Maritime transportation is the backbone of today´s world trade and therefore there special attention should be paid to all subjects concerning this mode of transportation. It is also necessary to complement maritime transportation by other modes, such as rail and/or truck (road). This thesis deals with the problems of maritime transportation and provides the summary of recent developments, trends and statistics mainly on Transatlantic maritime routes (Europe to U.S.). Besides maritime transportation, this thesis also reviews the trends and statistics of rail and truck (road) transportation in U.S. and Europe.

The second part of thesis seeks to create a mathematical …

The Problem Of Using Evil Against The Possible Existence Of God, Juan Rafael Torres Jan 2014

The Problem Of Using Evil Against The Possible Existence Of God, Juan Rafael Torres

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

This thesis has two modules, which entail two different approaches about the problem of evil. In module one, which consists of chapters one and two, I consider the difficulties of defining `evil' and the case against the `logical problem of evil' respectively. Module two is a phenomenological and skeptical approach to the problem of evil. Specifically, it is a response to those that do not agree with Plantinga's arguments and it is a critique of the traditional paradigms about God, evil and ethics. For instance, I reject the so called category of "natural evils" and I categorize `evil' as a …

An Experimental Investigation Of The Cooling Channel Geometry Effects On The Internal Forced Convection Of Liquid Methane, Adrian Trejo Jan 2014

An Experimental Investigation Of The Cooling Channel Geometry Effects On The Internal Forced Convection Of Liquid Methane, Adrian Trejo

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Rocket engine fuel alternatives have been an area of discussion for use in high performance engines and deep spaceflight missions. In particular, LCH4 has showed promise as an alternative option in regeneratively cooled rocket engines due to its non-toxic nature, similar storage temperatures to liquid oxygen, and its potential as an in situ resource. However, data pertaining to the heat transfer characteristics of LCH4 is limited. For this reason, a High Heat Transfer Test Facility (HHTTF) at the University of Texas at El Paso's (UTEP) Center for Space Exploration Technology and Research has been developed for the purpose of flowing …

Father Attachment Predicts Adolescent Girls' Social And Emotional Development, Reena Sandhu Jan 2014

Father Attachment Predicts Adolescent Girls' Social And Emotional Development, Reena Sandhu

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The principle focus of research on parental attachment and involvement has been about mothers and their young children, with the role of fathers relatively neglected. In addition, the study of father–child relational processes during the adolescent period has been meager, compared to mother–child influences during adolescence. The few studies on father–adolescent relationships rarely focused on the father–daughter attachment bond. This research study aimed primarily to consider the nature of father attachment on the social and emotional development of adolescent girls. The variables of interest were Father Attachment, Social Problems, Social Competence, and Internalizing Behavioral Problems, as perceived by adolescent girls. …

Integrating Two-Photon Microscopy And Cryo-Electron Microscopy For Studying The Interaction Of Caféteria Roenbergensis And Crov, Seyedmohammadali Aghvami Jan 2014

Integrating Two-Photon Microscopy And Cryo-Electron Microscopy For Studying The Interaction Of Caféteria Roenbergensis And Crov, Seyedmohammadali Aghvami

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cafeteria roenbergensis (Cro) is a marine zooplankton; its voracious appetite plays a significant role in regulating bacteria populations. The giant virus that lives within Cro, known as Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CroV), has an important effect on the mortality of Cro populations. Although viral infections are extremely abundant in oceans, the complete procedure of the infection is still unknown. We study the infection process of Cro by CroV to find out whether the initial contact is through phagocytosis or CroV penetrating the host cell membrane directly. Cro is a moving at speed in the range of 10-100 um/s, therefore, there are …

Grounded theory methodology was used to analyze qualitative research data collected from participant volunteers and facilitators. A …

Examining The Role Of Attention In Steering Using A Dual Task Paradigm, Venkata Naga Pradeep Ambati Jan 2014

Examining The Role Of Attention In Steering Using A Dual Task Paradigm, Venkata Naga Pradeep Ambati

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Changing the direction of locomotion, often referred to as "steering", is an integral component of human locomotion. Steering requires maintaining dynamic balance while translating and rotating the body in the new travel direction. Given the level of sensation thought to be involved in sub serving goal directed modifications in steering, it is highly likely that steering control may require attention. Since attention resources decline with increasing age, we may see the influence of age on steering performance when attention resources are limited. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the role of attention in steering using a dual task paradigm in …

From Alarm To Action: Closing The Gap Between Belief And Behavior In Response To Climate Change, Kathryn Laing Doherty Jan 2014

From Alarm To Action: Closing The Gap Between Belief And Behavior In Response To Climate Change, Kathryn Laing Doherty

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The degree to which the climate continues to change will largely be determined by choices made by individuals and nations regarding greenhouse gas emissions. Many Americans engage in energy conservation actions. But, the political will in the United States to adopt emissions reduction policies is unlikely to exist without public demand. Therefore, public mitigation actions of individuals (e.g., contacting elected officials in support of emissions reduction) are critical to induce legislative response. The majority of individuals who are most concerned about climate change (the “Alarmed” segment) do not engage in public mitigation actions, but some do. The purpose of this …

A Block Precondtioner For A Mixed Finite Element Method For Biot;S Equations, Maranda Lee Bean Jan 2014

A Block Precondtioner For A Mixed Finite Element Method For Biot;S Equations, Maranda Lee Bean

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

In this Thesis, we explore the solution methods for the linear system resulting from a mixed finite element method applied to the Biot's consolidation model. This model describes the coupled interactions between a porous solid and the fluid contained within it. Specifically, we use a method developed by Yi [Numer. Methods for PDEs, 29(5), pp. 1749-1777] that expands Biot's system to include fluid pressure, solid displacement, fluid flux and total stress as primary unknowns.

As the resulting linear system is a large, sparse, saddle point system, we attempt to solve this system via a Schur complement preconditioned iterative method. Using …

Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin Jan 2014

Numerical Investigation Of Impact Of Relative Humidity On Droplet Accumulation And Film Cooling, Luz Irene Bugarin

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

During the summer, high inlet temperatures affect the power output of gas turbine systems. Evaporative coolers have gained popularity as an inlet cooling method for these systems. Wet compression has been one of the common evaporative cooling methods implemented to increase power output of gas turbine systems due to its simple installation and low cost. This process involves injection of water droplets into the continuous phase of compressor to reduce the temperature of the flow entering the compressor and in turn increase the power output of the whole gas turbine system. This study focused on a single stage rotor-stator compressor …

Impacts Of Transportation Infrastructure Proximity And Accessibility On Real Property Values, Arturo Bujanda Jan 2014

Impacts Of Transportation Infrastructure Proximity And Accessibility On Real Property Values, Arturo Bujanda

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Investments in public infrastructure such as highways, airports, mass transit, and stadiums can increase adjacent property values, generating a value premium for private developers and adjacent property owners. A portion of this value can be "captured" as public revenue via property taxes to assist financing such improvements. States and local governments aim to anticipate and capture the economic value created by transportation accessibility. While value capture (VC) represents an opportunity for regional agencies to recapture some transportation infrastructure costs, it is not clear how much value is added by the infrastructure in a particular region. This research applies geographic weighted …

Message Matters: Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Increase Household Hazardous Waste Program Participation, Amy Dyer Cabaniss Jan 2014

Message Matters: Application Of The Theory Of Planned Behavior To Increase Household Hazardous Waste Program Participation, Amy Dyer Cabaniss

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Removing household hazardous waste (HHW) from the municipal solid waste stream is important to protect health, safety and the environment. Communities across the U.S. separate HHW from regular trash for disposal with hazardous waste, however nationally, participation rates are low with only five to ten percent of households estimated to participate in any given collection. This two-part study used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to understand individuals’ beliefs and attitudes toward HHW collections, and to develop a print message intervention to increase participation. In Study 1, respondents (N = 983) completed a survey administered to homeowners in the Connecticut …

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron Jan 2014

Modeling Tidally Driven Coulomb Failure At Strike-Slip Linea On Europa, Marissa Elizabeth Cameron

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The surface of Europa is crosscut by a dense network of fractures and there are many candidate faults for studying past tectonic activity. To better understand the role of tidal stress sources and implications for faulting on Europa, we investigate the relationship between shear and normal stresses at four fault zones: Agenor Linea, Rhadamanthys Linea, Conamara Chaos (Agave/Asterius Linea), and Astypalaea Linea, offering a unique comparison of geological activity of fractures residing in geographically diverse locations of Europa. Assuming tidal diurnal and non-synchronous rotation (NSR) stresses are the primary mechanisms for strike-slip tectonism, here we investigate the mechanics of Coulomb …

Qos Measurement Of Workflow-Based Web Service Compositions Using Colored Petri Net, Hossein Nematzadeh, Homayun Motameni, Radziah Mohamad, Zahra Nematzadeh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

Workflow-based web service compositions (WB-WSCs) is one of the main composition categories in service oriented architecture (SOA). Eflow, polymorphic process model (PPM), and business process execution language (BPEL) are the main techniques of the category of WB-WSCs. Due to maturity of web services, measuring the quality of composite web services being developed by different techniques becomes one of the most important challenges in today's web environments. Business should try to provide good quality regarding the customers' requirements to a composed web service. Thus, quality of service (QoS) which refers to nonfunctional parameters is important to be measured since the quality …

Abrasive Teachers And Principal Response ; A Mixed-Methods Exploration Of Administrative Decisions Regarding Teachers Who Bully Students, James Clayton Weller

Dissertations

Problem and Purpose. The American K-12 school principal is responsible for providing a learning environment that is physically and emotionally safe. An abrasive teacher who displays bullying behaviors towards students is a threat to that environment, impeding student academic progress and decreasing student perceptions of safety. Principals intervene, with risk to themselves. This study sought to understand principal intervention by: (a) estimating the prevalence of abrasive teachers, (b) asking how principals identify abrasive teachers, (c) classifying situational elements that enhance or inhibit the principal’s motivation to intervene, (d) exploring the interventions principals used, (e) examining the effects those interventions had …

Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton Jan 2014

Frequency Selective Surfaces For Extreme Applications, Jay Houston Barton

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

It is known that for high-power microwaves and other extreme environments, the use of resonant metallic elements in frequency selective surfaces can be problematic. The solution developed within this Dissertation to solve these problems was to use guided-mode resonance phenomenon to create all-dielectric frequency selective surfaces that could survive these extreme environments.

To fully understand how these devices work, three different computational electromagnetic methods are formulated and implemented. The formulation of these methods start with the differential form of Maxwellâ??s equation and are derived all the way down to the final simulation state. This is done sequentially and all the …

Crafting A Narrative For The Red State Option, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard Jan 2014

Crafting A Narrative For The Red State Option, Elizabeth Weeks Leonard

Scholarly Works

This Article examines the current state of play following the Supreme Court's decision in NFIB v. Sebelius to allow states the option of expanding their Medicaid programs in accordance with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA). Holding that mandatory expansion was unconstitutionally coercive, the Court created the Red State Option. Despite the enormously generous federal financial support for Medicaid expansion, close to half of the states have declined. At the same time, at least eight Republican-led states have crossed Tea Party lines to accept federal funding for expansion. Drawing lessons from these states, including Arkansas, Arizona, Michigan, and …

Ignorance, Harm, And The Regulation Of Performance-Enhancing Substances, Lisa Milot Jan 2014

Ignorance, Harm, And The Regulation Of Performance-Enhancing Substances, Lisa Milot

Scholarly Works

There is a disconnect between how legal and sporting authorities, on the one hand, and many elite athletes, on the other, view the use of performance-enhancing substances. While official and popular narratives portray the use of these substances as isolated examples of deviant behavior, to the elite athletes who daily push their bodies beyond societally normal limits of pain and risk, enhancement is oftentimes an accepted part of the job. As a result, efforts to regulate and detect athletes’ use of these substances have consistently captured only a small fraction of the use that exists.

This Article describes the ways …

Disaggregative Mechanisms: The New Frontier Of Mass-Claims Resolution Without Class Actions, Jaime Dodge Jan 2014

Disaggregative Mechanisms: The New Frontier Of Mass-Claims Resolution Without Class Actions, Jaime Dodge

Scholarly Works

Aggregation has long been viewed as the primary if not sole vehicle for mass claims resolution. For a half-century, scholars have consistently viewed the consolidated litigation of similar claims through joinder, class actions and more recently multi-district litigation as the only mechanism for efficiently resolving mass claims. In this Article, I challenge that long-standing and fundamental conception. The Article seeks to reconceptualize our understanding of mass claims resolution, arguing that we are witnessing the birth of a second, unexplored branch of mass claims resolution mechanisms — which I term “disaggregative” dispute resolution systems because they lack the traditional aggregation of …

Remanding Multidistrict Litigation, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch Jan 2014

Remanding Multidistrict Litigation, Elizabeth Chamblee Burch

Scholarly Works

Multidistrict litigation has frequently been described as a “black hole” because transfer is typically a one-way ticket. The numbers lend truth to this proposition. As of 2010, the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation remanded only 3.425% of cases to their original districts. That number dwindled to 3.1% in 2012, and to a scant 2.9% in 2013. Retaining cases in hopes of forcing a global settlement can cause a constellation of complications. These concerns range from procedural justice issues over selecting a forum and correcting error, to substantive concerns about fidelity to state laws, to undermining democratic participation ideals fulfilled through …

The Great Writ In The Peach State: Georgia Habeas Corpus, 1865-1965, Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Scholarly Works

There is a plenitude of scholarly writing on the Great Writ of Habeas Corpus, which is universally recognized as "one of the decisively differentiating factors between our democracy and totalitarian governments."' The overwhelming majority of these scholarly publications are concerned with the writ of habeas corpus as administered in the federal court system. There are far fewer scholarly publications on the writ of habeas corpus as administered in the courts of the State of Georgia, and most of these works are concerned with Georgia habeas corpus as a state postconviction remedy, past and present. Only one scholarly piece, a law …

The Problem Of Abusive Related-Partner Allocations, Gregg D. Polsky, Emily Cauble Jan 2014

The Problem Of Abusive Related-Partner Allocations, Gregg D. Polsky, Emily Cauble

Scholarly Works

This Article highlights a flaw in the existing rules regarding partnership tax allocations that has not yet received sufficient attention by existing literature. Namely, the partnership tax allocation rules are implicitly premised on the assumption that partners are unrelated and, thus, transact with each other at arm’s length. As a result, related partners can and do devise tax allocation schemes that exploit the gap in the current partnership tax allocation rules to achieve unwarranted tax savings.

This Article proposes to end this abuse by disallowing special allocations among related partners. Under the proposal, allocations among related partners would be required …

Caffeine And Human Perception Of Time, Trevor Fry Jan 2014

Caffeine And Human Perception Of Time, Trevor Fry

EWU Masters Thesis Collection

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of caffeine on several components of time perception in an attention-demanding task. Review of the current literature shows that the rhythm of the brain's internal clock, controlled by the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), which is believed to mediate the perception of short durations, is sensitive to a variety of stimuli including stimulants. This study expands on previous research on the effect of caffeine on prospective time estimation by having participants estimate multiple short durations while completing a cognitively complex time estimation task involving math. The study included a moderate dose caffeine …

Juvenile Crisis Intervention Teams (Cits): A Qualitative Description Of Current Programs, Annabelle V. Douglas, Arthur J. Lurigio Jan 2014

Juvenile Crisis Intervention Teams (Cits): A Qualitative Description Of Current Programs, Annabelle V. Douglas, Arthur J. Lurigio

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

This article describes one of the newest, most specialised law enforcement programmes in the United States: Crisis Intervention Teams (CITs) for youth with mental illness. In response to the fragmentation of behavioural healthcare services in the educational, juvenile justice and mental health systems, JuvenileCITs (J-CITs) have been implemented in a handful of jurisdictions to serve as an intervention for troubled and troublesome adolescents in need of mental health care. Information about J-CITs is limited; little has been written about such programmes, and no published studies have examined their effectiveness. Hence the present study was undertaken to identify all of the …

A Closer Look At Self-Esteem, Perceived Social Support, And Coping Strategy: A Prospective Study Of Depressive Symptomatology Across The Transition To College, Catherine Lee, Daniel A. Dickson, Colleen S. Conley, Grayson N. Holmbeck

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The first year of college is a significant life transition, which is often characterized by stress and may contribute to the development or exacerbation of depressive symptoms. Due to the considerable negative outcomes that are associated with depressive symptoms across the lifespan, it is important to understand the mechanisms and pathways through which depressive symptoms arise. This prospective study examines the mediating and moderating roles of perceived social support and disengagement coping on the association between self-esteem and depressive symptomatology in a sample of 1,118 first-year college students. Results of longitudinal cross-lagged path analyses indicate that self-esteem predicts depressive symptomatology …

Type A Behavior And Savoring Among College Undergraduates: Enjoy Achievements Now—Not Later, Fred B. Bryant, Paul R. Yarnold Jan 2014

Type A Behavior And Savoring Among College Undergraduates: Enjoy Achievements Now—Not Later, Fred B. Bryant, Paul R. Yarnold

Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Recent research tested the a priori hypothesis that Type A Behavior (TAB) undermines enjoyment of leisure time, and that this effect is mediated by savoring responses which hamper enjoyment.1 Findings suggested that the hypothesized A-B differences in savoring reflect differences in perfectionism rather than in time urgency. The present study uses the same sample to compare 117 extreme Type A and 131 extreme B undergraduates on ten dimensions of savoring assessed for a performance-related stimulus. Findings revealed Type As focus on how proud they are and impressed others are, but are only moderately to weakly involved in actively storing positive …
