Temperature Changes In Central Asia From 1979 To 2011 Based On Multiple Datasets, Zengyun Hu, Chi Zhang, Q. Steven Hu, Hanqin Tian

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

The arid and semiarid region in central Asia is sensitive and vulnerable to climate variations. However, the sparse and highly unevenly distributed meteorological stations in the region provide limited data for understanding of the region’s climate variations. In this study, the near-surface air temperature change in central Asia from 1979 to 2011 was examined using observations from 81 meteorological stations, three local observation validated reanalysis datasets of relatively high spatial resolutions, and the Climate Research Unit (CRU) dataset. Major results suggested that the three reanalysis datasets match well with most of the local climate records, especially in the low-lying plain …

Reflective Blogging As Part Of Ict Professional Development To Support Pedagogical Change, Sarah J. Prestridge Feb 2014

Reflective Blogging As Part Of Ict Professional Development To Support Pedagogical Change, Sarah J. Prestridge

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Reflection is considered an inherent part of teacher practice. However, when used within professional development activity, it is fraught with issues associated with teacher confidence and skill in reflective action. Coupled with anxiety generally associated with technological competency and understanding the nature of blogging, constructive reflection is difficult for teachers. This paper focuses on the reflective quality of teachers’ blogs. It describes teachers’ perceptions and engagement in reflective activity as part of an ICT professional development program. Reflective entries are drawn from a series of blogs that are analysed qualitatively using Hatton’s and Smith’s (1995) three levels of reflection-on-action. The …

Book abstract:

Feminism has re-shaped the way we think about equality, power relations and social change. Recent feminist scholarship has provided new theoretical frameworks, methodologies and empirical analyses of how gender and feminism are situated within the development process.Global Perspectives on Gender and Space: Engaging Feminism and Development draws upon this framework to explore the effects of globalization on development in diverse geographical contexts. It explores how women’s and men’s lives are gendered in specific spaces as well as across multiple landscapes.

Particle Filtering For Frequency Estimation From Acoustic Time-Series In Dispersive Media, Nattapol Aunsri Jan 2014

Particle Filtering For Frequency Estimation From Acoustic Time-Series In Dispersive Media, Nattapol Aunsri

Dissertations

Acoustic signals propagating in the ocean carry information about geometry and environmental parameters within the propagation medium. Accurately retrieving this information leads us to effectively estimate parameters that are of utmost importance in environmental studies, climate monitoring, and defense. This dissertation focuses on the development of sequential Bayesian filtering methods to obtain accurate estimates of instantaneous frequencies using Short Term Fourier Transforms within the acoustic field measured at an array of hydrophones, which can be used in a subsequent step for the estimation of propagation related parameters. We develop a particle filter to estimate these frequencies along with modal amplitudes, …

Public Private Partnership In Transit Projects, Rashmita Daschaudhuri Jan 2014

Public Private Partnership In Transit Projects, Rashmita Daschaudhuri

Theses

The government is cutting down government impediments and entering into the market. One of the outcomes has been the rise of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs). There have been a lot of information and transaction cost problems in government institutions. These issues can be sorted and mitigated if the risk is shared with the private sector.

Until 1990, there had been a monopoly of the public sector developing transit projects. Now with the PPP concept, the transit projects are slowly moving into public private partnership agreements. This study tries to identify the various approaches of public private partnership delivery system. A few …

Personality And Axiological Model Moa In The Sense Of The Quality Of Life Of Senior Managers, Barbara Mróz Jan 2014

Personality And Axiological Model Moa In The Sense Of The Quality Of Life Of Senior Managers, Barbara Mróz

European Management Studies

In this paper I have attempted to present issues resulting from the management and personality psychology, including their implications for company management practice and for their impact on managers wellbeing and a quality of life. My research, based on Ryan and Deci concept, concerns the psychological needs, adaptation (Rotter) and hierarchical values (Rokeach) of senior managers. I assumed that the sense of the quality of life would reveal a significant relationship with personality-related and axiological dimensions among senior managers. I hypothesized positive correlation between independent personality related variables distinguished in the personality and axiological model MOA for the sense of …

Environmental Aquatic Resource Sensing: Basic Sciences, Business Education, And Outreach, Laura G. Leff, Darren L. Bade, Jonathan Scaffidi, Craig E. Williamson, Chris Woolverton

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Freshwater resources are critical features of the landscape and are threatened by many phenomena (e.g., eutrophication, invasive species, climate change, acid rain). The importance of fresh waters requires that scientists continually improve their tactics and technologies for broader understanding. Increasing use of automated sensors to collect environmental data creates a need for training of environmental scientists. In this paper, we present case studies based on a doctoral training program. For each case study presented, the goals and overall recommendations for adaptation to other programs are discussed. Case studies were selected based on recommendations of external evaluators of the program, the …

The Influence Of Topographic And Dynamic Cyclic Variables On The Distribution Of Small Cetaceans In A Shallow Coastal System, Marijke N. De Boer, Mark P. Simmonds, Peter J.H. Reijnders, Geert Aarts Jan 2014

The Influence Of Topographic And Dynamic Cyclic Variables On The Distribution Of Small Cetaceans In A Shallow Coastal System, Marijke N. De Boer, Mark P. Simmonds, Peter J.H. Reijnders, Geert Aarts

Ecology Collection

The influence of topographic and temporal variables on cetacean distribution at a fine-scale is still poorly understood. To study the spatial and temporal distribution of harbour porpoise Phocoena phocoena and the poorly known Risso’s dolphin Grampus griseus we carried out land-based observations from Bardsey Island (Wales, UK) in summer (2001–2007). Using Kernel analysis and Generalized Additive Models it was shown that porpoises and Risso’s appeared to be linked to topographic and dynamic cyclic variables with both species using different core areas (dolphins to the West and porpoises to the East off Bardsey). Depth, slope and aspect and a low variation …

College of Forest Resources and Environmental Science Publications

Decentralized stormwater management approaches (e.g., biofiltration swales, pervious pavement, green roofs, rain gardens) that capture, detain, infiltrate, and filter runoff are now commonly used to minimize the impacts of stormwater runoff from impervious surfaces on aquatic ecosystems. However, there is little research on the effectiveness of retrofit, parcel-scale stormwater management practices for improving downstream aquatic ecosystem health. A reverse auction was used to encourage homeowners to mitigate stormwater on their property within the suburban, 1.8 km2 Shepherd Creek catchment in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA). In 2007–2008, 165 rain barrels and 81 rain gardens were installed on 30% of the properties …

Stochasticity In Natural Forage Production Affects Use Of Urban Areas By Black Bears: Implications To Management Of Human-Bear Conflicts, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Kenneth R. Wilson, David L. Lewis, John Broderick, Julie S. Mao, Stewart W. Breck Jan 2014

Stochasticity In Natural Forage Production Affects Use Of Urban Areas By Black Bears: Implications To Management Of Human-Bear Conflicts, Sharon Baruch-Mordo, Kenneth R. Wilson, David L. Lewis, John Broderick, Julie S. Mao, Stewart W. Breck

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

The rapid expansion of global urban development is increasing opportunities for wildlife to forage and become dependent on anthropogenic resources. Wildlife using urban areas are often perceived dichotomously as urban or not, with some individuals removed in the belief that dependency on anthropogenic resources is irreversible and can lead to increased human-wildlife conflict. For American black bears (Ursus americanus), little is known about the degree of bear urbanization and its ecological mechanisms to guide the management of human-bear conflicts. Using 6 years of GPS location and activity data from bears in Aspen, Colorado, USA, we evaluated the degree of bear …

Energy Input Is Primary Controller Of Methane Bubbling In Subarctic Lakes, Martin Wik, Brett F. Thornton, David Bastviken, Sally Macintyre, Ruth K. Varner, Patrick M. Crill

Faculty Publications

Emission of methane (CH4) from surface waters is often dominated by ebullition (bubbling), a transport mode with high‐spatiotemporal variability. Based on new and extensive CH4 ebullition data, we demonstrate striking correlations (r2 between 0.92 and 0.997) when comparing seasonal bubble CH4 flux from three shallow subarctic lakes to four readily measurable proxies of incoming energy flux and daily flux magnitudes to surface sediment temperature (r2 between 0.86 and 0.94). Our results after continuous multiyear sampling suggest that CH4 ebullition is a predictable process, and that heat flux into the lakes is the dominant driver of gas production and release. Future …
