Community Assistance For Refugees And Gender Roles: What Could Make This C.A.R. Run Better?, Nathan E. Meyer

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Community Assistance for Refugees is a non-profit service organization in downtown Mankato, Minnesota. Secondary migration to southern Minnesota has increased the refugee population as well as the need for research assessing the needs and concerns of refugees. The purpose of this project was two-fold: first to analyze how C.A.R. is able to meet the needs of its clients and second, to investigate ways in which C.A.R. could improve its services. Traditionally female refugees are less educated and less mainstreamed into American society. This research was designed to help all clients, but special attention was paid to the specific needs of …

The Place Of Power: The Christian Acquisition Of The Roman Basilica, Tysen Dauer Aug 2014

The Place Of Power: The Christian Acquisition Of The Roman Basilica, Tysen Dauer

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Architecture provides a cultural window into peoples’ thoughts, actions, and beliefs. This is especially true of religious architecture. The modern phenomenon of the “megachurch” has resulted from a period of transition for Christians which is strikingly similar to the situation which faced Christians in the 4th century A.D. How the early Christians dealt with their building needs and how modern Christians are dealing with theirs provides an insight into how both the practice of Christianity and the culture in which it is practiced has changed. Research showed that the situations in which these structures were built had much in common: …

Responding To Foreclosures In Cuyahoga County: 2013 Evaluation Report, Kathryn Hexter, Molly Schnoke

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In 2005, Cuyahoga County became one of the first places in the nation to respond to the rapid increase in the number of residential foreclosure filings. In response to concerns raised by suburban mayors, the County developed a comprehensive foreclosure prevention initiative. The County’s response was multi-faceted and included modifications to the judicial foreclosure process to make foreclosures faster and fairer, greater coordination across County agencies involved in foreclosures such as the sheriff, the prosecutor, the treasurer and the recorder. A key facet of the response was the creation of the Cuyahoga County Foreclosure Prevention Program (CCFPP) which involves face …

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research is to better understand how residents of communities located on the flanks of Kilauea, Hawai'i view the hazards associated with volcanic events taking into account hazard proximity, cultural beliefs, municipal trust, and evacuation planning. Socio-Spatial Transformation And Contested Space At The Street Level In Latin America: The Case Of Cali, Colombia, Maria Janeth Mosquera Becerra

Dissertations and Theses

Since 2008, more than 50% of the world's population has lived in cities and it is projected that by 2050 around 87% will do so. This dissertation examines socio-spatial transformation processes related to urbanization, economic development and the marginalization of utilitarian cycling in Cali, Colombia, as a particular expression of the struggle for transportation space occurring in urban areas. The research analyzes (a) the socio-spatial processes that have restricted the use of bicycles as a means of transportation in the city of Cali, Colombia; and (b) the …

Crime And Supermarket Locations: Implications For Food Access, Adam N. Rabinowitz Aug 2014

Crime And Supermarket Locations: Implications For Food Access, Adam N. Rabinowitz

Doctoral Dissertations

Food access in the United States has become a major policy issue that has received increased attention due to concerns of equality, health, and economic development. Since the initial academic research began to call attention to this issue a variety of tools have been developed to help identify geographic areas that have limited access to food. Supermarkets have taken the main focus as they provide for opportunities for fresh foods, greater variety, and lower prices.

While the existing research has looked to describe factors that explain the characteristics of communities with reduced supermarket access, crime has often been ignored or …

Ichnology Of Carboniferous And Jurassic Tetrapods And Insects, Patrick R. Gonsoulin-Getty Aug 2014

Ichnology Of Carboniferous And Jurassic Tetrapods And Insects, Patrick R. Gonsoulin-Getty

Doctoral Dissertations

Ichnology is the study of trace fossils, which are important because they provide direct evidence of animal behavior and because, as sedimentary structures, they are often preserved in environments devoid of body fossils. This study examines why skeletons are rare in New England and uses ichnology to evaluate the behaviors of its Carboniferous and Jurassic inhabitants.

The first chapter addresses taphonomic processes that preserved dinosaur bones from Connecticut as molds. The animal’s body decomposed above ground, where its skeleton disarticulated and was transported fluvially. The bones were buried and dissolved underground due to acidic groundwater. Their preservation as molds provides …
