Beyond Credentialing In Physician Selection: Application Of An Instrument That Measures Behavioral Aptitude, Edgar Staren Md, Phd, Mba, Susan Hirt Ph.D., Doug Rath M.A.

Patient Experience Journal

This article explores the idea that the assessment of candidates for the role of physician caregiver can be enhanced by evaluating their inter-personal and behavioral aptitude as well as their clinical skills. The objective of this work was to determine whether results of a structured interview correlate to performance ratings for physicians. Two data sets were collected: a structured aptitude assessment for physicians (the Physician Interview) and job performance data for physicians. Analysis of performance data allowed categorization of the physicians into three groups: top performers, contrast performers, and neither. The two data sets were then analyzed to assess the …

Microstratigraphic Logging Of Calcite Fabrics In Speleothems As Tool For Palaeoclimate Studies, Silvia Frisia Nov 2014

Microstratigraphic Logging Of Calcite Fabrics In Speleothems As Tool For Palaeoclimate Studies, Silvia Frisia

International Journal of Speleology

The systematic documentation of calcite fabrics in stalagmites and flowstones provides robustness to palaeoclimate interpretation based on geochemical proxies, but it has been neglected because it is difficult to transform crystal morphologies into numerical values, and construct fabric time series. Here, general criteria that allow for coding fabrics of calcite composing stalagmites and flowstones is provided. Being based on known models of fabric development, the coding ascribes sequential numbers to each fabric, which reflect climate-related parameters, such as changes in drip rate variability, bio-mediation or diagenetic modifications. Acronyms are proposed for Columnar types, Dendritic, Micrite, Microsparite and Mosaic fabrics, whose …

Case Report Posters

History: A 67 year-old male with a one year history of melanoma complained of headaches 1-2 weeks prior to admission to an acute care hospital with left sided hemiplegia and dysarthria. A head CT scan revealed an intracerebral hematoma and a lesion suspicious for metastasis within the right parietal lobe. A right parietal craniotomy, evacuation of the hematoma and resection of the brain tumor were performed and the pathology revealed metastatic melanoma. Discussion: The patient received 18, 60-75 minute physical therapy sessions over a span of 21 days while in the inpatient rehabilitation unit. This case study utilized many essential …

Outpatient Physical Therapy Management Of A Patient Three Months Following Left Shoulder Arthroscopic Repair Of A Type-Ii Slap Lesion: A Case Report, Charles Dowd

Case Report Posters

Background: Research demonstrates a drastic increase in the prevalence of type-II superior labral anterior-posterior (SLAP) lesion repairs, and its surgical correction has become the favored method of treatment, because of its ability to effectively improve quality of life (QOL). A type-II SLAP lesion consists of fraying and degenerative changes to the superior labrum, in an anterior to posterior direction, with the biceps tendon detached from the glenoid. Purpose: Document the examination, evaluation, and plan of care (POC) concerning a patient that was referred to physical therapy (PT) three months following the surgical correction of a type-II SLAP lesion.

Preparing For Life In A Digital Age: The Iea International Computer And Information Literacy Study 2013 International Report, Julian Fraillon, John Ainley, Wolfram Schulz, Tim Friedman, Eveline Gebhardt

ICT - Digital Literacy

The International Computer and Information Literacy Study (ICILS) studied the extent to which young people have developed computer and information literacy (CIL) to support their capacity to participate in the digital age. ICILS is a response to the increasing use of information and communication technology (ICT) in modern society and the need for citizens to develop relevant skills in order to participate effectively in the digital age. It also addresses the necessity for policymakers and education systems to have a better understanding of the contexts and outcomes of CIL-related education programs in their countries. ICILS is the first crossnational study …

A Closer Look At The Impact Of Quantitative Easing On The Capital Markets: Garch Analysis Of The Exchange Traded Funds Market, Nicholas R. Duafala

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper analyzes the effects of quantitative easing (QE) on the capital markets by modeling exchange traded funds (ETFs) returns using a generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) methodology. The results show that the 10-Year Treasury yields are significant in the returns of some sectors of the economy more so than others, and the Federal Funds Futures trading volume is significant in all ETFs return volatility. The implications of these results not only provide information about the reaction of the ETF market and QE, but also provide insight for developing investment strategies.

The Dynamics Of Medicaid & Public Health Spending: Implications For Aca Implementation, Glen P. Mays Nov 2014

The Dynamics Of Medicaid & Public Health Spending: Implications For Aca Implementation, Glen P. Mays

Health Management and Policy Presentations

We estimate the dynamics and interactions of governmental spending on Medicaid and other public health services in all 50 states over a 15 year period. Using a quasi-experimental design with instrumental variables estimation, we find evidence that increased Medicaid spending leads to reduced governmental spending on other public health services, consistent with a crowd-out effect. Over 10 years, such crowd-out has the potential to diminish the health status improvements generated through health insurance coverage expansions.

Liminality And Using Comedy To Critique The Politically Correct Generation, Kyler D. Cook

Research Papers

This research report takes an in depth look at the ways in which Keegan Michael Key and Jordan Peele, two biracial sketch comedians, are changing the way that we look at comedy, and the way that we look at ourselves. By investigating what biracial identities are able to accomplish, and by looking at the effect of the political correctness generation we live in, this research report investigates what is funny, and where is the line.

Since the recognition that allopatric speciation can be induced by large-scale reconfigurations of the landscape that isolate formerly continuous populations, such as the separation of continents by plate tectonics, the uplift of mountains or the formation of large rivers, landscape change has been viewed as a primary driver of biological diversification. This process is referred to in biogeography as vicariance. In the most species-rich region of the world, the Neotropics, the sundering of populations associated with the Andean uplift is ascribed this principal role in speciation. An alternative model posits that rather …

Population Genetics Of Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus Maritimus) Subspecies Along The Gulf Of Mexico, Stefan Woltmann, Philip C. Stouffer, Christine M.Bergeon Burns, Mark S. Woodrey, Mollie F. Cashner, Sabrina S. Taylor Nov 2014

Population Genetics Of Seaside Sparrow (Ammodramus Maritimus) Subspecies Along The Gulf Of Mexico, Stefan Woltmann, Philip C. Stouffer, Christine M.Bergeon Burns, Mark S. Woodrey, Mollie F. Cashner, Sabrina S. Taylor

Faculty Publications

Seaside Sparrows (Ammodramus maritimus) along the Gulf of Mexico are currently recognized as four subspecies, including taxa in Florida (A. m. juncicola and A. m. peninsulae) and southern Texas (Ammodramus m. sennetti), plus a widespread taxon between them (A. m. fisheri). We examined population genetic structure of this ''Gulf Coast'' clade using microsatellite and mtDNA data. Results of Bayesian analyses (STRUCTURE, GENELAND) of microsatellite data from nine locations do not entirely align with current subspecific taxonomy. Ammodramus m. sennetti from southern Texas is significantly differentiated from all other populations, but we found evidence of an admixture zone with A. m. …

Presence Of Semi-Aquatic Turtles In Indianapolis Golf Course Ponds, Melissa Anne Jones Nov 2014

Presence Of Semi-Aquatic Turtles In Indianapolis Golf Course Ponds, Melissa Anne Jones

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

The consequences of increasing urbanization in many areas have led to an increase in environmental awareness. Urban green spaces, such as golf courses, can increase biodiversity and serve as valuable wildlife habitats in otherwise inhospitable areas. Golf course ponds have the potential to provide suitable habitats for semi-aquatic turtles in urban areas. Previous research on semi-aquatic turtle inhabitation has been conducted on suburban golf courses. This study investigates the viability of urban Indianapolis golf courses as habitats for semi-aquatic turtles. Golf course ponds show similar turtle occupancy compared to nearby control ponds. However, when compared to a past random pond …
