Closing The Doors To Justice: A Critique Of Pimentel V. Dreyfus And The Application Of Legal Formalism To The Elimination Of Food Assistance Benefits For Legal Immigrants, Hannah Zommick Nov 2014

Closing The Doors To Justice: A Critique Of Pimentel V. Dreyfus And The Application Of Legal Formalism To The Elimination Of Food Assistance Benefits For Legal Immigrants, Hannah Zommick

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment contends that the Ninth Circuit’s opinion in Pimentel v. Dreyfus employed a legal formalist approach and that by applying this framework, the court prevented legal immigrants, who were caught between the strict eligibility restrictions of welfare reform, from asserting their rights through the justice system. The legal formalist approach “treats the law as a set of scientific formulae or principles that are derived from the study of case law. These principles create an internal analytical framework which, when applied to a set of facts, leads the decision maker, through logical deduction, to the correct outcome in a case.” …

Oil And Gas In America's Arctic Ocean: Past Problems Counsel Precaution, Michael Levine, Peter Van Tuyn, Layla Hughes

Seattle University Law Review

This Article provides context for the controversy facing government agencies charged with making decisions about the future of America’s Arctic Ocean. It then distill themes that, if addressed, could help further a lasting solution for this region that respects its natural and human values while crafting a reasonable path forward for decisions about development. First, this Article offers background about the region, the threats facing it, and some of the challenges in managing the natural resources there. Second, it provides an overview of the legal framework through which the United States government makes decisions about whether and under what conditions …

Student Training In A University Setting Voice Clinic- How Do We Do It?, Chaya D. Nanjundeswaran (Guntupalli), Celia Bassich, Robin Samlan

ETSU Faculty Works

This presentation will discuss the challenges that clinical supervisors face when trying to balance efficient graduate student training and patient welfare in university voice clinics. We will propose a model in which we seek to balance the needs of the patient, student clinician, and clinical instructor.

The Number Of Framings Of A Knot In A 3-Manifold, Patricia Cahn, Vladimir Chernov, Rustam Sadykov Nov 2014

The Number Of Framings Of A Knot In A 3-Manifold, Patricia Cahn, Vladimir Chernov, Rustam Sadykov

Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications

In view of the self-linking invariant, the number |K| of framed knots in S3 with given underlying knot K is infinite. In fact, the second author previously defined affine self-linking invariants and used them to show that |K| is infinite for every knot in an orientable manifold unless the manifold contains a connected sum factor of S1 × S2; the knot K need not be zero-homologous and the manifold is not required to be compact. We show that when M is orientable, the number |K| is infinite unless K intersects a nonseparating sphere at exactly one point, in which case …

The Pain Of (Organisational) Change, Philomena Hanlon Nov 2014

The Pain Of (Organisational) Change, Philomena Hanlon

Conference papers

Abstract

Ireland is the third most globalised nation in the world - Ernest and Young 2013 report

This reflective paper addresses key drivers of organisational change (including globalisation as referred to in the quote above) and what this means at the level of the organisation and at the level of the Lacanian subject[1] (individual employee). It looks at strategies organisations are adopting to survive in a hyper competitive environment and how these strategies are interpreted / responded to by the subject. The paper utilises a Freudian / Lacanian lens to interrogate subjective responses to organisational change. For some subjects …

An Optical Tracking System For Radiosurgery Of Uveal Melanoma By Cyberknife, Hairong Chen Nov 2014

An Optical Tracking System For Radiosurgery Of Uveal Melanoma By Cyberknife, Hairong Chen

Open Access Dissertations

Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular tumor in adults. One of the effective managements of ocular melanoma is the localized radiation treatment. In addition to the commonly performed invasive radioactive plaque brachytherapy, using focused external photon radiations, x-rays or gamma rays, have emerged as treatment options. However, these radiation delivery methods are either involved with the invasive surgical operation or limited by the gantry movement to account for the involuntary movement of the eyeball. The goal of this doctoral research is to design and validate a method that can offer a non-invasive radiosurgery for uveal melanoma and to …

The Oestrogen Receptor Alpha-Regulated Lncrna Neat1 Is A Critical Modulator Of Prostate Cancer, Dimple Chakravarty, Andrea Sboner, Sujit S. Nair, Eugenia Giannopoulou, Ruohan Li, +16 Additional Authors

Biochemistry and Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The androgen receptor (AR) plays a central role in establishing an oncogenic cascade that drives prostate cancer progression. Some prostate cancers escape androgen dependence and are often associated with an aggressive phenotype. The oestrogen receptor alpha (ERα) is expressed in prostate cancers, independent of AR status. However, the role of ERα remains elusive. Using a combination of chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and RNA-sequencing data, we identified an ERα-specific non-coding transcriptome signature. Among putatively ERα-regulated intergenic long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), we identified nuclear enriched abundant transcript 1 (NEAT1) as the most significantly overexpressed lncRNA in prostate cancer. Analysis of two large clinical …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Recent meta-analyses have found no association between heart disease and dietary saturated fat; however, higher proportions of plasma saturated fatty acids (SFA) predict greater risk for developing type-2 diabetes and heart disease. These observations suggest a disconnect between dietary saturated fat and plasma SFA, but few controlled feeding studies have specifically examined how varying saturated fat intake across a broad range affects circulating SFA levels. Sixteen adults with metabolic syndrome (age 44.9±9.9 yr, BMI 37.9±6.3 kg/m2) were fed six 3-wk diets that progressively increased carbohydrate (from 47 to 346 g/day) with concomitant decreases in total and saturated fat. Despite a …

Perceived Leadership Qualities As Hiring Criteria For Athletic Trainers At Ncaa Institutions In The Southeast Region Of The United States, Katherine Ann Gonzalez Nov 2014

Perceived Leadership Qualities As Hiring Criteria For Athletic Trainers At Ncaa Institutions In The Southeast Region Of The United States, Katherine Ann Gonzalez

Student Theses and Dissertations

In sport organizations, those in authority such as athletic directors and athletic trainers should possess concrete leadership styles in order to maintain effectiveness of the organization (Kickul & Newman, 2000). Hiring employees that possess similar or compatible leadership attributes to the employer will help produce a positive, productive workplace. The purpose of this study was to evaluate hiring criteria characteristics in assistant athletic trainers at NCAA institutions in the Southeast Athletic Trainers' Association and to assess leadership qualities as main determinants for hiring. The 138 head athletic trainers at Divisions I, II, and III NCAA institutions that make up the …

The Tweeting Of The U.S. Senate: Content Analyses Of Usage, Messaging, And Strategies By U.S. Senators On Twitter, Josh Bramlett

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study examined Twitter use in the U.S. Senate. It focused on Twitter activity during the 2014 August recess and was conceptualized by focusing on previous research of political communication in areas such as television advertising and Internet use by politicians. Through two phases of content analysis, research questions about the adoption, usage, and strategies of Twitter accounts representing U.S. senators were examined. In the first phase of content analysis, the researcher found that all 100 senators had at least one Twitter account but the usage varied. In the second phase of content analysis, 1072 tweets from the campaign and …
