International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Saturday, July 26, 2014:

Introduction: Interhospital transfer of critically ill patients between community hospitals and tertiary care centers are common within the United States. Medicare data from 2005, identifies an interfacility critical care transfer volume of 47,820 (Iwashyna et al, 2009). Approximately 4.5% of all critical care patient admissions to community hospitals experiences an interhospital critical care transfer. The process for interhopsital transfers is not optimized for favorable patient outcomes and is a significant problem to be addressed (Bosk, Vienot and Iwashyna, 2011). Rapid access to tertiary care is paramount to the patient experiencing a time sensitive …

An Inquiry Into The Aviation Management Education Paradigm Shift, Matthew P. Earnhardt, Jason M. Newcomer, Daryl V. Watkins, James W. Marion Nov 2014

An Inquiry Into The Aviation Management Education Paradigm Shift, Matthew P. Earnhardt, Jason M. Newcomer, Daryl V. Watkins, James W. Marion

International Journal of Aviation, Aeronautics, and Aerospace

Working adults with four-year degrees from accredited colleges or universities earn, on average, almost three times more than individuals without a degree. This pay gap led Newcomer and his colleagues to study attitudes of aviation and aerospace managers towards education. That study found that managers valued education in new hires, even though they did not deem it critical to their own positions. That finding indicated a potential paradigm shift towards the perceived value of education in the industry.

In the current qualitative, phenomenological research, we interviewed 14 managers from various capacities within the aviation and aerospace industries to determine the …

Freedom, Benefit And Understanding: Reflections On Laurence Claus's Critique Of Authority, John M. Finnis Nov 2014

Freedom, Benefit And Understanding: Reflections On Laurence Claus's Critique Of Authority, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

Written for a symposium in the University of San Diego Law School in September 2013 on Laurence Claus, Law’s Evolution and Human Understanding (New York: Oxford University Press, 2012), this article appears in the final issue of volume 52 of the San Diego Law Review. With new illustrations and considerations suggested by the book, the article argues for a number of theses: “Because I/we say so” is never a reasonable ground or formulation of authoritative acts such as enactments or parental or other orders. The moral authority of rule makers is never peremptory in a binary (all or nothing) as …

Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez Nov 2014

Word Recognition In Noise Among Young And Older Listeners: A Combined Behavioral And Electrophysiological Study, Victoria Ann Williams-Sanchez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Word recognition is based on the complex interplay of bottom up processing of acoustic input and corresponding top-down processing based on linguistic redundancies (i.e., contextual cues). Friedrich and Kotz (2007) investigated the timeline of integrating top-down and bottom-up processes among young adults with normal hearing using sentences presented in quiet. As a follow-up study, also with young adults with normal hearing (Experiment 1 of this dissertation), we used sentences embedded in multi-talker background noise and found similar results to Friedrich and Kotz (2007); but, with the use of principal component analysis (PCA) unveiled additional effects of phonological and semantic integration …

Iterative Solutions To The Steady-State Density Matrix For Optomechanical Systems, P. D. Nation, J. R. Johansson, M. P. Blencowe, A. J. Rimberg Nov 2014

Iterative Solutions To The Steady-State Density Matrix For Optomechanical Systems, P. D. Nation, J. R. Johansson, M. P. Blencowe, A. J. Rimberg

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present a sparse matrix permutation from graph theory that gives stable incomplete Lower- Upper (LU) preconditioners necessary for iterative solutions to the steady state density matrix for quantum optomechanical systems. This reordering is efficient, adding little overhead to the computation, and results in a marked reduction in both memory and runtime requirements compared to other solution methods, with performance gains increasing with system size. Either of these benchmarks can be tuned via the preconditioner accuracy and solution tolerance. This reordering optimizes the condition number of the approximate inverse, and is the only method found to be stable at large …
