Report On The Tullis Ranch Investigation, Margaret Parnell Grindstaff, Dr. Joel Janetski Feb 2014

Report On The Tullis Ranch Investigation, Margaret Parnell Grindstaff, Dr. Joel Janetski

Journal of Undergraduate Research

With the grant provided by the Office of Research and Creative activity, I was able to conduct a survey of the Tullis Ranch. The ranch is located northeast of Spring City, UT and is owned by Marta and Lamond Tullis. After purchasing the land in 1997, Dr. Tullis came upon an unusual circular structure, which appeared to be a dwelling of some kind. This grant provided the money to do two sample excavations in this dwelling. The purpose was to discover whether the structure had been built by early pioneer settlers in the Sanpete County or whether the structure predated …

Chemical Analysis Of Archaeological Soils Of Piedras Negras, Guatemala, J. Jacob Parnell, Dr. Richard E. Terry Feb 2014

Chemical Analysis Of Archaeological Soils Of Piedras Negras, Guatemala, J. Jacob Parnell, Dr. Richard E. Terry

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the 1930’s, O. Arrhenius was contracted by a Swedish sugar beet company to test soil fertility levels for fertilizer applications. While testing a specific area, he realized a peculiar occurrence associated with phosphorus levels and an area of ancient habitation. Since that time, other studies have been completed on the relationship between the chemical signatures left in the soil and their relationship to activities of ancient inhabitants. The procedure of determining phosphate concentrations has been used to help delineate site boundaries, indicate agricultural areas, and interpret activity areas.

Graduating Black Males: A Generic Qualitative Study, Edward E. Bell Feb 2014

Graduating Black Males: A Generic Qualitative Study, Edward E. Bell

The Qualitative Report

Black males face a difficult educational battle. Across America, graduation statistics for Black males are sobering. The purpose of this study was to explore why Black males drop out of school and to examine the current employment status of the study participants. The research took place in rural North Carolina. Fifteen Black American male high school dropouts took part in a snowball sample. This study was qualitative and used open and axial coding. Findings from this study may provide guidance and directions for school and community leaders to help Black males stay in school through graduating.

Power And Property Relations In Rus And Latin Europe: A Comparative Analysis, Yulia Mikhailova Feb 2014

Power And Property Relations In Rus And Latin Europe: A Comparative Analysis, Yulia Mikhailova

History ETDs

This dissertation offers a comparative analysis of forms of social and political organization in eleventh- and twelfth-century Rus, Norman England, and Aquitaine as they are represented in accounts of conflicts, disputes, peace-making, and interpersonal agreements found in Rusian, English, and Aquitanian political narratives. From this analysis, Rus, the Eastern European polity that later gave rise to Russia, Ukraine, and Belorussia, emerges as a regional variation of a European society, in contrast with the predominant view of Rus as being profoundly different from Latin Europe. A comparison of narratives from all the three regions examined in the dissertation shows that they …

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang Feb 2014

Pre-Service Chinese English As A Foreign Language (Efl) Teachers Perceptions About Implementation Of Communicative Language Teaching, Huanan Zhang

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The government of China requires that the Communicative Language Teaching Approach (CLT) should be applied in primary and secondary school English education by issuing the New Curriculum early in 2001 to develop learners competence of using the language; however, implementation of CLT is still a big challenge confronting pre-service Chinese EFL teachers who experienced the traditional teaching approach over an extensive period of time. I conducted a case study research on the perceptions about CLT of twelve pre-service EFL teachers from Liaoning Province, China, to explore: a) what are pre-service Chinese EFL teachers' perceptions about CLT and its implementation in …

A Survey Of Student Use Of Sherrill Library, Marilyn Geller, Library Assessment Workgroup Feb 2014

A Survey Of Student Use Of Sherrill Library, Marilyn Geller, Library Assessment Workgroup

Library Reports

In the summer of 2013, the Sherrill Library Assessment Work Group began work on a project to identify areas where the current physical library facility excels and where it warrants improvement, and to understand how and why students are using physical libraries in general and the Sherrill Library facility specifically. We chose to use an online survey that was distributed to all current EDS students and to all LU students enrolled in at least one class on campus during the fall 2013 semester. The combined population size for both schools totaled 3,675 students. To achieve a margin of error of …

Unsettling Accounts: Life, Debt, And Development In The Middle Rio Grande, Samuel Karrigan Robison Markwell Feb 2014

Unsettling Accounts: Life, Debt, And Development In The Middle Rio Grande, Samuel Karrigan Robison Markwell

American Studies ETDs

This thesis reexamines the history of the formation of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District (MRGCD) during the first half of the twentieth century. Previous histories have either uncritically celebrated the MRGCD, or have been critical of its formation because of the way it negatively affected Mexicano/Hispano farming communities. This thesis extends the critical literature by situating the MRGCD as a formation of settler colonialism and attending to the ways it affected Pueblo Indian Nations. I argue that the MRGCD, ostensibly designed to "protect life and property" in the valley, was actually concerned with securing forms of life and property …

(Re)Making Mestizaje: The Role Of Race And Gender Norms In Latina College Students Discourse, Sarah Leah Santillanes Feb 2014

(Re)Making Mestizaje: The Role Of Race And Gender Norms In Latina College Students Discourse, Sarah Leah Santillanes

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This ideological critique project focused on the race and gender discourse of 20 self-identified Latina community college students between the ages of 18-30. Participants were purposively sampled and recruited from a large community college within the state of New Mexico. Over a period of eight months, two or more semi-structured interviews were conducted with each research participant. These interviews highlighted the participants race and gender experiences and their perceived expectations about these norms inside and outside of school. A critical hermeneutic methodological framework was employed in the interpretation of the participants' interviews. Discourse transcriptions were coded first for general themes …

Harold Camping And May 21, 2011: Rationalizations, Leader Responses, And Gender Differences Following A Failed Prophecy, Christin L. Moreland Feb 2014

Harold Camping And May 21, 2011: Rationalizations, Leader Responses, And Gender Differences Following A Failed Prophecy, Christin L. Moreland

Sociology ETDs

Previous studies regarding failed prophecies have focused on believers responses following a failed prophecy, along with how believers rationalize and convince others of the prediction's fulfillment. The literature does not address the reaction of leaders following a failed prophecy or indicate a gendered experience within prophetic groups. This case study looks at the May 21st, 2011 rapture prediction, and subsequent failure, of Harold Camping. My research investigates new rationalizations utilized by followers and leaders of a prophetic ministry, observes the reaction of a leader towards critics, and recognizes a gendered dynamic at play within apocalyptic communities. Upon transcribing podcasts from …

Genetics And History Surrounding Chachapoyas, Peru, Joel E. Myres Feb 2014

Genetics And History Surrounding Chachapoyas, Peru, Joel E. Myres

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Anthropologists studying human diversity and distribution have long recognized that humans are the recipients of two major informational systems; one cultural and the other biological. Both these components of human diversity are inherited by organisms, be they individuals or populations, across spatial and temporal realms, and retain the ability to influence the behavior or continuance of the organism in terms of fitness. Similarly, the biological record can reflect cultural processes or transitions, such as migrations or disease, much as ethnographic studies can identify elements of cultural adoption, such as ideas or practices. In as much as these elements of culture …

The Maya Sculptor: An Epigraphic And Iconographic Study, Holly Sullivan Feb 2014

The Maya Sculptor: An Epigraphic And Iconographic Study, Holly Sullivan

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The existence of artistic authorship within ancient writing systems, though rare, is a significant diagnostic tool. Such signatures can illuminate social positions of artists and networks of artistic production. They also represent a unique genre of text outside of formal written language which can reveal aspects of the language never considered before. Recently, Mayan epigraphers have begun to ask if such a program of authorship existed among the Classic Maya. For my research project I undertook the collection and decipherment of 95 proposed signatures or “name-tags” on stelae and carved monuments from 23 sites in the Central Maya region of …

Images Of Self: Constancy Amidst Social Change In India, Erika Gilroy Feb 2014

Images Of Self: Constancy Amidst Social Change In India, Erika Gilroy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Social changes currently taking place in India are primarily a result of the Indian government’s efforts to promote technological industries, introduce family planning programs, and provide greater educational opportunities to a larger number of its people. The major effects of these reforms are the movement of an increasing number of Indians from villages to cities in order to find employment, the shift from a dominantly agricultural society to one of urban industry, and the increasing number of Indians who seek, and for the first time are given, the opportunity for an education. While such reforms may be changing many of …
