The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily W. Parento, Laura A. Schmidt Jan 2014

The Increasing Weight Of Regulation: Countries Combat The Global Obesity Epidemic, Allyn L. Taylor, Emily W. Parento, Laura A. Schmidt

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Obesity is a global epidemic, exacting an enormous human and economic toll. In the absence of a comprehensive global governance strategy, states have increasingly employed a wide array of legal strategies targeting the drivers of obesity. This article identifies recent global trends in obesity-related legislation and makes the normative case for an updated global governance strategy.

National governments have responded to the epidemic both by strengthening traditional interventions and by developing novel legislative strategies. This response consists of nine important trends: (1) strengthened and tailored tax measures; (2) broader use of counter-advertising and health campaigns; (3) expanded food labeling; (4) …

Exploring The Relationships Of Bruges, Music, And The Space Between, Isaac Karley Jan 2014

Exploring The Relationships Of Bruges, Music, And The Space Between, Isaac Karley

Architecture Theses

This thesis explores music and art in Bruges, Belgium and how it has shaped the city to become what it is today. It is only through this awareness of the past, and how it relates to the present, that new pieces can be created in such a way that will actively preserve the city’s past culture while simultaneously creating a path for the city to once again be considered a cultural hub of northwestern Europe.

Micropropagation Of The Relict Genus Cercidiphyllum (Cercidiphyllaceae), Craig Henry Carlson Jan 2014

Micropropagation Of The Relict Genus Cercidiphyllum (Cercidiphyllaceae), Craig Henry Carlson

Plant Sciences

Focusing on various aspects of micropropagation with respect to well represented genotypes within Cercidiphyllum, this study is an attempt to broaden the experimental knowledge of the genus. The Tertiary relict Cercidiphyllum (Cercidiphyllaceae) is endemic to Japan and China and consists of two deciduous tree species, common katsura, C. japonicum Sieb. & Zucc. and the hiro-ha-katsura, C. magnificum Nakai. To date, there exists no literature on the in vitro requirements of C. magnificum and limited information on C. japonicum. Prized as specimen trees, the importance of Cercidiphyllum extends beyond its ornamental merit and regarded a multifaceted genetic resource. Subsequent protocols and …

Effects Of Gene Selection And Data Sampling On Prediction Of Breast Cancer Treatments, Brian Heredia Jan 2014

Effects Of Gene Selection And Data Sampling On Prediction Of Breast Cancer Treatments, Brian Heredia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In recent years more and more researchers have begun to use data mining and machine learning tools to analyze gene microarray data. In this thesis we have collected a selection of datasets revolving around prediction of patient response in the specific area of breast cancer treatment. The datasets collected in this paper are all obtained from gene chips, which have become the industry standard in measurement of gene expression. In this thesis we will discuss the methods and procedures used in the studies to analyze the datasets and their effects on treatment prediction with a particular interest in the selection …

Integrating Two-Photon Microscopy And Cryo-Electron Microscopy For Studying The Interaction Of Caféteria Roenbergensis And Crov, Seyedmohammadali Aghvami Jan 2014

Integrating Two-Photon Microscopy And Cryo-Electron Microscopy For Studying The Interaction Of Caféteria Roenbergensis And Crov, Seyedmohammadali Aghvami

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Cafeteria roenbergensis (Cro) is a marine zooplankton; its voracious appetite plays a significant role in regulating bacteria populations. The giant virus that lives within Cro, known as Cafeteria roenbergensis virus (CroV), has an important effect on the mortality of Cro populations. Although viral infections are extremely abundant in oceans, the complete procedure of the infection is still unknown. We study the infection process of Cro by CroV to find out whether the initial contact is through phagocytosis or CroV penetrating the host cell membrane directly. Cro is a moving at speed in the range of 10-100 um/s, therefore, there are …

Part I: An Approach To The Synthesis Of Plakortethers A-E Part Ii: Rhodium-Catalyzed Intramolecular C-H Insertion On Diazosulfonates And Its Synthetic Applications, Duminda Shiromalee Liyanage Jan 2014

Part I: An Approach To The Synthesis Of Plakortethers A-E Part Ii: Rhodium-Catalyzed Intramolecular C-H Insertion On Diazosulfonates And Its Synthetic Applications, Duminda Shiromalee Liyanage

Theses and Dissertations

This research work consists of two independent studies. The first study is the development of a synthetic route to plakortethers A-E along with possible derivatives. The second study focuses on the synthetic applications of rhodium-catalyzed intramolecular C-H insertion on diazosulfonates.

Plakortethers (A-G) represent a set of marine natural products, which contain of a characteristic tetrasubstituted tetrahydrofuran fragment. This group of compounds was isolated from the Caribbean sponge Plakortis simplex. Their selective cytotoxic activity against the RAW 264-7 cell lines (murine macrophage) makes them promising candidates for biological studies and, along with their unusual structure, warrants the synthesis of these natural …

A Novel Assembly Algorithm That Optimizes For Rna-Seq Data, Yi Yang Jan 2014

A Novel Assembly Algorithm That Optimizes For Rna-Seq Data, Yi Yang

Theses and Dissertations

The advent of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology has shown unprecedented promise for accurately identifying and quantifying genomic variants for living organisms. For species whose genome sequences are unknown, the first step of RNA sequencing data analysis is to assemble all short reads. The de Bruijn graph-based algorithms, such as Oases, are usually used for short reads assembly to resolve the issue of computational complexity. However, de Bruijn graph-based assemblers normally generate high error rates when assembling RNA-Seq data. We have developed a novel assembly algorithm that can be used jointly with any other assembly methods for RNA-Seq short reads. The …
