Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie Decesare Cicilline Feb 2014

Streaming Video Resources For Teaching, Learning, And Research, Julie Decesare Cicilline

Library Faculty and Staff papers

In less than 10 years the availability of digitally converted or born digital video, has grown exponentially. Libraries and librarians are constantly navigating, and helping their patrons navigate, this shift from analog to digital. For access to video, our libraries are challenged by an individual consumer marketplace, where institutional access is often limited and expensive. Due to limitations of streaming content, licensing and copyright issues for use in learning management systems and public performance screenings, and time and budgetary issues surrounding the conversion of analog to digital formats, public and educational institutions are still very reliant on physical formats. Patron …

Embracing Maturity: An Ignatian Christian Leadership Formation Model For Emerging Adults, Todd Dustin Clark Feb 2014

Embracing Maturity: An Ignatian Christian Leadership Formation Model For Emerging Adults, Todd Dustin Clark

Doctor of Ministry

The research of this project is concentrated on the integration of the disciplines of leadership, developmental psychology, and spiritual formation to inform a nine-month Christian leadership formation process for postmodern emerging adults. As the Staff Development Facilitator for an Outdoor Science Camp ministry (OSS), my task is twofold: (1) In regards to our mission, I aspire to help staff members develop leadership skills that prepare them to be excellent experiential educators; (2) in regards to formation, I desire to facilitate relevant spiritual growth for emerging adults. I believe the overlapping and pragmatic connection between these two goals is the art …

Skeleton Found In A Rhode Island Cave, Possibility Of Lyme Disease, Tooba Ghafoor Feb 2014

Skeleton Found In A Rhode Island Cave, Possibility Of Lyme Disease, Tooba Ghafoor

2014 Honors Council of the Illinois Region Papers

A skeleton of a member of the Wampanoag tribe was recently found in a cave near the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Examination of the skeleton revealed the individual was most likely a male in his late 40s. Six Amblyomma americanum and nine Xodes scapalaris ticks were found in the fur cloth of the individual. These ticks, as well as abnormalities of the skeleton, including a missing arm and broken rib, raise the possibility of the individual suffering and dying from Lyme disease. Carbon-14 dated the remains and ticks to the year 1600.

'What Will This Do For My Career?' Teaching Cultural Diversity To Design Students In A For-Profit Institution, Suellen R. Regonini

Southern Anthropologist

For-profit educational institutions are a growing force on the higher education landscape today. In order to improve the rigor of their four-year degrees, general education and other non-career-specific courses are being added to their curricula. The pedagogy at these schools generally privileges four-hour class blocks, the use of visual materials rather than standard texts, and hands-on practical application of skills, all of which can make teaching a traditional lecture-based class in the career school environment quite challenging. This article analyzes efforts by the author to combine personal experience teaching with web videos and visual blogging in courses at both traditional …

In The Best Interest Of The (Adult) Child: Ideas About Kinship Care Of Older Adults, Tezra Jennings, Tam E. Perry, Julia Valeriani Feb 2014

In The Best Interest Of The (Adult) Child: Ideas About Kinship Care Of Older Adults, Tezra Jennings, Tam E. Perry, Julia Valeriani

Social Work Faculty Publications

This article uses a qualitative, ethnographic approach to examine the experiences older adults and their kin, as the older adult engages in relocation. Studies looking at caregiving by kin for older adults highlight burdens for the adult child. This study offers a life course perspective on kinship care, analyzing older adults’ decisions’ to move. It was found that many older adults are strongly influenced by the desire to not be cared for by their kin as well as to select housing near their existing social network, which might exclude kin. In conclusion, policy implications are discussed.

The Faith Web: A Networking Of The Body Of Christ To Mitigate Relationship Voids And Strengthen The Faith Community, Scott M. Ness

Doctor of Ministry

This dissertation introduces a new philosophy, The Faith Web, as a method to validate relationships and provide reciprocal social capital between people for the sake of building Christian community, support, and formation. Section 1 describes the ideals of Christian community and examines the ways these ideals are not realized. Special attention is paid to relationship voids caused by death, divorce, fatherlessness, and absenteeism of parents. Section 2 examines the communal life of ancient Israel and the present day community that occurs in Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) and Social Networking Sites (SNS). This juxtaposition draws upon the strength of both approaches …

Biology Faculty Research

Engaging large numbers of undergraduates in authentic scientific discovery is desirable but difficult to achieve. We have developed a general model in which faculty and teaching assistants from diverse academic institutions are trained to teach a research course for first-year undergraduate students focused on bacteriophage discovery and genomics. The course is situated within a broader scientific context aimed at understanding viral diversity, such that faculty and students are collaborators with established researchers in the field. The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) course has been widely implemented and has been …

Slaying The Syncretistic Chimera: A Study Of The Consensus Repetjtus In Light Of Confessionalization Theory, Timothy Schmeling

Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation

Schmeling, Timothy R. “Slaying the Syncretistic Chimera: A Study of the Consensus Repetitus in Light of Confessionalization Theory.” Ph.D. diss., Concordia Seminary, 2014. 478 pp.

The Syncretistic Controversy (ca. 1645–86) was the most important controversy of seventeenth-century Lutheranism. It was inaugurated by Helmstedt theology professor Georg Calixt (1586–1656), who sought mutual tolerance between Christendom’s confessions on the basis of the fundamental agreement all shared by virtue of their adherence to the Apostles’ Creed and theology of the first five centuries. In response the Electoral Saxon theological faculties promulgated the Consensus Repetitus fidei vere Lutheranae (1655), a confession against syncretism and …

Pop Culture Pedagogy: Television And Film As Simulated Ethnographic Data, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper Feb 2014

Pop Culture Pedagogy: Television And Film As Simulated Ethnographic Data, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper

Southern Anthropologist

Anthropological theory often appears as the capstone course for undergraduate anthropology majors – the final barrier to the degree or perhaps even ‘becoming an anthropologist’. Despite its importance, however, this class is often underappreciated and its full potential left unrealized due to a lack of student engagement. The abstract language of original texts can be intimidating and difficult to apply to the complex realities of daily life. In addition, simply learning about theory does not prepare students to function as critical thinkers, much less future practitioners. This paper profiles a successful compromise: the use of popular television and film as …

Pathways To Sustainability Careers: Building Capacity To Solve Complex Problems, Jennifer H. Allen, Fletcher Beaudoin, Elizabeth Lloyd-Pool, Jacob Sherman

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

Many of the central sustainability challenges facing society today—climate change, social inequality, and resource degradation, to name a few—are socially complex, politically fraught, and imperfectly understood. To be able to effectively engage in addressing such “wicked problems,” individuals need a mixture of content knowledge and soft skills that enable them to critically analyze these challenges from a systems perspective, develop creative solutions, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively with others who may not share common views. Such skill sets and abilities are also more generally valuable in navigating personal, organizational, and societal complexities. Portland State University’s (PSU) Pathways to Sustainability Careers …

Background—Cross-sectional studies show that human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) stigma is negatively correlated with social support.

Purpose—The purpose of this study is to examine the bidirectional relationship between social support and HIV stigma.

Methods—We collected quarterly data from a cohort of 422 people living with HIV in Uganda, followed for a median of 2.1 years. We used multilevel regression to model the contemporaneous and 3-month-lagged associations between social support and both enacted and internalized stigma.

Results—Lagged enacted stigma was negatively correlated with emotional and instrumental social support, and lagged instrumental social support was negatively correlated with enacted stigma. Internalized stigma and …

Stories And/Of Self: Using Digital Storytelling In The Anthropology Classroom, Aaron Thornburg Feb 2014

Stories And/Of Self: Using Digital Storytelling In The Anthropology Classroom, Aaron Thornburg

Southern Anthropologist

Digital storytelling is a computer-based media production process that holds significant pedagogical promise for college- and university-level courses in general and cultural anthropology courses in particular. Although digital storytelling is increasingly being used in third-level educational institutions, the advantages and potential problems of giving such assignments have yet to be fully considered in the scholarly literature. This article uses a case study approach to address the potential problems with and benefits of utilizing digital storytelling projects based on my experiences in teaching a “Media, Self, and Society” course at two universities in the 2010-11 academic year. Particular attention will be …

Audiovisual Media As A Pedagogical Tool: A Brief Annotated Bibliography, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper, Max Stein Feb 2014

Audiovisual Media As A Pedagogical Tool: A Brief Annotated Bibliography, Elizabeth Elliott Cooper, Max Stein

Southern Anthropologist

Media-based, pedagogical innovations are understudied and largely undocumented within anthropology and the social sciences more generally. While most instructors share the experience of showing films or employing YouTube clips as quick, contemporary examples, we rarely reflect critically on these techniques—much less publish our impressions. This bibliography mirrors the still tentative state of the literature and is neither exhaustive nor authoritative but intended instead as a starting point, profiling (1) examples of media-based pedagogy from the 1970s to the present, (2) critical assessments of the efficacy and impact of classroom media, (3) practical references outlining potential source material and relevant copyright …

Learning To Be Lebanese: Socializations Of Citizenship And Subjecthood In Beiruti Primary Schools, Jade Lansing Feb 2014

Learning To Be Lebanese: Socializations Of Citizenship And Subjecthood In Beiruti Primary Schools, Jade Lansing

Theses and Dissertations

This research project will explore the ways the Lebanese state and individual classroom actors construct and contest citizenship through the curriculum and structure of civics classrooms in contemporary Lebanese primary schools. Using civics classrooms as a lens to understand broader trends in educational environments, this study will analyze the role of education in the narration, diffusion, and aggravation of social and political discord. It argues that schools and classrooms are not passive or neutral mirrors of external dynamics, but rather play an active role in the narration and construction of these realities. This research shows that education is a space …
