Biological Control Of Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis Invicta) Using Pseudacteon (Diptera: Phoridae) In Central Arkansas, Sim Mckague Barrow
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Red imported fire ants are major pests in the southeastern United States. As a part of an integrated pest management strategy, a biological control program has been implemented which includes Pseudacteon decapitating flies. These flies are parasitoids of fire ant workers and two species of Pseudacteon are established in Arkansas: Pseudacteon tricuspis and Pseudacteon curvatus. Pseudacteon cultellatus and P. obtusus were released in the spring and fall of 2013. Despite sampling throughout 2014, establishment cannot be confirmed. Two phorid fly sampling methods, hand aspirating and sticky traps, were studied. A vacuum aspirator was compared with two sticky trap configurations. Sticky …
Examining Employees' Perceptions Of Energy Conservation Behaviors In Office Settings, Michele Belmont Halsell
Examining Employees' Perceptions Of Energy Conservation Behaviors In Office Settings, Michele Belmont Halsell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The estimates for potential energy and greenhouse gas (GHG) savings in office buildings are significant. Reports show that energy wasting behavior in office buildings such as computers being left on at night and on weekends result in billions of dollars lost annually and GHG's being emitted needlessly. The estimated potential for energy savings ranges from 20 to 50 percent. Despite the potential for significant energy savings, a review of the literature revealed that there are relatively few studies of energy conservation interventions in office buildings. Most of the research on energy conservation has been done in households. There is agreement …

Predicting Employment Intention Of Ssa Beneficiaries: A Theory-Based Approach, James Mather Ii
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Employment has become an integral aspect of American society. Each year, millions of Americans engage in job search as a result of economic conditions, involuntary job loss, completion of their education, or the desire to pursue a new career opportunity. However, the employment reality for persons with disabilities remains stark. In 2012 the employment rate of working-age people with disabilities was 32.7 percent, compared to 73.6 percent for those without disabilities. Given the long-standing employment gap between persons with disabilities and those without disabilities, this exploratory research utilizes the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to predict determinates of Social Security …

This study proposes a hazard/risk index for environmental, technological, and social hazards that may threaten a museum or other place of cultural storage and accession. This index can be utilized and implemented to measure the risk at the locations of these storage facilities in relationship to their geologic, geographic, environmental, and social settings. A model case study of the 1966 flood of the Arno River and its impact on the city of Florence and the Uffizi Gallery was used as the index focus. From this focus an additional eleven museums and their related risk were assessed. Each index addressed a …
The Sacrality Of The Mountain, Manuel Rivera Espinoza
The Sacrality Of The Mountain, Manuel Rivera Espinoza
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I explore the conception of the mountain as a "sacred space" based on the definition provided by Mircea Eliade in The Sacred and The Profane and other works. I recognize three major elements in Eliadean sacral spatiality: a) order and orientation b) liminality and c) reality. Using various sources but mainly the oracle bones inscriptions, the Yugong ("Tributes of Yu") of the Shujing ("Book of Documents") and the Shanjing ("Classic of Mountains") of the Shanhaijing ("Classic of Mountains and Seas"), I demonstrate how the three basic components of sacrality are to be found in each of the …
Integration Of Energy Storage Into A Future Energy System With A High Penetration Of Distributed Photovoltaic Generation, Arthur K. Barnes
Integration Of Energy Storage Into A Future Energy System With A High Penetration Of Distributed Photovoltaic Generation, Arthur K. Barnes
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Energy storage units (ESU) are increasingly used in electrical distribution systems because they can perform many functions compared with traditional equipment. These include peak shaving, voltage regulation, frequency regulation, provision of spinning reserve, and aiding integration of renewable generation by mitigating the effects of intermittency.
As is the case with other equipment on electric distribution systems, it is necessary to follow appropriate methodologies in order to ensure that ESU are installed in a cost-effective manner and their benefits are realized. However, the necessary methodologies for integration of ESU have not kept pace with developments in both ESU and distribution systems. …
It's All In A Meme: A Content Analysis Of Memes Posted To 2012 Presidential Election Facebook Pages, Bobbie Foster
It's All In A Meme: A Content Analysis Of Memes Posted To 2012 Presidential Election Facebook Pages, Bobbie Foster
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis was an exploratory study to understand how Democrats and Republicans design memes, use traditional media framing, and how memes fit into modern humor theories. The study explores the relationship between the traditional media frames of the ideal candidate, populist campaigner, and the sure loser (Grabe & Bucy, 2009) and the commentary added by Internet users to these images in the memes.
The study also applies the benign-violation theory (McGraw & Warren, 2010) to the analysis of memes to understand the design choices made by meme creators. The benign-violation theory states that a physical or psychological violation is benign …
Integration Of Herbicide Programs With Cultural And Mechanical Practices For Managing Glyphosate-Resistant Palmer Amaranth (Amaranthus Palmeri) In Soybean (Glycine Max), Holden Bell
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth is the most troublesome weed in Arkansas row crops, causing producers to rely heavily on multiple mechanisms of action to reduce selection pressure for further evolution of herbicide resistance and to successfully produce a profitable crop. It is critical for the sustainability of weed management not only to adequately control this weed but also to reduce the soil seedbank using both non-chemical and chemical practices. Studies were conducted to determine the effect of soybean row spacing, seeding rate, and herbicide program on Palmer amaranth emergence, survival, and seed production in soybean, the effect of drill-seeded soybean population …
Marketing Mutuality: Boundary Spanning Approaches To Marketing Strategy, Alexander Scott Rose
Marketing Mutuality: Boundary Spanning Approaches To Marketing Strategy, Alexander Scott Rose
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation, arranged in three essays, is grounded firmly in the crossroads of sociology and marketing. Theories of the former inform phenomena of the latter. In particular, the sociological theory of the gift and the rich tradition of anti-utilitarian social science inform contemporary debate regarding the rise of the sharing economy and its much-heralded potential to alter the landscape of the market. Through an ethnography of brand and retail service settings in the particular context of American craft beer festivals, the concept of mutuality is used to provide a line of demarcation between effective and ineffective forms of the sharing …

Technology Mapping, Design For Testability, And Circuit Optimizations For Null Convention Logic Based Architectures, Farhad Alibeygi Parsan
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Delay-insensitive asynchronous circuits have been the target of a renewed research effort because of the advantages they offer over traditional synchronous circuits. Minimal timing analysis, inherent robustness against power-supply, temperature, and process variations, reduced energy consumption, less noise and EMI emission, and easy design reuse are some of the benefits of these circuits. NULL Convention Logic (NCL) is one of the mainstream asynchronous logic design paradigms that has been shown to be a promising method for designing delay-insensitive asynchronous circuits.
This dissertation investigates new areas in NCL design and test and is made of three sections. The first section discusses …
Against Coherence In Statutory Interpretation, John David Ohlendorf
Against Coherence In Statutory Interpretation, John David Ohlendorf
Notre Dame Law Review
A long tradition in legal theory views the judicial role as centrally including the duty to make the entire body of law “speak with one voice.” This coherence ideal permeates much of the law of statutory interpretation, but one body of doctrine that it has particularly influenced is the set of standards that federal courts use to determine when a newly enacted statute overrides preexisting legal rules. Determining whether Congress implicitly intends to preempt state law, repeal previous legislation, or displace federal common law is an increasingly important part of the “ordinary diet of the law.” And although, this Article …
Psychological And Genetic Contributions To The Development Of Social Cognition In Children, Jacqueline Marie Klaver
Psychological And Genetic Contributions To The Development Of Social Cognition In Children, Jacqueline Marie Klaver
Dissertations
This study examined the development of social cognition in children with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as the influence of behavioral and molecular genetics on these higher-order cognitive abilities. Specifically, it was hypothesized that children with ASD would perform more poorly on all social cognitive tasks compared with typically developing peers. In addition, it was hypothesized that typically developing children who performed better on a simpler social cognitive task at ages 3 or 4 would perform better at follow-up (i.e., one time between the ages of 6-10). Lastly, it was hypothesized that children who had at least …

Paper People And Digital Memory: Recreating The Public And Private In Japan, Meghan Sarah Fidler
Dissertations
This research examines how reading and writing on digital platforms establishes public and private spheres in Tokyo, Japan. Based upon findings from a group of students at an international University, I develop new modes of thinking about people and their use of Internet capable devices by exploring the paradoxes present in contemporary literacies. Contextualizing reading and writing within the speech patterns and exchange rituals (aisatsu) which mark public spheres in Japan, writing practices are found to reflect multiple nuanced identity performances in which the varied use of the cultural principles uchi/soto (inside/outside) and ura/omote (back/front) create parallel publics. Constructed by …
Low-Power Low-Voltage Analog Circuit Techniques For Wireless Sensors, Chenglong Zhang
Low-Power Low-Voltage Analog Circuit Techniques For Wireless Sensors, Chenglong Zhang
Dissertations
This research investigates lower-power lower-voltage analog circuit techniques suitable for wireless sensor applications. Wireless sensors have been used in a wide range of applications and will become ubiquitous with the revolution of internet of things (IoT). Due to the demand of low cost, miniature desirable size and long operating cycle, passive wireless sensors which don't require battery are more preferred. Such sensors harvest energy from energy sources in the environment such as radio frequency (RF) waves, vibration, thermal sources, etc. As a result, the obtained energy is very limited. This creates strong demand for low power, lower voltage circuits. The …

Sensor-Free Corner Shape Detection By Wireless Networks, Yuxi Wang, Zimu Zhou, Kaishun Wu
Sensor-Free Corner Shape Detection By Wireless Networks, Yuxi Wang, Zimu Zhou, Kaishun Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Due to the rapid growth of the smartphone applications and the fast development of the Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), numerous indoor location-based techniques have been proposed during the past several decades. Floorplan, which defines the structure and functionality of a specific indoor environment, becomes a hot topic nowadays. Conventional floorplan techniques leverage smartphone sensors combined with WiFi signals to construct the floorplan of a building. However, existing approaches with sensors cannot detect the shape of a corner, and the sensors cost huge amount of energy during the whole floorplan constructing process. In this paper, we propose a sensor-free approach …

Pads: Passive Detection Of Moving Targets With Dynamic Speed Using Phy Layer Information, Kun Qian, Chenshu Wu, Zheng Yang, Yunhao Liu, Zimu Zhou
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Device-free passive detection is an emerging technology to detect whether there exists any moving entities in the area of interests without attaching any device to them. It is an essential primitive for a broad range of applications including intrusion detection for safety precautions, patient monitoring in hospitals, child and elder care at home, etc. Despite of the prevalent signal feature Received Signal Strength (RSS), most robust and reliable solutions resort to finer-grained channel descriptor at physical layer, e.g., the Channel State Information (CSI) in the 802.11n standard. Among a large body of emerging techniques, however, few of them have explored …

A Metrics Suite Of Cloud Computing Adoption Readiness, Robert J. Kauffman, Dan Ma, Martin Yu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Recent research on cloud computing adoption indicates that there has been a lack of deep understanding of its benefits by managers and organizations. This has been an obstacle for adoption. We report on an initial design for a firm-level cloud computing readiness metrics suite. We propose categories and measures to form a set of metrics to measure adoption readiness and assess the required adjustments in strategy and management, technology and operations, and business policies. We reviewed the relevant interdisciplinary literature and interviewed industry professionals to ground our metrics based on theory and practice knowledge. We identified four relevant categories for …
Probabilistic Latent Document Network Embedding, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Probabilistic Latent Document Network Embedding, Tuan M. V. Le, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
A document network refers to a data type that can be represented as a graph of vertices, where each vertex is associated with a text document. Examples of such a data type include hyperlinked Web pages, academic publications with citations, and user profiles in social networks. Such data have very high-dimensional representations, in terms of text as well as network connectivity. In this paper, we study the problem of embedding, or finding a low-dimensional representation of a document network that "preserves" the data as much as possible. These embedded representations are useful for various applications driven by dimensionality reduction, such …

Detecting Camouflaged Applications On Mobile Application Markets, Mon Kywe Su, Yingjiu Li, Huijie Robert Deng, Jason Hong
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Application plagiarism or application cloning is an emerging threat in mobile application markets. It reduces profits of original developers and sometimes even harms the security and privacy of users. In this paper, we introduce a new concept, called camouflaged applications, where external features of mobile applications, such as icons, screenshots, application names or descriptions, are copied. We then propose a scalable detection framework, which can find these suspiciously similar camouflaged applications. To accomplish this, we apply text-based retrieval methods and content-based image retrieval methods in our framework. Our framework is implemented and tested with 30,625 Android applications from the official …
Extracting Interest Tags From Twitter User Biographies, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Extracting Interest Tags From Twitter User Biographies, Ying Ding, Jing Jiang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Twitter, one of the most popular social media platforms, has been studied from different angles. One of the important sources of information in Twitter is users’ biographies, which are short self-introductions written by users in free form. Biographies often describe users’ background and interests. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been much work trying to extract information from Twitter biographies. In this work, we study how to extract information revealing users’ personal interests from Twitter biographies. A sequential labeling model is trained with automatically constructed labeled data. The popular patterns expressing user interests are extracted and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The operating environment of cellular networks can be in a constant state of change. One Singaporean operator expressed difficulty with the coverage assertion (CA) problem of whether regulated minimum coverage is met, especially in urban areas. Currently, the operator manually appraises coverage through laborious and expensive walk/drive-tests. In this paper, we propose Tattle, a distributed, low-cost and comprehensive cellular network measurement collection and processing framework. We exemplify Tattle by leveraging on participating UEs to report on network coverage in real-time. Tattle exploits wireless local-area interfaces to exchange RSCP measurements amongst devices to preserve the co-locality of readings and conserve power. …

First Amendment Sexual Privacy: Adult Sexting And Federal Age-Verification Legislation, Jennifer M. Kinsley
First Amendment Sexual Privacy: Adult Sexting And Federal Age-Verification Legislation, Jennifer M. Kinsley
New Mexico Law Review
The modern sexting phenomenon amongst adults raises important questions at the intersection of relational privacy, free expression, and federal criminal law. A little-known but long-standing federal statutory scheme—18 USC 2257, 2257A, and the accompanying Attorney General regulations (“Section 2257”)—threatens to criminalize the private exchange of sexual communication between consenting adults. While there has been relatively frequent litigation involving Section 2257 initiated by the commercial adult entertainment industry, courts and scholars alike have been all but silent as to Section 2257’s impact on private, not-for-profit sexual speech. So too has the literature on the legality of sexting focused almost exclusively on …
Advantages Of The One-Client Model In Insurance Defense, Jean Fleming Powers
Advantages Of The One-Client Model In Insurance Defense, Jean Fleming Powers
New Mexico Law Review
This article explores the debate first by describing the one-client and two-client models that are at the heart of the disagreement, and second, by looking at the relationships and obligations that create conflicts and concerns. It explains how the one-client model is consistent with the obligations undertaken in the contract of insurance, better fosters the attorney’s professional obligations, better protects the insured as a consumer of insurance and of legal services, and ultimately better protects the interests of the insurer and the attorney. Finally, this article examines the operation of the one-client model in various problematic situations to illustrate how …
