An Institutional Alchemy: India’S Two Parliaments In Comparative Perspective, Shubhankar Dam Jan 2014

An Institutional Alchemy: India’S Two Parliaments In Comparative Perspective, Shubhankar Dam

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

India has a parliamentary system. But articled in India’s Constitution is a provision that authorizes the President to occasionally enact legislation without involving Parliament. Such presidential legislation are called ordinances, not Acts; and rather than enact, the President promulgates them. Textually, ordinances are bounded by several ‘controls’. They are limited to circumstances when at least one House of Parliament is not in session, and the President is satisfied that the circumstances are such that immediate action is necessary. And without such formal parliamentary approval after a specified duration, they cease to exist. But after sixty years of constitutional practice these …

Right Ventricular Perforation: A Rare Complication Of Pulmonary Artery Catheterization, Khalid Ahsan, Mohammad Hamid, Saulat H. Fatimi, Ijaz Hidayat Jan 2014

Right Ventricular Perforation: A Rare Complication Of Pulmonary Artery Catheterization, Khalid Ahsan, Mohammad Hamid, Saulat H. Fatimi, Ijaz Hidayat

Department of Anaesthesia

A 70 years old male underwent Coronary Artery Bypass and Graft (CABG) surgery. After induction, a Pulmonary Artery Catheter (PAC) was inserted via right IJV with some difficulty in achieving PA tracing. During distal RCA anastomosis, surgeon noticed PAC tip coming out of Right Ventricular (RV) surface. Resistance was felt on trying to pull PAC, so it was left there. Cardiac surgeon then opened the Right Atrium (RA) and pulled out the catheter. Multiple attempts during insertion of PA catheter should always raise the suspicion of PAC tip slipping back into the RV. It should be closely monitored during surgery …

Wide-Gain Range Bridgeless Pfc Modified Sepic Rectifier, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al Gabri Jan 2014

Wide-Gain Range Bridgeless Pfc Modified Sepic Rectifier, Ahmed Mohammed Ahmed Al Gabri

Theses

With the increasing demand for power from the ac line and more strict limits for power quality, power factor correction has gained great attention in recent years. AII basic power converter topologies, such as Boost, Buck, Buck-Boost, and their variations, can be used to realize active PFC techniques. In this research, a new bridge less rectifier that operates with high power factor and high efficiency is investigated targeting LED and battery charging applications. The new topology is a high-power-factor rectifier, which is suitable for universal line base on a modified version of the single-ended primary inductance converter (SEPIC) operating in …

Stability And Accuracy Of Long-Term Memory For Musical Pitch [Journal Article], Alyce K. Hay, Craig P. Speelman Jan 2014

Stability And Accuracy Of Long-Term Memory For Musical Pitch [Journal Article], Alyce K. Hay, Craig P. Speelman

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Existing research gives an inconsistent picture of the nature of the cognitive processes underlying memory for musical information. A study was conducted to investigate the stability and accuracy of long-term memory for pitch amongst individuals who have not had musical training. Excerpts from well-known pop songs were used as stimuli. Participants heard one long sequence of excerpts, each of which had been raised or lowered in pitch by one semitone, or left unaltered. After hearing each excerpt, participants were asked to detect whether it was different from the original version of the song they remembered. Participants were significantly worse at …

The 'Oldest Tricks In The Book' Do Not Work! Reports Of Burglary By Duma Detainees In Western Australia, Natalie J. Gately, Jennifer Fleming, Nathalie Mcginty, Anthony M. Scott Jan 2014

The 'Oldest Tricks In The Book' Do Not Work! Reports Of Burglary By Duma Detainees In Western Australia, Natalie J. Gately, Jennifer Fleming, Nathalie Mcginty, Anthony M. Scott

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

Foreword : Research investigating the methods and motivations of burglars has typically focused on incarcerated offenders. The Australian Institute of Criminology’s Drug Use Monitoring in Australia (DUMA) program provided an opportunity for the authors to explore the methods and motivations of those actively involved in committing burglaries, whether or not they had actually been caught or detained for that offence. The findings support Routine Activity Theory, indicating that offenders consider a number of factors in determining whether a property will be targeted for a break and enter offence. As might be expected, opportunistic burglars choose easy to access properties, stay …

Thus, this study reports on the evaluation of the Anker Bilateral Spatial System’s (ABSS) effectiveness in remediating primary school children’s perceptual difficulties.

Method: Thirty-one children (17 boys and 14 girls) aged 6 to 12 years who had been identified by their classroom teacher as having observable visual-spatial and visual-motor perceptual difficulties participated in a 10-week pre/posttest intervention study. The study’s pre/posttest assessments included the Developmental Test of Visual-Motor …

Drawing On Student Knowledge In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Tara Slominski Jan 2014

Drawing On Student Knowledge In Human Anatomy And Physiology, Tara Slominski

Biological Sciences

Prior to instruction, students may have developed alternative conceptions about the mechanics behind human physiology. To help students re-shape these ideas into correct reasoning, the faulty characteristics reinforcing the alternative conceptions need to made explicit. This study used student-generated drawings to expose alternative conceptions Human Anatomy and Physiology students had prior to instruction on neuron physiology. Specifically, we investigated how students thought about neuron communication across a synapse (n=355) and how neuron activity can be modified (n=311). When asked to depict basic communication between two neurons, at least 80% of students demonstrated incorrect ideas about synaptic transmission. When targeting spatial …

The Distribution And Habitat Use Of North Dakota Bats, Paul Roy Barnhart Jan 2014

The Distribution And Habitat Use Of North Dakota Bats, Paul Roy Barnhart

Biological Sciences

Prior to 2009, a comprehensive statewide survey of occurrence and distribution of bats in North Dakota had not been conducted. From 2009 to 2012, mist netting, radio telemetry, and acoustic monitoring were conducted to document species presence and habitat associations across North Dakota. We surveyed multiple sites at 17 locations, captured a total of 309 bats, documented habitat associations, and identified roosting sites. Data was then used to: 1) build habitat suitability maps (also called species distribution maps or SDMs) for each species in the state, 2) examine the environmental and climatic variables that influence bat habitat use along the …

Evolution Of The Growth Hormone Receptor: Insights Into The Molecular Basis Of The Physiologically Pleiotropic Nature Of The Growth Hormone Receptor, Elizabeth Rose Ellens Jan 2014

Evolution Of The Growth Hormone Receptor: Insights Into The Molecular Basis Of The Physiologically Pleiotropic Nature Of The Growth Hormone Receptor, Elizabeth Rose Ellens

Biological Sciences

One of the oldest, extant, lineages of vertebrates, the sea lamprey, was used to clarify the evolutionary origin and divergence of the growth hormone receptor (GHR) family. A single, full-length, cDNA, and a second, partial, cDNA were identified and shown to encode proteins that share amino acid identity with GHRs and prolactin receptors (PRLR s) previously identified. The complexity of the dynamic signaling system, with special emphasis on this system in fish and in the context of the evolution of this system, is discussed in the first chapter. The second chapter integrates the new insights gained by these studies. Included …

Diet And Effects Of Environmental Stressors On The Altricial Nestlings Of Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus), Jacob G. Randa Jan 2014

Diet And Effects Of Environmental Stressors On The Altricial Nestlings Of Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus), Jacob G. Randa

Biological Sciences

Double-crested cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) are a common species of altricial waterbird found across much of North America. As a piscivorous colonial waterbird, cormorants are often persecuted due to perceived impacts on fisheries. In this study I examined the diet of cormorant nestlings at five cormorant colonies in central North America to answer two questions: 1) Is nestling diet reflective of opportunistic feeding behavior, thus diminishing the likelihood of negative impacts to the fishery? and 2) How do diet and environmental stressors effect the development of cormorant nestlings? By analyzing the caloric content of nestling diet and quantifying environmental stressors such …

Effects Of Vibrotactile Display Position And Shape On Extrapersonal Localization, Adam D. Sitz Jan 2014

Effects Of Vibrotactile Display Position And Shape On Extrapersonal Localization, Adam D. Sitz

Psychology Theses & Dissertations

Vibrotactile displays are capable of conveying extrapersonal spatial information to users navigating or operating within a three-dimensional environment (e.g., aircraft pilots). Although vibrotactile displays can be applied to many parts of the body, recent applications have focused on torso-based displays that egocentrically reference distal targets. However, these displays may be poorly suited to convey elevation because of the generally cylindrical shape of the human torso. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the relative effectiveness of handheld vibrotactile displays configured either in a cylindrical or spherical-shape as compared to a torso-based display. Due to its shape, the spherical …

Naval Aviation Squadron Risk Analysis Predictive Bayesian Network Modeling Using Maintenance Climate Assessment Survey Results, Harry Michael Robinson Jan 2014

Naval Aviation Squadron Risk Analysis Predictive Bayesian Network Modeling Using Maintenance Climate Assessment Survey Results, Harry Michael Robinson

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Associated risks in flying have resulted in injury or death to aircrew and passengers, and damage or destruction of the aircraft and its surroundings. Although the Naval Aviation's flight mishap rate declined over the past 60 years, the proportion of human error causal factors has stayed relatively constant at about 80%. Efforts to reduce human errors have focused attention on understanding the aircrew and maintenance actions occurring in complex systems.

One such tool has been the Naval Aviation squadrons' regular participation in survey questionnaires deigned to measure respondent ratings related to personal judgments or perceptions of organizational climate for meeting …

A Nonrigid Registration Method For Correcting Brain Deformation Induced By Tumor Resection, Yixun Liu, Chengjun Yao, Fotis Drakopoulos, Jinsong Wu, Liangfu Zhou, Nikos Chrisochoides

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Purpose: This paper presents a nonrigid registration method to align preoperative MRI with intraoperative MRI to compensate for brain deformation during tumor resection. This method extends traditional point-based nonrigid registration in two aspects: (1) allow the input data to be incomplete and (2) simulate the underlying deformation with a heterogeneous biomechanical model.

Methods: The method formulates the registration as a three-variable (point correspondence, deformation field, and resection region) functional minimization problem, in which point correspondence is represented by a fuzzy assign matrix; Deformation field is represented by a piecewise linear function regularized by the strain energy of a heterogeneous biomechanical …

Psychological Reactance And Verbal Defensiveness In The Workplace: The Effects Of Perceived Face Threat And Interactional Justice In Supervisor Requests, Qin Zhang, Donald E. Gibson

Iowa Journal of Communication

This study investigated the moderating effects of perceived face threat and interactional justice in supervisor requests on employee psychological reactance and examined the mediating effects of reactance in the relationships of perceived freedom threat, face threat, and interactional justice with verbal defensiveness. Results showed that perceived face threat had significant main effects and moderating effects on reactance, but interactional justice, in spite of its significant main effects, did not have moderating effects on reactance. Results also showed that reactance did not mediate the effects of perceived freedom threat, face threat, and interactional justice on verbal defensiveness in real organizational setting.

Enhancing Understanding Of Discrete Event Simulation Models Through Analysis, Kara Ann Olson Jan 2014

Enhancing Understanding Of Discrete Event Simulation Models Through Analysis, Kara Ann Olson

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Simulation is used increasingly throughout research, development, and planning for many purposes. While model output is often the primary interest, insights gained through the simulation process can also be valuable. Insights can come from building and validating the model as well as analyzing its behaviors and output; however, much that could be informative may not be easily discernible through these existing traditional approaches, particularly as models continue to increase in complexity.

This research extends current work in model analysis and program understanding to assist modelers in obtaining more insight into their models and the systems they represent. A primary technique …

The Effect Of Self-Regulated Learning Strategy Training And Question Generation On Metacognitive Awareness And Achievement Among College Students Enrolled In Science Courses, Derrick L. Wilkins

STEMPS Theses & Dissertations

Transitioning from high school students to college students can be a difficult task for students who do not know how to regulate their own study processes. Literature in the areas of metacognition, self-regulated learning (SRL), and question generation suggest a correlation between metacognitive awareness, SRL, and achievement. The present study was guided by efforts to improve college students' achievement by promoting generative learning strategies and metacognitive awareness. Fifty-one undergraduate students enrolled in a general education biology course at a southeastern university participated in this three-week experimental study. The researcher used the Metacognitive Self-Regulation Scale of the Motivated Strategies for Learning …

Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon Jan 2014

Rational Choice And Moral Decision-Making In Research, Anita M. Gordon

Faculty Work

University psychology and sociology researchers rated the likelihood they would engage in misconduct as described in 9 research scenarios, while also making moral judgments and rating the likelihood of discovery and sanctions. Multiple regression revealed significant effects across various scenarios for moral judgment as well as shame and embarrassment on reducing misconduct. The effects on misconduct of the perceived probability of sanctions were conditioned on moral judgments in some scenarios. The results have implications for how universities address the prevention, detection, and sanctioning of research misconduct.

“Mathematicians actually spend a great deal of time writing. If a mathematician wants to contribute to the greater body of mathematical knowledge, she must be able communicate her ideas in a way which is comprehensible to others.” Lee, 2014, pg. 1

Why should our students be different from the mathematicians Lee (2014) refers to in the quote above? Learning mathematics requires a confluence of spoken, written and mathematically abstract languages. After all, who thinks entirely in mathematical symbols? No one, except a few mathematical thinkers who are live in the abstract worlds they construct. Thinking about mathematics in the language …

Advances In Understanding The Molecular Composition Of Dissolved Organic Matter And Its Reactivity In The Environment, Rajaa Mesfioui

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is the ultimate product of Earth's systems dynamics. DOM chemical signature is strongly shaped by the interaction among Earth's spheres, such as the atmosphere, the geosphere, the biosphere, and the hydrosphere, but also life and human activity. DOM source, composition, photochemical alteration and availability affect freshwater ecosystems, their carbon and nitrogen fluxes and, thus, the global carbon and nitrogen cycles. The aim of this thesis was to gain an understanding of the molecular composition of DOM and its photochemical and biological reactivity in an environment impacted by anthropogenic disturbance. The York and James River systems within …

Implicit Bias Deserves Our Explicit Attention, Kimberly Jade Norwood Jan 2014

Implicit Bias Deserves Our Explicit Attention, Kimberly Jade Norwood

Scholarship@WashULaw

What are implicit biases? In brief, we all walk around with two sets of attitudes and beliefs: our conscious (explicit) attitudes and our unconscious (implicit) attitudes. Scientists believe that human consciousness takes up approximately 10 percent of our brain activity. That means that for most things, our unconscious mind is doing the work. Implicit biases exist within our unconscious mind. Our brains are bombarded with millions of bits of information every second. To avoid overload, our brains automatically categorize information into schemas that we use to guide us in our everyday living.

The International War Against Doping: Limiting The Collateral Damage From Strict Liability, Thomas W. Cox Jan 2014

The International War Against Doping: Limiting The Collateral Damage From Strict Liability, Thomas W. Cox

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the World Anti-Doping Code are largely considered the model for an effective and well-coordinated antidoping regime. This model has allowed numerous sports and various countries to secure the same rules for domestic and international athletes. Within this regime, strict liability for prohibited substances stands as the "cornerstone." Strict liability has allowed antidoping officials to prosecute doping violations through an effective testing regime. However, this principle occasionally implicates innocent athletes with no intention of performance enhancement. This Note proposes that WADA modify its criteria for including substances on the Prohibited List and suspend strict liability …

Business, Human Rights, And The Promise Of Polycentricity, Jamie D. Prenkert, Scott J. Shackelford Jan 2014

Business, Human Rights, And The Promise Of Polycentricity, Jamie D. Prenkert, Scott J. Shackelford

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the Issue of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises (SRSG) John Ruggie referred to the "Protect, Respect, and Remedy" Framework (PRR Framework) and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (Guiding Principles) as a polycentric governance system. However, the exact meaning of this phrase has not been very carefully elucidated. This Article analyzes that description in the context of the deep and varied body of literature on polycentric governance and evaluates the PRR Framework in that light. In particular, this Article uses a case-study approach, analyzing the emerging polycentric …
