A Functional Approach To Schwartz's Cultural Dimensions: Persuasive Appeals Corresponding To Individual Cultural Values, Chichang Xiong Jan 2014

A Functional Approach To Schwartz's Cultural Dimensions: Persuasive Appeals Corresponding To Individual Cultural Values, Chichang Xiong

ETD Archive

The goal of this study is to add to the literature of advertising as well as consumer psychology, specifically testing whether people's attitude towards online advertising would depend on how much the advertising resonated with their individual cultural values. Hereby, Schwartz's cultural dimensions were adopted, namely Hierarchy, Egalitarianism, Embeddedness, Intellectual Autonomy and Affective Autonomy. Past research has suggested that when advertising contained the same value a person stresses, that person would have more favorable attitudes towards the ad. More relevantly, research has demonstrated that if an advertisement was more relevant with a person's individual cultural values (Torelli et al., 2009), …

Indian Play, Lisa K. Neuman Jan 2014

Indian Play, Lisa K. Neuman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

When Indian University—now Bacone College—opened its doors in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) in 1880, it was a small Baptist institution designed to train young Native Americans to be teachers and Christian missionaries among their own people and to act as agents of cultural assimilation. From 1927 to 1957, however, Bacone College changed course and pursued a new strategy of emphasizing the Indian identities of its students and projecting often-romanticized images of Indianness to the non-Indian public in its fund-raising campaigns. Money was funneled back into the school as administrators hired Native American faculty who in turn created innovative curricular programs …

The Pedagogical Imagination, Leon Sachs Jan 2014

The Pedagogical Imagination, Leon Sachs

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

French school debates of recent years, which are simultaneously debates about the French Republic’s identity and values, have generated a spate of internationally successful literature and film on the topic of education. While mainstream media and scholarly essays tend to treat these works as faithful representations of classroom reality, The Pedagogical Imagination takes a different approach. In this study of French education and republicanism as represented in twenty-first-century French literature and film, Leon Sachs shifts our attention from “what” literature and film say about education to “how” they say it. He argues that the most important literary and filmic treatments …

Film And Everyday Eco-Disasters, Robin L. Murray, Joseph K. Heumann Jan 2014

Film And Everyday Eco-Disasters, Robin L. Murray, Joseph K. Heumann

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Eco-disasters such as coal-mining accidents, oil spills, and food-borne diseases appear regularly in the news, making them seem nearly commonplace. These ecological crises highlight the continual tensions between human needs and the environmental impact these needs produce. Contemporary documentaries and feature films explore environmental-human conflicts by depicting the consequences of our overconsumption and dependence on nonrenewable energy.

Film and Everyday Eco-disasters examines changing perspectives toward everyday eco-disasters as reflected in the work of filmmakers from the silent era forward, with an emphasis on recent films such as Dead Ahead, an HBO dramatization of the Exxon Valdez disaster; Total Recall …

Colonial Mediascapes, Jeffrey Glover, Matt Cohen Jan 2014

Colonial Mediascapes, Jeffrey Glover, Matt Cohen

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In colonial North and South America, print was only one way of communicating. Information in various forms flowed across the boundaries between indigenous groups and early imperial settlements. Natives and newcomers made speeches, exchanged gifts, invented gestures, and inscribed their intentions on paper, bark, skins, and many other kinds of surfaces. No one method of conveying meaning was privileged, and written texts often relied on nonwritten modes of communication. Colonial Mediascapes examines how textual and nontextual literatures interacted in colonial North and South America. Extending the textual foundations of early American literary history, the editors bring a wide range of …

Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman Jan 2014

Native Diasporas, Gregory D. Smithers, Brooke N. Newman

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

The arrival of European settlers in the Americas disrupted indigenous lifeways, and the effects of colonialism shattered Native communities. Forced migration and human trafficking created a diaspora of cultures, languages, and people. Gregory D. Smithers and Brooke N. Newman have gathered the work of leading scholars, including Bill Anthes, Duane Champagne, Daniel Cobb, Donald Fixico, and Joy Porter, among others, in examining an expansive range of Native peoples and the extent of their influences through reaggregation. These diverse and wide-ranging essays uncover indigenous understandings of self-identification, community, and culture through the speeches, cultural products, intimate relations, and political and legal …

Integrins Promote Cytokinesis Through The Rsk Signaling Axis, Shomita S. Mathew, Bethsaida Nieves, Sharon Sequeira, Savitha Sambandamoorthy, Kevin Pumiglia, Melinda Larsen, Susan E. Laflamme Jan 2014

Integrins Promote Cytokinesis Through The Rsk Signaling Axis, Shomita S. Mathew, Bethsaida Nieves, Sharon Sequeira, Savitha Sambandamoorthy, Kevin Pumiglia, Melinda Larsen, Susan E. Laflamme

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Cytokinesis is the final stage in cell division. Although integrins can regulate cytokinesis, the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. In this study, we demonstrate that integrin-regulated ERK (extracellular signal-related kinase) and RSK (p90 ribosomal S6 kinase) signaling promotes successful cytokinesis. Inhibiting the activation of ERK and RSK in CHO cells by a mutation in the integrin b1 cytoplasmic tail or with pharmacological inhibitors results in the accumulation of cells with midbodies and the formation of binucleated cells. Activation of ERK and RSK signaling by the expression of constitutively active RAF1 suppresses the mutant phenotype in a RSK-dependent manner. Constitutively …

Subjugated Bodies, Normalized Subjects: Representations Of Power In The Panamanian Literature Of Roberto Díaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia And Mauro Zúñiga Araúz, Sara Escobar-Wiercinski

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation examines the dissemination of power represented in the works of Panamanian writers Roberto Díaz Herrera, Rose Marie Tapia and Mauro Zúñiga Araúz. My work focuses on two important periods in Panama's history: the repressive dictatorial era of Manuel Noriega and the post-dictatorial era during which subjugation and power operate in subtle ways, through institutions, mechanisms of civil society, and globalization. The primary sources are Díaz Herrera's testimony, and the novels of Tapia and Zúñiga Araúz. In my analysis, I draw upon the notions of power, subjugation and normalization developed by the French philosoher Michel Foucault. I also draw …

A Cross-Sectional Study Of The Relations Between Parental Factors And Academic Achievement In High School Adolescents, Patricia Marie Lanzon Jan 2014

A Cross-Sectional Study Of The Relations Between Parental Factors And Academic Achievement In High School Adolescents, Patricia Marie Lanzon

Wayne State University Dissertations

Bronfenbrenner's (1979) ecological model was used as the theoretical model for this study of parental achievement factors that influence adolescent academic achievement. Many predictors are related to a child's potential for academic achievement. Of the most proximal are parental and family factors, which were the focus in this study. The proximal parental and family factors for this study were as follows: family structure, maternal and paternal parenting styles and parental involvement, parents' school and community involvement, parental attitude toward achievement, and free and reduced lunch status. Achievement as determined by the student's actual grade point average was the dependent variable. …

Reforming American Higher Education: The University Of Rhode Island International Engineering Program, John M. Grandin, Sigrid Berka

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures Faculty Publications

The goal of this paper is to explore how American higher education may be better adapted to the needs of today’s global society by means of a more integrated curriculum, one that rigorously partners the “hard skills” of math, the sciences, and engineering (the STEM and professional disciplines) with those supposedly “softer” ones derived through the arts and humanities. The authors believe that students will be better prepared for the challenges of the contemporary workplace through an education equally grounded in the sciences and the arts, including the study of varied sets of value systems, by pursuing dual degrees across …

City Magazine Editors And The Evolving Urban Information Environment, Susan Currie Sivek Jan 2014

City Magazine Editors And The Evolving Urban Information Environment, Susan Currie Sivek

Faculty Publications

The urban information environment in which city magazines operate is changing dramatically, with the decline of local newspapers and the growth of user-generated local content. City magazine editors are re-envisioning their purpose as local information providers. This study provides a qualitative analysis of in-depth interviews with senior editors at 15 award-winning city magazines. The editors’ responses speak to the changing role of their publications today; the function of new technologies in informing local communities; and the public service that local journalism organizations offer in a constrained economic situation.

Political Magazines On Twitter During Election 2012: Framing, Uniting, Dividing, Susan Currie Sivek Jan 2014

Political Magazines On Twitter During Election 2012: Framing, Uniting, Dividing, Susan Currie Sivek

Faculty Publications

This study offers a content analysis of Twitter activity from 16 American political opinion magazines during the month before the 2012 presidential election. The study is an exploratory attempt to operationalize aspects of tweets that may contribute to frame alignment processes and mobilization among Twitter users. The analysis identifies these components and examines how political magazines’ Twitter activity may demonstrate aspects of this process. These magazines must consider both the normative goal of achieving specific political gains by mobilizing readers and the pragmatic goal of remaining sustainable as publishing enterprises. The degree to which their Twitter usage reflects frame alignment …

Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger Jan 2014

Attempting An Affirmative Approach To American Broadcasting: Ideology, Politics, And The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program, Michael W. Huntsberger

Faculty Publications

The Public Telecommunications Facilities Program (PTFP) was the largest source of capital funding for U.S. public broadcasters for nearly fifty years. Between 1963 and 2010, the PTFP distributed more than $800 million to support the construction of public broadcasting facilities. Though the PTFP itself was generally noncontroversial, the fortunes of the program were complicated by the partisan politics of public broadcasting and federal fiscal policy. This study provides evidence of the ambiguous and contingent nature of the American approach to public broadcasting, and demonstrates some of the problems associated with affirmative efforts by government to advance public communication.

Translation And Tourism: A Cross Cultural Communication And The Art Of Translating Menus, Amin Amirdabbaghian Jan 2014

Translation And Tourism: A Cross Cultural Communication And The Art Of Translating Menus, Amin Amirdabbaghian

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Economic globalization has brought Iran into closer contact with the rest of the world. Iranian food, as an important part of Iranian culture, attracts foreigners who come to Iran. But in a lot of cases, when they look at to the menus, they feel stunned and baffled. For the English translations of Iranian menus are often incomprehensible and misleading. However, such awareness has not led to an in-depth study on menu translation. This paper draws on theories of foreignization and domestication, and recommends foreignization as a main strategy and domestication as a supplementary choice. Domestication strategy offers a technique that …

Listening For Policy Change: How The Voices Of Disabled People Shaped Australia’S National Disability Insurance Scheme, Cate Thill Jan 2014

Listening For Policy Change: How The Voices Of Disabled People Shaped Australia’S National Disability Insurance Scheme, Cate Thill

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Voice has become an important yet ambivalent tool for the recognition of disability. The transformative potential of voice is dependent on a political commitment to listening to disabled people. To focus on listening redirects accountability for social change from disabled people to the ableist norms, institutions and practices that structure which voices can be heard in policy debates. In this paper, I use disability theory on voice and political theory on listening to examine policy documents for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in light of claims made by the disability movement. Although my study finds some evidence of openness in …

Knowledge Sharing And Social Media: Altruism, Perceived Online Attachment Motivation, And Perceived Online Relationship Commitment, Will W.K. Ma, Albert Chan Jan 2014

Knowledge Sharing And Social Media: Altruism, Perceived Online Attachment Motivation, And Perceived Online Relationship Commitment, Will W.K. Ma, Albert Chan

Support & Other Units (THEi)

Social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, have become extremely popular. Facebook, for example, has more than a billion registered users and thousands of millions of units of information are shared every day, including short phrases, articles, photos, and audio and video clips. However, only a tiny proportion of these sharing units trigger any type of knowledge exchange that is ultimately beneficial to the users. This study draws on the theory of belonging and the intrinsic motivation of altruism to explore the factors contributing to knowledge sharing behavior. Using a survey of 299 high school students applying for university after …

Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet Jan 2014

Exploring Hegemonic Perspectives Of Midwestern Yard-Spaces Through Art Education, Nan Waterstreet

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated yard-spaces as artistic sites that are created and maintained through design processes involving aesthetic choices. The field of art education has grown to consider everyday objects and places worthy of exploration as important signifiers of cultural views, values, and expectations. Yard-spaces, as everyday places, are often taken for granted, and aesthetic choices that conform to social norms often have detrimental effects on the environment. This study investigated conformist and non-conformist aesthetic choices, the environmental effects of these choices, and the influences affecting design and maintenance choices for yard-space appearances.||A gap in knowledge was discovered for recognizing socially …

Influence Of Popular Television Programming On Students’ Perception About Course Selection, Major, And Career, Kristy Tucciarone

Faculty Scholarship

This study explores the ways in which television programming influences undergraduate students’ perceptions of careers in advertising and related fields. Drawing on cultivation theory, the research examines how repeated exposure to television portrayals of professional life can shape expectations and decision-making about college majors and career paths. The analysis focuses on two series—Mad Men and Trust Me—which depict advertising professionals in contrasting but influential ways.

Using a focus group methodology, the study engaged undergraduate students enrolled in advertising and communication-related courses. Participants were asked to discuss their viewing experiences, perceptions of advertising careers as presented on television, and …

Loud: Critical Practice Of Film, Sounds, And Environmental Conservation, Liat Krongrad Jan 2014

Loud: Critical Practice Of Film, Sounds, And Environmental Conservation, Liat Krongrad

Theses & ETDs

This paper places my short, fictional, character-driven, thesis film Loud in environmental and cultural context. Loud observes the ways in which information and industry technologies such as cars, trains, refrigerators, radios, televisions, computers, and cell phones transform subjectivity. The nonlinear meta-narrative, the images, the sounds, and the editing techniques are all infused with metaphor and symbolism. Loud communicates environmental issues in a visceral, profoundly emotional manner. This paper discusses the environmental issues at hand -- whale strikes and noise pollution. Then, it goes on to discuss several filmmakers and musicians who have inspired the content and techniques used for the …

“Like Having A Muse In The Room With You”: The Exchanges Of The New York School, Jared O'Connor Jan 2014

“Like Having A Muse In The Room With You”: The Exchanges Of The New York School, Jared O'Connor

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationship between the poets and painters of the New York School through the lens of intertextuality and exchange. Their shared space along with their close friendships engenders an intimate exchange of aesthetic sensibilities. John Ashbery, Frank O’Hara, and Joe Brainard, three writers of the New York School, are paired with their visual contemporaries to demonstrate how exchange and intertextuality operates within their diverse body of work. This school of artists marks a drastic change in American artistic culture. And through their endless exchanges, the New York School challenges the ways in which we view and read …

Anselm Kiefer’S Meditations On Melencolia, Gracie Loesser Jan 2014

Anselm Kiefer’S Meditations On Melencolia, Gracie Loesser

Theses & ETDs

This thesis focuses on the work of the contemporary German artist Anselm Kiefer. Specifically, I trace the presence of a specific object, an eight-sided polyhedron, throughout Kiefer’s artwork beginning in the 1980s. Rather than finding a conclusion to the answer of what exactly the polyhedron signifies in the artist’s work, I investigate the way in which the presence of the polyhedron creates a dialogue regarding the positive and negative characteristics of artistic creation, a topic critically important to Kiefer as a German artist working in a post-Holocaust landscape. I focus on how the polyhedron’s resistance to a singular interpretation is …

Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne Jan 2014

Walt’S Exceptional Empire: Fordism, Hegemony, And Spectacle At Disney, Thayer Z. Warne

Theses & ETDs

By addressing the legacy of Walt Disney and examining his corporation’s role in the world today, this thesis locates The Walt Disney Company within the narrative of American exceptionalism. Using a variety of both primary and secondary sources as part of its analysis—and dedicating significant attention to the Disney parks’ spatial layout— this thesis evaluates the connection between Disney’s own rendering of exceptionalism and its position as a multinational corporation that operates in a consumption-driven society. In doing so, this thesis touches upon the development of Disney in a post-Fordist economy, focusing on the company’s use of spectacle to promote …
