The Beginnings Of Modern Historical Archaeology In The Northeast And The Origins Of The Conference On Northeast Historical Archaeology, Paul R. Huey
Northeast Historical Archaeology
Historical archaeology entered a remarkable period of growth and development following World War II and continuing through the 1950s and the first half of the 1960s. In addition to the pressing need for salvage archaeology at threatened sites, excavation occurred at many other sites for research purposes including reconstruction of historic buildings. New techniques of underwater exploration increased accessibility of shipwreck sites in the 1950s, and attention also focused increasingly on the problem of developing artifact typologies. Early in the 1960s statistical analysis and comparative study of archaeological data set a new direction, while an increasing number of excavations also …

In the 19th century, ‘scientific archaeologists’ split from their antiquarian colleagues over the role that provenience (context) plays in the value of an artifact. These archaeologists focus on documenting an artifact’s context when they remove it from its original location. Archaeologists then use this contextual information to place these artifacts within a particular larger assemblage, in a particular time and space. Once analyzed, the artifacts found in a site or region can be used to document, to understand, and explain the past. Given the central place of context for archaeological excavation, archaeologists have done everything in their power to combat …

The most threatened mammal group on Earth, Madagascar’s five endemic lemur families (lemurs are found nowhere else), represent more than 20% of the world’s primate species and 30% of family-level diversity. This combination of diversity and uniqueness is unmatched by any other country—remarkable considering that Madagascar is only 1.3 to 2.9% the size of the Neotropics, Africa, or Asia, the other three landmasses where nonhuman primates occur. But lemurs face extinction risks driven by human disturbance of forest habitats. We discuss these challenges and reasons for hope in light of site-specific, local actions proposed in an emergency conservation action plan.

Stealing Women, Stealing Men: Co-Creating Cultures Of Polygamy In A Pesantren Community In Eastern Indonesia, Bianca J. Smith
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article explores how the practice of polygamy is maintained in a Sasak pesantren (a traditional Islamic boarding school for the study of the Qur’an, Hadith and classical texts) in Lombok, eastern Indonesia. Pesantren are patriarchal institutions that are managed by male Muslim teachers and preachers known in Lombok as tuan guru. I demonstrate how tuan guru play critical roles in the reproduction of polygamy in Sasak society by implicating women in the co-creation of polygamous marriage and simultaneously teaching strategies for resisting it. By situating Muslim women’s experiences in wider Indonesian and local Sasak discursive contexts, and based …

Organizing Disability: Producing Knowledge In A University Accommodations Office, Shelby Forbes
Organizing Disability: Producing Knowledge In A University Accommodations Office, Shelby Forbes
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
As it is generally conceived, knowledge belongs to the individual: we imagine how a lightbulb suddenly illuminates above the scientist's head, a muse whispers in the philosopher's ear, cogs slide into place as wheels turn in the thinker's mind, and, "Eureka!" an idea is born. As an individualistic experience, knowledge is secure in the repository of the mind, a "steel trap" as it is so often referred, which can only be breached by the most sophisticated and precise methods. From these popular representations of knowledge, one can extrapolate further to conclude that knowledge is not made, it is received. All …

A Testimony In Art And Artifacts: The Paul Chesman Exhibit, Nathan Whetten, Dr. Marti Allen, Dr. Alan Parrish
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The subject of my project was former BYU professor Dr. Paul Cheesman and his collection of Pre-Columbian artifacts. During Dr. Cheesman’s collecting years there was significant numbers of collectors, with many different goals. Many collections were made for museums, or by archaeologists, or by people just seeking interesting objects. My goal was to examine Dr. Cheesman’s purpose in collecting and to mount an exhibition of his artifacts in the JSB.
Policy Making In Welfare Reform, Misty May Wright, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Policy Making In Welfare Reform, Misty May Wright, Dr. Donald Forsyth
Journal of Undergraduate Research
This paper is to report the results of my study on policy-making in welfare reform. While interning at a special interest group for disability issues in Washington D. C., I conducted ethnographic research through ethnographic interviewing and participant observation. It was my intent to profile the culture of policy-makers, specifically in welfare reform, as part of a more extensive study to compare their culture to those affected by policy. I found that the primary markers of the policy-making culture are information exchange and meetings.

The Pontificate Of John Paul Ii: A Pastoral Model For Effective Leadership, Justin M. Udomah
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
Throughout the course of human history, there have been individuals whose lives have transformatively impacted entire generations In the Catholic Church. One such person was Pope John Paul II. This paper attempts to designate him as an effective leader by analyzing his personal life, pastoral engagements, and relationships with others through the lens of value-based, authentic, and positive leadership. The resources for this analysis were based on documents and archival materials. Upon analyzing the data, it was concluded that John Paul II’s pontificate was an era of effective leadership. From this conclusion, the implications for contemporary leaders at different levels …
