Ancient human remains of paleopathological interest typically contain highly degraded DNA in which pathogenic taxa are often minority components, making sequence-based metagenomic characterization costly. Microarrays may hold a potential solution to these challenges, offering a rapid, affordable and highly informative snapshot of microbial diversity in complex samples without the lengthy analysis and/or high cost associated with high-throughput sequencing. Their versatility is well established for modern clinical specimens, but they have yet to be applied to ancient remains. Here we report bacterial profiles of archaeological and historical human remains using the Lawrence Livermore Microbial Detection Array (LLMDA). The array successfully identified …

Student Identity Considerations And Implications Associated With Socioscientific Issues Instruction, Mitchel James Ruzek Mar 2014

Student Identity Considerations And Implications Associated With Socioscientific Issues Instruction, Mitchel James Ruzek

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to explore how aspects of identity, perceived levels of controversy, and the strength of a student's attachment to their controversial identity relate to conceptual understanding and knowledge acquisition during socioscientific issues (SSI) based instruction in a biology classroom. The knowledge gained from this study will have the capacity to enhance our understanding of the role that attachment to identity plays during SSI negotiation. Additionally, insight was gained into the role played by aspects of identity in conceptual understanding of scientifically controversial topics during SSI based instruction.

This study contributed to the existing knowledge base …

Did Pre-Clovis People Inhabit The Paisley Caves (And Why Does It Matter)?, Stuart J. Fiedel

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

The date and processes of initial human colonization of the Americas are crucial issues for the understanding of human biological and cultural development. For example, Soares et al. (2009) cited the American archaeological record to validate their proposed revision of the human mitochondrial molecular clock. Their suggested mutation rate puts the date of rapid expansion of Native American clades at around 13,500–15,000 cal BP. Similarly, Poznik et al. (2013) have used the “high-confidence archaeological dating” of the initial peopling of the Americas to calibrate the rates of both Y-chromosome and mtDNA mutation and thereby to reconcile the ages of the …

Toward A New Normal: Trauma, Diversity, And The New Orleans Urban Long-Term Research Area Exploratory (Ultra-Ex) Project, Kevin F. Gotham, Mike Blum, Richard Campanella Mar 2014

Toward A New Normal: Trauma, Diversity, And The New Orleans Urban Long-Term Research Area Exploratory (Ultra-Ex) Project, Kevin F. Gotham, Mike Blum, Richard Campanella

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Though it is widely held that social-ecological diversity is critical for resilience and the recovery of post-trauma urban systems, there is disagreement over issues of causes and impacts. In this paper, we present analysis and findings of the impact of trauma on patterns of social-ecological diversity in New Orleans in the years following the Hurricane Katrina disaster (August-September 2005). We first provide an overview of conceptualizations of trauma and urban ecosystem resilience, and discuss programmatic research questions and objectives. We then examine city-wide land use / land cover change, showing that flood trauma reduced landscape-level ecological diversity across New Orleans. …

Sharing The Light Of The Sacred Fire: A Proposal For A Paradigm Shift In Psychology, Art W. Blume Ph.D. Mar 2014

Sharing The Light Of The Sacred Fire: A Proposal For A Paradigm Shift In Psychology, Art W. Blume Ph.D.

Journal of Indigenous Research

Abstract

Psychology as a science and practice developed with a Eurocentric model that has basic assumptions about humanity and our place in the world. The model places great value on individualism and individual achievement, autonomy and personal liberties, self-achievement and personal rewards.

However, the Eurocentric paradigm of individualism and autonomy in many ways is not effective to respond to global concerns that were not anticipated when psychology first developed. Local problems have become global concerns in which traditional Eurocentric assumptions about boundaries and self-interests no longer hold. Many of the issues that challenge psychological health today are too large, broad, …
