Learning To Read Recipes : Activity Diagramming With Narrative Event Chains, Ganesa Thandavam Ponnuraj
Learning To Read Recipes : Activity Diagramming With Narrative Event Chains, Ganesa Thandavam Ponnuraj
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this work, we generate activity diagrams of the recipe text automatically, with the help of narrative event chains. Cooking recipes, that have predominantly imperative sentences, present unique challenges in the form of frequent argument drops and co-reference resolution over evolving (or merging) entities. Here, we introduce an unsupervised approach to automatically recover the recipe flow graphs. Then we illustrate the usefulness of our learned models via narrative cloze task; for the automatic evaluation of our learned models, we make use of one of the oft-used task in Discourse analysis, namely the sentence re-ordering and illustrate their utility. To report …
Understanding Online Fashion Networks, Kota Yamaguchi
Understanding Online Fashion Networks, Kota Yamaguchi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Emergence of online social networks has transformed how people interact with digital media. Any user is a consumer and a publisher of media content, such as texts, images, or videos, in the online community. In such an environment, it is crucial to develop technology to help people by organizing and utilizing plethora of media content to meet the community demands. To this goal, this dissertation studies and tries to establish computational approaches to understand networked content, using large-scale data from a real-world online fashion network, Chictopia. This study focuses on two major challenges of fashion networks: understanding of visual content, …

Correlational Study Between Psychological Birth Trauma And Prenatal Care Among Adolescent Mothers, Brittani Rahndevu
Correlational Study Between Psychological Birth Trauma And Prenatal Care Among Adolescent Mothers, Brittani Rahndevu
2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Research findings to be discussed are from a larger, quantitative study exploring psychological birth trauma (PBT) among adolescents. My study examines prenatal care (PNC) and its effect as a contributing factor in PBT, defined as subjective distress. Research was conducted at John Peter Smith County Hospital (JPS). IRB approval was initially approved by the University of Texas at Arlington and is now held by JPS. The sample included 256 multiethnic adolescents, ages 13-19 years. The Impact of Event Scale was used to measure subjective distress. Little research among adolescents shows the influence of PNC upon PBT. This identified problem statement …
Tracking The Movement Of Pseudomonas Syringae Strains- On The Adaxial Leaf Surface Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Vincent Nguyen
Tracking The Movement Of Pseudomonas Syringae Strains- On The Adaxial Leaf Surface Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Vincent Nguyen
2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Detection of population density is a form of communication for certain phytobacteria that usually involves the association of small diffusible chemical signals, particularly N-acyl homoserine lactones. It is pondered whether or not this molecule and the phytotoxin, coronatine, play a significant role in the directional motility of the wild type (Pst DC3000) and mutant strains (Pst DC3118, Pst DB29, and Pst psy/IR-) of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato on the adaxial surface of Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. A leaf assay and in vivo experimentation by spotting a set of leaves for each bacteria and making an imprint on an agar plate following …

The Impact Sex Trafficking Education Has On Reported Cases, Ivette Cervantes
2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
The purpose of this research study was to determine whether educating the public on the issue of sex trafficking has an impact on cases being reported. Several non-profit organizations located across Texas were interviewed. The organizations' mission is to provide services to sex trafficking victims and raise public awareness. Interviews were conducted with organizations located in Dallas, Fort Worth, Austin, and Houston. A major finding is that failure to properly identify victims is a core issue. Public awareness has increased. The public is aware that sex trafficking is a current issue, but their awareness does not impact cases being reported. …
When The Mountain Goes To Mohammad: The Internet And Judicial Decision-Making, Layne S. Keele
When The Mountain Goes To Mohammad: The Internet And Judicial Decision-Making, Layne S. Keele
New Mexico Law Review
Part I of this Article explores that ambivalence by examining conflicting judicial canons and court opinions addressing the issue. Part II examines the benefits and drawbacks of judicial Internet research with respect to adjudicative facts. In particular, it elaborates on arguments offered by defenders of this kind of research, most notably Judge Richard A. Posner. Part II also highlights the dangers by showing that adjudicative fact research detracts from the reliability of our justice system and undermines due process of law. Part III addresses judges’ online research of legislative facts. It discusses the use of legislative facts by courts generally, …
Brady Reconstructed: An Overdue Expansion Of Rights And Remedies, Leonard Sosnov
Brady Reconstructed: An Overdue Expansion Of Rights And Remedies, Leonard Sosnov
New Mexico Law Review
Part I examines two competing models of due process that the Court uses when considering criminal procedure rights. The first approach extends deference to state legislatures and historical traditions. The alternative approach, advocated here, recognizes due process as a vibrant, fluid source of rights that balances the equities of competing prosecutorial and defense interests, with the overarching goal of attaining accurate dispositions in criminal cases. The article proceeds to apply the second approach in determining the scope of the government’s obligations to provide access to its evidence. Part II suggests that the Court has failed to sufficiently provide constitutionally guaranteed …
It's Not Too Difficult: A Plea To Resurrect The Impossibility Defense, Ken Levy
It's Not Too Difficult: A Plea To Resurrect The Impossibility Defense, Ken Levy
New Mexico Law Review
The impossibility defense has baffled legal scholars, courts, and attorneys. This defense is especially difficult for two main reasons. First, it is not obvious which kinds of attempts it exculpates, which kinds of attempts it does not exculpate, and why it works only for the former and not the latter. Second, courts that have not resolved the first set of difficulties have only compounded the confusion by misstating and misapplying the impossibility defense. In particular, they have mistaken factual impossibility for legal impossibility and have interpreted certain factual impossibility situations as hybrid-impossibility situations. As I explained in the Introduction, all …

The Effect Of Warning Labels On Media Advertisements And The Influence On Women's Body Satisfaction, Kaysha Herd
The Effect Of Warning Labels On Media Advertisements And The Influence On Women's Body Satisfaction, Kaysha Herd
2014 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
Research shows one probable source of body dissatisfaction is the thin ideal prevalent in media images (Hargreaves & Tiggemann, 2004). This bombardment of thin images can lead individuals to internalize the thin ideal, possibly leading to body dissatisfaction, poorer life satisfaction, and/or irregular eating behaviors. The focal hypothesis investigated if women's internalization of the thin ideal affects their body satisfaction, even when warning labels were present on advertisements. Secondly, it examined if body satisfaction varies among different ethnicities. Participants were 150 female undergraduates randomly assigned to one of four conditions: (1) control, (2) thin ideal, (3) thin ideal with subtle …

The researcher collected data with surveys, observations, and interviews to determine the perceptions of all stakeholders involved in the co-teaching …
Shape/Image Registration For Medical Imaging : Novel Algorithms And Applications., Ahmed Magdy Shalaby 1982-
Shape/Image Registration For Medical Imaging : Novel Algorithms And Applications., Ahmed Magdy Shalaby 1982-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation looks at two different categories of the registration approaches: Shape registration, and Image registration. It also considers the applications of these approaches into the medical imaging field. Shape registration is an important problem in computer vision, computer graphics and medical imaging. It has been handled in different manners in many applications like shapebased segmentation, shape recognition, and tracking. Image registration is the process of overlaying two or more images of the same scene taken at different times, from different viewpoints, and/or by different sensors. Many image processing applications like remote sensing, fusion of medical images, and computer-aided surgery …
Development Of Models For The Study Of The Molecular Mechanisms Of Host Restriction And Adaptation Of Hantaviruses., Ryan Carroll Mcallister 1988-
Development Of Models For The Study Of The Molecular Mechanisms Of Host Restriction And Adaptation Of Hantaviruses., Ryan Carroll Mcallister 1988-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Hantaviruses, family Bunyaviridae, are present throughout the globe in a variety of mouse, rat, mole, vole, shrew, or bat species. Hantaviruses persist for the lifetime of the animal reservoir, while causing no signs or symptoms of disease. Only the rodent-borne hantaviruses cause disease in humans. In contrast, a “spillover” infection of a hantavirus into a nonreservoir rodent species results in an asymptomatic acute infection. We and others in the field are interested in understanding the biology of these virus-host interactions and mechanisms that underlie these three very different outcomes. The second chapter of my thesis focused on probing the intrahost …
Transient Heat Transfer Between A Magnetocaloric Packed Particle Bed And Stagnant Interstitial Fluid., Michael G. Schroeder 1988-
Transient Heat Transfer Between A Magnetocaloric Packed Particle Bed And Stagnant Interstitial Fluid., Michael G. Schroeder 1988-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In the field of magnetocaloric heat pumps, many system models have been made. What most of these models lack is heat transfer occurring while there is no fluid motion. It is the objective of this paper to analytically determine and experimentally verify heat transfer with no bulk fluid motion. The addition of a pure dwell period to the typical magnetocaloric cycle was shown to have a positive performance impact in specific conditions. These conditions correspond to regenerators that are heat transfer rate limited in operation. The heat transfer mechanism for this particular case was shown to be pure conduction via …
Ensemble Learning Method For Hidden Markov Models., Anis Hamdi
Ensemble Learning Method For Hidden Markov Models., Anis Hamdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
For complex classification systems, data are gathered from various sources and potentially have different representations. Thus, data may have large intra-class variations. In fact, modeling each data class with a single model might lead to poor generalization. The classification error can be more severe for temporal data where each sample is represented by a sequence of observations. Thus, there is a need for building a classification system that takes into account the variations within each class in the data. This dissertation introduces an ensemble learning method for temporal data that uses a mixture of Hidden Markov Model (HMM) classifiers. We …
Retinal Synaptic Function In The Absence Of The On Pathway., Kathryn Marie Heath Fransen
Retinal Synaptic Function In The Absence Of The On Pathway., Kathryn Marie Heath Fransen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Complete Congenital Stationary Night Blindness (cCSNB) is a rare hereditary retinal disorder characterized by abnormal night vision. cCSNB is caused by postsynaptic defects in On bipolar cells (BCs) and is identified by the presence of an electroretinogram (ERG) with a normal a-wave, corresponding to photoreceptor function, and the absence of a b-wave, corresponding to a failure of On BC function. Through the study of genetic mutations in mouse that result in no b-wave ERG phenotypes, several proteins have been identified that play crucial roles in On BC signal transmission. I focused on four mouse models of cCSNB; Nyxnob (Nyctalopin mutant), …
Mathematical Modeling For Partial Object Detection., Ahmed Reda Amin El-Barkouky
Mathematical Modeling For Partial Object Detection., Ahmed Reda Amin El-Barkouky
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
From a computer vision point of view, the image is a scene consisting of objects of interest and a background represented by everything else in the image. The relations and interactions among these objects are the key factors for scene understanding. In this dissertation, a mathematical model is designed for the detection of partially occluded faces captured in unconstrained real life conditions. The proposed model novelty comes from explicitly considering certain objects that are common to occlude faces and embedding them in the face model. This enables the detection of faces in difficult settings and provides more information to subsequent …
A Non-Invasive Image Based System For Early Diagnosis Of Prostate Cancer., Ahmad Abdusalam Firjani Firjani Naef
A Non-Invasive Image Based System For Early Diagnosis Of Prostate Cancer., Ahmad Abdusalam Firjani Firjani Naef
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Prostate cancer is the second most fatal cancer experienced by American males. The average American male has a 16.15% chance of developing prostate cancer, which is 8.38% higher than lung cancer, the second most likely cancer. The current in-vitro techniques that are based on analyzing a patients blood and urine have several limitations concerning their accuracy. In addition, the prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood-based test, has a high chance of false positive diagnosis, ranging from 28%-58%. Yet, biopsy remains the gold standard for the assessment of prostate cancer, but only as the last resort because of its invasive nature, high …
Unnatural Pedagogy : A Computational Analysis Of Children's Learning To Learn From Other People., Baxter S. Eaves 1984-
Unnatural Pedagogy : A Computational Analysis Of Children's Learning To Learn From Other People., Baxter S. Eaves 1984-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Infants rely on others for much of what they learn. People are a ready source of quick information, but people produce data differently than the world. Data from a person are a result of that person's knowledgeability and intentions. People may produce inaccurate or misleading data. On the other hand, if a person is knowledgeable about the world and intends to teach, that person may produce data that are more useful than simply accurate data: data that are pedagogical. This idea that people have special innate methods for efficient information transfer lies at the heart of recent proposals regarding what …

Bots are malicious, automated computer programs that execute malicious scripts and predefined functions on an affected computer. They pose cybersecurity threats and are one of the most sophisticated and common types of cybercrime tools today. They spread viruses, generate spam, steal personal sensitive information, rig online polls and commit other types of online crime and fraud. They sneak into unprotected systems through the Internet by seeking vulnerable entry points. They access the system’s resources like a human user does. Now the question arises how do we counter this? How do we prevent bots and on the other hand allow human …
Phase Transformation Studies Of Metal Oxides To Dichalcogenides In 1-D Structures., Dustin Ray Cummins 1987-
Phase Transformation Studies Of Metal Oxides To Dichalcogenides In 1-D Structures., Dustin Ray Cummins 1987-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Recently, the use of materials with nanoscale morphologies has expanded, particularly with applications in energy conversion, catalysis, and energy storage. One drawback to single crystalline nanomaterials, especially 1D nanowires, is the difficulty in synthesizing these compounds, as the material chemistry becomes more complicated. Metal oxide nanowires can be synthesized easily and can be produced in relatively large quantities. However, more complex materials, such as metal chalcogenides, cannot typically be synthesized using facile methods, and currently very few techniques involve scalable methods. Phase transformation of metal oxides nanowires to form metal sulfides and selenides by gas-solid reactions is one viable route …
Graduate Students Who Are Part-Time Workers : How Does Occupational Stress And Gender Role Affect Job Satisfaction?, Megan Church-Nally
Graduate Students Who Are Part-Time Workers : How Does Occupational Stress And Gender Role Affect Job Satisfaction?, Megan Church-Nally
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Job satisfaction and occupational stress have consistently been examined in professionals for decades due to its link to turnover and reduced productivity. Similar concepts have been investigated in undergraduate students, but there is paucity of research of attrition in graduate students. This gap persists despite estimates that 50% of graduate students fail to graduate (Cassuto, 2013). Such attrition is not due to deficiency in academic skills, as Carroll, Ng, and Birch (2009) reported that personal reasons were cited more than academic concerns for attrition. The purpose of this dissertation was to address this job satisfaction and occupational stress gap with …
Classification Of Clinical Outcomes Using High-Throughput And Clinical Informatics., Alexander Carswell Cambon
Classification Of Clinical Outcomes Using High-Throughput And Clinical Informatics., Alexander Carswell Cambon
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
It is widely recognized that many cancer therapies are effective only for a subset of patients. However clinical studies are most often powered to detect an overall treatment effect. To address this issue, classification methods are increasingly being used to predict a subset of patients which respond differently to treatment. This study begins with a brief history of classification methods with an emphasis on applications involving melanoma. Nonparametric methods suitable for predicting subsets of patients responding differently to treatment are then reviewed. Each method has different ways of incorporating continuous, categorical, clinical and high-throughput covariates. For nonparametric and parametric methods, …

Reading Achievement In A Large Urban School District : An Analysis Of The Effects Of Four Reading Programs On The Reading Growth Of Four Reading Ability Groups., Deborah Patrice Anderson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Reading underachievement among adolescent students, specifically in urban areas, has been well documented in the literature. This unfortunate reality may point to two problems in America. Many schools possess neither the skill to prepare students for college and career nor possess the capacity to prepare them for a workforce that is becoming more and more high tech and in need of literate workers. Some schools are at a loss when it comes to teaching students to think of literacy as a critical tool for self-advocacy and identity development. Sociocultural perspectives on literacy view reading as an activity that develops as …
The Role Of Stem Cells In Adipose Tissue Remodeling., Candice Reshay Holden 1988-
The Role Of Stem Cells In Adipose Tissue Remodeling., Candice Reshay Holden 1988-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The work presented in this dissertation outlines the role of stem cells in the remodeling of adipose tissue under conditions of nutrient excess. Obesity-induced variations in adipose tissue stem cell distribution were uncovered by analysis of the stromal vascular fraction isolated from mice fed a high fat diet for several weeks. Bone marrow cell transplantation was used to determine the derivation of progenitor cells found in adipose tissue; and supplementation of depleted progenitor cell populations achieved via direct cell transplantation, helped to determine the contribution of these progenitor cells to the remodeling process. The dissertation is presented in five chapters …
Boundary Contour Based Surface Representation., Yong Su
Boundary Contour Based Surface Representation., Yong Su
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
We receive most information about our surrounding space and objects through the eyes. To reconstruct the 3D space and objects in the visual system from the 2D retinal images, surface representation must be a critical intermediate stage in the visual processing stream. It is hypothesized in the dissertation that the visual system represents textured surface by a border-to-interior strategy: boundary contours would be encoded first and then border-ownership assignments would be resolved. This process would solve the related problems such as figure-ground segregation, surface depth relationship, occlusion, transparency, etc. As a result, the boundary contours of the surfaces would be …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Companies implement effective project management to successfully operate in turbulent market cycles and ensure the success of their endeavors. Project management is indispensable for most industrial sectors and is employed in a variety of for-profit and non-profit organizations. It can be considered as a management method that contributes value to a variety of organizations. Many practitioners and researchers have attempted to identify the causes of project failure, the factors of project success, and the criteria to gauge this success. There has been little agreement on what constitutes project success. In response to the widespread debate surrounding project success, several lists …
