.8 billion in 1960, and real GDP per capita in 2010 was 29,411 from 1,537 in 1960. The successful paradigm of the South Korean economy has clearly benefitted from export-led development and ready access to common sea lanes.

South Korea is surrounded by the ocean on three sides. It has abundant ocean resources, with its 433,000㎢ of territorial water …

“It Is Silly To Hide Your Most Active Patrons”: Exploring User Participation Of Library Space Designs For Young Adults In The United States, Anthony Bernier, Mike Males, Collin Rickman Apr 2014

“It Is Silly To Hide Your Most Active Patrons”: Exploring User Participation Of Library Space Designs For Young Adults In The United States, Anthony Bernier, Mike Males, Collin Rickman

Faculty Publications

This article advances the first attempt to collect and examine empirical data on young adult (YA) spaces in public libraries from institutions across the United States by surveying current practices in new and renovated buildings. Analysis of an online survey of 257 library and information science (LIS) professionals produced an innovative Youth Participation Index (YPI) used to document the relative intensities of youth involvement in the design and execution of YA spaces. Libraries claiming higher levels of youth participation reported significant quality service improvements across a wide range of outcomes. However, after several decades of advocating for youth involvement in …

Climate Engineering Field Research: The Favorable Setting Of International Environmental Law, Jesse Reynolds Apr 2014

Climate Engineering Field Research: The Favorable Setting Of International Environmental Law, Jesse Reynolds

Washington and Lee Journal of Energy, Climate, and the Environment

As forecasts for climate change and its impacts have become more dire, climate engineering proposals have come under increasing consideration and are presently moving toward field trials. This article examines the relevant international environmental law, distinguishing between climate engineering research and deployment. It also emphasizes the climate change context of these proposals and the enabling function of law. Extant international environmental law generally favors such field tests, in large part because, even though field trials may present uncertain risks to humans and the environment, climate engineering may reduce the greater risks of climate change. Notably, this favorable legal setting is …

The Nfl’S Highly And Lowly Identified Fans: Who Are They?, Daniel Cusato Apr 2014

The Nfl’S Highly And Lowly Identified Fans: Who Are They?, Daniel Cusato

Sport Management Undergraduate

While there is a plethora of literature on fan identification, specifically high or lowly identified fans, there is no literature on who these highly and lowly identified fans actually are. The goal of this research paper is to fill the void in that section of NFL fan literature and discover what demographics of fans are the most highly and lowly identified. In order to find out who is a highly or lowly identified fan, a survey must be administered that will effectively test the characteristics of each participant. This will make the respondents classifiable as either a highly or lowly …

Experiments In Love: Longus’ Daphnis & Chloe And Henry De Vere Stacpoole’S The Blue Lagoon, Kirsten Day Apr 2014

Experiments In Love: Longus’ Daphnis & Chloe And Henry De Vere Stacpoole’S The Blue Lagoon, Kirsten Day

Classics: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works

Despite a chronological gulf of nearly two thousand years, the second century C.E. Greek romance writer Longus and the early twentieth century Irish novelist Henry de Vere Stacpoole were prompted to produce their best works by a similar motive: an urge to explore the world, and particularly the phenomenon of love and desire, from a standpoint of complete innocence. Although the resulting novels, Daphnis & Chloe andThe Blue Lagoon respectively, have no evident direct connection, they exhibit surprising similarities not only in plot, setting, and characterization, but also in the values, perspectives, and worldviews they advance. The striking intersections …

Identification Of Slums In Mumbai, India: Unsupervised Classification Techniques, Frankie St. Amand Apr 2014

Identification Of Slums In Mumbai, India: Unsupervised Classification Techniques, Frankie St. Amand

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Slums are contiguous settlements. Inhabitants lack access to safe water, sanitation and sewage infrastructure, secure housing tenure, uncrowded living space, and permanent, durable housing. Addressing these problematic trends begins with identifying contiguous settlements within Mumbai’s urban fabric. Classifications can be performed using satellite images and remote sensing techniques to yield accurate results. Through literature reviews, socio-cultural analysis, and examination of high resolution satellite imagery, this project aims to develop a systematic, accessible, and reproducible method of classifying Mumbai’s slums.

Effects Of Digital Elevation Model Resolution On Estimates Of Flood Damage In Westbrook, Maine, Scott Webber Apr 2014

Effects Of Digital Elevation Model Resolution On Estimates Of Flood Damage In Westbrook, Maine, Scott Webber

Thinking Matters Symposium Archive

Accurate predictions of flood damage and economic losses are increasingly important as historically low-probability floods have become more common. Digital elevation models (DEMs) are essential to flood modeling as they define stream channel and floodplain morphology, the accuracy of which influence estimates of flood damage. The city of Westbrook, Maine experiences episodic flooding of the Presumpscot River; therefore, flooding in Westbrook was simulated with HAZUS, a model created by the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The model is designed to assess the costs associated with hazard scenarios including riverine flooding. HAZUS was run for a 100-year return period flood with both …
