Rural-Urban Differences In The Utilization Of Maternal Healthcare In Ghana: The Case Of Antenatal And Delivery Services, Gloria Afful-Mensah, Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, Louis Boakye-Yiadom Aug 2014

Rural-Urban Differences In The Utilization Of Maternal Healthcare In Ghana: The Case Of Antenatal And Delivery Services, Gloria Afful-Mensah, Edward Nketiah-Amponsah, Louis Boakye-Yiadom

African Social Science Review

Although maternal health in Ghana has generally improved over the past two decades, the current MMR implies that Ghana‟s MMR is approximately 2.4 times higher than the set target in MDG 5. Using data from the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey 2008, an attempt is made in this study to investigate the rural-urban differences in maternal health care (antenatal and delivery care) service utilization in Ghana. Most previous studies focused more broadly on the utilization of MHC services either in the entire country or some parts of the country. This study fills the gap by looking at women from the …

Religious Beliefs About Suffering: Measure Validation And Relationships With Well-Being, Amy Hale Aug 2014

Religious Beliefs About Suffering: Measure Validation And Relationships With Well-Being, Amy Hale

Doctoral Dissertations

Beliefs are central to all world religions, but there is limited data on the relationships between specific religious beliefs and well-being. This dissertation presents findings from two studies of beliefs about suffering using the Views of Suffering Scale (VOSS; Hale-Smith, Park, & Edmondson, 2012).

Study 1 was a cross-sectional validation study using an online sample of 1000 participants self-identified as Catholic, Protestant, Atheist/Agnostic, Hindu, Muslim, or Jewish. Measures included information regarding demographics and measures of religious history and beliefs. Results of Study 1 indicated differences in beliefs based on age, geographic region, religious affiliation, and how religious or spiritual participants …

The Virtues Of Law In The Politics Of Religious Freedom, Benjamin Berger Aug 2014

The Virtues Of Law In The Politics Of Religious Freedom, Benjamin Berger

Articles & Book Chapters

The moral force and capacity for inspiration of both religion and politics alike arise in part from the sense that they authentically map the world as we nd it, yielding claims about how it should be. This paper asks what role we might imagine for law in this “hyperreal” world of religion and politics, arguing that law can display distinctive virtues linked to its capacity for strategic agnosticism about the real. Applying Sunstein’s idea of “incompletely theorized agreements” to the politics of religious freedom, the paper examines the role of law as a tool of adhesion in two very different …

The analysis of introgression of genomic regions between divergent populations provides an excellent opportunity to determine the genetic basis of reproductive isolation during the early stages of speciation. However, hybridization and subsequent gene flow must be relatively common in order to localize individual loci that resist introgression. In this study, we used next-generation sequencing to study genome-wide patterns of genetic differentiation between two hybridizing subspecies of rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus algirus and O. c. cuniculus) that are known to undergo high rates of gene exchange. Our primary objective was to identify specific genes or genomic regions that have resisted …

Spatial Intelligence And The Ability To Comprehend And Execute Textual/Graphical Instructions, Anthony Wacholtz Aug 2014

Spatial Intelligence And The Ability To Comprehend And Execute Textual/Graphical Instructions, Anthony Wacholtz

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

Performing a task such as solving a Rubik’s cube can be very difficult, but it can be done after enough twists and turns. However, only an individual with extremely high spatial intelligence could be expected to solve a Rubik’s cube in his or her head. Discussing the concept of spatial intelligence, Howard Gardner makes it clear that “...Spatial intelligence is closely tied to, and grows directly out of, one’s observations of the visual world.” The term spatial intelligence, as it pertains to my research, derives from the ability to visualize and manipulate three-dimensional objects in your mind. In this experiment, …

Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins Aug 2014

Infinite Horizon: The Prairie Spirituality Of Ronald Rolheiser, Michael W. Higgins

Mission & Culture Publications

Ronald Rolheiser, president of the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio Texas (but a native of the Saskatchewan prairie), is one of the most popular Catholic spiritual writers and syndicated columnists at work today.

What some critics see as Rolheiser’s complacency, his supposedly uncritical embrace of modern secular society, is actually borne of his remarkable faith and confidence in God’s abiding presence and care. Like the philosopher Charles Taylor, a fellow Canadian and Catholic, Rolheiser is keenly aware that modern liberal values such as tolerance and benevolence, and especially respect for individual dignity and freedom, have deep Christian roots.

Isaac Merritt Singer: A Womanizer Who Liberated Women, Sharon Hughes Aug 2014

Isaac Merritt Singer: A Womanizer Who Liberated Women, Sharon Hughes

History Theses

Isaac Merritt Singer's life chronicles the rise of a common man who, while lacking wealth, linage, and education, was able to achieve tremendous success and fortune in nineteenth-century America. Singer is the archetypical self-made man or the perfect rags to riches icon. His wealth came from a machine that he skillfully perfected, cleverly marketed, and relentlessly promoted. Singer's machine made him a very wealthy man and placed him in command of his destiny. In telling the saga of this self-made man, another story is illuminated, that of the women of the nineteenth century. Singer's story is enmeshed with the stories …

Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx Californianus) Home Range And Habitat Selection In West Texas, Andrea E. Montalvo, Dean Ransom Jr., Roel R. Lopez Aug 2014

Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx Californianus) Home Range And Habitat Selection In West Texas, Andrea E. Montalvo, Dean Ransom Jr., Roel R. Lopez

Western North American Naturalist

We studied Greater Roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) habitat use during spring and summer 2011 on the Rolling Plains Quail Research Ranch in the Red Rolling Plains of west Texas. We captured 9 roadrunners (1 male, 8 females) and fitted each with a 10-g backpack-style radio-transmitter. We relocated roadrunners 2–4 times per week from February to August. Roadrunners used a mean minimum convex polygon home range of 43.0 ha, a 50% core range of 11.9 ha, and 33% overlap between adjacent home ranges. Home ranges were approximately half the size of those reported in a recent study of roadrunners in …

Regional Branching Relationships In Carnegiea Gigantea, A Keystone Cactus, Taly Dawn Drezner Aug 2014

Regional Branching Relationships In Carnegiea Gigantea, A Keystone Cactus, Taly Dawn Drezner

Western North American Naturalist

The large columnar cactus Carnegiea gigantea branches to increase reproductive output. The branches of this keystone species also provide shelter to a large portion of the Sonoran Desert’s fauna. In this study, branch length was used to reconstruct branch establishment at 2 populations to determine branching patterns over time and the relationship across populations. Branches showed high establishment but relatively low survival. Either more branches establish than eventually survive or growth is slow when branches are smaller, thereby biasing the distribution of lengths due to the differences in growth rate. Also, the distribution of branch lengths (i.e., branch generation over …

Survey Of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) From The Kuskokwim River Watershed In Western Alaska, Barbara L. Hayford, Robert L. Newell, Zach J. Crete Aug 2014

Survey Of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) From The Kuskokwim River Watershed In Western Alaska, Barbara L. Hayford, Robert L. Newell, Zach J. Crete

Western North American Naturalist

Rapidly declining diversity of freshwater species necessitates surveys to document and describe patterns in biodiversity. To this end, a survey of Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) was conducted in a remote watershed of western Alaska. Larval chironomids were collected from 16 stream sites in the Kuskokwim River watershed in 2009 and 2010. Twenty-seven chironomid taxa were identified. Orthocladiinae was the most diverse subfamily and was numerically dominant at all sites except a glacial runoff stream where Diamesinae was numerically dominant. Two rare chironomids were collected in the study: an undescribed species of Stilocladius and a species ofOrthocladius (Mesorthocladius). The …

Biogeography Of Ammophila (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) In The Grand Canyon Ecoregion, Southwestern Usa, Lawrence E. Stevens, Arnold S. Menke Aug 2014

Biogeography Of Ammophila (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae) In The Grand Canyon Ecoregion, Southwestern Usa, Lawrence E. Stevens, Arnold S. Menke

Western North American Naturalist

We compiled distribution data on Ammophila collected in the Grand Canyon ecoregion (GCE) in northern Arizona and southern Utah. We report 35 species occurring from 350 to 2865 m elevation. Three new state records are reported for Arizona and one for Utah. A total of 73.8%–80.5% of the 41 Arizona Ammophila species occur in the GCE, and 16 species were detected in Grand Canyon National Park. Four species in Utah’s portion of the GCE are not known to occur in Arizona. Five Ammophila species were frequently captured (A. azteca, A. pruinosa complex, A. breviceps, A. acuta, and A. strenua …

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, Gillian Blakely, Catherine Hennessy, Man C. Chung, Heather Skirton Aug 2014

The Impact Of Foreign Postings On Accompanying Military Spouses: An Ethnographic Study, Gillian Blakely, Catherine Hennessy, Man C. Chung, Heather Skirton

All Works

As part of an ethnographic study, the impact of foreign postings on spouses who accompany military personnel was explored. Individual interviews and focus groups with 34 British military spouses based in one location in southern Europe were conducted. Key findings suggested that reaction to a foreign posting was a reflection of personal attitudes, prior experiences, support, ability to adjust to change and strength of relationship with the serving spouse and community. For many the experience was positive due to the increased opportunity for family time, for others this helped to compensate for the difficulties experienced. Some military spouses experienced significant …

Designing An Articulation-Agreement Database For The College Of Science And Engineering And Technology Advising Center, Stephanie Fasen, Susan Hendley, Tim Pham, Danish Zaman

Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato

During their academic careers, some college students transfer to different universities. To allow students to transfer seamlessly to other colleges, advisors at Minnesota universities create articulation agreements that list the classes that transfer between two universities. To use these documents, students and advisors must search through binders to find the correct articulation agreement and then manually review it. This is a time-consuming process for both students and advisors. To make this information more accessible, we created a web-based database that instantly produces a list of equivalent classes for majors offered at Minnesota St ate University, Mankato (MSU) and other Minnesota …

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

This paper presents initial efforts to establish the San Juan Urban Long-Term Research Area Exploratory (ULTRA-Ex), a long-term program aimed at developing transdisciplinary social-ecological system (SES) research to address vulnerability and sustainability for the municipality of San Juan. Transdisciplinary approaches involve the collaborations between researchers, stakeholders, and citizens to produce socially-relevant knowledge and support decision-making. We characterize the transdisciplinary arrangement emerging in San Juan ULTRA-Ex as a knowledge-action network composed of multiple formal and informal actors (e.g., scientists, policymakers, civic organizations and other stakeholders) where knowledge, ideas, and strategies for sustainability are being produced, evaluated, and validated. We describe in …
