The Return On Investment For Undergraduate Degrees In Hospitality And Tourism Management, Asli D. Tasci, Abraham Pizam, Robertico Croes, Po-Ju Chen Dec 2014

The Return On Investment For Undergraduate Degrees In Hospitality And Tourism Management, Asli D. Tasci, Abraham Pizam, Robertico Croes, Po-Ju Chen

Rosen Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Increasing concerns regarding the value of higher education in the USA have motivated several organizations to calculate the return on investment (ROI) for college education by employing diverse methodologies. This study evaluates these methodologies by using data from a survey of alumni of Rosen College of Hospitality Management at the University of Central Florida. The results reveal that the highly publicized low ROI for college education might be inaccurate, confusing and misleading for several reasons, among which is the assumption of zero income while studying, causing debt to be the total of a student’s expenses. Data reveal that Rosen College …

Mapping Thunder Sources By Inverting Acoustic And Electromagnetic Observations, J. F. Anderson, J. B. Johnson, R. O. Arechiga, R. J. Thomas

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present a new method of locating current flow in lightning strikes by inversion of thunder recordings constrained by Lightning Mapping Array observations. First, radio frequency (RF) pulses are connected to reconstruct conductive channels created by leaders. Then, acoustic signals that would be produced by current flow through each channel are forward modeled. The recorded thunder is considered to consist of a weighted superposition of these acoustic signals. We calculate the posterior distribution of acoustic source energy for each channel with a Markov Chain Monte Carlo inversion that fits power envelopes of modeled and recorded thunder; these results show which …

A Description Of Tolerance To Apical Meristem Damage In Wild Populations Of Arabidopsis Thaliana And Its Genetic Basis, Justin Dalrymple Dec 2014

A Description Of Tolerance To Apical Meristem Damage In Wild Populations Of Arabidopsis Thaliana And Its Genetic Basis, Justin Dalrymple

Biology Theses

Since plants cannot actively avoid herbivory, they rely on two primary strategies to maintain their fitness in the face of herbivore pressure: resistance—the deterrence of herbivory via physical and chemical means—and tolerance—recuperation of aboveground mass after herbivory. Although diverse groups have been shown to be tolerant to herbivory, mechanisms of tolerance are not yet well known. There is also very little known about the ecological relevance of tolerance strategies in wild populations. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the apical meristem suppresses growth of axillary meristems to a high degree under normal conditions, but a number of axillary meristemswill grow after apical meristem …

District Within A District: De Facto Segregation And White Flight Into And Out Of The School District Of University City (1967-1991), Carlos Javier Diaz-Granados

Dissertations

This auto-ethnographic study explores the impetus behind racial transition in the school district of University City between 1967 and 1991. Factors contributing to the exodus of White families and the influx of Black families are examined through a lens of Critical Race Theory. Exclusively White through the mid 1960’s, The School District of University City was nearly 80% Black by the mid 1980’s. A great deal of this transition was related directly to neighborhood patterns occurring in and around the community. Extensive research for this study utilized the oral histories of former students, parents, staff members, board members, and community …

An Empirical Investigation Of Factors Influencing It Professionals’ Knowledge Sharing Behavior In Organizations, Prasad Shambulinga Rudramuniyaiah

Dissertations

Knowledge management is important for competitive advantage in knowledge-based organizations. A critical aspect of managing knowledge is the knowledge sharing behavior of organizational members. A positive relationship between knowledge sharing and organizational performance has been widely supported in prior literature. The vast body of extant literature on knowledge sharing behavior has identified that individuals possess specialized knowledge which can be valuable to the organization, specifically when it is shared. Knowledge sharing behavior however is influenced by several factors which either facilitate or inhibit knowledge sharing among individuals in an organizational context. A better understanding and management of these factors would …

Impact Of The Serotonin Transporter Polymorphism On Emotion Identification In Healthy Older Adults, Staci Erin Scott Dec 2014

Impact Of The Serotonin Transporter Polymorphism On Emotion Identification In Healthy Older Adults, Staci Erin Scott

Dissertations

Older adults exhibit reduced accuracy and efficiency for identifying facial emotion expressions yet it is unclear how genetic or cognitive variables influence these findings. This study examined the impact of serotonin transporter polymorphism 5-HTTLPR on patterns of explicit emotion identification accuracy and reaction time (RT) in healthy older adults. The impact of 5-HTTLPR on measures of processing speed, attention, and executive function as well as correlations between cognitive measures and emotion identification measures were also examined. Methods: Forty-one individuals over the age of 50 were genotyped for bi-allelic and tri-allelic variants of 5-HTTLPR and administered an emotion recognition paradigm and …

Schisms In Schooling: Domains Of Power As Seen From Our Students, Kristen Michelle Taylor Dec 2014

Schisms In Schooling: Domains Of Power As Seen From Our Students, Kristen Michelle Taylor

Dissertations

This study investigated the dynamics of power available to students who are assigned to participate in small group instruction as an intervention to low academic scores. It proposes that student experiences of the phenomenon of small group instruction are not currently present in the research literature concerning low student performance in public education, and therefore the research literature is incomplete. A case study was conducted at a public school in St. Louis, Missouri, which resulted in a case of two teachers and five students recruited to participate. Through document analysis, classroom observations, and participant interviews, the participants provided data from …

Contributions Of Unique Active Site Residues Of Eukaryotic Udp-Galactopyranose Mutases To Substrate Recognition And Active Site Dynamics, Isabel Da Fonseca, Insaf A. Qureshi, Ritcha Mehra-Chaudhary, Karina Kizjakina, John J. Tanner, Pablo Sobrado

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

UDP-glucopyranose mutase (UGM) catalyzes the interconversion between UDP-galactopyranose and UDP-galactofuranose. Absent in humans, galactofuranose is found in bacterial and fungal cell walls and is a cell surface virulence factor in protozoan parasites. For these reasons, UGMs are targets for drug discovery. Here, we report a mutagenesis and structural study of the UGMs from Aspergillus fumigatus and Trypanosoma cruzi focused on active site residues that are conserved in eukaryotic UGMs but are absent or different in bacterial UGMs. Kinetic analysis of the variants F66A, Y104A, Q107A, N207A, and Y317A (A. fumigatus numbering) show decreases in kcat/KM values of 200-1000-fold for the …

Evidence For (And Against) Progenitor Bias In The Size Growth Of Compact Red Galaxies, Stephanie K. Keating, Roberto G. Abraham, Ricardo Schiavon, Genevieve Graves, Ivana Damjanov, Renbin Yan, Jeffrey Newman, Luc Simard Dec 2014

Evidence For (And Against) Progenitor Bias In The Size Growth Of Compact Red Galaxies, Stephanie K. Keating, Roberto G. Abraham, Ricardo Schiavon, Genevieve Graves, Ivana Damjanov, Renbin Yan, Jeffrey Newman, Luc Simard

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Most massive, passive galaxies are compact at high redshifts, but similarly compact massive galaxies are rare in the local universe. The most common interpretation of this phenomenon is that massive galaxies have grown in size by a factor of about five since redshift z = 2. An alternative explanation is that recently quenched massive galaxies are larger (a "progenitor bias"). In this paper, we explore the importance of progenitor bias by looking for systematic differences in the stellar populations of compact early-type galaxies in the DEEP2 survey as a function of size. Our analysis is based on applying the statistical …

The Nax Language: Unifying Functional Programming And Logical Reasoning In A Language Based On Mendler-Style Recursion Schemes And Term-Indexed Types, Ki Yung Ahn Dec 2014

The Nax Language: Unifying Functional Programming And Logical Reasoning In A Language Based On Mendler-Style Recursion Schemes And Term-Indexed Types, Ki Yung Ahn

Dissertations and Theses

Two major applications of lambda calculi in computer science are functional programming languages and mechanized reasoning systems (or, proof assistants). According to the Curry--Howard correspondence, it is possible, in principle, to design a unified language based on a typed lambda calculus for both logical reasoning and programming. However, the different requirements of programming languages and reasoning systems make it difficult to design such a unified language that provides both. Programming languages usually extend lambda calculi with programming-friendly features (e.g., recursive datatypes, general recursion) for supporting the flexibility to model various computations, while sacrificing logical consistency. Logical reasoning systems usually extend …

The Effect Of Ph And Counterion On The Size Distribution And Luminescence Lifetime Of Terbium-Doped Lanthanum Nanocrystals, Sarah Baker

Undergraduate Honors Theses

In recent years, nanoparticles have been applied to and have gained prevalence in fields such as chemistry, biology, the medical sciences, and biotechnology, and have attracted the attention of medical researchers as potential microscopic drug delivery systems in the human body. In particular, nanoparticles made with the lanthanides have shown themselves to be useful to many biological applications due to their unique luminescent properties. It is crucial to determine optimum synthetic parameters so that nanoparticles are both small enough to pass through the kidneys and also have the ability to attach different functional groups so that they may be relevant to …

A Content-Sensitive Wiki Help System, Eswara Satya Pavan Rajesh Pinapala

Master's Projects

Context-sensitive help is a software application component that enables users to open help pertaining to their state, location, or the action they are performing within the software. Context-sensitive “wiki” help, on the other hand, is help powered by a wiki system with all the features of context-sensitive help. A context-sensitive wiki help system aims to make the context-sensitive help collaborative; in addition to seeking help, users can directly contribute to the help system. I have implemented a context-sensitive wiki help system into Yioop, an open source search engine and software portal created by Dr. Chris Pollett, in order to measure …

Systems Biology Investigation Of Camp Modulation To Increase Smn Levels For The Treatment Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Sean G Mack, Daniel J Cook, Prasad Dhurjati, Matthew E R Butchbach Dec 2014

Systems Biology Investigation Of Camp Modulation To Increase Smn Levels For The Treatment Of Spinal Muscular Atrophy., Sean G Mack, Daniel J Cook, Prasad Dhurjati, Matthew E R Butchbach

Department of Pediatrics Faculty Papers

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), a leading genetic cause of infant death worldwide, is an autosomal recessive disorder caused by the loss of SMN1 (survival motor neuron 1), which encodes the protein SMN. The loss of SMN1 causes a deficiency in SMN protein levels leading to motor neuron cell death in the anterior horn of the spinal cord. SMN2, however, can also produce some functional SMN to partially compensate for loss of SMN1 in SMA suggesting increasing transcription of SMN2 as a potential therapy to treat patients with SMA. A cAMP response element was identified on the SMN2 promoter, implicating cAMP …

Professional Learning And Lean Manufacturing, Parker Grant Dec 2014

Professional Learning And Lean Manufacturing, Parker Grant

Doctoral Dissertations

Global competition and a down-sized labor force require manufacturers to use lean manufacturing practices. Current professional development models, however, are suboptimal in guiding efforts of first line supervisors to help workers improve their skills in solving manufacturing problems. This study employed an interpretive qualitative research methodology to explore what supervisors and workers experienced as the key factors that helped workers learn how to use lean manufacturing practices. Eight individuals who worked in an aerospace manufacturing plant located in the northeast United States participated in the study. Six of the participants were first line supervisors and two were first-line workers. Data …
