Advice To A Freshman, Richard G. Finley Dec 2014

Advice To A Freshman, Richard G. Finley

Manuscripts

So you're a freshman! So you're coming to college for the first time! Well, heed this dying sigh of a scarred veteran of the battle of Jelly Hall.

First, my freshman, live each day as though it were the last before a final exam. Procrastination is a device of the devil, and thy soul goes down the River Styx with it .

Joe, Russell Miller Dec 2014

Joe, Russell Miller

Manuscripts

No one knows his last name, but that does not matter. He is one of those cosmopolitans, the type found all over the world, that are of no particular nationality. His most striking feature is his sparkling brown eyes, set in a face that has been tanned and hardened through years of sea-faring. Although he must be at least sixty-five, his jet black hair and vigorous energy give him the appearance of a man of fifty. He is invariably clad in blue denim pants, a black jacket, and an old tweed cap. He is a carpenter, plumber, painter, electrician, a …

Interview With Victor Kolar, Peggy Eileen Rose

Manuscripts

"Praise is just as important as rebuke," was the sentiment expressed by Victor Kolar, former conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, in a recent interview. Mr. Kolar, although still a resident of Detroit, spends one day a week in Indianapolis teaching violin and conducting the Arthur Jordan Symphony Orchestra.

Madam Marquet, Ida Marie Luck Dec 2014

Madam Marquet, Ida Marie Luck

Manuscripts

Madame Marquet chatted gaily to the little squirrel that sat watching her from the porch steps while she waited for her neighbor to come to the door.

"Caesar, you're a leel rascal, that's w ha t," she teased softly, "but if you come over after while, Mama will geeve you something to eat."

The squirrel cocked his head to one side as though he were puzzled by her French flavored language; then he scampered quickly away as the front door opened. Madame Marquet giggled at his antics, wrinkling her nose in the manner of a high school girl.

The European Rooms in Miniature, by Mrs. James Ward Thorne, exhibited at John Herron Art Institute contain the depth of reality and the realm of fantasy. The realization that the objects in these rooms are perfect miniature replicas of exemplary period furnishings catches one's imagination.

I SCHOOL IN VIRGINIA

School is a very important factor in a person's life. There are innumerable public schools all over America; each there for the same purpose. It is interesting to note that each state has an almost entirely different curriculum. The schools in Virginia stress culture. It is put far above the three "R's". The particular school I have in mind is the Jeb Stuart Grade School in Richmond. This two story building surrounded by spacious grounds in a clean residential section makes a pleasant place to start to school. Life in a Virginia grade school is leisurely. …

Scale As A Key Factor For Sustainable Water Management In Northwest Honduras, E. Christian Wells, Karla L. Davis-Salazar, Jose E. Moreno-Cortes Dec 2014

Scale As A Key Factor For Sustainable Water Management In Northwest Honduras, E. Christian Wells, Karla L. Davis-Salazar, Jose E. Moreno-Cortes

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

In northwest Honduras, community-based interventions by outside development agencies seeking to assist communities with the treatment and delivery of potable water have been largely ineffective. This article examines the social, economic, ecological, and engineered contexts of gravity-fed water systems in the Palmarejo Valley of this region, identifying key barriers to long-term sustainability. Drawing from the results of our mixed-methods research in the valley incorporating ethnographic and spatial analyses along with water quality testing, we outline the limitations of community-based development approaches that ignore the broader social and political scales of resource inequalities. We find that water provisioning often requires coordination …

A Great Master, Maxine Demlow Dec 2014

A Great Master, Maxine Demlow

Manuscripts

In a huge, deep, easy chair, a bit to the side of the enormous fireplace, reclined an elderly, distinguished-looking gentleman in whose face were indented the lines belonging to fatigue and age. Calmly he sat there, peacefully smoking his beloved, favorite pipe, one of those old English types, providing a deep bowl with a huge capacity for tobacco, one quite resembling the pipe of the famed, illustrious character, Sherlock Holmes. The smoke curled around his head until it gave the appearance of a hazy, misty wreath entwined above him. The gentleman was deeply, profoundly engaged in thought. This was easily …

The Thicket, Joan Hayden Dec 2014

The Thicket, Joan Hayden

Manuscripts

As I scuff through the fallen leaves these days, I find my thoughts turning constantly to The Thicket, my former home in southern Indiana. Autumn will be arriving there, too, and I wonder what it must be like there now. Indian summer must bring dreams to the old place of all the years that have gone, and of the seasons past now. I wonder if it will ever be spring there again?

Adoption Of Citizen Science Practices: A Case Study Of The Billfish Foundation’S Tag And Release Online Database, Daniel Dinicola Dec 2014

Adoption Of Citizen Science Practices: A Case Study Of The Billfish Foundation’S Tag And Release Online Database, Daniel Dinicola

Open Access Theses

Almost the entirety of our understanding of billfish science comes from recreational fishing and constituent based tag and release programs. A uniform, global resource where anglers can participate and view their efforts in action will greatly contribute to the understanding, conservation, and management of these mysterious animals. It was this rationale that led The Billfish Foundation (TBF) to create the Online Tag and Release Database (TROD) as a companion to its existing Tag and Release Program. The TROD was designed to galvanize the sportfishing community and streamline how constituent anglers report data. Significant portions of active TBF members have not …

An Empirical Examination Of The Deca Behavioral Concerns Subscale: Establishing Measurement Invariance Between Language Forms, Veronica A. Fernandez Dec 2014

An Empirical Examination Of The Deca Behavioral Concerns Subscale: Establishing Measurement Invariance Between Language Forms, Veronica A. Fernandez

Open Access Theses

Appropriate assessment instruments are necessary to accurately identify children’s behavior problems and to develop interventions within the classroom. Due to increases in the cultural and linguistic diversity among the early childhood professionals, especially Spanish-speaking teachers, measures are needed in teachers’ dominant language. In response to such a need, the publishers of the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA; LeBuffe & Naglieri, 1999), a widely-used measure of children’s classroom behavior, have developed a Spanish-language form of the measure (DECA-Spanish; LeBuffe & Naglieri, 2001). In the present study, the measurement properties of the Behavioral Concerns subscale of the DECA were examined to confirm …

No Longer Can We Keep Our Eyes Closed To Human Trafficking All Around Us, Richard Lapchick

UCF Forum

You may have read in early December that 61 people were arrested across Florida in a four-day human-trafficking sting operation. If you haven’t followed the dramatic increase in stories about human trafficking in the United States, this news may have caught you by surprise.

Praxis And Insider-Outsider Relationships: The Role Of Non-Indigenous Teachers In Promoting Indigenous Language And Culture In Educational Spaces, Kelly Kealy Dec 2014

Praxis And Insider-Outsider Relationships: The Role Of Non-Indigenous Teachers In Promoting Indigenous Language And Culture In Educational Spaces, Kelly Kealy

Linguistics

In many places throughout Alaska, non-Alaska Native certified teachers are working in communities that foster (or seek to foster) Alaska Native language and culture revitalization in the schools. Often, this means teachers with limited knowledge of the target language need to figure out how to support that content in their classrooms. This qualitative thesis examines interview and field note data collected from five non-Alaska Native teachers (working in Southwest schools) while they took summer classes at an Alaskan university. The teachers shared reflections on their struggles and successes in seeking to facilitate the integration of local Indigenous Knowledges into their …

Alaska Athabascan Stellar Astronomy, Christopher M. Cannon Dec 2014

Alaska Athabascan Stellar Astronomy, Christopher M. Cannon

Arctic and Northern Studies

Stellar astronomy is a fundamental component of Alaska Athabascan cultures that facilitates time-reckoning, navigation, weather forecasting, and cosmology. Evidence from the linguistic record suggests that a group of stars corresponding to the Big Dipper is the only widely attested constellation across the Northern Athabascan languages. However, instruction from expert Athabascan consultants shows that the correlation of these names with the Big Dipper is only partial. In Alaska Gwich'in, Ahtna, and Upper Tanana languages the Big Dipper is identified as one part of a much larger circumpolar humanoid constellation that spans more than 133 degrees across the sky. The Big Dipper …

An Indigenous Vision Of 21st Century Education In The Bering Strait Region, Barbara Qasuglana Amarok Dec 2014

An Indigenous Vision Of 21st Century Education In The Bering Strait Region, Barbara Qasuglana Amarok

Education

I am an Iñupiaq Alaska Native from the Bering Strait region and have worked in the region for 32 years in the fields of elementary, secondary, postsecondary, and adult education. Alaska Native students, as a cohort, have consistently had higher drop out rates and lower percentages of proficiency than other cohorts. My work represents a synthesis of my personal and professional experiences and is similar to research methodologies such as triangulation, auto-ethnography, mixed methods, or various Indigenous research methodologies that focus on webs of relationship. I also interviewed a sample of community members ranging in age from 15 to 75 …

Connecting Places: Writing About And With Portal, Victoria L. Avery Dec 2014

Connecting Places: Writing About And With Portal, Victoria L. Avery

English

Shannon Carter's pedagogy of rhetorical dexterity involves students using a familiar literacy at a meta-level to make sense out of an unfamiliar one. I used her pedagogy, as well as insights from James Paul Gee and John Dewey, in designing a 213x course on writing technologies. The writing prompt for the second unit asked students to write about their inquiry into the game space and reflect on how their experiences met up with research about video games in American society in general. The unit was sequenced with the intention that students would look at their own familiar literacies, understand them …

Hirsh, Sun Jin Kim, Robert Majeska, Mitchell B. Schaffler, John A. Hardin, David C. Spray, Mary B. Goldring, Neil J. Cobelli, Hui B. Sun

Publications and Research

Introduction Epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG), a polyphenol present in green tea, was shown to exert chondroprotective effects in vitro. In this study, we used a posttraumatic osteoarthritis (OA) mouse model to test whether EGCG could slow the progression of OA and relieve OA-associated pain. Methods C57BL/6 mice were subjected to surgical destabilization of the medial meniscus (DMM) or sham surgery. EGCG (25 mg/kg) or vehicle control was administered daily for 4 or 8 weeks by intraperitoneal injection starting on the day of surgery. OA severity was evaluated using Safranin O staining and Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) scores, as well as …

Effect Of Temperature On The Phenology Of Chilo Partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera, Crambidae); Simulation And Visualization Of The Potential Future Distribution Of C. All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Maize (Zea mays) is a major staple food in Africa. However, maize production is severely reduced by damage caused by feeding lepidopteran pests. In East and Southern Africa, Chilo partellus is one of the most damaging cereal stem borers mainly found in the warmer lowland areas. In this study, it was hypothesized that the future distribution and abundance of C. partellus may be affected greatly by the current global warming. The temperature-dependent population growth potential of C. partellus was studied on artificial diet under laboratory conditions at six constant temperatures (15, 18, 20, 25, 28, 30, 32 and 35 °C), …

Molar Size And Shape In The Estimation Of Biological Affinity: A Comparison Of Relative Cusp Locations Using Geometric Morphometrics And Interlandmark Distances, Michael W. Kenyhercz

Anthropology

The study of teeth has been a central tenet in biological anthropology since the inception of the field. Teeth have been previously shown to have a high genetic component. The high heritability of teeth has allowed researchers to use them to answer a myriad of anthropological questions ranging from human origins to modern variation due to microevolution. Traditionally, teeth have been studied either morphologically, through the assignment of nonmetric character states, or metrically, through mesiodistal and buccolingual crown measures. Increasingly, geometric morphometric techniques are being used to answer anthropological questions, especially dentally. However, regardless of analytical technique utilized, the biological …
