Dartmouth Scholarship

The emergence of agriculture in West-Central Africa approximately 5,000 years ago, profoundly modified the cultural landscape and mode of subsistence of most sub-Saharan populations. How this major innovation has had an impact on the genetic history of rainforest hunter-gatherers—historically referred to as ‘pygmies’—and agriculturalists, however, remains poorly understood. Here we report genome-wide SNP data from these populations located west-to-east of the equatorial rainforest. We find that hunter-gathering populations present up to 50% of farmer genomic ancestry, and that substantial admixture began only within the last 1,000 years. Furthermore, we show that the historical population sizes characterizing these communities already differed …

The Use Of Geographic Information Systems By Law Enforcement Agencies And Its Impact On Police Performance, Kun Ulvi Feb 2014

The Use Of Geographic Information Systems By Law Enforcement Agencies And Its Impact On Police Performance, Kun Ulvi

Theses and Dissertations

Do we know whether the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in law enforcement agencies increases police performance? This study examines the impact of GIS use to police performance outcomes in cities and counties of the U.S. between 2000 and 2007. Current research uses computerized mapping conceptualization to operationalize its measurement. Second, the police performance methodological context is used to measure the organizational impact of GIS. Finally, a new theoretical framework, information technology capacity that combines organizational, environmental and managerial factors to explain IT applications, is used to encompass most relevant dimensions of the subject matter. Findings indicate that the …

The Paradox Of Freedom: John Dewey On Human Nature, Culture, And Education, Cherilyn Keall Feb 2014

The Paradox Of Freedom: John Dewey On Human Nature, Culture, And Education, Cherilyn Keall

Education and Culture

In this paper, I argue that John Dewey's view of human nature entails that culture is a necessary but not sufficient condition for freedom. A surprising corollary of this argument is that, if left to run its natural course, culture in fact tends not to enable but rather to preclude freedom. Hence, there are specific cultural practices—habits acquired through education—that are required if we are to realize our freedom and thereby also fulfill our nature as human beings.

The Committee For Cultural Freedom And The Roots Of Mccarthyism, Gary B. Bullert Feb 2014

The Committee For Cultural Freedom And The Roots Of Mccarthyism, Gary B. Bullert

Education and Culture

Among the most controversial aspects of John Dewey's career as a public intellectual was his conflict with the Communist Party and its various front groups. John Dewey and Sidney Hook co-founded the Committee for Cultural Freedom that directly exposed that pretense of the Popular Front, which excluded the Soviet Union from the list of totalitarian states. In the process, Dewey became embroiled publicly with Corliss Lamont and privately (to a large degree) with Franz Boas. Besides policy toward the Soviet Union, the New York Teachers' Union's decertification emerged as a central issue. In the process, Dewey exhibited both intellectual integrity …

Culturometrics: A Constructionist Philosophy For Humanistic Inquiry In Qualitative Identity Research, Béatrice Boufoy-Bastick Feb 2014

Culturometrics: A Constructionist Philosophy For Humanistic Inquiry In Qualitative Identity Research, Béatrice Boufoy-Bastick

The Qualitative Report

Culturometrics is a new person-centred research philosophy that has shaped new tools for measuring and revealing the subjectivities of cultural identities. By focusing on tractable processes of identity communication rather than attempting to categorise the infinitely variable forms of identity outcomes it has developed intuitively acceptable computationally simple bridges across the qualitative /quantitative research divide. By reframing social constructs as cultural identities and categorising cultural groups by the fluidity of their membership it has extended the remit of traditional qualitative research. This paper gives a brief overview of the humanistic intentions of Culturometrics that underpin its objective methods for measuring …

From Computer To Commuter: Considerations For The Use Of Social Networking Sites For Participant Recruitment, Lily Hirsch, Kirrilly Thompson, Danielle Every Feb 2014

From Computer To Commuter: Considerations For The Use Of Social Networking Sites For Participant Recruitment, Lily Hirsch, Kirrilly Thompson, Danielle Every

The Qualitative Report

The rise in use and changing nature of the Internet has led to an increase in the number of people using discussion forums and social networking sites for the purpose of online social interaction, sharing experiences, and learning. Whilst researchers have begun to capitalize on the increasing pool of online participants for research online, very few studies have examined the benefits of online participant recruitment for offline data collection. Through the format of a ‘back stage’ essay, this paper follows the research process of participant recruitment using a social networking site to arrange offline interviews with local rail users in …

A Collaborative Approach To Socio-Economic Assessment To Increase Coastal Marsh And Community Resilience On The Chesapeake Bay, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Lisa Wainger, Brian Needelman, Katherine J. Johnson, Mimi Larsen Becker Feb 2014

A Collaborative Approach To Socio-Economic Assessment To Increase Coastal Marsh And Community Resilience On The Chesapeake Bay, Natallia Leuchanka Diessner, Lisa Wainger, Brian Needelman, Katherine J. Johnson, Mimi Larsen Becker

Natural Resources & the Environment

Sea level rise and other stressors in the mid-Atlantic U.S. are impacting the resilience of coastal communities, and increase their overall physical and socio-economic vulnerabilities. The Deal Island Peninsula on the Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay, MD is used as a case study of a coastal heritage community that is undergoing these stressors and is involved in stakeholder-driven resilience and adaptation planning. In this interdisciplinary socio-ecological project funded by the NERRS Science Collaborative, a socio-economic analysis of a culturally rich coastal community is performed as a sub-study. The goals of the socio-economic analysis are to 1) better understand stakeholder …
