Impact Of An Educational Intervention On Nurses’ Knowledge And Caring Behavior For Late Preterm Infants, Francesca I. Onyejuruwa
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of an educational intervention using Swanson’s (1991) caring theory on (a) nurses’ knowledge and caring behavior to late preterm infants (LPIs) and their families, and (b) the incidence of LPIs’ hospital visits and readmission rates for hyperbilirubinemia and dehydration in the first 30 days of life. The study began with the initial testing of the two instruments used and there were no inconsistencies identified in the content being measured. A convenient sample of nursery and postpartum nurses was recruited from two hospitals within a healthcare system. The nurses completed the …

The purpose of this study was to identify disparities in the delivery of standards based dance education in the K-12 learning environment in the state of Florida and to give specific attention to curricular choices and instructional design. A mixed-methods approach was used and included a survey of K-12 dance educators in Florida as well as interviews with leaders in dance and arts education in the state. This inquiry identified common areas where curriculum choice and instructional design meet the barriers of time, space, place, learner population, expected educational outcomes, and teacher preparation. Each of these areas suggested specific limitations …
Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger
Infrastructure To Model Complex Systems: Hydrological Modeling, Frank Wissinger
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This research proposes an Infrastructure to model complex systems for hydrological modeling. Currently, the three main hydrological packages are: i) SEAWAT (modeling groundwater flow); ii) HECRAS (modeling surface water flow); iii) HEC-HMS (modeling atmospheric water flow). Each of these models is self-contained and has a different timescale and simulation speed. Consequently, any integrated model will only run as fast as the slowest of the models. This makes it difficult to provide reliable and dynamic information on water levels and water availability for a given geographical region in a timely manner. The goal of this research is to facilitate the integration …
Integration Disconnect In Police Agencies: The Effects Of Agency Factors On The Production Andconsumption Of Crime Analysis, Jamie L. Seigel
Integration Disconnect In Police Agencies: The Effects Of Agency Factors On The Production Andconsumption Of Crime Analysis, Jamie L. Seigel
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Poorly integrated crime analysis may be a detriment to crime reduction efforts and financial resources. The purpose of this research is to identify deficiencies and successes in crime analysis integration and to understand which agency factors are related. Using the Stratified Model of Problem Solving, Analysis, and Accountability and data from a national PERF survey of police agencies, this study quantifies the levels of production and consumption-based integration disconnect as well as other important agency factors. To determine which agency factors contribute most to integration disconnect, bivariate correlation and multiple regression analyses are used to examine the relationships, while controlling …
Interactive Austen: An Analysis Of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries And The Postmodern Audience, Janette Duval
Interactive Austen: An Analysis Of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries And The Postmodern Audience, Janette Duval
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The aim of this study is to reveal how LBD adheres to postmodern tenets while also being ultimately suspicious of these principles. This suspicion of postmodern principles is reflected in the interaction between the main subject of the videos, Lizzie Bennet, and the audience. This examination invokes the questions of when, where, and how the audience experiences LBD. This illuminates the manner in which LBD functions as a postmodern literary text and how this text is critical of its digital composition.
Inner Struggles Fought On Paper, Misoo Filan
Inner Struggles Fought On Paper, Misoo Filan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
As an MFA candidate at the Florida Atlantic University, I began in figurative painting and ended with abstract ink and pencil drawings in my thesis work. In between was a progression of artistic experimentation in theme, technique and medium to explore issues of female identity and childhood sexual abuse. From a girl trapped in a dark fairytale to a pregnant woman followed by a pedophile to a new mother frustrated that her own ambitions have been usurped, the final transformation of female identity into fierce protector came after confronting memories of child abuse. Using India ink and pencil drawings, my …

Language Choice In Children’S Animated Tv Shows, Katharina Golitschek
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This study aims to analyze three popular U.S. children’s TV shows – Dora the Explorer (Nickelodeon), Maya & Miguel (PBS) and Handy Manny (Disney Channel) – in terms of their incorporation of Spanish. Qualitative and quantitative measures were used to assess the frequency and types of code switching both in the context of bilingualism and language pedagogy. The study revealed different strategies of language choice and socio-cultural objectives for each show. A close analysis of language choice in the three children’s TV programs revealed distinct approaches to TV writing in the name of raising awareness of ethnic diversity, developing cultural …
Knots In The Woods: An Assessment Of The Effects Of Location On Self-Directed Experiential Learning, Jasmine Coyle
Knots In The Woods: An Assessment Of The Effects Of Location On Self-Directed Experiential Learning, Jasmine Coyle
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
My research measured completion and retention of procedural learning tasks, and declarative and procedural components of engagement in indoor and outdoor settings. Instructor-assisted Self-Directed Learning and Non-instructor-assisted Self-Directed Learning were implemented in the context of an Experiential Learning approach. Experimental covariates included student-specific variables such as background and experience, and environment-specific variables such as temperature, and humidity. AIC model averaging was used to identify the best-fitting mixed GLM models. Neither location, nor pedagogic method, proved to be a significant predictor of the probability that a student would complete the most complex of the procedural learning tasks, and the percent of …
Relationships Among Crime Analysis, Accountability, And Innovative Policing Strategies: Results From A National Survey, Justin James Smith
Relationships Among Crime Analysis, Accountability, And Innovative Policing Strategies: Results From A National Survey, Justin James Smith
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Over the years, innovations such as community-oriented policing, problem-oriented policing, and hot spots policing have enabled the police to make substantial crime control and reduction gains. However, empirical research has shown that police occasionally misuse these strategies in practice. One possible solution is the co-implementation of these strategies with crime analysis. Yet, little is known about this relationship in practice. Using national survey data collected by the Police Executive Research Forum in 2008 from a sample of over 1,000 United States police agencies this thesis explores this relationship. Results of bivariate analysis between agency commitment to and integration of crime …

School Principal Influence Actions, Climate, Culture, And School Performance, Bree J. Miron
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This quantitative, non-experimental study was conducted to investigate the link between school principal influence actions, climate, culture, and school performance. Additionally, this study sought to determine if the influence of these variables or the relationship among them is altered by individual and/or institutional characteristics. The first phase of the study was conducted to determine whether or not the Customer Survey aligned to distinct dimensions. Two factors were identified: Staff Attitudes and Student Disruptions. The second part used regression to examine the relationships among four constructs and test the seven hypotheses.

Phase one of the study used a modified Delphi methodology, consisting of an Internet-based survey and semantic differential survey. The …
Only Sound Remains, Raheleh T. Filsoofi
Only Sound Remains, Raheleh T. Filsoofi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
We each experience the world through the prism of our upbringing, our traditions and the familiar sights and sounds embedded deep within our soul. Only Sound Remains is an installation in which I explore and share those experiences through objects, sounds and video. Ceramic vessels inspired by the traditions of my ancestors hide and shape sounds that narrate simple and complex experiences, which are the stories of my life. The sounds relate to the world that I came from and that still can be heard now. The sounds are not clear until one gets close to the vessels and lifts …

Americans All! The Role Of Advertising In Re-Imaging Ethnicity In America: The Case Of The War Advertising Council, 1939-1945, Jacqueline S. May
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Throughout America’s history the call for laborers has been filled by influxes of immigrants. Coinciding with the arrival of the first non-Anglo Saxon immigrants were negative attitudes about them, as they were deemed inferior and classified as lowerranking “others” by the dominant culture that needed them. Thus, the cycle of need and resentment was born to be repeated throughout the Nation’s history. In the first half of the twentieth century a shift occurred in American public perception of, and attitudes towards, immigrant groups including eastern European Jews, Italians and the Irish among others. This shift was marked primarily in terms …
American National Identity And Discourses Of The Frontier In Early 20th Century Visual Culture, Chandra Ann Maldonado
American National Identity And Discourses Of The Frontier In Early 20th Century Visual Culture, Chandra Ann Maldonado
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis examines the rise of image culture in the 1920’s and its impact on American national identity. I demonstrate that, perhaps surprisingly, the central figure in these debates was not a past or present prominent American but instead an indeterminate Other which is read in ambivalent ways and for varied purposes. It is the central claim of this project that in order to trace the modern American subject that emerges from the 1920s national rift, one must attend to the ways in which a felt need to view and position oneself in relation to “the Other” was essential to …
The Presentation Of Self, Kandy G. Lopez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Curious to understand my fascination with and attraction to certain individuals who live and work in urban, often economically disadvantaged environments, my thesis exhibition explores properties of paint and image to develop a personal and compelling visual vocabulary that communicates as well as celebrates the strength, power, confidence and swag of these individuals. This work investigates the "face" people front in public in order to survive their situations. Representing individuals within my own community in Miami, these portraits help me come to terms with the way I too have adopted and performed identities of survival. Additionally, I want this work …
The Mixed-Race Girl’S Guide To The Art Of Passing: Racial Simulations In Danzy Senna’S Caucasia And Nella Larsen’S Quicksand, Gyasi S. Byng
The Mixed-Race Girl’S Guide To The Art Of Passing: Racial Simulations In Danzy Senna’S Caucasia And Nella Larsen’S Quicksand, Gyasi S. Byng
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Racial identifications are continually influenced by and constructed through one’s environment. Building on Jean Baudrillard’s “The Precession of Simulacra” and Gaston Bachelard’s The Poetics of Space, this thesis argues that houses and clothing are the material objects that allow characters Birdie Lee from Danzy Senna’s Caucasia and Helga Crane from Nella Larsen’s Quicksand to construct their mixed race identities. Birdie Lee’s childhood home is the place where she develops a mixed race identity. When she leaves that home, she is forced to take on simulacra in order to pass for white. Without a stable childhood or adult home, Helga Crane’s …

Transmitter-Receiver System For Time Average Fourier Telescopy, Diego F. Pava
Transmitter-Receiver System For Time Average Fourier Telescopy, Diego F. Pava
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Time Average Fourier Telescopy (TAFT) has been proposed as a means for obtaining high-resolution, diffraction-limited images over large distances through ground-level horizontal-path atmospheric turbulence. Image data is collected in the spatial-frequency, or Fourier, domain by means of Fourier Telescopy; an inverse two dimensional Fourier transform yields the actual image. TAFT requires active illumination of the distant object by moving interference fringe patterns. Light reflected from the object is collected by a “light-bucket” detector, and the resulting electrical signal is digitized and subjected to a series of signal processing operations, including an all-critical averaging of the amplitude and phase of a …
Unifying The Conceptual Levels Of Network Security Through The Use Of Patterns, Ajoy Kumar
Unifying The Conceptual Levels Of Network Security Through The Use Of Patterns, Ajoy Kumar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Network architectures are described by the International Standard for Organization (ISO), which contains seven layers. The internet uses four of these layers, of which three are of interest to us. These layers are Internet Protocol (IP) or Network Layer, Transport Layer and Application Layer. We need to protect against attacks that may come through any of these layers. In the world of network security, systems are plagued by various attacks, internal and external, and could result in Denial of Service (DoS) and/or other damaging effects. Such attacks and loss of service can be devastating for the users of the system. …
Transition Experiences Of The Chronically Ill Adolescent, Kelly N. White
Transition Experiences Of The Chronically Ill Adolescent, Kelly N. White
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The continued development of the American health care system and evolving technology have led to an increased life expectancy within the general population. In fact, these advancements have also resulted in growing numbers of young people with chronic illnesses living into adulthood. Approximately one third of children ages 10-17 have a chronic disease, and the vast majority of these children will survive beyond their 20th birthday (Blum, 1995; Lotstein, McPherson, Strickland, & Newacheck, 2005; White, 2002). The main objective of this study was to explore the healthcare transition (HCT) practices of health care providers and the HCT experiences of chronically …
The “Closed World” Of The Exotic Leelo Singers: The Representation And Reception Of The Title Character And Other Seto Women In The Film Taarka, Kerli Kirch
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
This thesis utilizes a multi-perspectival cultural and media studies approach analyzing the production, filmic text, and reception of Taarka, the first film about Setos, that is advertised as a (docu)drama. However, the analysis shows that it can also be interpreted as an ethnographic film. It examines which intersecting identities related to Seto women are depicted in the film and whether audiences and critics recognize the power dynamics of these intersections. It also analyses how the Estonian cultural economic environment, the filmic text, audience comments and critics reviews reinforce or challenge hegemonies connected with these intersections. Drawing on the principles of …

The “Shepard” Will Guide Us: A Textual Analysis Of Hegemonic Reinforcement And Resistance In The Mass Effect Video Game Series, Maricruz Gonzalez
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Mass Effect is a Science Fiction/Action Role Playing/Third Person Shooter video game series that takes place in the year 2183, in which the player assumes control of Commander Shepard. Players can choose to customize the character based on his/her gender, appearance, sexual orientation, background origin and occupation. The choices that show up in the game are also based on how the player wants their version of Shepard to interact with other characters and allows players some leeway to shape their own narrative. The series also discusses and acknowledges issues of race, gender, subjecthood and sovereignty, politics and sexual orientation within …
Testing The Theory Of Dominant Institutionalized Policy Narratives Using Florida’S “Stand Your Ground” Discourse, Amanda Gillespie
Testing The Theory Of Dominant Institutionalized Policy Narratives Using Florida’S “Stand Your Ground” Discourse, Amanda Gillespie
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Narratives are a very important part of public policy negotiations and deliberations. Public policy research has shown that policy narratives are manipulated to fit the motives of the creators and enforcers of that narrative (Stone, 2002). The creators and enforcers of these narratives use symbols, language, and other techniques to ensure that the narrative survives and dominates the political and social environment by becoming the favored policy prescription (Stone, 2002; Miller, 2012; Jones & McBeth, 2010; Schneider & Ingram, 1993). This study employs a qualitative content analysis to trace the genealogy of the following narratives that make up the “Stand …
The Daoist Gardener, Stephen Futej
The Daoist Gardener, Stephen Futej
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
The following statement supports the investigations that culminated in the body of sculptural work entitled “Daoist Garden”. It is an examination of the most basic sculptural issues of form and space, and reverses the roles of prototype and mold to give visual accounting of spaces created by curved planes. These spatial records allude to cycles of disintegration and reconfiguration of matter on various timelines and scales. The philosophical influence behind the work employs the concepts of yin and yang, which relate directly to the mold/positive relationship, and are essential to experiencing Dao, the eternally nameless underlying order of the universe.
Three-Dimensional Geomodeling To Identify Spatial Relations Between Lithostratigraphy And Porosity In The Karst Carbonate Biscayne Aquifer, Southeastern Florida, Richard Westcott
Three-Dimensional Geomodeling To Identify Spatial Relations Between Lithostratigraphy And Porosity In The Karst Carbonate Biscayne Aquifer, Southeastern Florida, Richard Westcott
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
In southeastern Florida, the majority of drinking water comes from the Biscayne aquifer. This aquifer is comprised of heterogeneous limestones, sandstones, sand, shell and clayey sand with zones of very high permeability. Visualizing the spatial variations in lithology, porosity and permeability of heterogeneous aquifers, like the Biscayne, can be difficult using traditional methods of investigation. Using the Roxar IRAP RMS software multi-layered 3D conceptual geomodels of the lithology, cyclostratigraphy and porosity were created in a portion of the Biscayne aquifer. The models were built using published data from borehole geophysical measurements, core samples, and thin sections. Spatial relations between lithology, …
Time-Frequency Classification Of Gamma Oscillatory Activity In The Frontoparietal System During Working Memory, Tracy A. Romano
Time-Frequency Classification Of Gamma Oscillatory Activity In The Frontoparietal System During Working Memory, Tracy A. Romano
Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019
Working memory (WM) is a process that allows for the temporary and limited storage of information for an immediate goal or to be stored into a more permanent system. A large number of studies have led to the widely accepted view that WM is mediated by the frontoparietal network (FPN), consisting of areas in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Current evidence suggests that task specific patterns of neuronal oscillatory activity within the FPN play a fundamental role in WM, and yet specific spatio-temporal properties of this activity are not well characterized. This study utilized multisite local …
