Asher Creek Water Quality Assessment, Greene And Polk Counties, Missouri: Final Report, Marc R. Owen, Robert T. Pavlowsky
Asher Creek Water Quality Assessment, Greene And Polk Counties, Missouri: Final Report, Marc R. Owen, Robert T. Pavlowsky
OEWRI Technical Reports
The Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District has implemented a Section 319 Grant from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and the Environmental Protection Agency Region VII designed to reduce nonpoint source pollution in the Asher Creek Watershed in northern Greene and southern Polk Counties. In 1998, the Little Sac River was placed on the 303d list for bacterial contamination, for which a TMDL for Total Coliform was approved in 2006 (Baffaut 2006). Various studies have indicated Asher Creek has the highest level of E. Coli bacteria in the entire Little Sac River Watershed and the Upper Little Sac …

Adoption Of Diffused Renewable Energy Technologies: Patterns And Drivers Of Residential Photovoltaic (Pv) Systems In Connecticut, 2005-2013, Marcello Graziano
Doctoral Dissertations
Growing concern about global climate change and energy security are prompting reconsideration of how energy—particularly electricity—is generated, transmitted, and consumed in the United States and across the globe. While an increasing amount of households are adopting solar power across the developed world, the spatial and socioeconomic factors that shape whether or not people adopt this technology is under-theorized (especially with regard to spatial drivers), and not well researched from an empirical perspective. In my dissertation, I present a conceptual model to describe and understand the socioeconomic and spatial factors affecting the diffusion of PV systems. I build my model on …
Eros The Man, Eros The Woman: Conflicting Identities And Gender Construction In The Catullan Corpus, Rebecca F. Boylan
Eros The Man, Eros The Woman: Conflicting Identities And Gender Construction In The Catullan Corpus, Rebecca F. Boylan
Classical Mediterranean and Middle East Honors Projects
The Catullan corpus is filled with widely varying and often incompatible constructions of gender. These contradictions reveal latent tensions between the poet’s masculine persona and personal pleasure, the latter of which often results in feminine modes of expression. Catullus’ poetic voice frequently transgresses traditional Roman boundaries between gender spheres, emphasizing the nebulous nature of ancient sexuality. Through an analysis of the gendered paradigms that inform the Catullan corpus, this paper examines these tensions between traditional masculine and feminine roles and ways in which these roles are reversed, especially in Catullus’ relationship with Lesbia. This paper analyzes Sapphic influences in Catullus …
Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker
Water Water Everywhere: Analyzing Long Island's Water Issues And Finding Solutions For A Sustainable Future, Anthony T. Becker
2014 Student Theses
Over three million people call Long Island their home. With access to beautiful landscapes, world-renowned beaches, and proximity to New York City, it is no wonder that so many proudly call this geographic stretch of glacial till their home. However, throughout the years our actions do not necessarily reflect this affection we have to our home. Years of sprawl and human infestation across the island have resulted in widespread environmental degradation. Specifically, the water we drink and the beaches we enjoy have become endangered. I plan on studying the urban ecology of how intensified population growth led to the eutrophication …

The accident occurred outside of cleared and marked area, in the bank of Panj River, just 3m away from water line. TL left his helmet and map case in the cleared area (found later in systematic technical survey lane), stepped over the marking and proceeded passing through the uncleared dangerous area towards to river. The foot prints on the ground are clearly visible where TL stepped over the marking. The distance (straight line) between this place and place of explosion is 77m.
A Dream Foreclosed: The Uneven Geography Of The Foreclosure Crisis In The Twin Cities, Zack Avre
A Dream Foreclosed: The Uneven Geography Of The Foreclosure Crisis In The Twin Cities, Zack Avre
Geography Honors Projects
Grounded in research on urban housing submarkets, this project assesses the spatial dynamics of the Twin Cities housing market leading up to the subprime mortgage crisis and analyzes the neighborhood impact of the resulting rise in foreclosures, particularly on historically marginalized communities. Constructing housing price histories from central core to outermost suburbs for five submarkets in the Twin Cities, this research reveals the uneven geography of housing bubbles and foreclosures across the metro region. Communities with high concentrations of people of color and low-income residents witnessed the greatest levels of housing value appreciation leading up to the housing crash. However, …

New World Propaganda: Pigafetta's Journal, World Maps, And New European Ideologies, 1525-1556, Megan Sympson
HIST 4800 Early America in the Atlantic World (Herndon)
Once Europeans discovered the New World, cartographers of the time began to map the Americas based on either their own experiences or accounts of others who visited the new land. These maps did not simply serve as navigational tools, but also were used as decorative objects containing elements of propaganda intended to shape opinions of the New World in the Old. In this paper, I examine Antonio Pigafetta’s journal, documenting the voyage of Magellen in 1519-22, and the world maps created after his journal was published. Six world maps by Diogo Ribeiro, Jean Rotz, Guillaume Brouscon, Sebastian Cabot, Pierre Desceliers, …

Communicating Shakespeare: How High School Educators Should Approach The Great Playwright, Samantha Defilippe
Communicating Shakespeare: How High School Educators Should Approach The Great Playwright, Samantha Defilippe
Honors Program Theses and Projects
This study is being done to show how relating Shakespeare’s plays, specifically the characters, themes, and events in his plays, to high school students can increase their appreciation and understanding of the famous writer. It discusses better methods for teaching Shakespeare than line-by-line interpretation so that students may see the valuable insight his works have to offer, rather than skimming the readings and using unreliable online resources, such as Sparknotes, because they are uninterested. Previous research has shown the importance of trying to relate readings to students so they are able to form a connection with the characters and main …
The Examination Of Healthy Eating Across Cultures: An Existential Phenomenological Approach, Sarah K. Simpson
The Examination Of Healthy Eating Across Cultures: An Existential Phenomenological Approach, Sarah K. Simpson
Honors College Theses
Adhering to a healthy eating plan has been a topic of discussion across World regions. Moreover, Americans often attempt to mimic the eating habits of other regions of the world, such as the Mediterranean or Eastern Asia, in an attempt to live a long and healthy life. Satia et al., (2000) suggest that healthy eating perceptions can be influenced by food and beverage exposure, family norms, preparation methods, and geographic locations. Although this is the case, little research has been found which has examined healthy eating perceptions across regions from a qualitative perspective. Thus, the purpose of this study is …
Cmsi Archive Translation: Chinese Sea Power Expansion And The State Of Sea Power In The Indian Ocean, Li Jian [李剑 ]
Cmsi Archive Translation: Chinese Sea Power Expansion And The State Of Sea Power In The Indian Ocean, Li Jian [李剑 ]
CMSI Translations
The article analyzes the strategic competition between China and India in the Indian Ocean, where both powers seek to expand sea power and secure critical chokepoints such as the Malacca Strait. It argues that China’s naval modernization and maritime presence challenge India’s traditional dominance and intersect with U.S. interests in maintaining regional stability. The author highlights that control of sea lanes and access to bases will shape future power balances, making maritime security in the Indian Ocean central to broader questions of hegemony and great-power rivalry.

Assessing Hydrologic And Water Quality Sensitivities To Precipitation Changes, Urban Growth And Land Management Using Swat, Alexander Michael Psaris
Assessing Hydrologic And Water Quality Sensitivities To Precipitation Changes, Urban Growth And Land Management Using Swat, Alexander Michael Psaris
Dissertations and Theses
Precipitation changes and urban growth are two factors altering the state of water quality. Changes in precipitation will alter the amount and timing of flows, and the corresponding sediment and nutrient dynamics. Meanwhile, densification associated with urban growth will create more impervious surfaces which will alter sediment and nutrient loadings. Land and water managers often rely on models to develop possible future scenarios and devise management responses to these projected changes. We use the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to assess the sensitivities of stream flow, sediment, and nutrient loads in two urbanizing watersheds in Northwest Oregon, USA to …

The Butler University Library, Fayetta Hall
Manuscripts
There are many features about our school which I admire, and there are surely some features which I have not yet learned to appreciate fully. One prominent feature which falls into both of these classes is the university library. My realization of its worth has increased with my growing knowledge of the library's history and development.
When our college was known as the Northwestern Christian University, it was located on College Avenue. As far as is known, no real library was then existant. However, as far back as 1873, a small room in the building was set aside and two …

A Healthy Digital Image: Exploring Its Impact On B2b Sales Lead Generation In A Professional Social Network, Jaclyn G. Getonga Ms.
Honors Scholar Theses
This project looks at the social media-selling environment and how a “healthy” digital image can assist a firm in identifying itself to create value for new customers. This project will explore whether the B2B sales lead generation process can be conducted as part of a social media strategy and how a digital image affects its performance. The sales landscape has changed: buyers have more power, relationships are based on two-way communication, and customer-centric technologies have enabled users to create, share, and converse about content over the Internet. A “healthy” digital image is based on the attributes of a LinkedIn company …

Parallel Sessions (Brand Management): Marketing Strategies To Raise Global Economy And Reduce Poverty Through Tourism Development In The Third World Countries- A Case Study Of Sindh, Munir Moosa Sadruddin
International Conference on Marketing
Tourism industry serves as a ray of hope for many developing countries. It is a source of sociocultural exchange, which not only boosts economy, but also improves the living standard of poor people. The research paper attempts to suggest strategies to reduce poverty in the developing countries through adaptation of pro- poor tourism techniques (Wood, 2005; Jamieson et al., 2004; Jamieson, 2003; Ashley et al., 2001). These techniques can also be used to restore the livelihood of people affected by natural calamities. Case study methodology has been used for this particular research. Single case study of Sindh has been taken …
Human Disease - Unintended Globalization, Christopher J. Dellana
Human Disease - Unintended Globalization, Christopher J. Dellana
Celebration
Before man was exchanging goods and ideas, he was exchanging germs. As such, the spread of infectious disease constitutes the first truly global phenomenon and, therefore, marks the beginnings—primitive though they may have been—of what today we have finally termed ‘globalization.’ The global spread of disease, then, proves that globalization is not new and that its origins were the result of a different narrative than the ones we read from globalization theorists; it further demonstrates that the modern conception of the phenomenon is only now so well recognized because the accelerated and efficient processes that inform its daily activities have …

Celebration
As a class, we are designing a research project for investigating how music teachers from counties in South-Central Pennsylvania use music from outside the Western canon (i.e. "world music"). We are performing a qualitative study by interviewing k-12 music teachers from school districts in South-Central Pennsylvania. Teachers may choose to participate in a focus group interview with other teachers or in one-on-one interviews. The focus group interview will not exceed two hours and the one-on-one interviews will not exceed an hour. The interviews will be guided using a questionnaire (see attached), but the conversation may deviate from these questions at …

“Sounding” Like Lake-Effect Snow: Evaluating The Thermodynamic And Synoptic Setup Of Northwest Indiana Lake-Effect Events Using Local Profiles And Numerical Modeling, Adam Brainard, Russell Danielson, Kaitlyn Heinlein, Kevin Wagner, Kevin Goebbert
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Lake-effect snow presents significant hazards for Northwest Indiana, which necessitates the need for accurate forecasts for these events. Recent radiosonde observations were taken routinely with radiosonde launches by Valparaiso University’s Aviation Team surrounding lake-effect events. From these soundings, thermodynamic environments are analyzed in conjunction with numerical simulations and official Green Bay soundings of 12 lake-effect precipitation events. This study will use the data from the sounding profiles and from numerical simulations to determine similarities and differences within the thermodynamic and synoptic environments surrounding these events. Through analysis of these pre-storm local environments, unique thresholds will be identified in environmental parameters …

Exploring Patterns In November Snowfall Using Gis Mapping And Analysis, Dana Koning, Alex Carne, Bharath Ganesh Babu
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
A Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis was generated to examine patterns in November snowfall climatology for 47 observing stations surrounding Lake Michigan. Snowfall data compiled for each year from 1950 to 2012 was mapped using an interpolation method called kriging, which is a spatial analyst tool. Some of the data mapped includes average snowfall for the Lake Michigan region, number of days with measurable snowfall, number of days with snow on the ground, and correlation between snowfall and temperature. Overall, these maps show maximums in north-central and southwestern Michigan decreasing to the south, as expected. The first three loadings of …

Synoptic And Lake-Effect Classification Of Snowfall In The Lake Michigan Region: Deriving Clarity Using Wrf Simulations, Alex Caruthers, Ryan Connelly
Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)
Lake-effect snowfall in the area surrounding Lake Michigan often forms in the wake of a synoptic-scale system that also produces precipitation, making it difficult to differentiate lake-effect events from synoptic-scale system events. This differentiation is necessary in constructing a climatology of lake-effect snowfall events. As part of an ongoing project to construct a database of November lake-effect snowfall events in the regions surrounding Lake Michigan, simulations from the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model are used to identify precipitation in ambiguous cases as either resulting from lake-effect snowfall or a synoptic-scale system. This unique database includes more than 900 events …
