Developments Of Gigapixel Microscopy, Siyuan Dong Nov 2014

Developments Of Gigapixel Microscopy, Siyuan Dong

Master's Theses

Fourier ptychographic (FP) imaging is a recently developed technique to get high-resolution high-throughput imaging. FP iteratively stitches together many variably illuminated, low-resolution intensity images in the Fourier space to expand the frequency passband and recover a high-resolution sample image.

There are several latest developments of the Fourier ptychographic imaging scheme. FP scheme can be used as adaptive imaging method. An image-quality metric is defined as a guide star for the optimization process, and system corrections are then performed to maximize such a guide star. The adaptive FP scheme performs system correction by modifying the complex transfer function in the recovery …

Eagles Circle The Drum, Mark Shaw Nov 2014

Eagles Circle The Drum, Mark Shaw

Theses

Mark Shaw’s Eagles Circle the Drum: A Novel My thesis, for the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of Missouri—St. Louis, is a Native American Literary Novel. When Jimmy Moses—a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Nation—dies, his mother chooses to have a Christian funeral instead of an American Indian burial ceremony. The reservation community becomes upset, particularly Johnny Bear Moses, her son and Jimmy’s older brother. The novel shifts between various points of view, including Reylene Fisherman, the mother; Johnny Bear; and his daughter, Akasha. These three major characters represent a different opinion of creed and …

Testing Gene-Environment Interactions In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Chongzhi Di, Li Hsu, Charles Kooperberg, Alex Reiner, Ross Prentice Nov 2014

Testing Gene-Environment Interactions In The Presence Of Measurement Error, Chongzhi Di, Li Hsu, Charles Kooperberg, Alex Reiner, Ross Prentice

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Complex diseases result from an interplay between genetic and environmental risk factors, and it is of great interest to study the gene-environment interaction (GxE) to understand the etiology of complex diseases. Recent developments in genetics field allows one to study GxE systematically. However, one difficulty with GxE arises from the fact that environmental exposures are often measured with error. In this paper, we focus on testing GxE when the environmental exposure E is subject to measurement error. Surprisingly, contrast to the well-established results that the naive test ignoring measurement error is valid in testing the main effects, we find that …

Flexible And Scalable Genotyping-By-Sequencing Strategies For Population Studies, Christopher Heffelfinger, Christopher A. Fragoso, Maria A. Moreno, John D. Overton, John P. Mottinger, Hongyu Zhao, Joe Tohme, Stephen L. Dellaporta Nov 2014

Flexible And Scalable Genotyping-By-Sequencing Strategies For Population Studies, Christopher Heffelfinger, Christopher A. Fragoso, Maria A. Moreno, John D. Overton, John P. Mottinger, Hongyu Zhao, Joe Tohme, Stephen L. Dellaporta

Cell and Molecular Biology Faculty Publications

Background: Many areas critical to agricultural production and research, such as the breeding and trait mapping in plants and livestock, require robust and scalable genotyping platforms. Genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) is a one such method highly suited to non-human organisms. In the GBS protocol, genomic DNA is fractionated via restriction digest, then reduced representation is achieved through size selection. Since many restriction sites are conserved across a species, the sequenced portion of the genome is highly consistent within a population. This makes the GBS protocol highly suited for experiments that require surveying large numbers of markers within a population, such as those …

September 2014 Soil-Vapor Monitoring Results, Solid Waste Management Unit 76, Mixed Waste Landfill, Sandia National Laboratories, U.S. Department Of Energy Nov 2014

September 2014 Soil-Vapor Monitoring Results, Solid Waste Management Unit 76, Mixed Waste Landfill, Sandia National Laboratories, U.S. Department Of Energy

SWMU 76 - Mixed Waste Landfill - Corrective Action

The Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE) and Sandia Corporation (Sandia) implemented corrective measures at solid waste management unit (SWMU) 76 in accordance with the requirements of the Permit; an April 2004 Compliance Order on Consent between NMED, DOE, and Sandia; and the plans approved by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMED). On January 8, 2014, NMED approved a long-term monitoring and maintenance plan (LTMMP) for SWMU 76. DOE and Sandia have implemented the approved LTMMP, maintaining the controls established through the corrective measures. SWMU 76, known as the Mixed Waste Landfill (MWL), is a 2.6-acre site at Sandia …

Bibliotherapy: An Approach To Treating Mental Illness In The Classroom, Erin M. Curry Nov 2014

Bibliotherapy: An Approach To Treating Mental Illness In The Classroom, Erin M. Curry

Senior Honors Theses

The prevalence of adolescent mental illness has increased at an alarming rate over the past two decades. Due to a lack of accessible mental health care and the stigmatization of mental illness, parents of children with these disorders are often reluctant to seek help. These children often resort to negative self-coping methods among which include substance abuse, violence, and suicide. These negative self-coping methods have a harmful, lasting impact on the individual as well as the surrounding community.

Bibliotherapy, which harnesses the meditative power of books, can teach helpful coping skills to students with mental illness. When effectively utilized in …

Medicaid Expansions & Public Health Spending: Cross-Subsidies, Complementarities, And Crowd-Out, Glen P. Mays Nov 2014

Medicaid Expansions & Public Health Spending: Cross-Subsidies, Complementarities, And Crowd-Out, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

In this paper we estimate the causal impact of state Medicaid enrollment expansions and expenditures on state and local resources allocated to other public health programs and services. Using a quasi-experimental design with instrumental variables estimation, we find evidence that increased Medicaid spending leads to reduced governmental spending on other public health services, consistent with a crowd-out effect. Over 10 years, such crowd-out has the potential to diminish the health status improvements generated through health insurance coverage expansions.

Pcp-Ml: Protein Characterization Package For Machine Learning, Jesse Eickholt, Zheng Wang Nov 2014

Pcp-Ml: Protein Characterization Package For Machine Learning, Jesse Eickholt, Zheng Wang

Faculty Publications

Background: Machine Learning (ML) has a number of demonstrated applications in protein prediction tasks such as protein structure prediction. To speed further development of machine learning based tools and their release to the community, we have developed a package which characterizes several aspects of a protein commonly used for protein prediction tasks with machine learning.

Findings: A number of software libraries and modules exist for handling protein related data. The package we present in this work, PCP-ML, is unique in its small footprint and emphasis on machine learning. Its primary focus is on characterizing various aspects of a …

A Novel Role For Nf-Κb In Proximal T Cell Signaling, Crystina Bronk Watson Nov 2014

A Novel Role For Nf-Κb In Proximal T Cell Signaling, Crystina Bronk Watson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The interrogation of T cell signaling over the past fifty years has led to the discovery of amazingly intricate cascade networks and elaborate descriptions of individual proteins' domains and functions. A complex landscape has been rendered in which proteins relay messages from the extracellular ligation of the TCR by a cognate peptide loaded MHC via changes in sub-cellular location, phosphorylation, and binding affinities and partners to enact nuclear localization of three key transcription factors required for cellular effector function and proliferation: AP-1, NF-AT, and NF-κB. Dogma has favored activation of each of these transcription regulating elements to be a linear …
