Synoptic And Lake-Effect Classification Of Snowfall In The Lake Michigan Region, Eleanor Delap, Sarah Fingerle, Kaitlyn Heinlein, Allison Young, Craig Clark

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research is part of a broader project that explores the role of Lake Michigan in its regional climatology. Since 1950, the wintertime temperatures have risen, but snowfall amounts have stayed constant. This study explores snowfall events in October and November to see the role that early lake-effect snow has on the constant yearly snowfall average, as well as to see which areas around the lake are most impacted by lake-effect snow. In order to understand the role of lake-effect snow in the regional climatology, this study used the daily weather map archive to focus on the overall synoptic-scale pattern …

Interannual And Seasonal Variability Of Tropical Cyclone Genesis In The Northwest Australia Basin, Eleanor Delap, Nathan Kelly, Mallory Row, Zachary Sefcovic, Kevin Goebbert May 2014

Interannual And Seasonal Variability Of Tropical Cyclone Genesis In The Northwest Australia Basin, Eleanor Delap, Nathan Kelly, Mallory Row, Zachary Sefcovic, Kevin Goebbert

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Common genesis regions for Tropical Cyclones (TCs) worldwide have been identified, but TC genesis in the Northwest Australian Basin (NWAUS) has not been thoroughly studied. Studies conducted in other TC basins show distinct trends in spatial and temporal patterns of TC genesis, but these trends are largely unknown in the NWAUS. The analysis begins by describing the spatial and temporal distribution of TC genesis points for the region. Then statistical correlations are calculated to connect specific genesis regions, in both space and time, to atmospheric teleconnection patterns such as the IOD, ENSO and NAO. In addition, statistical correlations between TC …

Analysis Of Monthly, Seasonal, And Yearly Wind Flow Over The Ometepe Island In Lake Nicaragua, Allison Young, Ricky Cody, Adam Brainard

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

The health issues on the Ometepe Island in Lake Nicaragua are directly influenced by the open-pit fires inside of homes on the island and the particulates they produce. Understanding the prevailing wind patterns of the area would result in better advice for local homeowners on how to foster natural air flow through their homes and minimize the concentrations of trapped particulates. The purpose of this study is to identify prevailing wind patterns over the island in the monthly, seasonal, and yearly time frames. Due to the limited observations in the island area, the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) was …

The Spread Of Country Music To An Urban Setting Seen Through The Spread Of Dance Halls, Karl Walsh May 2014

The Spread Of Country Music To An Urban Setting Seen Through The Spread Of Dance Halls, Karl Walsh

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Country music has become one of the most popular genres of music in today's world. A genre that grew out of the rural societies of America, its popularity has spread into the urban setting and has influenced social life there as well. This poses a question about whether country music has a become more popular in an urban/suburban setting versus a rural setting. There has been a large increase in country music's popularity in an urban setting and it is where the genre is becoming more popular. The spread of country music will be represented by country music dance halls …

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

This research is part of a broader project that explores the role of Lake Michigan in the regional snowfall climatology. This study explores the statistics of snowfall through the month of November in the Lake Michigan region. Each November snowfall event was classified by whether it was a synoptic event or a lake-effect snow event. From these classifications, a table of dates and snowfall statistics were compiled for Lake Michigan snowfall events from 1950 to 2012. This table was used in coordination with NCDC netCDF re-analysis files to find relationships between the type of the event and 850-hPa, 500-hPa, and …

Up-Scaled Fish Barrier: Vertically Mounted Electrodes Are Economical, Maintainable, Safe, Brandon Benninger

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

Our Great Lakes are under attack by the invasive Asian carp. If they were to establish themselves in the lakes, it would prove detrimental to the ecosystem, the multi-billion dollar fishing industry, and recreational lake use. They become harmful airborne projectiles when disturbed by watercraft and will starve out native species. My focus is on the $200 million barrier system put in place to stop the migration of these fish. Currently, these fish are being stopped by a massive horizontal electrode fish barrier system located in Romeoville, Illinois. My research was spurred by the amount of problems with the maintenance …

Mode, Method, And Medium: The Affordance Of Online Tutorials In The Writing Center, Erik V. Holtz May 2014

Mode, Method, And Medium: The Affordance Of Online Tutorials In The Writing Center, Erik V. Holtz

Honors Scholar Theses

While the body of literature regarding online tutorials in the writing center is growing, researchers seem hesitant to fully endorse, or even commend, online writing tutorials. This seems appropriate for work in communication theory and human-computer interaction; working across a medium may be different, but this could create new and interesting ways of tutoring. This research reports on a comparative analysis of online and in-person tutoring at three different universities, focusing on tutor self-perceptions and on affordances, a concept drawn from systems engineering, human-computer interaction and ecological psychology. Unstructured interviewing is used to create a set of preliminary affordances of …

Policy outcomes will also be discussed for the situation of each nation, each with its own set of contextual sensitivities in the face of climatic shifts. Generalized policy options will be proposed for the common …

Dodge, Duck, Elude, And Eschew: Fluctuations In American Public Opinion Regarding Intervention In Darfur, Libya, And Syria, Ashley E. V. Palma May 2014

Dodge, Duck, Elude, And Eschew: Fluctuations In American Public Opinion Regarding Intervention In Darfur, Libya, And Syria, Ashley E. V. Palma

Honors Scholar Theses

Since the beginning of the 21st century, the world has suffered through several humanitarian crises. Few have captured the attention and imagination of Americans quite like the crises in Darfur, Libya, and Syria have. As each situation has developed – and the violence in each place has come to light – Americans have spent long hours debating the merits of intervention in each place. Americans seemed to support an intervention in Darfur, had mixed feelings about an intervention in Libya, and opposed intervention in Syria. This thesis asks why the American public has had different reactions to each crisis. …

An Analysis Of Municipality-Level Election Results Of The 2012 Presidential Election In New York, Pennsylvania, And Ohio, And Comparison Of These Results To Those From The 2008 Presidential Election, Gregory Naigles May 2014

An Analysis Of Municipality-Level Election Results Of The 2012 Presidential Election In New York, Pennsylvania, And Ohio, And Comparison Of These Results To Those From The 2008 Presidential Election, Gregory Naigles

CLAS: Colby Liberal Arts Symposium

The 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections were both similar and different in many ways. On one hand, the Democratic candidate was the same in both elections, and similar strategies were employed by both sides in the two elections. On the other hand, the candidates formed slightly different coalitions, turnout rates were different, and there were some differences in which states the campaigns chose to focus on. I have analyzed the results of these two elections, particularly the 2012 presidential election, in the three states of New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, in order to try to determine where the election results …

Impact Of Ethnic Identity On Adaptation To Surgery For Breast Cancer In Hispanic And Non-Hispanic White Women, Devika R. Jutagir

Open Access Theses

Women vary widely in their ability to adapt psychologically and physiologically to the stressors of diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer, and such adaptation may depend on a number of cognitive and cultural individual difference factors. Research has found that women differ in the degree to which they identify with their ethnic group and in the type of strategies they use for coping. These differences have been associated with differences in various aspects of quality of life, psychosocial and physiological adaptation in particular, in women with early stage breast cancer. However, research has yet to clarify the roles of ethnicity, …

Volunteers' Cross-Cultural Experience In Tanzania And Zambia, Josephine Elaine Talarski

Theses & Dissertations

Despite a growing interest in international volunteerism, there is a scarcity of literature concerning returning volunteers’ cross-cultural experience in developing countries. The purpose of the study was to examine the phenomenon of volunteers’ cross-cultural experience of participating in immersion trips to Tanzania and Zambia. The study also explored whether volunteers believed their cross-cultural experience to be life changing. The following research questions were used to guide this study: 1. What motivated volunteers to participate in immersion trips to Tanzania and Zambia? 2. How has the immersion experience changed the volunteers’ beliefs about themselves while engaging in a cross-cultural environment? 3. …

Networks Of Military Alliances, Wars, And International Trade, Matthew O. Jackson, Stephen Nei Stephen Nei May 2014

Networks Of Military Alliances, Wars, And International Trade, Matthew O. Jackson, Stephen Nei Stephen Nei

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We investigate the role of networks of military alliances in preventing or encouraging wars between groups of countries. A country is vulnerable to attack if some allied group of countries can defeat the defending country and its (remaining) allies based on their collective military strengths. We show that there do not exist any networks which contain no vulnerable countries and that are stable against the pairwise addition of a new alliance as well as against the unilateral deletion of any existing alliance. We then show that economic benefits from international trade provide incentives to form alliances in ways that restore …

Interannual Variations And Trends In Global Land Surface Phenology Derived From Enhanced Vegetation Index During 1982–2010, Xiaoyang Zhang, Bin Tan, Yunyue Yu

GSCE Faculty Publications

Land surface phenology is widely retrieved from satellite observations at regional and global scales, and its long-term record has been demonstrated to be a valuable tool for reconstructing past climate variations, monitoring the dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems in response to climate impacts, and predicting biological responses to future climate scenarios. This study detected global land surface phenology from the advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data from 1982 to 2010. Based on daily enhanced vegetation index at a spatial resolution of 0.05 degrees, we simulated the seasonal vegetative trajectory for each individual pixel …

No One Cried For Help: The Integration Of Groupthink Into Modern Rape Culture, Jourdin Hermann May 2014

No One Cried For Help: The Integration Of Groupthink Into Modern Rape Culture, Jourdin Hermann

Themis: Research Journal of Justice Studies and Forensic Science

Rape symbolizes lost innocence. Many young females increasingly endure sexual violence at the hands of multiple male assailants. Despite the common coupling of group dynamics and rapes, little evidence proposes Irving Janis’s theory of groupthink as one plausible explanation. This paper argues that the two concepts are related; groupthink needs to hold a more prominent position within the sexual violence literature. A case in the small town of Steubenville, Ohio provides the backdrop for investigating how groupthink impacts instances of gang rapes. Integration of the scholarly literature available on groupthink and sexual violence establishes the basis of this research. Janis’s …

Validation Of Satellite Rainfall Products For Western Uganda., Jeremy E. Diem, Joel N. Hartter, Sadie J. Ryan, Michael W. Palace

Geography

Central equatorial Africa is deficient in long-term, ground-based measurements of rainfall; therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the accuracy of three high-resolution, satellite-based rainfall products in western Uganda for the 2001–10 period. The three products are African Rainfall Climatology, version 2 (ARC2); African Rainfall Estimation Algorithm, version 2 (RFE2); and 3B42 from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, version 7 (i.e., 3B42v7). Daily rainfall totals from six gauges were used to assess the accuracy of satellite-based rainfall estimates of rainfall days, daily rainfall totals, 10-day rainfall totals, monthly rainfall totals, and seasonal rainfall totals. The northern stations had …
