The Integration Of Coastal Flooding Into An Arcflood Data Model, Alison Heidi Nock
The Integration Of Coastal Flooding Into An Arcflood Data Model, Alison Heidi Nock
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
With the impact of global climate change, the speedy, intelligent and accessible dissemination of coastal flood predictions from a number of modelling tools at a range of temporal and spatial scales becomes increasingly important for policy decision makers. This thesis provides a novel approach to integrate the coastal flood data into an ArcFLOOD data model to improve the analysis, assessment and mitigation of the potential flood risk in coastal zones. This novel methodology has improved the accessibility, dissemination and visualisation of coastal flood risk. The results were condensed into spatial information flows, data model schematic diagrams and XML schema for …
A History Of The Cornish Male Voice Choir: The Relationship Between Music, Place And Culture, Susan Margaret Skinner
A History Of The Cornish Male Voice Choir: The Relationship Between Music, Place And Culture, Susan Margaret Skinner
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis documents and examines the history of Cornish male voice choirs from their origins in the late nineteenth century through to the present day. The evolution of the choirs has hitherto been charted largely through scattered oral testimonies, whereas this work traces the rise, decline and resurgence of the male choral tradition by drawing from a range of primary sources, including newspapers and repertoire in addition to oral history. The thesis is organised chronologically and the main chapters chart the development of Cornish male voice choirs from the Methodist point of origin, to the subsequent expansion of the male …
Challenging Fragmentation: Overcoming The Subject-Object Divide Through The Integration Of Art-Making And Material Culture Studies, Andrew Cope
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This practice-led thesis explores ways in which to integrate art and material culture studies as a manifestation of philosophy’s process thread. In doing so, its goal is to generate a praxis which is able to come to holistic terms with the fragmenting dualism of subject-object binaries. By seizing my own subjectivity in its representation of this problem, the thesis develops a performance-led practice which seeks to overcome the barriers that its divisive ‘I’ presents to process. This interdisciplinary project is an explicit response to the figure of Friedrich Nietzsche; his bearing helps to constitute its methodology and repertoire as his …
Between Selves And Others: Exploring Strategic Approaches Within Visual Art, Teresa Chen
Between Selves And Others: Exploring Strategic Approaches Within Visual Art, Teresa Chen
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This body of research investigates how visual artists express ideas or meanings about Otherness and issues of belonging in their art. The focus of this study is on women artists with an (East) Asian diasporic background; however, the context of the inquiry includes other American and European artists of various cultural backgrounds. A further aim is to explore the artistic strategies and the historical circumstances of the works as well as to understand the theoretical correlations. The author of this study is a visual artist who has been exploring similar issues in her own artistic practice. In order to examine …
Tracing The Compositional Process. Sound Art That Rewrites Its Own Past: Formation, Praxis And A Computer Framework, Hanns Holger Rutz
Tracing The Compositional Process. Sound Art That Rewrites Its Own Past: Formation, Praxis And A Computer Framework, Hanns Holger Rutz
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The domain of this thesis is electroacoustic computer-based music and sound art. It investigates a facet of composition which is often neglected or ill-defined: the process of composing itself and its embedding in time. Previous research mostly focused on instrumental composition or, when electronic music was included, the computer was treated as a tool which would eventually be subtracted from the equation. The aim was either to explain a resultant piece of music by reconstructing the intention of the composer, or to explain human creativity by building a model of the mind. Our aim instead is to understand composition as …
Mi9'S Escape And Evasion Mapping Programme 1939-1945, Barbara A. Bond
Mi9'S Escape And Evasion Mapping Programme 1939-1945, Barbara A. Bond
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis examines the programme of mapping produced on silk, and other fabric, by MI9 to facilitate the escape and evasion of British military personnel during World War II. It considers the creation of MI9 in December 1939, the rationale for the new military intelligence branch and the context of the history of military mapping on silk. The map production programme is described, together with its progress and the challenges faced. The various groups of maps are identified and described, together with the source maps on which they were based. This description is developed in nine appendices produced as an …
Facing Experience: A Painter's Canvas In Virtual Reality, Margaret Dolinsky
Facing Experience: A Painter's Canvas In Virtual Reality, Margaret Dolinsky
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This research investigates how shifts in perception might be brought about through the development of visual imagery created by the use of virtual environment technology. Through a discussion of historical uses of immersion in art, this thesis will explore how immersion functions and why immersion has been a goal for artists throughout history. It begins with a discussion of ancient cave drawings and the relevance of Plato’s Allegory of the Cave. Next it examines the biological origins of “making special.” The research will discuss how this concept, combined with the ideas of “action” and “reaction,” has reinforced the view that …
Ludwig Wittgenstein & Gertrude Stein – Meeting In Language, Tine Melzer
Ludwig Wittgenstein & Gertrude Stein – Meeting In Language, Tine Melzer
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Tine Melzer: Ludwig Wittgenstein & Gertrude Stein – Meeting in Language The purpose of this study is to show transitions between verbal and visual meaning in ordinary language, based on philosophical concepts and conceptual artworks. It offers models for artistic research and collaboration in arts and science. Shared experiences in ordinary language are fundamental to this thesis and make it an accessible and trans-disciplinary study. Language as such, is approached from different practices and disciplines and becomes the central object of investigation. The research introduces a general set of mechanisms in language, stemming from the Wittgensteinian notion of the language-game. …
Towards Sustainable Middle Eastern Cities: A Local Sustainability Assessment Framework, Mustafa Al-Alwani
Towards Sustainable Middle Eastern Cities: A Local Sustainability Assessment Framework, Mustafa Al-Alwani
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The construction of a guiding methodological framework for local sustainability assessment is a key to achieving a sustainable future. This study develops an approach to local sustainability assessment (ALSA), a methodological framework that facilitates the formulation, selection and prioritisation of key indicators to guide the assessment of city sustainability at a local level in Middle Eastern cities. Based on a literature review, this research devised a methodological framework, ALSA, which is a combination of the Commission on Sustainable Development’s (CSD)Theme Indicator Framework (2001) (themes, sub themes and indicators) and a Goal-Based Framework (indicators that most directly reflect the issues of …
Incumbency Effects In English Local Elections 1974-2010: Assessing The Advantage Of Electoral Defence, Michael Thomas Eugeniusz Turner
Incumbency Effects In English Local Elections 1974-2010: Assessing The Advantage Of Electoral Defence, Michael Thomas Eugeniusz Turner
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The study of electoral defence and its stated advantages are an integral part of American political science. Post-war, much academic literature has emerged in an attempt to identify and explain rising re-election rates of congressional incumbents and the political consequences of such a phenomenon (Mayhew 1974; Fiorina 1977; Cain, Ferejohn & Fiorina 1987; Gelman & King 1990; King 1991). Conversely, the study of political incumbency in Britain can be attributed to a handful of scholars who tend to consider the repercussions at parliamentary level (Williams 1967, King 1981, Cain, Ferejohn and Fiorina 1984, Norton 1990 & 1994, Norris, Valance & …
Perceiving Voids: Memory And Sight Afflictions In Contemporary Cinema, Francesco Marineo
Perceiving Voids: Memory And Sight Afflictions In Contemporary Cinema, Francesco Marineo
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My thesis focuses on the perceptive afflictions caused by alteration of the normal biological functioning of sight and memory. These afflictions are related to the redefinition and disgregation of the classical and postclassical cinematographic characters, and affect cinematographic language, establishing a dialectical relation with the filmic image that contaminates our spectatorial perception. In the first chapter I propose a different reading of a few moments in film history, turning points in which a modification of the ordinary sensorial patterns has been introduced. From the German Expressionism to the late authorial experiments of the 60s, there is a sort of hidden …
On The Evolution Of The Heavenly Spheres: An Enactive Approach To Cosmography, David Mcconville
On The Evolution Of The Heavenly Spheres: An Enactive Approach To Cosmography, David Mcconville
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The ability to view the world from multiple perspectives is essential for tackling complex, interconnected challenges. Yet conventional academic structures are designed to produce knowledge through ever-increasing specialization and compartmentalization. This fragmentation is often reinforced by tacit dualistic assumptions that prioritize linear thinking and abstract ways of knowing. Though the need for integrated approaches has been widely acknowledged, effective techniques for transcending disciplinary boundaries remain elusive. This thesis describes a practical strategy that uses immersive visualizations to cultivate transdisciplinary perspectives. It develops an enactive approach to cosmography, contending that processes of visualizing and interpreting the cosmos iteratively shape ‘views’ of …
Puncturing The Silence: Painting Over The Found Photograph, Sarah Lesley Chapman
Puncturing The Silence: Painting Over The Found Photograph, Sarah Lesley Chapman
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Set up as a visual investigation, the research explores how the addition of paint and graphite materials onto the surface of found and discarded photographs, creates a visual and conceptual disjuncture by punctuating and altering the temporal frame of the photograph. The research is positioned in relation to Susan Sontag’s description in On Photography (1977) as to how the photograph can at once “transfix” and “anesthetize” the subject matter, which through the passage of time serves to create an “aesthetic distance,” and Roland Barthes’ observation in Camera Lucida (1980) that the photograph is “platitudinous.” The tendency to project nostalgic sentiment …
Creative Responses To Maltese Culture And Identity: Case Study And Portfolio Of Compositions, Mariella Cassar
Creative Responses To Maltese Culture And Identity: Case Study And Portfolio Of Compositions, Mariella Cassar
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The aim of this thesis is to explore the relationship between place, identity and musical practice. The study is inspired by Malta’s history and culture. This work presents a portfolio of seven musical compositions with a written component that highlights the historical and socio-cultural issues that had a bearing on the works presented. A case study of the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri is also provided. Camilleri is both a great example of a composer for whom the articulation of national identity was a primary concern and a constant source of inspiration for the author of this thesis. The pieces presented …
Outline Of A Subversive Technopoetic: For A Libertarian Pedartgogy, Francesco Monico
Outline Of A Subversive Technopoetic: For A Libertarian Pedartgogy, Francesco Monico
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The thesis explores the relationships between knowledge and knowing in contemporary 21st century information society, using the foundation of the Faculty of Media Design & New Media Art at the Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Milano as a research apparatus. This Faculty was established between 2003 and 2012, in Milano, Italy. The starting point of the research was established in the hypothesis that technics have tertiarised memory (Stiegler B., 1994), that knowledge is always founded on an ontological pessimism (Queneau R., 1933, Lyotard F., 1979) and on a perpetual process of the generation of meaning (Gadda C., 1923-29, Foucault …
The Impact Of Terrain On British Operations And Doctrine In North Africa 1940-1943., Neal Dando
The Impact Of Terrain On British Operations And Doctrine In North Africa 1940-1943., Neal Dando
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis focuses on the extent to which the physical terrain features across Egypt, Libya and Tunisia affected British operations throughout the campaign in North Africa during the Second World War. The study analyses the terrain from the operational and tactical perspectives and argues that the landscape features heavily influenced British planning and operations. These should now be considered alongside other standard military factors when studying military operations. This thesis differs from previous studies as it considers these additional factors from June 1940 until the Axis surrender in May 1943. Until now it has been widely assumed that much of …
An Exploration Of How The Social Supply And User-Dealer Supply Of Illicit Drugs Differs To Conventional Notions Of Drug Dealing And Consideration Of The Consequences Of This For Sentencing Policy, Leah Moyle
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The concept of ‘social supply’ has emerged as a term used both in the UK, and internationally, to describe drug distribution that is non-commercially motivated and almost exclusively found between friends and acquaintances. Social suppliers have increasingly been presented as actors who are qualitatively different to drug dealers (proper), in relation to their motivation and their activity. As a result, they have increasingly become identified as a group who should be distinguished as such legally (Police Foundation, 2000; Release, 2009). While social supply behaviours can be identified in wider research literature relating to recreational drug use, there is a relative …
The British Way Of War In North West Europe 1944-45: A Study Of Two Infantry Divisions, Louis Paul Devine
The British Way Of War In North West Europe 1944-45: A Study Of Two Infantry Divisions, Louis Paul Devine
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis will examine the British way of war as experienced by two British Infantry Divisions - the 43rd ‘Wessex’ and 53rd ‘Welsh’ - during the Overlord campaign in North West Europe in 1944 and 1945. The main locus of research centres on the fighting components of those divisions; the infantry battalions and their supporting regiments. In order to understand the way the British fought this part of the war, the thesis will consider the British Army’s history since 1918: its level of expertise at the end of the First World War; the impact of inter-war changes, and the experience …
Blackshirts And White Wigs: Reflections On Public Order Law And The Political Activism Of The British Union Of Fascists, Iain Channing
Blackshirts And White Wigs: Reflections On Public Order Law And The Political Activism Of The British Union Of Fascists, Iain Channing
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
While domestic fascism within the United Kingdom has never critically challenged Parliamentary sovereignty, it has decisively disrupted public order since its roots were established in the inter-war political scene. The violence provoked by Sir Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists (BUF) was one of the stimulating factors behind the enactment of the Public Order Act 1936. This Act significantly strengthened the powers of the police to regulate or proscribe varies forms of political activism. This thesis analyses the legal responses of Parliament, the police and the judiciary to interwar British fascism. In addition, by analysing the legal responses to public …
Northeast Asian Containerised Maritime Logistics: Supply Chain Collaboration, Collaborative Advantage And Performance, Young-Joon Seo
Northeast Asian Containerised Maritime Logistics: Supply Chain Collaboration, Collaborative Advantage And Performance, Young-Joon Seo
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis aims to develop and validate the dimensions of supply chain collaboration and collaborative advantage in the containerised maritime industry and explores the impact of supply chain collaboration on collaborative advantage and port performance. Additionally, this thesis tests a mediation effect of collaborative advantage on the relationship between supply chain collaboration and port performance. This thesis employs a quantitative method. A theoretical model is built based on thorough literature reviews of supply chain management and maritime studies, in-depth discussions with experts, item review and Q-sorting techniques to signify ambiguity or misunderstanding with the scales and to suggest modifications. The …
Discourses Pertaining To, And Lived Experiences Of, 'Maternal Obesity' (Body Mass Index (Bmi) ≥ 30) And Gestational Diabetes Mellitus/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus In The Pregnancy And Post-Birth Period., Rachel Juliet Jarvie
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis reports on a qualitative exploration of the experiences of 30 women designated as ‘high risk’ due to the co-existence of ‘maternal obesity’ (BMI ≥ 30) and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)/Type Two Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) in pregnancy. This is examined in the context of medico-scientific/public health/ popular media discourses pertaining to ‘maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy. ‘Maternal obesity’/GDM/T2DM in pregnancy are increasingly prevalent and clinically associated in manifold ways. Increasing prevalence is linked to the ‘global epidemic’ of ‘obesity’/diabetes: now commonly referred to as ‘diabesity’. Current biomedical knowledge asserts ‘maternal obesity’ and diabetes (‘maternal diabesity’) synergise in causing adverse pregnancy …
An Investigation Of The Coherence Of Instrumental Accumulation, Using A Sculptural Methodology, Nicola Ann Gilmour
An Investigation Of The Coherence Of Instrumental Accumulation, Using A Sculptural Methodology, Nicola Ann Gilmour
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis questions the coherence of modes of fabrication that introduce materials to a living context, in forms that resist the processes of biological change. In doing so this project explores the ideologies embedded in fabrication that have led to this current position. The implications of an accumulation of materials being recognized as an autonomous object, and treated as if they are detached from their environment are also expanded. The sculptural methodology used to undertake this investigation has used the feature of materiality and it’s behaviours, of both human fabrication and the living environment, as a means to explore processes …
A Reconsideration Of The Interpretation And Analysis Typically Applied To Edward Hopper’S Art During The 1940s, Ana-Ciara Evelini Ulamoleka
A Reconsideration Of The Interpretation And Analysis Typically Applied To Edward Hopper’S Art During The 1940s, Ana-Ciara Evelini Ulamoleka
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This study aims to reframe the consideration and appreciation of Edward Hopper’s art focusing on the 1940s. The thesis proposes that Hopper should be categorised as a Modernist. This notion was explored by selecting and critically evaluating literature and original paintings by Hopper. The literature utilised for this research included: materials covering the social, political and economic circumstances of post-depression America, Art Historical critique of Hopper’s work and life, and the philosophical theories which influenced Modernism at the time. These theories, in particular Existentialism and Feminist writing, are here applied to Hopper’s own work. The research provided evidence to support …
'[email protected]', An Auto/Biographical Study Of Relationships With Food., Julie Parsons
'[email protected]', An Auto/Biographical Study Of Relationships With Food., Julie Parsons
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Popular discourses and current government policy focus on the need for individuals and families to make healthy food choices, without acknowledging the social and cultural milieu in which these are embedded. A neo-liberal focus on responsible individualism is part of a middle class habitus that ensures foodwork and foodplay are located within distinct heteronormative cultural fields. In my thesis I explore narratives from seventy-five mainly middle class respondents who engaged in a series of asynchronous online interviews over nine months beginning in November 2010. The themes that emerged aligned with public policy debates on the family, healthy eating, eating disorders, …

Legal Risk Associated With Electronic Funds Transfer, Samahir Abdulah
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The past thirty years have seen rapid advances in the technological component of banking services and as a consequence new legal issues have come to the fore, especially with regard to Electronic Fund Transfers (EFTs) which are now used to transfer money around the world, and have made fund transactions between payers and payees easier, faster and more secure. The method involves risks for both banks and customers, due to the possibility of unauthorized payments risks, credit and insolvency problems, and confidentiality issues. Most contracts and obligations now depend on the new technology, although there is a variety of methods …

Re-Evaluating Rural Environments: Rural Tourism Development In Japan, Megumi Doshita
Re-Evaluating Rural Environments: Rural Tourism Development In Japan, Megumi Doshita
Journal of Tourism Consumption and Practice
The beautiful scenery of rural environments has been created by the agricultural and forestry industries but nowadays, in various rural areas, tourism has become lucrative and has developed as a leading industry. When the utilisation of rural environments is evaluated by focusing on the term ‘resources,’ several key aspects in which rural environments are recognised as tourism resources are revealed. In addition, concerning the nature of resources, rural environments utilised for tourism practices are symbolic rather than ecological resources. In Japan, there are three catalysts for transforming rural elements into tourism resources. These transformations are actualised by the expansion of …
