Managing Complex Water Resource Systems For Ecological Integrity: Evaluating Tradeoffs And Uncertainty, Ryan Morrison
Managing Complex Water Resource Systems For Ecological Integrity: Evaluating Tradeoffs And Uncertainty, Ryan Morrison
Civil Engineering ETDs
Water resource systems often contain numerous components that are intertwined or contradictory, such as power production, water delivery, recreation, and environmental needs. This complexity makes it difficult to holistically assess management alternatives. In addition, hydroclimatic and ecological uncertainties complicate efforts to evaluate the impacts of management scenarios. We need new tools that are able to inform managers and researchers of the tradeoffs or consequences associated with flow alternatives, while also explicitly incorporating sources of uncertainty. My research addresses this limitation using two modeling approaches: stochastic system dynamics modeling and Bayesian network modeling. Specifically, the objectives of my research were 1) …
Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac
Connecting People And Place: Farmers, Resilience, And The Future Of Smallholder Farms In Albuquerque, Crystiana Baca-Bosiljevac
Geography ETDs
This paper compares scholarly concepts of resilience with primary factors influencing Albuquerque's smallholder farmers' decisions to continue farming. In doing so, it highlights the voices of local farmers and critically examines the scope and limitations of resilience theory. Although resilience theory has gained popularity as a tool for understanding complex social-ecological systems, recent scholarship questions the applicability of resilience to social systems. In particular, questions have been raised as to whether current resilience theory adequately addresses issues of power and agency. By focusing on farmers as decision makers, this paper seeks to evaluate these claims by examining the utility of …

Just before Thanksgiving Day last November, Kent Wommack '77 got the classic good-news, bad-news, worse-news call. Wommack is head of The Nature Conservancy in Maine, and the caller was a timberland manager who had asked Wommack to back a client in acquiring prime acres of Maine forest on the upper St. John River, one of the most unspoiled waterways left in the United States. The good news was that the owner had agreed to sell the breathtaking chunk of land in the first place. The bad news was that the client was no longer interested in the deal. The worse …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library
Each year Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list to inspire students and the rest of the campus community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read.
In addition to a plethora of fiction, non-fiction, and film picks, this year's edition includes the following special sections:
- Nordic Noir (recommendations by Sunni DeNicola)
- Great Reads from Guelzo (history recommendations by Dr. Allen Guelzo)

Epidemiology Of Coccidioidomycosis In Missouri, Ravi Kumar Aggu Sher
Epidemiology Of Coccidioidomycosis In Missouri, Ravi Kumar Aggu Sher
Open Access Theses
Introduction. Incidence of Coccidioidomycosis has been increasing nationally, from 2,271 cases in 1998 to 17,802 cases in 2012. Missouri is not endemic to Coccidioidomycosis but the incidence has been increasing since becoming reportable in 2003. To describe epidemiology of Coccidioidomycosis in Missouri we conducted a retrospective review of surveillance data at Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services (DHSS) for the years, 2004-2013.
Methods. Data was obtained from Missouri Health Surveillance Information System (WebSurv), the statewide reporting system for notifiable diseases. All cases that were "Confirmed" were included in the study.
Results. There were a total of 93 confirmed cases …

Landscape Evolution Of Menikio Mountain (Macedonia, Greece) Based On Morphological And Sedimentological Analyses Of Caves, Christos Pennos
Landscape Evolution Of Menikio Mountain (Macedonia, Greece) Based On Morphological And Sedimentological Analyses Of Caves, Christos Pennos
KIP Articles
The present study examines the landscape evolution of the Menikio Mountain based on morphological features that are evident inside the caves. The various evolutionary stages of the Mountain's landscape development are dated. In addition, a paleoclimatic reconstruction for the broader area is attempted. For this approach two stalagmites have been selected from the Mikro and Megalo Eptamilon caves. U - series dating techniques were used in order to determine the exact time spam of the records and in order to obtain the paleoclimatic signal, measurements of δ18O and δ13C were performed along the growth axis of the stalagmites. The project …
