"Post Your Version Here!": Performances In/Of Online, Noncommercial, Video-To-Video Adaptations, Lyndsay Michalik Jan 2014

"Post Your Version Here!": Performances In/Of Online, Noncommercial, Video-To-Video Adaptations, Lyndsay Michalik

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Processes of creative adaptation no longer fit traditional, culturally sanctioned forms, like commercial book-to-film adaptation, or vice versa. Meanwhile, internet users are demonstrating how noncommercial, creative text adaptation using video technology has become an everyday art form, a skill set, a form of communication, and a means of cultural commentary. Internet video adapters physically perform in their own videos and they create videos that work performatively online. Negotiating the slippery spaces between copyright, creativity, and cultural commentary, these creators adapt videos in myriad ways, and find spaces to share their adaptations online, despite (for most) a lack of financial return …

Built Environment And Risk Of Obesity In The United States: A Multilevel Modeling Approach, Yanqing Xu Jan 2014

Built Environment And Risk Of Obesity In The United States: A Multilevel Modeling Approach, Yanqing Xu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation provides a series of exploratory analyses of the relationship between built environment and obesity by using multiple data sets and employing the state-of-art Geographic Information Systems methods. Several built environment factors including street connectivity, walkability and food environment, are for the first time measured across 48 contiguous states of the U.S., built from a fine geographic scale such as the census tract level. Based on the nationwide BRFSS data, the first study used the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) model to analyze the obesity rates at the county level. The model results reveal that overall obesity rates are negatively …

Chatting About Science : A Qualitative Study On Increasing The Number And Depth Of Science-Based Conversations Among Aquarium Visitor Groups, Erika Kristen Poarch Jan 2014

Chatting About Science : A Qualitative Study On Increasing The Number And Depth Of Science-Based Conversations Among Aquarium Visitor Groups, Erika Kristen Poarch

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Informal science education centers, including aquariums, are often tasked with educating the general public on conservation issues, natural environments, and general science topics. The public tends to see these centers as entertaining leisure destinations in which they have the opportunity to learn something about the presented information. It is widely accepted that learning in informal environments is shaped by the learner’s motivations, interests, background knowledge, and social interactions. However, these impacting factors are rarely studied in depth, particularly across different types of visitors. This qualitative case study project integrates original research on visitor interests, motivations, and self-reported learning into the …

Evaluating The Efficacy And Acceptability Of Videoconferencing In School-Based Behavioral Consultation, Aaron Jason Fischer Jan 2014

Evaluating The Efficacy And Acceptability Of Videoconferencing In School-Based Behavioral Consultation, Aaron Jason Fischer

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

School-based behavioral consultation is a way of providing psychological services to students through their teachers. This indirect service delivery model has been shown to be effective for improving academic and behavioral concerns. Typically, school-based behavioral consultation is conducted face-to-face (in-vivo) between consultants (psychologists) and consultee’s (teachers); however, current technologies have provided an alternative medium to communicate, via videoconferencing. Videoconferencing has been shown to be an effective alternative to face-to-face communication across many different practice domains and applications. Videoconferencing in schools, particularly for school-based behavioral consultation, may be a viable alternative. The proposed study evaluated the efficacy and acceptability of videoconferencing …

“Gathering Thinglessness”: Samuel Beckett’S Essayistic Approach To Nothing, Dena Marks Jan 2014

“Gathering Thinglessness”: Samuel Beckett’S Essayistic Approach To Nothing, Dena Marks

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

My dissertation, “Gathering Thinglessness”: Samuel Beckett’s Essayistic Approach to Nothing, responds to the dominant strand in Beckett criticism that figures the writer as a philosopher of “nothing” whether of Democritean, existentialist, or deconstructionist voids. In contrast, I argue that Beckett’s literary texts approximate philosophy in their essayistic style, characterized by the incorporation of multiple, contradictory sources in a fragmented form. While philosophical analyses are often designed to demonstrate that the literary texts are the equivalent of philosophical discourse, in the first chapter I argue that they actually serve to re-subordinate literature to philosophy since they depend on the pre-existing philosophical …

A New Class Of Generalized Dagum Distribution With Applications To Income And Lifetime Data, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang, Mavis Pararai Jan 2014

A New Class Of Generalized Dagum Distribution With Applications To Income And Lifetime Data, Broderick O. Oluyede, Shujiao Huang, Mavis Pararai

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

The generalized beta distribution of the second kind (GB2), McDonald [11], McDonald and Xu [12] is an important distribution with applications in finance and actuarial sciences, as well as economics, where Dagum distribution which is a sub-model of GB2 distribution plays an important role in size distribution of personal income. In this note, a new class of generalized Dagum distribution called gamma-Dagum distribution is presented. The gamma-Dagum (GD) distribution which includes the gamma-Burr III (GB III), gamma-Fisk or gamma-log logistic (GF of GLLog), Zografos and Balakrishnan-Dagum (ZB-D), ZB-Burr III (ZB-B III), ZB-Fisk of ZB-Log logistic (ZB-F or ZB-LLog), Burr III …

The edTPA is a performance-based assessment that aims to measure teacher candidates’ readiness for teaching. Beginning in the fall of 2015, this assessment will be a mandatory requirement for those seeking certification in Georgia. General agreement exists in the field of education about the basic knowledge and skills essential for beginning teachers to demonstrate in classroom teaching. Does edTPA measure the knowledge and skills essential for beginning mathematics teachers in particular? Assuming that edTPA can successfully measure that knowledge and skills for beginning teachers, the use of the assessment could be valuable.

One of the critical components of edTPA is …

Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (GAMTE) Annual Conference (2007-2019)

The availability and familiarity of online discussion tools create new instructional options that teacher educators can use to foster prospective teachers’ understanding of mathematics. In particular, online discussion blogs provide an avenue through which teacher educators can press prospective teachers to explore mathematical concepts and share their mathematical reasoning with peers. Furthermore, by incorporating visual stimulations as a design component of these discussion blogs, prospective teachers can make sense of and respond to others’ ideas about mathematical concepts with greater clarity. This paper shares preliminary findings of a research study that examined the extent to which the design of a …

Successful Implementation Of Pbis In An Alternative School Setting, Jill Rogers, Marcus Richardson

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Mountain Creek Academy is beginning the 6th year of PBIS implementation. Year before last they began to look for ways to make this program meaningful to the population they serve, as many students were placed there for punitive measures. They decided to use the Boys Town model to teach social skills in conjunction with the PBIS framework. This additional curriculum gave the academy the push it needed to move from emergent to operational status on the list of PBIS schools kept by the Georgia Department of Education. Office discipline referrals were reduced by 460%, and the climate of the …

Self-Monitoring Strategies For Improving Classroom Engagement Of Secondary Students, Kathleen B. Cook Jan 2014

Self-Monitoring Strategies For Improving Classroom Engagement Of Secondary Students, Kathleen B. Cook

Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference

Research indicates that classroom engagement steadily declines as grade levels increase, with lowest levels of student engagement in high school (Marks, 2000; Wang & Holcombe, 2010; Wang & Eccles, 2011). Additionally, the highest amounts of disengagement are observed from the lowest performing students (Blatchford, Bassett, & Brown, 2011). Teaching self-monitoring skills to at-risk students or students with disabilities at the secondary level can be an effective method of increasing classroom engagement. Furthermore, self-monitoring strategies are individualized supports that can be applied as tertiary-level PBIS interventions (Bohanon, Fenning, Eber, & Flannery, 2007).

In this presentation, the presenter will share self-monitoring information …

Population Structure, Size, And The Thermal Ecology Of Iowa Wood Turtles (Glyptemys Insculpta): A Comparison Between Suburban And Rural Populations, Samuel Wesley Berg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Population structure, population size, and the thermal ecology of wood turtles (Glyptemys insculpta) was studied in a suburban population in Black Hawk County (BHC) and compared to a rural population in Butler County (BC), Iowa. In a suburban population of 35 wood turtles, 32 (91.4%) were adults distributed in a 1:1 sex ratio [16 (45.7%) females and 16 (45.7%) males], and 3 (8.6%) were juveniles. In the rural population, 60 (98.4% of the total population) adult turtles were distributed in a 3:2 sex ratio [36 (59.0%) females and 24 (39.3%) males], and one (1.7%) juvenile was located. Population structure was …
