Analyzing Geological Materials Under Martian Conditions Using Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy : Plasma Fundamentals, Sample Classification, And Trace Element Quanitification, Ann Ollila

Earth and Planetary Sciences ETDs

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is an emission spectroscopy analysis technique that continues to be developed for the study of solids, liquids and gases. Geological applications for LIBS are a particularly exciting area of research, in part due to the capabilities of the technique to quickly and simultaneously detect nearly all major, minor and trace elements on unprepared samples either in a laboratory setting or in situ. A significant advancement in LIBS research is the recent deployment of ChemCam to the surface of Mars at Gale crater onboard the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) rover, Curiosity. ChemCam consists of a LIBS instrument …

The Use Of Opal Phytolith Analysis In A Comprehensive Environmental Study: An Example From 19th-Century Lowell, Massachusetts, William F. Fisher, Gerald K. Kelso

Northeast Historical Archaeology

The value of opal phytolith analysis is demonstrated in a comprehensive environmental study of a historical site, the Kirk Street Agents' House, Lowell, Massachusett. A method to measure phytolith degradation percentages is tested and shown to yield similar results to pollen corrosion indices; further research on this new method is suggested, however. Fluctuations in two classes of grass phytoliths indicate changing environmental conditions that support and expand upon changes noted in the pollen spectra. The results of the phytolith analysis are integrated with information derived from documentary research, artifactual analysis, stratigraphic interpretation, and other ethnobotanical methods to arrive at conclusions …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

There is widespread concern that fire exclusion has led to an unprecedented threat of uncharacteristically severe fires in ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws) and mixed-conifer forests of western North America. These extensive montane forests are considered to be adapted to a low/moderate-severity fire regime that maintained stands of relatively old trees. However, there is increasing recognition from landscape-scale assessments that, prior to any significant effects of fire exclusion, fires and forest structure were more variable in these forests. Biota in these forests are also dependent on the resources made available by higher-severity fire. A better understanding of …

Environmental Dispute Resolution Program: Year 2 Accomplishments: February 2013 – January 2014, Michele Straube

Environmental Dispute Resolution Program

The Stegner Center’s EDR Program encompasses four general categories of activity designed to support and expand the use of EDR in Utah and the Mountain West: academic instruction, capacity-building, public education, and facilitation/mediation services. One primary focus of this first year’s efforts was on meeting with a cross-section of stakeholder interests working on environmental and natural resource issues to introduce the new program and to get their insights on how the program can be most helpful in promoting constructive dialogue on these issues. An equally important focus was to start establishing a track record of accomplishments in each of the …

Counting Carbon: The Politics Of Carbon Footprints And Climate Governance From The Individual To The Global, James Morton Turner Feb 2014

Counting Carbon: The Politics Of Carbon Footprints And Climate Governance From The Individual To The Global, James Morton Turner

Faculty Research and Scholarship

This article considers carbon footprints as a form of climate governance. Drawing on science studies to consider the contingent nature of calculative devices and governmentality studies to examine the intrinsic relationship between how problems are framed and remedied, this article advances two arguments. First, it argues that efforts to define and deploy carbon footprints contributed to a conceptual shift in emissions accounting, from a narrower metric focused on emissions from fossil fuel and electricity use—Carbon Footprint 1.0—to a more expansive metric that includes emissions embodied in consumption and trade—Carbon Footprint 2.0. Second, this article argues that these approaches to carbon …

Teach Your Children Well, Penny A. James; Karla A. Henderson; Aram Attarian Feb 2014

Teach Your Children Well, Penny A. James; Karla A. Henderson; Aram Attarian

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

The nature of outdoor play has changed. Today children increasingly spend their free time in adult-led activities and indoor play (Hofferth & Sandberg, 2001). Concerns regarding this societal shift gained mainstream attention with the publication of Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder (Louv, 2005). A back-to-nature movement ensued at national, state, and local levels with parks and recreation organizations creating programs designed to get children back into wild environments (e.g., Children in Nature Programs offered by the National Park Service). We proposed that the conversation surrounding the back-to-nature movement missed the mark on two critical …

Now That I Know The Effects..., Mary Breunig

Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

What ought and can be done about environmental degradation is contested and relates to opinions regarding fundamental cause(s). One of the solutions commonly suggested is education. One particular educational initiative in Ontario is the integrated Environmental Studies Programs (ESPs), wherein environmental topics are integrated into a holistic and interdisciplinary curriculum model taught at the secondary school level to students who register for a “package” of courses and spend the full semester with one to two teachers and a single student cohort (Russell & Burton, 2000; Sharpe & Breunig, 2009). The full-day cohort structure of ESPs provides for environmentally related experiential …
