A Computer Network Model For The Evaluation Of Moving Target Network Defense Mechanisms, Benjamin Fredrick Wheeler Dec 2014

A Computer Network Model For The Evaluation Of Moving Target Network Defense Mechanisms, Benjamin Fredrick Wheeler

Theses

In order to combat the increasing complexity of cyber attacks, a new category of cyber defense called dynamic cyber defense has been the focus of a significant amount of work. Dynamic cyber defense mechanisms aim to protect networks by modifying their attributes in order to confuse would-be attackers. Currently, the majority of the existing mechanisms are purely theoretical and have been the subject of minimal performance analysis. There has also been almost no effort to perform comparative analysis of different techniques. As a result, there is a great need for a method of modeling different mechanisms within a single system …

The Effect Of Optical Brightening Agent (Oba) In Paper And Illumination Intensity On Perceptibility Of Printed Colors, Changlong Yu Dec 2014

The Effect Of Optical Brightening Agent (Oba) In Paper And Illumination Intensity On Perceptibility Of Printed Colors, Changlong Yu

Theses

Widely utilized sanctioned color aims for commercial printing are based on paper substrates without optical brightening agents, also known as OBAs. However, in today's market, more and more paper is manufactured with OBAs. This could be problematic for commercial printers as OBAs influence not only paper conformity, but also the accuracy printed colors. This can lead to color mismatch between proofs and the final prints. Recognizing this condition, the objectives of this research were two-fold: first, to verify the perceived color difference between prints due to the presence of OBAs, and second, to study the perceptibility of color differences caused …

Preserving Han-Ok: Reimaging The Korean Traditional House For Today Using 3d Design, Haiden Park Dec 2014

Preserving Han-Ok: Reimaging The Korean Traditional House For Today Using 3d Design, Haiden Park

Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to preserve the traditional elements of Han-Ok in the modern architecture in Korea. I have integrated traditional Korean design elements into modern architecture. I also solved the problems that the Han-Ok currently faces. This topic is important because a lot of the traditional culture has been disappearing within the current Korean society. Of all the aspects of Korean traditional culture, the Han-Ok, the Korean traditional house itself, is very important. A lot of Korea's culture is represented in the Han-Ok, but people think this type of architecture is unnecessary and uncomfortable, and because …

Reflection, Vijay Chandrasekhar Dec 2014

Reflection, Vijay Chandrasekhar

Theses

"Reflection" is my animated graduate thesis film. The film is 6 minutes and 30 seconds long. The concept for the story was developed with a focus on character driven animation, acting and performance. I wanted to challenge myself animating a character type that I was not familiar with, something that I could not relate to on a personal level. I chose to animate a mother of 2 kids who is about 40 years old. I wanted her to go through a wide range of emotions throughout the film. I wanted it to be a silent film, so I could bring …

Re÷Belief, Raymond Mccarthy Bergeron

Theses

re÷belief, is a 3D Printed, hand crafted, zoetropic short-film that asks if recalling memories can break a cycle. re÷belief is a graduate student produced animated thesis, completed for the MFA in the School of Film and Animation at Rochester Institute of Technology. Much of this film is a personal story that recalls nine very specific instances of my life. These are memories that have repeatedly haunted me throughout my youth and adulthood. The memories regularly reflected times of bliss mixed with sullen, miserable moments.

Ultimately, the story thread focuses on cycles, and choosing 3D printed zoetropes as the metaphor and …

Exploring Cultural Identity: Learning Culture Through Effective Interactive Design, Augie Park Dec 2014

Exploring Cultural Identity: Learning Culture Through Effective Interactive Design, Augie Park

Theses

Culture defines groups of individuals by language, religion, art, or tools. In today's ever growing sector of computers, smart phones, and tablets, mobile technology is used as a means to discover a sense of individuality through wireless devices and essentially the Internet. This is a case study on how to design a better educational app designed to teach culture through visual exploration and user testing. This thesis also explores how design affects behavior through usability. Through an analysis of interdisciplinary subjects, Exploring Cultural Identity aims to provide a visual prototype to teach culture, specifically focusing on Korean art. The goal …

Omnidirectional Control Of The Hexapod Robot Tigerbug, Christopher B. Johnson Dec 2014

Omnidirectional Control Of The Hexapod Robot Tigerbug, Christopher B. Johnson

Theses

TigerBug is a six legged, hexapod robot built and designed by students in the Rochester Institute of Technology's (RIT) Multi Agent Bio-Robotics Laboratory (MABL). TigerBug is comprised of 18 servo motors, 3 degrees of freedom (DOF) per leg, supported by carbon fiber wrapped foam legs placed in a circular pattern around its hexagon shaped body. In order to control such a complex system, much research has been done in the field of kinematics. There exist two derivations of kinematic solutions, forward and inverse. The forward kinematic (FK) solution tends to be much simpler than its inverse kinematic (IK) counterpart. There …

Color Managing For Papers Containing Optical Brightening Agents, R. Scott Millward Dec 2014

Color Managing For Papers Containing Optical Brightening Agents, R. Scott Millward

Theses

The role of a color-managed inkjet proof is to predict and simulate the visual appearance of printed color. The proof-to-print visual match works well under different viewing conditions when the input ICC profile and the output ICC profile, built from characterization datasets, do not contain optical brightening agents (OBA).

OBAs influence printed color when measured for characterization and viewed. These brightening agents absorb UV wavelengths in the illuminant and fluoresce in the blue wavelengths. As more and more OBAs are used in printing paper production, the role of color proofing becomes more difficult. The difference in the amount of the …

Nonprofit Executive Pay As An Agency Problem: Evidence From U.S. Colleges And Universities, Brian D. Galle, David I. Walker Dec 2014

Nonprofit Executive Pay As An Agency Problem: Evidence From U.S. Colleges And Universities, Brian D. Galle, David I. Walker

Faculty Scholarship

We analyze the determinants of the compensation of private college and university presidents from 1999 through 2007. We find that the fraction of institutional revenue derived from current donations is negatively associated with compensation and that presidents of religiously-affiliated institutions receive lower levels of compensation. Looking at the determinants of contributions, we find a negative association between presidential pay and subsequent donations. We interpret these results as consistent with the hypotheses that donors to nonprofits are sensitive to executive pay and that stakeholder outrage plays a role in constraining that pay. We discuss the implications of these findings for the …

Promoting Innovation While Preventing Discrimination: Policy Goals For The Scored Society, Frank Pasquale, Danielle K. Citron Dec 2014

Promoting Innovation While Preventing Discrimination: Policy Goals For The Scored Society, Frank Pasquale, Danielle K. Citron

Faculty Scholarship

There are several normative theories of jurisprudence supporting our critique of the scored society, which complement the social theory and political economy presented in our 2014 article on that topic in the Washington Law Review. This response to Professor Tal Zarsky clarifies our antidiscrimination argument while showing that is only one of many bases for the critique of scoring practices. The concerns raised by Big Data may exceed the capacity of extant legal doctrines. Addressing the potential injustice may require the hard work of legal reform.

Promoting Progress: A Qualitative Analysis Of Creative And Innovative Production, Jessica Silbey Dec 2014

Promoting Progress: A Qualitative Analysis Of Creative And Innovative Production, Jessica Silbey

Faculty Scholarship

This chapter is based on data collected as part of a larger qualitative empirical study based on face-to-face interviews with artists, scientists, engineers, their lawyers, agents and business partners. Broadly, the project involves the collecting and analysis of these interviews to understand how and why the interviewees create and innovate and to make sense of the intersection between intellectual property law and creative and innovative activity from the ground up. This chapter specifically investigates the concept of “progress” as discussed in the interviews. “Promoting progress” is the ostensible goal of the intellectual property protection in the United States, but what …

The Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (Sias) And The Social Phobia Scale (Sps): A Comparison Of Two Short-Form Versions., Thomas A. Fergus, David P. Valentiner, Hyun-Soo Kim, Patrick B. Mcgrath

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

The widespread use of Mattick and Clarke’s (1998) Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS) and Social Phobia Scale (SPS) led two independent groups of researchers to develop short-forms of these measures (Fergus, Valentiner, McGrath, Gier-Lonsway, & Kim, 2012; Peters, Sunderland, Andrews, Rapee, & Mattick, 2012). This three-part study examined the psychometric properties of Fergus et al.’s and Peters et al.’s short-forms of the SIAS and SPS using an American nonclinical adolescent sample in Study 1 (N = 98), American anxiety disorder patient sample in Study 2 (N = 117), and both a South Korean college student sample (N = 341) and …

This study measured the longitudinal relaxation rate constants (R1 ) over a concentration range for non-protein-binding and protein-binding CRs in ex vivo whole blood and plasma at 1.5 and 3.0 Tesla (T) under physiologic arterial conditions.

METHODS: Relaxivities of gadoteridol, gadobutrol, gadobenate, and gadofosveset were measured for [CR] from 0 to 18 mM [mmol(CR)/L(blood)]: the latter being the upper limit of what may be expected in CE-MRA.

RESULTS: In plasma, the 1H2 O R …

Dynamic Surveillance: Evolving Procedures In Metadata And Foreign Content Collection After Snowden, Peter Margulies Dec 2014

Dynamic Surveillance: Evolving Procedures In Metadata And Foreign Content Collection After Snowden, Peter Margulies

UC Law Journal

This Article outlines a dynamic conception of national security surveillance that justifies programs disclosed by Edward Snowden but calls for greater transparency and accountability in the wake of Snowden’s revelations. The dynamic conception supports the legality of section 215 of the USA Patriot Act and section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (“FISA”), programs that received informed input from all three branches of government. Each program is part of a long democratic experiment in the integration of secrecy, deliberation, and strategic advantage that dates to the Constitution’s framing. Both programs reflect Congress’s concern that intelligence collection be sufficiently agile …

Where Is Home Depot “At Home”?: Daimler V. Bauman And The End Of Doing Business Jurisdiction, Tanya J. Monestier Dec 2014

Where Is Home Depot “At Home”?: Daimler V. Bauman And The End Of Doing Business Jurisdiction, Tanya J. Monestier

UC Law Journal

In January 2014, the U.S. Supreme Court decided Daimler AG v. Bauman. The case was supposed to resolve a very important question that had divided courts for decades: when, for jurisdictional purposes, can the contacts of a subsidiary be imputed to its parent? The Supreme Court dodged this question. Instead, it answered a different, but equally important, question: under what circumstances is a corporation “at home” such that a state has general jurisdiction over it? The Court had introduced the “at home” language to the discourse on general jurisdiction a few years earlier in Goodyear Dunlop Tires Operations, S.A. v. …

Triggerfish, Stingrays, And Fourth Amendment Fishing Expeditions, Brian L. Owsley Dec 2014

Triggerfish, Stingrays, And Fourth Amendment Fishing Expeditions, Brian L. Owsley

UC Law Journal

Cell site simulators are an electronic surveillance device that mimics a cell tower causing all nearby cell phones to register their data and information with the cell site simulator. Law enforcement increasingly relies on these devices during the course of routine criminal investigations. The use of cell site simulators raises several concerns. First, the federal government seeks judicial authorization to use such devices via a pen register application. This approach is problematic because a cell site simulator is different than a pen register. Moreover, the standard for issuance of a pen register is very low. Instead, this Article proposes that …

Price Fixing The Priceless? Discouraging Collusion In The Secondary Art Market, Nicole Dornbusch Horowitz Dec 2014

Price Fixing The Priceless? Discouraging Collusion In The Secondary Art Market, Nicole Dornbusch Horowitz

UC Law Journal

In the 1920s and 1930s, major oil companies took advantage of market conditions to raise gasoline prices. They sold a limited amount of gasoline on smaller submarkets and the remainder of their gasoline by other methods. Despite the fact that the submarkets only represented a small portion of the overall gasoline market, pricing in the greater market was based on them. Thus, through collusive agreements, major oil companies were able to raise prices in the overall market by inflating prices in the smaller markets. In United States v. Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., the U.S. Supreme Court held that these agreements constituted …

Evaluation Of Bicyclists Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution Along Distinct Facility Types, James F. Pankow, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Alexander Y. Bigazzi Dec 2014

Evaluation Of Bicyclists Exposure To Traffic-Related Air Pollution Along Distinct Facility Types, James F. Pankow, Miguel A. Figliozzi, Alexander Y. Bigazzi

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

While bicyclists and other active travelers obtain health benefits from increased physical activity, they also risk an uptake of traffic-related air pollution. But pollution exposure for urban bicyclists is not well understood due to a lack of direct measurements and insufficient analysis of the determinants of exposure. This knowledge gap impedes pollution-conscious transportation planning, design, and health impact assessment. The research presented in this report generates new connections between transportation system characteristics and pollution exposure for bicyclists. The primary research questions are: 1) How does urban bicyclists’ exposure to air pollution vary with roadway and travel characteristics? and 2) To …

Site-Specific Mutation Of The Sensor Kinase Gras In Staphylococcus Aureus Alters The Adaptive Response To Distinct Cationic Antimicrobial Peptides, Ambrose L. Cheung, Arnold S. Bayer, Michael R. Yeaman, Yan Q. Xiong, Alan J. Waring, Guido Memmi, Niles Donegan

Dartmouth Scholarship

The Staphylococcus aureus two-component regulatory system, GraRS, is involved in resistance to killing by distinct host defense cationic antimicrobial peptides (HD-CAPs). It is believed to regulate downstream target genes such as mprF and dltABCD to modify the S. aureus surface charge. However, the detailed mechanism(s) by which the histidine kinase, GraS, senses specific HD-CAPs is not well defined. Here, we studied a well-characterized clinical methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strain (MW2), its isogenic graS deletion mutant (ΔgraS strain), a nonameric extracellular loop mutant (ΔEL strain), and four residue-specific ΔEL mutants (D37A, P39A, P39S, and D35G D37G D41G strains). The ΔgraS and …
