A Novel Analysis Method For Parallel Processing, Zhemin Zhang Dec 2014

A Novel Analysis Method For Parallel Processing, Zhemin Zhang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Though the divisible load scheduling problem has been studied for over two decades, the optimal solution for this problem can be obtained only in a few network topologies by the approach proposed in [6], which recursively equates multiple processing nodes in the network to a super processing node. The limitation of this equivalent approach lies in the fact that a node is required to finishing receiving load from its neighboring nodes simultaneously under this approach, such that linear equations can be established for all nodes in the network. However, the requirement is satisfied in very few network topologies. In this …

A Teacher's Response To Response, Karen Larson Buechner Dec 2014

A Teacher's Response To Response, Karen Larson Buechner

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This study is an examination of instructional practices teachers implement during the drafting and revision process and contends that armed with knowledge of how a student responds emotionally and intellectually to these comments, a teacher can have a lasting impact on a writer's development. To that end, it is critical for the teacher to possess deep knowledge of response protocols and conferencing techniques in order for students to generate and refine their ideas. Areas of investigation include the relationship between response methods and writing improvement, the type and mode of comments that facilitate improvement, measurement of the effect of response …

Improvising In The Writing Classroom: How Improvisational Acting Transforms Invention In Social And Collaborative Contexts, Lauren Esposito Dec 2014

Improvising In The Writing Classroom: How Improvisational Acting Transforms Invention In Social And Collaborative Contexts, Lauren Esposito

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

When mapped onto writing classrooms, improvisational acting provides students with an emphasis on communal ways of knowing that are not restricted to print alone. Improvisational theater promotes the use of multiple literacies, such as kinesthetic, visual, spatial, and aural intelligences, which supplement conventional print-based strategies in writing instruction. Through speaking, listening, and moving, students collectively produce a text--an improvised performance--that stems from the spontaneous interactions and multiple perspectives of an ensemble. In " Improvising in the Writing Classroom: How Improvisational Acting Transforms Invention in Social and Collaborative Contexts," I argue that employing improv techniques and principles in writing pedagogies advances …

A Current Model For High School Writing Centers, Kimberly Anne Towers Dec 2014

A Current Model For High School Writing Centers, Kimberly Anne Towers

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Academics across the country seem to agree that there is value in the existence of Writing Centers at the University level, but very few exist at the secondary level. Recent test scores demonstrate that more adequate writing instruction needs to be provided to High School students, and this thesis asserts that a Writing Center can answer this call to action. Through an analysis of the founding of a Writing Center in a High School on Long Island, New York, the author displays the strengths as well as shortcomings of inserting a Writing Center into such an environment. She provides a …

" The Vortex Of Enthusiasm" : Religion And The Making Of American Literature, Lawrence Zellner Dec 2014

" The Vortex Of Enthusiasm" : Religion And The Making Of American Literature, Lawrence Zellner

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation explores how the concept of religious enthusiasm shaped American literature and culture from the Revolution through the Civil War. It traces a new narrative of the relation between literature, religion, and public life in this crucial moment of national formation, as languages and narratives of enthusiasm proliferated across a variety of sites and discourses. The ongoing confrontation between the legacy of Enlightenment and a culture being transformed by the experience of revolution and religious revivalism demanded reconsideration of previous conceptions of normative religious experience and the construction of civil society. In the writings of Charles Brockden Brown, Ralph …

L-Asparaginase Ii Produced By S. Typhimurium Inhibits T Cell Responses Through Hydrolysis Of L-Asparagine And Suppression Of Metabolic Reprogramming, Annmarie Torres Dec 2014

L-Asparaginase Ii Produced By S. Typhimurium Inhibits T Cell Responses Through Hydrolysis Of L-Asparagine And Suppression Of Metabolic Reprogramming, Annmarie Torres

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) are pathogenic bacteria that suppress T cell responses to avoid clearance by the immune system, yet the mechanisms that mediate this immunosuppression remain largely unknown. Our laboratory previously showed that L-Asparaginase II produced by S. Typhimurium inhibits T cell responses and mediates virulence. The goal of my dissertation research was to determine the mechanism by which L-Asparaginase II produced by S. Typhimurium inhibits T cell responses. As described in my dissertation, I have found that L-Asparaginase II of S. Typhimurium exhibits L-asparagine hydrolysis activity and that this activity is required for the inhibition of …

Thermal Stress And Predation Risk Trigger Distinct Transcriptomic Responses In The Intertidal Snail Nucella Lapillus, Nathaniel D. Chu, Luke P. Miller, Stefan T. Kaluziak, Geoffrey C. Trussell, Steven V. Vollmer Dec 2014

Thermal Stress And Predation Risk Trigger Distinct Transcriptomic Responses In The Intertidal Snail Nucella Lapillus, Nathaniel D. Chu, Luke P. Miller, Stefan T. Kaluziak, Geoffrey C. Trussell, Steven V. Vollmer

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Thermal stress and predation risk have profound effects on rocky shore organisms, triggering changes in their feeding behaviour, morphology and metabolism. Studies of thermal stress have shown that underpinning such changes in several intertidal species are specific shifts in gene and protein expression (e.g. upregulation of heat-shock proteins). But relatively few studies have examined genetic responses to predation risk. Here, we use next-generation RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to examine the transcriptomic (mRNA) response of the snail Nucella lapillus to thermal stress and predation risk. We found that like other intertidal species, N. lapillus displays a pronounced genetic response to thermal stress …

Nutrition-Related Conditions Among Children Of Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers In The United States: Causes And Solutions, Rebecca Halvorson Dec 2014

Nutrition-Related Conditions Among Children Of Migrant And Seasonal Farmworkers In The United States: Causes And Solutions, Rebecca Halvorson

Food Science and Nutrition

The purpose of this literature review is to determine the prevalence of nutrition-related conditions among children of migrant and seasonal farmworkers (MSFW) compared to national averages, as well as effectiveness of strategies for minimizing any health discrepancies. MSFW live under harsh conditions, engage in long hours of physically demanding labor, and receive insufficient income. Compounding demographic characteristics create insurmountable barriers to quality health care and nutrition education resulting in disproportionately unhealthy children within the MSFW population as compared to the greater US population. The prevalence of overweight, obesity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, and numerous infections is higher among MSFW children. …

Employee's Participation: A Critical Success Factor For Justice Perception, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau Dec 2014

Employee's Participation: A Critical Success Factor For Justice Perception, Wai Kwan (Elaine) Lau

Accounting Faculty Research

The present study proposed and tested a model that examines the relationship between leadership style, employee’s participation, and justice perceptions. The paper extended the literature of the justice by connecting three major research areas (leadership style, employee’s participation, and organizational justice), and examined the influences of leadership style and employee’s participation in shaping employee’s perception of justice. Results indicated that transactional, transformational, and dynamic leadership have positive impact on distributive, procedural, and interactional justice. Moreover, the effect of leadership style on organizational justice was indirect through employee’s participation. This study synthesized previous leadership studies and argued that leadership style can …

Exploring The Invocation Of Emotion In Presidential Speeches, Cengiz Erisen, José Villalobos Dec 2014

Exploring The Invocation Of Emotion In Presidential Speeches, Cengiz Erisen, José Villalobos

Selected Works Temporary Series

Scholars have long explored why presidential rhetoric is important and how it matters for public leadership and policy-making. However, relatively few works have considered the role that emotion plays in leadership communication and no research has conducted a thorough examination of the various types of emotions invoked in presidential rhetoric, their frequency, or how they have shaped presidential discourse over time. In this study, presidential speeches across 13 administrations (1933–2011) are examined to provide a first assessment of the extent to which US presidents have invoked fear, anger, and hope across policy domains and key types of speeches.

Being Hindu In The American South: Hindu Nationalist Discourse In A Diaspora Community, Daniel J. Shouse

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

According to a recent Pew poll approximately 97% of all Hindus live in the countries of India and Nepal. However, there are hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of Hindus living in other parts of the world. Across the United States, Hindu temples are joining the religious landscape of the country. They are often greeted as signifiers of a “model minority” by the mainstream because of Asian American economic success. However, as religious and racial minorities, Indian immigrants and Indian Americans just as frequently face ignorance and discrimination. This rejection by mainstream society, combined with a desire to reconnect with …

In addition, significant differences were found based upon certification area, gender, and age with the sample’s …

In France, the books of Jean Hatzfeld -- journalist and writer -- have played a key role for the public opinion to become aware of the tragedy of the genocide of the Rwandan Tutsi in 1994. Our paper aims to show how the discourse strategy of Jean Hatzfeld aims to influence the reader by using emotions. We would like to know how this rhetoric of emotions relies on specific cultural codes which are largely western centered. Our thesis is that since Auschwitz, those codes have constructed an argumentative framework for contemporary understanding of passion and pain in discourse.
