Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson May 2014

Understanding Ultimate Use Data And Its Implication For Digital Library Management: A Case Study, Michele Reilly, Santi Thompson

Library Scholarship

Information professionals and librarians have been studying, discussing, and developing digital libraries for over two decades, but understanding ultimate use of images from digital libraries remains a mystery for many of them. Most articles written on digital library use focus on users’ search retrieval needs and behavior. Few mention how digital library patrons use the images they request. Like many digital libraries, archives, and special collections, the University of Houston Digital Library makes high resolution images available to their patrons. Image delivery is achieved by an automated system, titled the Digital Cart Service. An unexpected benefit of the Digital Cart …

Everybody Has The Be Someplace: Twentieth-Centure Pedagogies Of Place And Curricular Possibilities For The Intermountain West, Jacob Sheetz-Willard May 2014

Everybody Has The Be Someplace: Twentieth-Centure Pedagogies Of Place And Curricular Possibilities For The Intermountain West, Jacob Sheetz-Willard

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

In 1977, riding a wave of environmental enthusiasm that had crested in the United States over the course of the previous decade, Wendell Berry published his classic agricultural jeremiad, The Unsettling of America. Berry, a novelist, poet, essayist, and farmer decried the environmental and cultural consequences of the large-scale, commercial agriculture that had overtaken the American landscape in the postwar years. He characterized the shift away from a producerist economy of independent farmers to a society oriented around consumption and growth as a Faustian bargain, an agricultural “colonialism” that devalued the individual and ravaged the land in the name of …

Is ‘How’M I Doin’?’ A Universal Question? Unpackaging Cultural Differences In Feedback Seeking, Rana Gaby Moukarzel May 2014

Is ‘How’M I Doin’?’ A Universal Question? Unpackaging Cultural Differences In Feedback Seeking, Rana Gaby Moukarzel

Theses and Dissertations

The feedback literature is based on the premise that given a favorable context and a drive to reduce uncertainties, all individuals should seek self-relevant performance information. However, this framework has only been empirically examined using Western samples and has failed to consider the influence of the broader context, with the exclusion of Sully de Luque and Sommer’s (2000) cultural framework. The purpose of this project was to integrate extant culture theory into the feedback seeking literature for a more comprehensive framework, and a more global understanding of cultural contingencies surrounding the feedback seeking process. Findings revealed the universality of feedback …

The Effect Of Student Conduct Practices On Student Development In Christian Higher Education, Mark Hyde May 2014

The Effect Of Student Conduct Practices On Student Development In Christian Higher Education, Mark Hyde

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Student development professionals seek to address student behavior in a manner that facilitates whole student development and whole community development. Traditional student conduct models focus on addressing the behavior of the offending student through punitive sanctions. Restorative justice focuses on repairing the harm caused to the community and how the offender can restore trust. This study asks the question what student conduct practice produces greater student development outcomes at a Christian institute of higher education. This study used static group comparison to identify if there are statistically significant differences in student development outcomes generated by student conduct practices at a …

The literacy lessons infused with pop culture characters, references, and style were aimed to inspire students and engage students in a love of literature while also improving their overall literacy. The study involved six students in the third grade with a wide range of readiness levels. The research question, “Does popular culture infused literacy lessons enhance the literacy achievement of one group of third-grade students?” was investigated. It was intended that involvement in the after-school Pop Literacy Club (PLC) …

Reel Queer: Emergent Discourses And Contexts Of Queer Youth Identity Constructions And Experiences In Digital Video Projects, Sarah Lindsey Beck May 2014

Reel Queer: Emergent Discourses And Contexts Of Queer Youth Identity Constructions And Experiences In Digital Video Projects, Sarah Lindsey Beck

Communication ETDs

My thesis examines the discourses present in digital video projects created by queer youth, ages 13-20, who participated in The Reel Queer Youth video mentorship program between 2009 and 2012. I used textual analysis, specifically discourse and critical technocultural discourse analysis to explore constructions of identity in youth and experiences present in digital video projects and the contexts these discourses were produced within. I identified three overarching discursive themes: (a) call for more complex understandings of queer youth identities and experiences; (b) concern regarding gender binaries; and (c) change and self-responsibility. In addition to the discursive themes, I identified and …

Nutrient Utilization, Lactational Performance, And Profitability Of Dairy Cows By Feeding Protein Supplements In High-Forage Lactation Diets, Kathryn Neal May 2014

Nutrient Utilization, Lactational Performance, And Profitability Of Dairy Cows By Feeding Protein Supplements In High-Forage Lactation Diets, Kathryn Neal

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Due to the increasing cost of soybean meal and concerns of excess N being excreted into the environment, new protein supplements have been developed. Two products that have shown potential in increasing N utilization efficiency are slow release urea (SRU; Optigen) and ruminal escape protein derived from yeast (YMP; DEMP). The objective of this study was to assess the effects of feeding these 2 supplements in high-forage [(54% of total dietary dry matter (DM)] dairy diets on nutrient utilization, feed efficiency, lactational performance of dairy cows, and their impacts on income-over feed costs. Twelve …

In this paper we discuss the experience of caregiving for children living with HIV in a resource poor environment in Gulu municipality in northern Uganda; the main research questions of the study were: what are the perceptions of caregivers on the care of children with HIV, and what barriers and enablers exist that undermine or promote better care for children respectively? The experience of caregivers and their perceptions on managing HIV in children is believed to shape the health seeking behaviour towards treatment and efforts to cope with its negative impact on the body. Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield Apr 2014

Youth Culture And Islam In Indonesia, Pam Nilan, Michelle Mansfield

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Indonesian youth culture is sometimes depicted through a moral panic discourse about mixed sex socializing. In this article, the authors challenge that view by presenting some ethnographic material on young Muslim Indonesians of both sexes socialising in an internet caf and gathering during Ramadhan in a mall in Solo, Central Java. Young Indonesians enact everyday youth culture through the negotiation of space, time, and technology within the strong discourse of moral propriety and gender separation advised by contemporary Islam. The intense social bonding between same sex age peers provides security and reassurance for young men and women in the transition …

Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani Apr 2014

Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this article, I analyse the covers of Gadis, a magazine for Indonesian teenage girls, from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, I examine these magazine covers as manifestations of local gender ideology amidst pressures from a globalized market. The models on the magazine covers are the embodiment of ideal teenagers and they reflect the magazine's personification of Indonesian adolescents. Images of the models in conjunction with the article titles displayed on the covers construct dominant themes surrounding the lives of female adolescents. In this article, I argue that the dominant gender ideology is perpetuated by the magazine; however, the …

Growing Children: The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Child Growth And Development., Ernesto Ruiz Apr 2014

Growing Children: The Relationship Between Food Insecurity And Child Growth And Development., Ernesto Ruiz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examined the relationship between food security status and cultural congruence and indicators of child growth and development in a rural mountain town in Costa Rica. Results show that children from food secure households are significantly shorter and shorter-legged than their food insecure counterparts. It is theorized that these findings correspond to low quality diets associated with increasing commodification of food systems in rural Costa Rica. Identity-based mechanisms are discussed as potential factors contributing to the increasing commodification of life through the encroachment of the global market economy.

Racial And Ethnic Diversity In Grounded Theory Research, Claire Burke Draucker, Halima Al-Khattab, Dana D. Hines, Jill Mazurczyk, Anne C. Russell, Pam Shockey Stephenson, Shannon Draucker Apr 2014

Racial And Ethnic Diversity In Grounded Theory Research, Claire Burke Draucker, Halima Al-Khattab, Dana D. Hines, Jill Mazurczyk, Anne C. Russell, Pam Shockey Stephenson, Shannon Draucker

The Qualitative Report

National initiatives in the United States call for health research that addresses racial/ethnic disparities. Although grounded theory (GT) research has the potential to contribute much to the understanding of the health experiences of people of color, the extent to which it has contributed to health disparities research is unclear. In this article we describe a project in which we reviewed 44 GT studies published in Qualitative Health Research within the last five years. Using a framework proposed by Green, Creswell, Shope, and Clark (2007), we categorized the studies at one of four levels based on the status and significance afforded …

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: The Construction Of Othering In Edward Bliss Emerson's Caribbean Journal Of 1831-1832, Alma Simounet Apr 2014

The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly: The Construction Of Othering In Edward Bliss Emerson's Caribbean Journal Of 1831-1832, Alma Simounet

The Qualitative Report

This paper examines the vocabulary, grammar structures and rhetorical devices that appear in Edward Emerson’s journal based on his trip to the Caribbean. The end-in-view is to identify the devices that Emerson utilized, mostly unconsciously, in his depiction and construction of others; in the case of this journal, of the peoples he encountered in the Caribbean. The methodological approach of critical discourse analysis guides this examination.

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova Apr 2014

Tapestry Of Space: Domestic Architecture And Underground Communities In Margaret Morton’S Photography Of A Forgotten New York, Irina Nersessova

disClosure: A Journal of Social Theory

This article addresses the impact urban space has on individuals through the use of Situationist International theory and psychogeography. Representations of homelessness in New York in Margaret Morton's photography are used to demonstrate the interconnectedness among space, people, and social issues. Social issues manifest themselves in urban decay, and the inhabitants react to this phenomenon emotionally and artistically. Some inhabitants demonstrate their relationship with space by responding with material production of housing and art, which they accomplish by building without exploiting the environment the way the manufacturing of commodities often does.

Gender As Cultural Production: The Cultural Critique In Contemporary Western Marxist Feminism, Rui Ma Apr 2014

Gender As Cultural Production: The Cultural Critique In Contemporary Western Marxist Feminism, Rui Ma

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

The uncovering of the sociality of gender and the reshaping of the consciousness of women are fundamental cultural appeals of feminism, and these appeals may rely on theoretical support from both classical Marxist dialectical analysis of the relationship between society and consciousness and Western Marxist illuminations of the subjectivity and cultural materialism, although the latter may take on more weight for feminist criticism. Since 1970s, Marxist feminism has absorbed the theory of cultural production, developed on Althusser's theory of ideology and British cultural studies, in its analysis of patriarchy, capitalism and gender system, and gender is thus disclosed as the …

Turbulent Bodies: Disruptive Materiality In American Painting, 1880-1940, Matthew Karl Bailey Apr 2014

Turbulent Bodies: Disruptive Materiality In American Painting, 1880-1940, Matthew Karl Bailey

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This study historicizes the physical processes of painting of the American artists Winslow Homer (1836-1910), Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917), and John Marin (1870-1953). It situates their practices in the context of late-nineteenth and twentieth-century American culture by thinking of painting as a phenomenal experience shaped by beliefs and attitudes towards the material world and the function of painting. More specifically, this study examines what I identify as these artists' struggles, in selected paintings, with the viscous and voluptuous nature of oil painting as a process rooted in the visceral world of the body and base materials. In these works, the …

Kundiman: A Musical And Socio-Cultural Exploration On The Development Of The Philippine Art Song, Michelle Cacho Nicolasora

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This paper is a historical research on the development of the Philippine art song, the kundiman. Originating as an oral tradition in a form of a love song, the kundiman became strongly associated with the Philippine revolution, and with nationalism thereafter. This paper puts the kundiman in a center of an exploration--on the social milieu, and on its dual roles as a converging point of foreign influences and as a conduit of nationalism. The period of the kundiman, generally placed from 1800-1930, is divided into three periods demarcated by significant historical events, as the kundiman seems to develop alongside Philippine …
