Creativity In An Arts Integrated Third Space: A Case Study Of Elementary School Students In An International Collaboration, Susan Hyatt
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This qualitative case study examined the impact of an arts integrated international collaboration on elementary school students’ creativity when the students were communicating and creating exclusively through a technological third space. Two organizations, one in the U.S. and one in Mexico, served as the sites for the case study. Five findings emerged from the study relating to the nature of creativity and two findings related to the impact on students’ creativity when engaged in arts-integrated international collaboration. The findings for the first question were: 1. Students and teaching artists view creativity as a process that is reflexive and engaging, 2. …
Comparison Of Treatment Plans Calculated Using Ray Tracing And Monte Carlo Algorithms For Lung Cancer Patients Having Undergone Radiotherapy With Cyberknife, Andreea Pennington
Comparison Of Treatment Plans Calculated Using Ray Tracing And Monte Carlo Algorithms For Lung Cancer Patients Having Undergone Radiotherapy With Cyberknife, Andreea Pennington
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this research is to determine the feasibility of introducing the Monte Carlo (MC) dose calculation algorithm into the clinical practice. Unlike the Ray Tracing (RT) algorithm, the MC algorithm is not affected by the tissue inhomogeneities, which are significant inside the chest cavity. A retrospective study was completed for 102 plans calculated using both the RT and MC algorithms. The D95 of the PTV was 26% lower for the MC calculation. The first parameter of conformality, as defined as the ratio of the Prescription Isodose Volume to the PTV Volume was on average 1.27 for RT and …
Ctni N-Terminal Deletion: An Agent For Rescuing Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, A Disease Caused By Mutations Of Cardiac Troponin I, Cecile A. Getfield
Ctni N-Terminal Deletion: An Agent For Rescuing Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, A Disease Caused By Mutations Of Cardiac Troponin I, Cecile A. Getfield
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is represented in part by left ventricular stiffness and diastolic dysfunction. Missense mutations of the cardiac troponin I (cTnI) gene cause idiopathic RCM. These mutations are located in the C-terminus of cTnI and affect cardiac relaxation. Transgenic mouse models presenting the pathology observed in clinical patients with RCM have been generated previously and express the mutant cTnI in their hearts. RCM-linked mutations increase cardiac myofilament Ca2+ sensitivity and promote diastolic dysfunction in the heart. Previous studies using double transgenic mice (cTnI/R193H/ND) showed that ventricular relaxation is enhanced in the cTnI/R193H transgenic mice. In this study, another double …
Dante’S Lucifer In The Commedia: Music, Pride, And The Corruption Of The Divine, Rosina P. Zimmer
Dante’S Lucifer In The Commedia: Music, Pride, And The Corruption Of The Divine, Rosina P. Zimmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The entity of Lucifer has long been an area of study and confusion throughout history. Among notable literary minds, Dante Alighieri stands out as an illuminating poet who brings to light the essence and nature of this nefarious character and his influence on mankind. In his revelatory work, the Commedia, Dante touches on but does not explicitly detail the scope and importance that music and specifically, song, has on the redemptive purgation of the soul. This work provides a more in depth investigation into the generally overlooked issue, that is, the origin and initial intent of song, the perversion of …

Design And Implementation Of Driver Drowsiness Detection System, Aleksandar Colic
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
There is a substantial amount of evidence that suggests that driver drowsiness plays a significant role in road accidents. Alarming recent statistics are raising the interest in equipping vehicles with driver drowsiness detection systems. This dissertation describes the design and implementation of a driver drowsiness detection system that is based on the analysis of visual input consisting of the driver's face and eyes. The resulting system combines off-the-shelf software components for face detection, human skin color detection and eye state classification in a novel way. It follows a behavioral methodology by performing a non-invasive monitoring of external cues describing a …
Detection And Classification Of Marine Mammal Sounds, Mahdi Esfahanian
Detection And Classification Of Marine Mammal Sounds, Mahdi Esfahanian
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Ocean is home to a large population of marine mammals such as dolphins and whales and concerns over anthropogenic activities in the regions close to their habitants have been increased. Therefore the ability to detect the presence of these species in the field, to analyze and classify their vocalization patterns for signs of distress and distortion of their communication calls will prove to be invaluable in protecting these species. The objective of this research is to investigate methods that automatically detect and classify vocalization patterns of marine mammals. The first work performed is the classification of bottlenose dolphin calls by …
Determining Functionality And Living Patterns: A Phosphate Analysis Of Two Prehistoric Structures In Río Blanco, Ecuador, Brittany L. Reneau
Determining Functionality And Living Patterns: A Phosphate Analysis Of Two Prehistoric Structures In Río Blanco, Ecuador, Brittany L. Reneau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Archaeologists have identified many prehistoric structures affiliated with the Manteño culture (500 CE to 1532 CE) of coastal Ecuador, but the function of those constructions is rarely understood. As part of an ongoing project by Florida Atlantic University to explore the function of these buildings, I conducted systematic soil phosphate testing in and around two archaeological structures and, for ethnoarchaeological comparison, four contemporary households. The two prehistoric structures are located 200 meters from each other and on two different river terraces within the same river valley. They are part of a larger site (C4-084). I found clear spatial patterning in …
Documentary Theatre: Pedagogue And Healer With Their Voices Raised, Kathryn M. Morris
Documentary Theatre: Pedagogue And Healer With Their Voices Raised, Kathryn M. Morris
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The beginning of the new millennium finds documentary theatre serving as teacher and “healer” to those suffering and in need. By providing a thought provoking awareness of the “other,” it offers a unique lens with which to examine the socio-political similarities and differences between various cultures and ethnicities in order to promote intercultural understanding. Documentary is also used by teachers, therapists, and researchers as a tool for healing. By sharing personal stories of trauma and illness with others who are experiencing similar difficulties, emotional pains are alleviated and fears are assuaged. Documentary theatre has expanded in definition from the “epic …

In this thesis we will discuss the methods and procedures used in the studies to analyze the datasets and their effects on treatment prediction with a particular interest in the selection …
An Analysis Of Religiosity In The United States: Testing The Secure Society Theory, James Liddle
An Analysis Of Religiosity In The United States: Testing The Secure Society Theory, James Liddle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The current study sought set to replicate and extend previous findings regarding Norris and Inglehart’s (2004) “Secure Society Theory” (SST) of religiosity, which states that religiosity varies as a function of the extent to which one feels secure in their environment. However, the relationship between individual perceptions of societal security—as opposed to national indicators—and religiosity has yet to be tested. The current study addressed this by analyzing data from the General Social Survey, supplemented by FBI and U.S. Census data. Results indicated that the extent to which one feels safe walking around their neighborhood at night is a significant predictor …

An Interactive System To Enhance Social And Verbal Communication Skills Of Children Withautism Spectrum Disorders, Maria Jose Minan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Affecting one in every 68 children, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the fastest growing developmental disabilities. Scientific research has proven that early behavioral intervention can improve learning, communication, and social skills. Similarly, studies have shown that the usage of of-the-shelf technology boosts motivation in children diagnosed with ASD while increasing their attention span and ability to interact socially. Embracing perspectives from different fields of study can lead to the development of an effective tool to complement traditional treatment of those with ASD. This thesis documents the re-engineering, extension, and evolu- tion of Ying, an existing web application designed …
Analysis Of Morphology, Growth Rate, And Fragmentation Of The Endangered Lichen Species Cladonia Perforata, David Warren Witmer
Analysis Of Morphology, Growth Rate, And Fragmentation Of The Endangered Lichen Species Cladonia Perforata, David Warren Witmer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Cladonia perforata is an endangered lichen endemic to the Atlantic Coastal Ridge, Lake Wales Ridge, Southwest Florida, and the North Gulf Coast of Florida. In all but a single locality, C. perforata relies entirely on asexual reproduction through fragmentation for reproduction, dispersal, and recruitment. This study suggests a positive correlation between fragment size and survivability of fragments after one year. The average thallus grew at a rate of 10.42% per year and younger branches of a thallus grew at a quicker rate than older branches. Additionally, a review of thalli morphology suggests C. perforata has a diverse form, and becomes …
Attentional Basis Of Deontic Reasoning About Permission Rules In 3-5 Year-Old Children, Patrick D Ii Sellers
Attentional Basis Of Deontic Reasoning About Permission Rules In 3-5 Year-Old Children, Patrick D Ii Sellers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Deontic reasoning is a domain of reasoning concerning permissions, obligations, and prohibitions often utilizing conditional logic (Wason, 1968). Correct identification of rule violations is bolstered by the addition of a social valence to the rule for both adults (Tooby & Cosmides, 1992) and children (Harris & Nunez, 1996). This “deontic advantage” for violation-detection is taken as evidence for evolved social-cognitive mechanisms for reasoning about cheaters in the context of social contracts (Fiddick, 2004), and the early development of this advantage supports an evolutionary account of such abilities (Cummins, 2013). The current research hypothesized that differential attention to rule elements underlies …
Fisher V. University Of Texas At Austin: Grutter (Not) Revisited , Lawrence R. Purdy
Fisher V. University Of Texas At Austin: Grutter (Not) Revisited , Lawrence R. Purdy
Missouri Law Review
What follows is a description of UT's race-conscious undergraduate admissions policy, which was at issue in Fisher (and which the parties and the courts concede is all but identical to the policy upheld in Grutter). This is followed by a brief description of the procedural posture of the case and an analysis of the Supreme Court's decision. Finally, this Article argues that Grutter (and, by default, Fisher) represents a dramatic deviation from - and, in effect, a reversal of - the bedrock principle established in Brown. Left unanswered, of course, is whether our nation's highest court will ever reassert that …
It's Not Over 'Til It's Over: Mandating Federal Pretrial Jurisdiction And Oversight In Mass Torts, Tanya Pierce
It's Not Over 'Til It's Over: Mandating Federal Pretrial Jurisdiction And Oversight In Mass Torts, Tanya Pierce
Missouri Law Review
Nearly twenty years ago, speaking of the difficulties inherent in managing mass tort cases, Chief Justice William Rehnquist predicted that without coordinated state and federal mechanisms, lawyers would "seek to pursue duplicative and exhaustive litigation." And some courts, "operating under a parochial view of the situation," would allow them to do so. He warned that the result would be "expense, delay, resulting crowding of dockets, divergent decisions on identical factual questions, and sometimes the insolvency of the defendants who are being sued." Despite this and similar warnings, expensive and exhaustive litigation is exactly what has happened in many cases.

Using Mobile Learning To Support Students’ Understanding In Geometry: A Design-Based Research Curriculum Study, Helen Crompton
Using Mobile Learning To Support Students’ Understanding In Geometry: A Design-Based Research Curriculum Study, Helen Crompton
Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
Mobile learning offers new affordances to teaching and learning, such as learning that is contextualized, personalized, and unrestricted by temporal and spatial constraints (Crompton, 2013a). In this study, the affordances of mobile learning were utilized as students learned about angles. Using a design-based research methodology a local instruction theory was developed on how students can learn about angle concepts through mobile learning activities. The local instruction theory is comprised of two components: (a) an exemplary mobile learning curriculum for 4th grade students to study angle concepts, and (b) additions to the scholarly theories in how students learning about angle using …

Background: The prevalence of self -medication with antibiotics is quite high in developing countries as opposed to developed countries. Antibiotics are often taken erroneously for certain ailments, without having the appropriate knowledge of their use. This carries potential risks for the individual as well as the community, in form of several side effects such as antibiotic resistance. Therefore the prevalence of self-medicated antibiotics in developing countries needs to be studied. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out at six different non-medical universities of Karachi. 431 students were included in the study. Data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and analyzed using …

Democratic Deliberation And The Ethical Review Of Human Subjects Research, Govind Persad
Publications
In the United States, the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues has proposed deliberative democracy as an approach for dealing with ethical issues surrounding synthetic biology. Deliberative democracy might similarly help us as we update the regulation of human subjects research. This paper considers how the values that deliberative democratic engagement aims to realize can be realized in a human subjects research context. Deliberative democracy is characterized by an ongoing exchange of ideas between participants, and an effort to justify decisions that bind participants by appeal to reasons that the participants can understand and share. Even when unanimous …

Libertarian Patriarchalism: Nudges, Procedural Roadblocks, And Reproductive Choice, Govind Persad
Publications
Cass Sunstein and Richard Thaler's proposal that social and legal institutions should steer individuals toward some options and away from others-a stance they dub "libertarian paternalism"-has provoked much high-level discussion in both academic and policy settings. Sunstein and Thaler believe that steering, or "nudging," individuals is easier to justify than the bans or mandates that traditional paternalism involves. This Article considers the connection between libertarian paternalism and the regulation of reproductive choice. I first discuss the use of nudges to discourage women from exercising their right to choose an abortion, or from becoming or remaining pregnant. I then argue that …

Sentencing Terrorist Crimes, Wadie E. Said
Publications
The legal framework behind the sentencing of individuals convicted of committing terrorist crimes has received little scholarly attention, even with the proliferation of such prosecutions in the eleven years following the attacks of September 11, 2001. This lack of attention is particularly striking in light of the robust and multifaceted scholarship that deals with the challenges inherent in criminal sentencing more generally, driven in no small part by the comparatively large number of sentencing decisions issued by the United States Supreme Court over the past thirteen years. Reduced to its essence, the Supreme Court's sentencing jurisprudence requires district courts to …
Citizens United, States Divided: An Empirical Analysis Of Independent Political Spending, Douglas M. Spencer, Abby K. Wood
Citizens United, States Divided: An Empirical Analysis Of Independent Political Spending, Douglas M. Spencer, Abby K. Wood
Publications
What effect has Citizens United v. FEC had on independent spending in American politics? Previous attempts to answer this question have focused solely on federal elections, where there is no baseline for comparing changes in spending behavior. We overcome this limitation by examining the effects of Citizens United as a natural experiment on the states. Before Citizens United, about half of the states banned corporate independent expenditures and thus were "treated" by the Supreme Court's decision, which invalidated these state laws. We rely on recently released state-level data to compare spending in "treated" states to spending in the "control" states, …
The 'Shock And Awe' Approach To Legal Research: Helping Students Understand Their Research Deficiencies So That They Are Better Prepared To Learn Legal Research, Karen Skinner
Publications
This article discusses the unique approach that the law librarians at the University of Southern California use during first-year legal research to expose student overconfidence in research skills and to teach a new framework for improving those skills.
