There is evidence that nanoparticles (NP) cross epithelial and endothelial body barriers. We hypothesized that gold (Au) NP, once in the blood circulation of pregnant rats, will cross the placental barrier during pregnancy size-dependently and accumulate in the fetal organism by 1. transcellular transport across the hemochorial placenta, 2. transcellular transport across amniotic membranes 3. transport through ~20 nm wide transtrophoblastic channels in a size dependent manner. The three AuNP sizes used to test this hypothesis are either well below, or of similar size or well above the diameters of the transtrophoblastic channels.

Water Resources Systems Analysis: A Bright Past And Challenging But Promising Future, David E. Rosenberg, Kaveh Madani
Water Resources Systems Analysis: A Bright Past And Challenging But Promising Future, David E. Rosenberg, Kaveh Madani
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
The field of water resources systems analysis is now experiencing one of its most exciting eras where scientists, decision makers, and funding agencies want to apply systems approaches to solve varied, complex, uncertain, and interdisciplinary resource management problems. Solving these problems presents great opportunities for us to engage in complex, real-world decision-making and make positive changes. However, to capitalize on these opportunities, we as a field must also overcome several large challenges related to problem identification, integration, blind use of systems tools, a focus on optimality, and harnessing big data. To overcome, we must look back to find what we …
The Philosophers' Stone: Alchemical Imagination And The Soul's Logical Life, Stanton Marlan
The Philosophers' Stone: Alchemical Imagination And The Soul's Logical Life, Stanton Marlan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Alchemy has been viewed within the context of the history of natural science as a precursor to and a primitive form of chemistry. The enigmatic goal of the alchemical process, the Philosophers' Stone, is the focus of this dissertation. A natural scientific approach has shed little light on the mythical, esoteric and symbolic attributes of the Stone, which are intrinsic parts of the alchemical imagination. From the larger perspective of the history of the human spirit, these neglected aspects of the Philosophers' Stone can be seen as vital dimensions of an ancient religious and spiritual philosophy, the goal of which …

Subjective Cognitive Fatigue In Multiple Sclerosis Depends On Task Length, Joshua Sandry, Helen M. Genova, Ekaterina Dobryakova, John Deluca, Glenn Wylie
Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Objective: The objective of this paper is to investigate the interrelationship between subjective and objective cognitive fatigue, information processing domain (processing speed vs. working memory), cognitive load (high vs low), and time on task in Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Methods: 32 MS participants and 24 healthy controls completed experimental tasks in both the processing speed and working memory domains with different levels of cognitive load. Subjective cognitive fatigue was measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS) at baseline and at multiple time points throughout the experiment. Results. A mixed model ANOVA revealed that subjective cognitive fatigue was higher for the processing …
Do We Know Who We Are By Knowing Who We Are Not?: The Effects Of Including Disliked Others In The Self-Concept, Stephanie B. Richman
Do We Know Who We Are By Knowing Who We Are Not?: The Effects Of Including Disliked Others In The Self-Concept, Stephanie B. Richman
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
People include other people in their self-concept. Research has examined the causes and effects of including liked, but not disliked others into the self-concept. Liked others are included because of a motivation to affiliate and get closer to the other person. The current investigation examined whether disliked others are included as a result of a motivation to differentiate and distinguish oneself from the other person. It also examined how self-concept inclusion of disliked others affects self-concept clarity. First, I tested whether people include disliked others into their self-concepts by showing a memory bias for disliked others similar to that of …
Self-Regulation In Older Adults: The Prioritization Of Emotion Regulation, Daniel R. Evans
Self-Regulation In Older Adults: The Prioritization Of Emotion Regulation, Daniel R. Evans
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Despite having fewer cognitive resources, older adults regulate their emotions as well as, if not better than, younger adults. This study aimed to (1) test the limits of older adults’ emotion regulation capacity and (2) gain a better understanding of how older adults use their more limited resources to regulate their emotions. Participants included 48 healthy older adults aged 65-85 from the community and 50 healthy younger adults aged 18-25 from the student population. They were randomly assigned to one of four experimental groups involving an initial activity that was high or low in self-regulatory demand followed by a test …
Effects Of Coaching In The Detection Of Malingered Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In A College Sample, Maryanne Edmundson
Effects Of Coaching In The Detection Of Malingered Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In A College Sample, Maryanne Edmundson
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
College students may feign symptoms of ADHD to gain access to stimulant medications and academic accommodations. Research has shown that it can be difficult to discriminate malingered from genuine symptomatology, especially when evaluations are based only on self-report. The present study investigated whether the average student given no additional information could feign ADHD as successfully as those who were coached on symptoms. Similar to Jasinski, Harp, Berry, Shandera-Ochsner, Mason, & Ranseen (2011) and other research on feigned ADHD, an extensive battery of neuropsychological, symptom validity, and self-report tests was administered. Undergraduates with no history of ADHD or other psychiatric disorders …
Diaphragmatic Breathing And Its Effect On Inhibitory Control, Matthew Russell
Diaphragmatic Breathing And Its Effect On Inhibitory Control, Matthew Russell
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Evidence suggests that slow paced diaphragmatic breathing (DB) can significantly affect prefrontal cortex functions through increasing an individual’s physiological self-regulatory capacity. The current research demonstrates the effects of paced DB on inhibitory control, which is considered to be a reliable measure of behavioral self-regulation. Eighty healthy participants were randomly assigned to one of two conditions (20 males and females each). Participants were instructed on either DB at a pace of six-breaths per minute (BPM) or instructions on environmental awareness and asked to breathe at 12 BPM. Following training, all participants completed a computer-based task designed to examine inhibitory processes. Physiological …
Acute Effects Of Alcohol On Simulated Driving Performance And Self-Perceptions Of Impairment In Dui Offenders, Nicholas A. Van Dyke
Acute Effects Of Alcohol On Simulated Driving Performance And Self-Perceptions Of Impairment In Dui Offenders, Nicholas A. Van Dyke
Theses and Dissertations--Psychology
Licensed drivers arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol have increased rates of vehicle crashes, moving violations, and traffic tickets (Evans, 2004). To date, no research has examined specific self-regulatory mechanisms of the DUI driver under a dose of alcohol that might underlie risky driving behavior. The present study examined the degree to which DUI drivers display an increased sensitivity to the acute impairing effects of alcohol on driving performance and overestimate their driving fitness following alcohol consumption. Adult drivers with a history of DUI and a demographically-matched group of control drivers without a DUI were tested following …

A Small Subset Of Fruitless Subesophageal Neurons Modulate Early Courtship In Drosophila, David Tran, Geoffrey Meissner, Rachael French, Bruce Baker
Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences
We show that a small subset of two to six subesophageal neurons, expressing the male products of the male courtship master regulator gene products fruitlessMale (fruM), are required in the early stages of the Drosophila melanogaster male courtship behavioral program. Loss of fruM expression or inhibition of synaptic transmission in these fruM(+) neurons results in delayed courtship initiation and a failure to progress to copulation primarily under visually-deficient conditions. We identify a fruM-dependent sexually dimorphic arborization in the tritocerebrum made by two of these neurons. Furthermore, these SOG neurons extend descending projections to the thorax and abdominal ganglia. These anatomical …
The Impact Of Software Testing Governance Choices, Xihui Zhang, Colin Onita, Jasbir Dhaliwal
The Impact Of Software Testing Governance Choices, Xihui Zhang, Colin Onita, Jasbir Dhaliwal
Faculty Publications
Software testing is becoming a critical component of software development, especially because of the proliferation of complex, interconnected, and real-time business applications. As a result, information technology (IT) managers are struggling with pragmatic governance mechanisms for integrating testing with development.Governance issues pertaining to how software testing is organized at strategic, tactical, and operational levels, however, have not received adequate attention in the literature. This study explores the impact of three specificgovernance mechanisms, including the existence of a distinct corporate testing unit, developers and testersreporting to different executives, and the existence of one-to-one matching between developers and testers,on the organizational integration of …
Macroeconomic Variables Effect On Us Market Volatility Using Mc-Garch Model, Jang Hyung Cho, Ahmed Elshahat
Macroeconomic Variables Effect On Us Market Volatility Using Mc-Garch Model, Jang Hyung Cho, Ahmed Elshahat
Faculty Publications
Forecasting equity volatility was thoroughly investigated during the past three decades. The majority based their forecasts on the dynamics of the underlying equity time series. They helped better understand the dynamics of these time series and understand different aspects of volatility. Other models went a step further to include the effect of news announcement on equity volatility. The vast majority ignored the effect of macroeconomic variable or the state of the economy. This paper proposes a volatility-forecasting model that accounts for effect of fundamental macroeconomic variables that reflect the state of the economy. The explanatory variables used measure the stage …
The Day After Tomorrow: A Survey Of How Gulf Coast State Utility Commissions And Utilities Are Preparing For Future Storms, Katherine Carey
The Day After Tomorrow: A Survey Of How Gulf Coast State Utility Commissions And Utilities Are Preparing For Future Storms, Katherine Carey
Sabin Center for Climate Change Law
With widespread outages caused by devastating natural disasters such as Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Ike in the nation’s recent memory, the public wants to know that the electric utility industry is prepared to withstand and respond to the storms of the future. But is the industry prepared? The government’s role in regulating the electric utility industry makes it impossible to properly analyze why industry players are prepared or unprepared without looking at the actions and decisions of the state regulatory officials. The industry’s actions are inherently tied to the regulations it is required to follow and the costs it is …
Should A Bankruptcy Court Consider A Debtor’S Social Security Income When Determining Whether His Chapter 13 Plan Is Feasible?, Sarah M. Roe
Should A Bankruptcy Court Consider A Debtor’S Social Security Income When Determining Whether His Chapter 13 Plan Is Feasible?, Sarah M. Roe
Bankruptcy Research Library
(Excerpt)
Chapter 13 of the Bankruptcy Code provides individuals the opportunity to reorganize their debt obligations. This adjustment chapter permits an individual debtor to keep his nonexempt assets but requires that he make payments for three to five years through a repayment plan. During this repayment period, the individual debtor uses his disposable income to fulfill his debts. After all of the payments are made to creditors, the debtor receives a discharge.
If the trustee or an unsecured creditor objects to the plan, a court must determine if the plan can fulfill the unsecured claim and allow the debtor’s “projected …
The Effects Of Sharing The Consequences Of Tax Evasion And Regret Salience On Taxpayer Compliance, William Douglas Brink
The Effects Of Sharing The Consequences Of Tax Evasion And Regret Salience On Taxpayer Compliance, William Douglas Brink
Theses and Dissertations
This study examines whether sharing the potential tax savings and risk of penalties associated with tax evasion with another individual and the anticipation of potential regret from an adverse IRS audit affect an individual decision maker's propensity to evade taxes. Research on risky decision making suggests that individuals will be less likely to evade taxes when the benefits and costs of evasion are shared, while research on ethical decision making suggests that individuals will be more likely to evade taxes when the benefits of evasion are shared with another individual. Using experimental data obtained from 147 experienced taxpayers throughout the …
Playing At History: Resurrection Man And Historiographic Game Design, Jessica Ethel Tompkins
Playing At History: Resurrection Man And Historiographic Game Design, Jessica Ethel Tompkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates historical representation in video games and argues that two types dominate: 1) a semantic approach that engages players with the past via visual expressions; and 2) a cause and effect simulation approach that positions players in the context of historically situated possibilities. However, The author posits that the expressive power of video game worlds and mechanics afford deeper potentials for historical engagements. The author pursues a game design approach that takes seriously representations of the past and player inquiry at the forefront of the experience.
The historically contextualized video game is frequently discussed in the context of …
