An Alternative American Approach To Repositories [Open Repositories 2014 Proposal], Paul Royster Apr 2014

An Alternative American Approach To Repositories [Open Repositories 2014 Proposal], Paul Royster

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

The repository community has many organizations, experts, consultants, and “thought leaders” prepared to give direction and advice to the developers and managers of institutional repositories. This presentation is about how one repository (ours) has found success by rejecting much of their “conventional” wisdom and “expert” advice. We have declined to support the SPARC Addendum, promote campus mandates, encourage Creative Commons licensing, use open-source software, rely on faculty self-archiving, or require peer-review for original publishing; and we are not even considered truly “open” access by SPARC or the hard-line “libre” adherents.

Yet we are the second-largest U.S. institutional repository, with more …

Journal of Undergraduate Research

I would like to begin by thanking the Office of Research & Creative Activities for the incredible opportunity I had to pursue in-‐depth research on a topic that I found exciting and pertinent to my studies at BYU. This grant gave me the opportunity to work closely with a faculty mentor, and to expand my academic experience during my last year as an undergraduate. Thanks to the funding, I was able to complete my honors thesis, which now is available for the public to view in the Harold B. Lee Library (call number XX(5369221.1).

From Symbolic To Social Boundaries: The Utah Minuteman Project, Keaton Robertson, Dr. Charlie Morgan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Social movements, such as the Utah Minuteman Project (UMP) play an important role in shaping public opinion on critical immigration issues. Utah, regarded as a sanctuary state by antiillegal immigrant movements, is one of ten states that grant in-state tuition to anyone who graduates from a Utah high school without proof of residency. Furthermore, it was the first state to offer driving privilege cards to “Individuals who are unable to establish legal/lawful presence and who are ineligible for a US Social Security Number,” including undocumented immigrants. After the emergence of the Minutemen, numerous so-called “anti-immigrant” legislation has been proposed at …

Three African Futures, John Page Apr 2014

Three African Futures, John Page

Brookings Scholar Lecture Series

Africa has experienced a remarkable turn-around in economic performance since 1995. It grew at around 4.6 percent per year during the first decade of the 21st century, and the region boasts three of the world’s ten fastest-growing countries. Cheerleaders as diverse as the Economist and the World Bank have branded Africa the developing world’s next “frontier market”. But beneath the headlines lie some disturbing realities. Africa is not creating enough good jobs – those capable of paying decent wages and providing opportunities to develop skills – and it is not reducing poverty at the same rate as other parts of …

The Imperial Temple At Antiochia Ad Cragum: Aspects Of Architecture And Iconography, Geraldine S. Dobos

School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work

Along the northeastern Mediterranean shore lies Antiochia ad Cragum, an ancient city located in the western area of the Roman province of Rough Cilicia. It is now known as the village of Guney, in southern Turkey. The Northeast Temple is the first Imperial structure at Antiochia that has been revealed in its entirety and its reconstruction is anticipated. This excavation by the University of Nebraska (Antiochia ad Cragum Archaeological Research Project, or ACARP), is directed by UNL Professor Michael Hoff.

The hypothetical reconstruction of the Northeast Temple’s geison course, which I present, emphasizes certain diagnostic features that may be used …

An Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Clinic Selection And The Association With Subsequent Process/Outcome Measures Among Medicaid Beneficiaries, Lynn Vanderwielen Apr 2014

An Evaluation Of Prenatal Care Clinic Selection And The Association With Subsequent Process/Outcome Measures Among Medicaid Beneficiaries, Lynn Vanderwielen

Theses and Dissertations

In 2010 Medicaid financed approximately 48% of all births in the United States and nearly 30% of all births in Virginia. Due to strict state-specific eligibility criteria, many low-income women qualify for Medicaid coverage exclusively as a result of pregnancy status. As the nation moves forward with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA), state-elected Medicaid expansion has the potential to expand services to women of reproductive age that would precede pregnancy events and offer continuous access to care postpartum. Despite this potential influx of newly insured women, little is known about how this population may make decisions regarding …

Modeling Home Market Value Using Remote Sensing Vegetation Indices, Carson Stam, Dr. Ryan Jensen Apr 2014

Modeling Home Market Value Using Remote Sensing Vegetation Indices, Carson Stam, Dr. Ryan Jensen

Journal of Undergraduate Research

As the principal habitat of the human race, urban areas require a high degree of attention and research. The United Nations has estimated that slightly over 50% of the world’s population now lives in urban areas. This number is projected to increase steadily in the coming decades. The ability to understand our habitat as a species is key to understanding our future. An important component of any urban area is the urban forest. McPherson and Luttinger (1996) stated that “[r]esearch is revealing that with proper management and care, urban forests can contribute to the economic vitality and the quality of …

Teachers’ Perceptions Of Scripted Education, Alexa M. Lowery

Honors College Theses

The purpose of my study was to investigate teachers’ perceptions of scripted techniques using state mandated standards and the techniques’ impact on student performance. I surveyed the teachers of elementary schools in Edwards County (pseudonym) and found that most teachers are not using the standards as they were originally intended, and they feel that students are falling behind because the standards are not developmentally appropriate.

Tail Spine Characteristics Of The Yellow Stingray, Urobatis Jamaicensis (Order: Myliobatiformes), Of Broward County, Florida, Ana Rehman

Undergraduate Student Symposium

The barbed spine of the yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis, has a unique architecture and histology. The spines are stiletto-shaped and flattened with lateral serrations that point backwards. Venom-secreting glandular cells incased in by integument run along two longitudinal grooves for the length of the spine. Urobatis has one or more barbs (modified dermal denticles) located on the dorsal side of the ray's tail, which often is used for defense. Previous research has reported the existence of tail spine asymmetry by geography, sex and age in 12 species of stingrays (Schwartz, 2007), This study examined tail spine length and number …

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

Fossil fuel combustion has increased atmospheric CO2 by ≈ 115 µmol mol−1 since 1750 and decreased its carbon isotope composition (δ13C) by 1.7–2‰ (the 13C Suess effect). Because carbon is stored in the terrestrial biosphere for decades and longer, the δ13C of CO2released by terrestrial ecosystems is expected to differ from the δ13C of CO2 assimilated by land plants during photosynthesis. This isotopic difference between land-atmosphere respiration (δR) and photosynthetic assimilation (δA) fluxes gives rise to the 13C land disequilibrium …

Atmospheric And Ocean Conditions And Social Aspects Associated With Rip Current Drownings In The United States, Charles Hugh Paxton Apr 2014

Atmospheric And Ocean Conditions And Social Aspects Associated With Rip Current Drownings In The United States, Charles Hugh Paxton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to provide a better understanding of the physical and social aspects of rip currents in ocean areas that will lead to better forecasts, better governmental policies in beach areas, and ultimately to save lives. A rip current is a nearshore circulation in which breaking waves run up onto the beach then retreat rapidly in deeper channels back toward the sea. Rip currents pose a significant threat to beachgoers and can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. The primary factors associated with rip current formation on unarmored beaches are variations in the local …

Household Water Demand And Land Use Context: A Multilevel Approach, Elizabeth Yancey Breyer Apr 2014

Household Water Demand And Land Use Context: A Multilevel Approach, Elizabeth Yancey Breyer

Dissertations and Theses

Urban water use arises from a mix of scale-dependent biophysical and socioeconomic factors. In Portland, Oregon, single-family residential water use exhibits a tightly coupled relationship with summertime weather, although this relationship varies with land use patterns across households and neighborhoods. This thesis developed a multilevel regression model to evaluate the relative importance of weather variability, parcel land use characteristics, and neighborhood geographic context in explaining single-family residential water demand patterns in the Portland metropolitan area. The model drew on a high-resolution panel dataset of weekly mean summer water use over five years (2001-2005) for a sample of 460 single-family households …

Phenomenology Redux: Doing Phenomenology, Becoming Phenomenological, Thomas A. Conklin Apr 2014

Phenomenology Redux: Doing Phenomenology, Becoming Phenomenological, Thomas A. Conklin

Organization Management Journal

This article revisits the phenomenological method with particular focus on how it is meaningful for me. The effort is to present this method as a personal journey that has evolved over 13 years and to illustrate how it might become a more accessible approach for meaning-making and serving others. This is partly accomplished by dethroning it from its lofty philosophical perch such that it is available for daily use by practitioners, educators, and researchers. Further accessibility is provided through the presentation of various examples in health care, higher education, and personal reflections on the experience of understanding and employing phenomenology. …

'Writing My First Academic Article Feels Like Dancing Around Naked': Research Development For Higher Education Lecturers Working In Further Education Colleges, Rebecca Turner, Tony Brown, Andrew Edwards-Jones Apr 2014

'Writing My First Academic Article Feels Like Dancing Around Naked': Research Development For Higher Education Lecturers Working In Further Education Colleges, Rebecca Turner, Tony Brown, Andrew Edwards-Jones

Plymouth Institute of Education

Growing emphasis on research output has spawned initiatives to enhance writing practices, often targeted at groups less familiar with academic research practices. This paper discusses a collaborative writing group project for higher education lecturers working in further education colleges. Participants had previously undertaken funded pedagogic research projects. The authors analyse participants' writing during the initiative and data to review the design, operation and impact of the writing group. They discuss challenging preconceptions and normalising the practice of writing, consider how academic developers can support lecturers' writing practices and identify recommendations to promote the longer term impact of such work.
