Evidence Based Falls Management Program In The Nursing Home, Deloris Jacobs
Evidence Based Falls Management Program In The Nursing Home, Deloris Jacobs
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones
The cost of fall injuries for both nursing homes and patients can be staggering. Facilities can incur large financial penalties following notices of severe deficiencies from regulatory agencies and will incur substantial legal fees in the event of a wrongful injury or death lawsuit. Patients injured in falls are at risk of increased financial costs for care in the nursing home as well as a lower quality of life. They are likely to incur co-pay or coinsurance costs for care by physicians and other professional services, and costs for rehabilitative services, out of pocket expenses, medical equipment, prescription drugs, and …

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Background: Individuality in the species composition of the vertebrate gut microbiota is driven by a combination of host and environmental factors that have largely been studied independently. We studied the convergence of these factors in a G10 mouse population generated from a cross between two strains to search for quantitative trait loci (QTLs) that affect gut microbiota composition or ileal Immunoglobulin A (IgA) expression in mice fed normal or high-fat diets.
Results: We found 42 microbiota-specific QTLs in 27 different genomic regions that affect the relative abundances of 39 taxa, including four QTL that were shared between this G …
Infection Rates, Parasitemia Levels, And Genetic Diversity Of Hematozoa In New World Waterfowl, Matthew M. Smith
Infection Rates, Parasitemia Levels, And Genetic Diversity Of Hematozoa In New World Waterfowl, Matthew M. Smith
Biological Sciences
Blood parasites can limit the productivity of birds and increase the vulnerability of isolated and naïve populations to extinction. I examined 804 blood samples collected from 11 species of South American waterfowl to assess infection by Haemoproteus, Plasmodium and/or Leucocytozoon parasites. In addition, I strove to develop a new molecular tool to quickly and accurately determine relative parasitemia rates of Leucocytozoon parasites in avian blood. I used samples collected from waterfowl in interior Alaska (n = 105) to develop and optimize a real-time, quantitative PCR methodology using TaqMan fluorogenic probes. Molecular screening produced an apparent prevalence rate of 3.1% for …
Monitoring Energy And Nitrogen Availability For Arctic Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus), Lindsay L. Vansomeren
Monitoring Energy And Nitrogen Availability For Arctic Caribou (Rangifer Tarandus), Lindsay L. Vansomeren
Biological Sciences
Arctic caribou and reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) are an economically and ecologically important species. Rangifer populations are often affected by nutritional factors. Our ability to monitor nutrient supply to arctic ungulates is presently limited by a lack of techniques to consistently and easily measure availability of specific nutrients and which may disproportionately affect different segments of Rangifer populations. I refined and validated a method to measure availability of specific nutrients including nitrogen (N) and energy to caribou using purified fibrolytic enzymes and acid/pepsin to simulate digestion. I then used this method to measure how availability of nitrogen and energy was altered …
Permafrost In A Warmer World: Net Ecosystem Carbon Imbalance, Benjamin W. Abbott
Permafrost In A Warmer World: Net Ecosystem Carbon Imbalance, Benjamin W. Abbott
Biological Sciences
Arctic tundra and boreal forest have accumulated a vast pool of organic carbon, twice as large as the atmospheric carbon pool and three times as large as the carbon contained by all living things. As the permafrost region warms, more of this carbon will be exposed to decomposition, combustion, and hydrologic export. This permafrost carbon feedback has been described as the largest terrestrial feedback to climate change as well as one of the most likely to occur; however, estimates of its strength vary by a factor of thirty. Models predict that some portion of this release will be offset by …

Radial spokes are conserved macromolecular complexes that are essential for ciliary motility. A triplet of three radial spokes, RS1, RS2, and RS3, repeats every 96 nm along the doublet microtubules. Each spoke has a distinct base that docks to the doublet and is linked to different inner dynein arms. Little is known about the assembly and functions of individual radial spokes. A knockout of the conserved ciliary protein FAP206 in the ciliate Tetrahymena resulted in slow cell motility. Cryo–electron tomography showed that in the absence of FAP206, the 96-nm repeats lacked RS2 and dynein c. Occasionally, RS2 assembled but lacked …
Alaska Native Perceptions Of Food, Health, And Community Well-Being: Challenging Nutritional Colonialism, Melanie Lindholm
Alaska Native Perceptions Of Food, Health, And Community Well-Being: Challenging Nutritional Colonialism, Melanie Lindholm
Arctic and Northern Studies
Alaska Native populations have undergone relatively rapid changes in nearly every aspect of life over the past half century. Overall lifestyles have shifted from subsistence-based to wage-based, from traditional to Western, and from self-sustainability to reliance on Outside sources. My research investigates the effects of these changes on health and well-being. The literature appears to lack concern for and documentation of Native peoples' perceptions of the changes in food systems and effects on their communities. Additionally, there is a lack of studies specific to Alaska Native individual perceptions of health and well-being. Therefore, my research aims to help identify social …
Using Experimental Design And Response Surface Methodology To Model Induced Fracture Geometry In Shublik Shale, Venkatasai Sri Poludasu
Using Experimental Design And Response Surface Methodology To Model Induced Fracture Geometry In Shublik Shale, Venkatasai Sri Poludasu
Engineering
The Triassic Shublik Formation of the Alaska North Slope is a world-class resource rock and has been identified as the major source of many of the conventional hydrocarbon accumulations on the North Slope, including Prudhoe Bay. Recent interest in the Shublik as a potential shale resource play has highlighted the need for robust hydraulic fracture modeling and simulation of the interval, but little geologic information is available because of the remote nature of the region and the complex character of the Shublik. In this study, a methodology was developed for identifying the critical variables needed for accurate planning of a …
A Study Of Waterflood Sweep Efficiency In A Complex Viscous Oil Reservoir, Marc Daniel Jensen
A Study Of Waterflood Sweep Efficiency In A Complex Viscous Oil Reservoir, Marc Daniel Jensen
Engineering
West Sak is a multi-billion barrel viscous oil accumulation on the North Slope of Alaska. The unique geologic complexities and fluid properties of the West Sak reservoir make understanding ultimate sweep efficiency under waterflood a challenge. This project uses uncertainty modeling to evaluate the ultimate sweep efficiency in the West Sak reservoir and honors a rich dataset gathered from 30 years of development history. A sector model encompassing the area of the West Sak commercial pilot was developed and a sensitivity analysis conducted to determine the most important parameters affecting sweep efficiency. As part of this process unique constraints were …
Spartan Web Application Firewall, Brian C. Lee
Spartan Web Application Firewall, Brian C. Lee
Master's Projects
Computer security is an ongoing issue and attacks are growing more sophisit- cated. One category of attack utilizes cross-site scripting (XSS) to extract confiden- tial data such as a user’s login credential’s without the knowledge of either the user nor the web server by utilizing vulnerabilities on web pages and internet browsers. Many people develop their own web applications without learning about or having good coding practices or security in mind. Web application firewalls are able to help but can be enhanced to be more effective than they currently are at detecting re- flected XSS attacks by analyzing the request …

Leed Certification Of Campus Buildings: A Cost-Benefit Approach, Erin Ann Hopkins
Leed Certification Of Campus Buildings: A Cost-Benefit Approach, Erin Ann Hopkins
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
No comprehensive study has been done within the higher education sector to see if Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification makes sense economically. This study helps fill the gaps in the literature by providing construction costs and energy and water costs for a sample of campus LEED-certified buildings within the United States. Finding out if campus greening makes sense economically from a full lifecycle standpoint can help address possible upfront green premium barriers. This study found that there is an upfront green premium for LEED-certified campus buildings. However, when looking at LEED-certified campus buildings from a building lifecycle …
Patterns In Size, Growth, And Condition Of Juvenile Chum And Pink Salmon In The Northeastern Bering Sea, Melissa Prechtl
Patterns In Size, Growth, And Condition Of Juvenile Chum And Pink Salmon In The Northeastern Bering Sea, Melissa Prechtl
Fisheries
The Bering Sea has alternated between warm and cool spring thermal regimes, as defined by May sea surface temperature, and in recent years has remained in a "cool" state. Differences in spring thermal regime influence the timing of sea ice extent in the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) region, with warm springs facilitating early ice retreats and cool springs resulting in later ice retreat. A recent conceptual model for relating production to higher trophic levels in the SEBS proposes that during years of early sea ice retreat, phytoplankton blooms occur in warm water and support small, lipid-poor species of zooplankton. Conversely, …
The Third Law Of Galactic Rotation, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
The Third Law Of Galactic Rotation, Stacy S. Mcgaugh
Faculty Scholarship
I review the connection between dynamics and the baryonic mass distribution in rotationally-supported galaxies. The enclosed dynamical mass-to-light ratio increases with decreasing galaxy luminosity and surface brightness. The correlation with surface brightness appears to be the more fundamental, with the dependence on luminosity following simply from the weaker correlation between luminosity and surface brightness. In addition to this global relation, there is also a local relation between the amplitude of the mass discrepancy and the acceleration predicted by the observed distribution of baryons. I provide an empirical calibration of this mass discrepancy-acceleration relation. The data are consistent with the operation …
Biotic And Abiotic Influences On The Use Of Arctic Lakes By Fish And Loons, Trevor B. Haynes
Biotic And Abiotic Influences On The Use Of Arctic Lakes By Fish And Loons, Trevor B. Haynes
Fisheries
The particularly severe effects of climate change anticipated in the Arctic, accompanied by ongoing anthropogenic activities, necessitate proactive and knowledge-based management of the region's aquatic ecosystems. However, the paucity of information on the Arctic's aquatic environments hinders strategic or spatially-explicit management. In this dissertation, I examine the habitat use of poorly studied taxa of the Arctic Coastal Plain (ACP) of Alaska, including freshwater fishes and yellow-billed loons (Gavia adamsii). Distribution studies can be biased by false absences; therefore, I began by determining the detection probabilities of six fish species common to Arctic lakes for five gear types (Chapter 2). Variation …
Identification And Evolution Of Tectonic Faults In The Greater Fairbanks Area, Alaska, Rachel A. Frohman
Identification And Evolution Of Tectonic Faults In The Greater Fairbanks Area, Alaska, Rachel A. Frohman
Geosciences
I have identified evidence for potentially active northeast-striking faults in the greater Fairbanks area and have developed a model for their evolution that defines the character of faults and timing of structural events. Seismicity, topographic data, and geological and geophysical maps show that potentially active faults correspond with previously mapped bedrock faults, topographic lows, and magnetic anomalies. Seismicity indicates that faults in Interior Alaska have low to moderate tectonic activity; geomorphic and structural analyses of mapped faults indicate they are dominantly left-lateral strike-slip, but have smaller normal or reverse components. The normal component of slip increases to the west toward …

Restoring Fort Frontenac In 3d: Effective Usage Of 3d Technology For Heritage Visualization, Mitsuyoshi Yabe
Theses
My thesis is composed of three elements: 3D modeling, web design, and heritage visualization. My goal is to use computer graphics design to inform and create an interest in historical visualization by rebuilding Fort Frontenac using 3D modeling and interactive design. The final model will be integrated into an interactive website to learn more about the fort's historic importance. It is apparent that using computer graphics can save time and money when it comes to historical visualization. Visitors do not have to travel to the actual archaeological buildings. They can simply use the Web in their own home to learn …
Aligning Carbon Fibers In Micro-Extruded Composite Ink, Chaitanya G. Mahajan
Aligning Carbon Fibers In Micro-Extruded Composite Ink, Chaitanya G. Mahajan
Theses
Direct write processes include a wide range of additive manufacturing techniques with the ability to fabricate structures directly onto planar and non-planar surfaces. Most additive manufacturing techniques use unreinforced polymers to produce parts. By adding carbon fiber as a reinforcing material, properties such as mechanical strength, electrical conductivity, and thermal conductivity can be enhanced. Carbon fibers can be long and continuous, or short and discontinuous. The strength of carbon fiber composite parts is greatly increased when the fibers are preferentially aligned. This research focuses on increasing the strength of additively manufactured parts reinforced using discontinuous carbon fibers that have been …
Silicon Doping Profile Measurement Using Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy, Chih-Yu Jen
Silicon Doping Profile Measurement Using Terahertz Time Domain Spectroscopy, Chih-Yu Jen
Theses
Doping profiles in silicon greatly determine electrical performances of microelectronic devices and are frequently engineered to manipulate device properties. To support engineering studies afterward, essential information is usually required for physically characterized doping profiles.
Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS), spreading resistance profiling (SRP) and electrochemical capacitance voltage (ECV) profiling are mainstream techniques for now to measure doping profiles destructively. SIMS produces a chemical doping profile through the ion sputtering process and owns a better characterization resolution. ECV and SPR, on the other hand, gauge an electrical doping profile from the free carrier detection in microelectronic devices. The major discrepancy between …
The Effect Of Topography On The Seismic Wavefield, Ulrika Miller
The Effect Of Topography On The Seismic Wavefield, Ulrika Miller
Geosciences
Active tectonic settings exhibit deformation manifested by earthquakes and by strong topographic variations due to erosion and uplift. Seismic waves from these earthquakes will clearly be influenced by the topographic variations, but it is challenging to isolate the effects of topography from the effects of variations in 3D seismic wave-speed structure. Here we design a realistic numerical experiment to investigate the effects of topography on the regional seismic wavefield. We choose southern California as a target region. We perform several sets of 3D seismic wavefield simulations for 137 earthquake sources ranging from Mw3.4 to 5.4. We test the influence of …

Opinion Expression On Social Networking Sites - Testing An Adapted Spiral Of Silence Model For Political Discussion On Facebook, Katharina Lang
Opinion Expression On Social Networking Sites - Testing An Adapted Spiral Of Silence Model For Political Discussion On Facebook, Katharina Lang
Open Access Dissertations
This study used a quasi-experimental approach to test an adapted model of Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann’s (1974) Spiral of Silence theory. Noelle-Neumann’s (1974) concept has been widely studied and applied to a variety of communication situations, mostly using hypothetical scenarios (“train tests”) and face-to-face interactions. The present research applied the Spiral of Silence concept to political opinion expression on the social networking site Facebook. Two groups of participants were assigned to either a hypothetical interaction condition using a “train test” or to a real interaction condition. Participants in the real interaction condition were asked to join a Facebook group, where they were …
