Gardasil Uptake In Boys: Barriers And Strategies To Increase Vaccination Rates, Shawna Allyson Haislet

Graduate Research Papers

The human papillomavirus affects over half of sexually active males and females at some point in their lifetime. Fortunately, there is a recommended vaccine, Gardasil, which can help protect both young males and females from acquiring certain strains of the HPV virus (CDC, 201 ld). The American Academy of Family Physicians, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine recommend HPV vaccination (CDC, 2012d). Even with these recommendations from highly trusted medical organizations and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' (ACIP) routine recommendation for use in 11 and …

Geography

In this paper, seven researchers reflect on the journeys their research projects have taken when they engage with and synthesize complex problems. These journeys embody an adaptive approach to tackling problems characterized by their interconnectedness and emergence, and that transcend traditional units of analysis such as ecosystems. In this paper we argue that making such a process deliberate and explicit will help researchers better combine different research paradigms such as expert-driven and participant-directed work, thus resulting in both broad explanations and specific phenomenon; research tensions traditionally defined as oppositional must be approached as complimentary. This paper includes researchers’ personal journeys …

This paper, developed under the framework of the RECCAP initiative, aims at providing improved estimates of the carbon and GHG (CO2, CH4 and N2O) balance of continental Africa. The various components and processes of the African carbon and GHG budget are considered, existing data reviewed, and new data from different methodologies (inventories, ecosystem flux measurements, models, and atmospheric inversions) presented. Uncertainties are quantified and current gaps and weaknesses in knowledge and monitoring systems described in order to guide future requirements. The majority of results agree that Africa is a small sink of carbon on an annual scale, with an average …

Multivariate Generalizability Of Writing Curriculum-Based Measurement (Cbm): An Examination Of Form, Occasion, And Scoring Method, Katherine Hunter Chenier

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Curriculum-based measurement (CBM) is an assessment technique that has become increasingly popular in schools, gaining importance with the recent national emphasis on school and teacher accountability for student achievement. CBM is used to monitor student performance to provide an indicator of which students are at-risk of not achieving grade level standards and thus are in need of intervention. CBM is easy to administer, utilizes standard procedures, and provides measures indicative of general achievement in various domains. The utility of CBM to measure student ability in writing has been well-established. However, there is a paucity of technical adequacy research for writing …

Achieving Cultural Competency With Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender (Lgbt) Patients Through Application Of Carper's Fundamental Patterns Of Knowing In Nursing, Joseph R. Giancola

General Submissions: Community and Population-based Materials

Vulnerable groups with respect to health care are those susceptible to heightened adverse physical, psychological, or sociological health because of their particular status within society (De Chesnay & Anderson, 2008). Nurses and other health care professionals who work with non-institutionalized patients regularly provide care for members of vulnerable groups (Bailey, 2010). "Vulnerable populations include individuals living in poverty, those having immigrant status, people of color, and people who are marginalized by their sexual preference and/or religion" (Bailey, 2010, p. 55).

Essays On Dividend Equivalent Rights And Ceo Compensation, Zi Jia Jan 2014

Essays On Dividend Equivalent Rights And Ceo Compensation, Zi Jia

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation studies a little-known executive compensation device called dividend equivalent rights (DERs). DERs entitle an executive to receive dividends, known as dividend equivalents (DEs), on unearned performance-based stocks and options. In the first essay we do empirical studies on the market reaction of news about DERs and the incentives that DERs can bring. We find that about 22% of S&P500 firms allow for these payments and about 10% actually make such payments. While investors react negatively to announcements of DE payments, DERs can be beneficial to shareholders by inducing a company to disgorge unproductive cash. If a firm allows …

International Trade With Increasing Returns In The Transportation Sector, Haiwen Zhou Jan 2014

International Trade With Increasing Returns In The Transportation Sector, Haiwen Zhou

Economics Faculty Publications

In this general equilibrium framework, the transportation sector is modeled as a distinct sector with increasing returns. A more advanced technology has a higher fixed cost but a lower marginal cost of production. Even with both manufacturing firms and transportation firms engaged in oligopolistic competition and optimally choosing their technologies, the model is tractable and results are derived analytically. Technology adoptions in the manufacturing sector and transportation sector are reinforcing, and multiple equilibria may exist. Firms choose more advanced technologies and the prices decrease when the size of the population is larger.

Rfra Exemptions From The Contraception Mandate: An Unconstitutional Accommodation Of Religion, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Rebecca G. Van Tassell Jan 2014

Rfra Exemptions From The Contraception Mandate: An Unconstitutional Accommodation Of Religion, Frederick Mark Gedicks, Rebecca G. Van Tassell

Faculty Scholarship

Litigation surrounding use of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act to exempt employers from the Affordable Care Act’s “contraception mandate” is moving steadily towards resolution in the U.S. Supreme Court. Both opponents and supporters of the mandate, however, have overlooked the Establishment Clause limits on such exemptions.

The heated religious-liberty rhetoric aimed at the mandate has obscured that RFRA is a “permissive” rather than “mandatory” accommodation of religion — a government concession to religious belief and practice that is not required by the Free Exercise Clause. Permissive accommodations must satisfy Establishment Clause constraints, notably the requirement that the accommodation not impose …

The Impact Of A Freshmen-Year Seminar On Students' Second-Year Retention, Lori Henry Richard Jan 2014

Retention was determined based on a student’s subsequent enrollment at the university, one year after their initial semester. In addition, this study explored the relationship between selected independent variables found in literature and second-year retention. Finally, the study sought to determine if selected variables, completion of UNIV 101, and final letter grade earned by students in UNIV 101 was able to predict the probability of retention. The target population for this study was all first-time freshmen enrolled in a small, public, regional institution in …

Adaptive Divergence And Speciation Across Depth In A Caribbean Candelabrum Coral, Carlos Andrés Prada Montoya Jan 2014

Adaptive Divergence And Speciation Across Depth In A Caribbean Candelabrum Coral, Carlos Andrés Prada Montoya

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Since Darwin, biologists wonder how organisms cope with environmental variation, why there are so many species, and how species form. In my dissertation, I explore how species of long-lived, clonal reef organisms originate across depth gradients. In Chapter 2, I evaluate the strength of depth to isolate populations by comparing the genes and morphologies of pairs of depth-segregated populations of the candelabrum coral Eunicea flexuosa across the Caribbean. Eunicea flexuosa is a long-lived clonal cnidarian that associates with an alga of the genus Symbiodinium. Genetic analysis revealed two depth-segregated lineages, each genetically well-mixed across the Caribbean. Survivorship data, combined with …

Becoming A Sex Offender: A Study Of Constitution At The Intersection Of The Mental Health And Legal Systems, Jessica Callanan Jan 2014

Becoming A Sex Offender: A Study Of Constitution At The Intersection Of The Mental Health And Legal Systems, Jessica Callanan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This research conceptualizes "sex offender" as an institutional category. The purpose of this research is to show how people become constituted as sex offenders in the context of the two systems that make demands of them: the mental health and legal systems. These systems view sex offenders in ways that contradict, in that they are viewed as sick by the mental health system and as criminal or bad by the legal system. As a result, the demands these systems make contradict and at times impose double binds on the people who have to navigate them. The data I collected demonstrate …

Effect Of An Experiential Learning Model For Simulation Design On Clinical Nursing Judgment Development In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Joyce Victor Chmil Jan 2014

Effect Of An Experiential Learning Model For Simulation Design On Clinical Nursing Judgment Development In Pre-Licensure Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Joyce Victor Chmil

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is an experiential learning process used in nursing education to develop and evaluate competencies, including clinical judgment (Berragan, 2011; Jeffries, 2012), yet the effectiveness of simulation in nursing education is not sufficiently evaluated (Foronda, Liu, & Bauman, 2013) and simulation design is not adequately theory-based (Kaakinen & Arwood, 2009; Rourke, Schmidt, & Garga, 2010; Jeffries, 2012; Rodgers, 2013). In this study, Kolb's Model of Experiential Learning (Kolb, 1984; 1999) was employed to create an experiential learning simulation design. A quasi-experimental study was used to test the effects of this new design on clinical nursing judgment development and its relationship …

Painful Conversions: Reading And Writing Education Reform In Louisiana, Thomas George Sowders Jan 2014

Painful Conversions: Reading And Writing Education Reform In Louisiana, Thomas George Sowders

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In January 2013, the superintendent of a rural Louisiana school system initiated a plan to increase school choice in his district through the implementation of a new virtual magnet school and the conversion of an existing elementary school into a magnet school. Both plans were set into action in April 2013. This study uses performative writing to document the better part of a year spent engaged in this project as a contracted educational consultant. Melding William Blake’s theories of apocalypse and social metonymy with experimental modes of scholarly production as praxis, I theorize education reform as an interactive performance. By …

Molecular Evolution Of Hominoid Primates: Phylogeny And Regulation, Ranajit Das Jan 2014

Molecular Evolution Of Hominoid Primates: Phylogeny And Regulation, Ranajit Das

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The complete mtDNA of one eastern gorilla was sequenced to provide the most accurate date for the mitochondrial divergence of gorillas. The most recent common ancestor of eastern lowland and western lowland gorillas existed about 1.9 million years ago, slightly more recent than that of chimpanzee and bonobo. This study also depicts that the eastern and western gorillas show species level genetic divergence.

Hominoid mating systems differ tremendously. The level of sperm competition varies according to the mating system, which presumably imposes unique selective pressures on the seminal proteins of each species. Cartilage acidic protein 1 (CRTAC1) was identified in …

Impact Of Preschool Education On The Academic Achievement Of Low Socio-Economic Status Elementary Students, Gary Dawson Jan 2014

Impact Of Preschool Education On The Academic Achievement Of Low Socio-Economic Status Elementary Students, Gary Dawson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if attending a four-year-old preschool program had an impact on the academic achievement of elementary age students. With limited funding and the demands of No Child Left Behind legislation, schools are constantly evaluating the effectiveness and cost of ongoing programming. In addition, educational literature points to school readiness as a significant indicator of future student academic success. With this in mind, this study investigated the impact of preschool attendance on student standardized reading and math test scores throughout the elementary age school experience.

The population for this study was comprised of current …
