Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani Dec 2014

Representations Of Gender In Young Adult (Ya) Literature, 1960-2010, Maria I. Cipriani

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation focuses the lens of queer studies and trauma studies on YA literature published in the United States between 1960 and 2010 to demonstrate that authors embed cultural messages in YA texts. Those messages for YA readers intend to model behavior considered appropriate and teach about normative sex and gender roles. Individuals between the ages of 10 and 20 comprise YA readership, and the means of teaching these readers cultural norms include imagery and cautionary tales. The content of the literature inculcates views of acceptable behaviors with respect to sexuality and gender roles and generally conflates sex and gender. …

Re-Facing Societies Through Art Faith47: A Heroine For Hope, Stephen Louis Francis Dec 2014

Re-Facing Societies Through Art Faith47: A Heroine For Hope, Stephen Louis Francis

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Areas of the world that are facing hardships of all kinds bare the same signature that is visible to all: a dilapidated infrastructure. A first step in improving the areas that are struggling is to give the citizens something to be proud of when they look out of their windows. The work of South African street artist Faith47 is the kind of art that can provide such pride and also hope for a better future. Using Faith47's native country, I am proposing a socialist regime of art to both physically and emotionally improve the areas and citizens who suffer each …

The Ritualistic And Theatrical Elements Of Ashura, Nooran Abdulkareem Fattah Al-Salihi Dec 2014

The Ritualistic And Theatrical Elements Of Ashura, Nooran Abdulkareem Fattah Al-Salihi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Ashura (also spelled Ashoura) takes place on the tenth day of Muharram when Shia Muslims commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husayn that took place in 61 AH/ 680 AD. It is a socio-religious phenomenon that combines ritualistic and theatrical behavior. My objective is to shed light on the interaction between ritual and theatrical behavior and how these work together to form the overall event. The first section introduces the historical background of Ashura, the second section explores the ritualistic and theatrical characteristics of Ashura, and the last, concluding section talks about the relation between the two aspects and how they …

Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino Dec 2014

Art And Cognition: A Methodological Critique Of The Pre-Atonal Arnold Schoenberg, Antonio Pellegrino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

What I will attempt in this essay is to bring the critique to Schoenberg's artistic legacy first on the grounds of the philosophical debate that was going on in those years in the German-speaking world, more specifically between Idealism and Materialism. The second step will be that of bringing the understanding of Schoenberg methods on a cognitive level; and in doing so, I will establish theoretical ties between those philosophical systems and cognitive systems; namely the Cognitivist and the Connectionist approaches. The third step will be that of mirroring the association between the philosophical plane and the cognitive one in …

Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti Dec 2014

Low Intensity Vibrations Mitigate Cancer-Induced Bone Loss With Indications Of Reduced Tumor Progression, Gabriel M. Pagnotti

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Osteopenia is a comorbidity frequently observed in patients being treated for and recovering from cancer treatment, elevating their risk of fracture. These skeletal losses are compounded by chemotherapy and irradiation, damaging both bone and contents of the marrow, thereby undermining recovery efforts. Exercise is commonly prescribed as a non-pharmacological means of maintaining bone mass. However, in those with compromised bone strength, the loads imposed by rigorous exercises may facilitate a fracture it was intended to prevent. Low intensity vibrations (LIV), a mechanical signal demonstrated as anabolic to bone by biasing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) towards an osteogenic endpoint, may represent …

Molecular Characterization Of Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx), A Thraustochytird Pathogen Of The Hard Clam, Mercenaria Mercenaria, Ewelina Rubin Dec 2014

Molecular Characterization Of Quahog Parasite Unknown (Qpx), A Thraustochytird Pathogen Of The Hard Clam, Mercenaria Mercenaria, Ewelina Rubin

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The hard clam or northern quahog, Mercenaria mercenaria, is one of the most valuable seafood products in the United States. Severe episodes of hard clam mortality have been consistently associated with infections caused by a thraustochytrid parasite called Quahog Parasite Unknown (QPX). Studies in the present dissertation examined the molecular bases of QPX virulence towards clams. Investigation of QPX transcriptome libraries generated a database of QPX putative virulence factors and other molecules potentially involved in interactions with the clam host. Multiple differential gene expression profiles were generated using oligoarray technology for QPX strains isolated from different geographic locations and for …

Gender, Number, Nouns & Adjectives: A Study Of Grammatical Agreement In Second Language Learners Of Arabic & Spanish, Anne-Marie Marguerite Poulos

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis investigates the causes of gender and number agreement errors in learners of both Arabic and Spanish as second languages. Data was collected from each of these groups during beginner level language courses at a university. There were a total of eight tests. The first six were adjective selection activities focusing on a specific noun phrase or sentence structure. The last two were written tests, elicited by images, where students had to produce their own nouns and adjectives. The common first language (L1) of the majority of participants is English, which lacks adjective agreement and does not have the …

Neural Correlates And Peripheral Mirnas Associated With Stress-Related Telomere Shortening, Stephanie Izzi Dec 2014

Neural Correlates And Peripheral Mirnas Associated With Stress-Related Telomere Shortening, Stephanie Izzi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Telomeres are repetitive nucleoprotein complexes at the ends of chromosomes that provide a protective cap for genomic DNA. Telomere shortening leads to cellular senescence or apoptosis. Accordingly, telomere length is considered both a mechanism and marker for aging. Increased exposure to chronic stress is associated with shorter telomere length. In addition, differences in stress reactivity have been associated with telomere length. Here I will describe several studies identifying neural circuits associated with such telomere shortening, an evaluation of saliva as an appropriate biomaterial to measure telomere length, and an exploration of the role of microRNAs as mediators of stress-related telomere …

Inhibition Of Pathological Connexin26 Hemichannels Implicated In Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome, Noah Alexander Levit Dec 2014

Inhibition Of Pathological Connexin26 Hemichannels Implicated In Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome, Noah Alexander Levit

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Connexin (Cx) proteins form intercellular gap junction channels to facilitate the exchange of ions and second messengers between adjacent cells. Mutations in connexins cause several human diseases by interrupting cell-to-cell communication and coupling. Connexins also form functional hemichannels in nonjunctional membranes that have an unclear role in normal physiology but have altered activity in pathological states. Mutations in GJB2, the gene encoding connexin26 (Cx26), are linked to sensorineural hearing loss as well as syndromic deafness associated with skin disorders. In contrast to Cx26 mutations causing nonsyndromic deafness, those that also cause skin disease are exclusively gain-of-function single amino acid changes …

Damage And Alteration Of Mangroves Inhabited By A Marine Wood-Borer, Timothy Mathias Davidson, Catherine E. De Rivera, Hwey-Lian Hsieh Dec 2014

Damage And Alteration Of Mangroves Inhabited By A Marine Wood-Borer, Timothy Mathias Davidson, Catherine E. De Rivera, Hwey-Lian Hsieh

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Animals can exert a strong influence on the structure and function of foundation species such as mangroves. Because mangroves live at the interface of land and sea, both terrestrial and marine species affect them, including numerous herbivores and boring species. These organisms can affect the fecundity, performance, and morphology of mangroves. In a mangrove stand in southwestern Taiwan, we discovered that mangroves were extensively damaged by woodboring isopods Sphaeroma terebrans. We examined the relationships between burrowing damage from S. terebrans and metrics of mangrove fecundity, performance, and morphology. Individuals of Rhizophora stylosa that were more burrowed by isopods had significantly …

Proper Handling And Transportation Of Eggs For Sale At Kentucky Farmers’ Markets, Anthony J. Pescatore, Jacquie Jacob Dec 2014

Proper Handling And Transportation Of Eggs For Sale At Kentucky Farmers’ Markets, Anthony J. Pescatore, Jacquie Jacob

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Regardless of the number of eggs produced, and whether the eggs are for home use or sale, careful egg handling is very important. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) lists eggs as a potentially hazardous food, therefore careful handling is important. In Kentucky, if you sell more than 60 dozen eggs a week you need to purchase a retail license. The same holds true if you want to sell your eggs to a retail store to be re-sold or to a distributor that will sell them for you. If you produce fewer than 60 dozen eggs a week …

Sheep Breeding: Heritability, Ebvs, Epds And The Nsip, Debra K. Aaron Dec 2014

Sheep Breeding: Heritability, Ebvs, Epds And The Nsip, Debra K. Aaron

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Genetic improvement in a flock depends on the producer’s ability to select breeding sheep that are genetically superior for traits of economic importance. This is complicated by the fact that an animal’s own performance is not always a true indicator of its genetic potential as a parent.

Modeling Colony Collapse Disorder In Honeybees As A Contagion, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell Dec 2014

Modeling Colony Collapse Disorder In Honeybees As A Contagion, Christopher Kribs, Christopher Mitchell

Mathematics Faculty Publications - Archive

Honeybee pollination accounts annually for over $14 billion in United States agriculture alone. Within the past decade there has been a mysterious mass die-off of honeybees, an estimated 10 million beehives and sometimes as much as 90% of an apiary. There is still no consensus on what causes this phenomenon, called Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD. Several mathematical models have studied CCD by only focusing on infection dynamics. We created a model to account for both healthy hive dynamics and hive extinction due to CCD, modeling CCD via a transmissible infection brought to the hive by foragers. The system of …

Inbreeding In Sheep, Debra K. Aaron Dec 2014

Inbreeding In Sheep, Debra K. Aaron

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Inbreeding is broadly defined as the mating of individuals that are related. Strictly speaking, however, all animals within a breed are related. So, in a sense, every purebred sheep producer practices some degree of inbreeding. In most cases this relationship is very slight. Therefore, inbreeding is more practically defined as the mating of individuals more closely related than the average of the breed. This practice includes mating brother to sister, sire to daughter and son to dam.

A New Transit Safety Narrative, Todd Litman Dec 2014

A New Transit Safety Narrative, Todd Litman

Journal of Public Transportation

Public transportation is, overall, a relatively safe (low crash risk) and secure (low crime risk) transport mode. Transit travel has about one-tenth the traffic casualty (injury or death) rate as automobile travel, and residents of transit-oriented communities have about onefifth the per capita crash casualty rate as in automobile-oriented communities. Transit also tends to have lower overall crime rates than automobile travel, and transit improvements can help reduce overall crime risk by improving surveillance and economic opportunities for at-risk populations. Despite its relative safety and security, many people consider transit travel dangerous and are reluctant to use it or support …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Background: Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions cause disease and accumulate during aging, yet our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying their formation remains rudimentary. Guanine-quadruplex (GQ) DNA structures are associated with nuclear DNA instability in cancer; recent evidence indicates they can also form in mitochondrial nucleic acids, suggesting that these non-B DNA structures could be associated with mtDNA deletions. Currently, the multiple types of GQ sequences and their association with human mtDNA stability are unknown. Results: Here, we show an association between human mtDNA deletion breakpoint locations (sites where DNA ends rejoin after deletion of a section) and sequences with G-quadruplex …

Characterization And Role Of Msaabcr In Biofilm Development And Virulence In Staphylococcus Aureus, Gyan Sundar Sahukhal Dec 2014

Characterization And Role Of Msaabcr In Biofilm Development And Virulence In Staphylococcus Aureus, Gyan Sundar Sahukhal

Dissertations

Community-acquired, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus strains often cause localized infections in immune-compromised hosts, but some strains show enhanced virulence leading to severe infections even among healthy individuals with no predisposing risk factors. The genetic basis for this enhanced virulence has yet to be determined. S. aureus possesses a wide variety of virulence factors, the expression of which is carefully coordinated by a variety of regulators. Several virulence regulators have been well characterized, but others have yet to be thoroughly investigated. Previously, the msa gene as a regulator of several virulence genes, biofilm development, and antibiotic …

Integration Of Multimedia In The Teaching And Learning Of Physics: How Can It Influence Student Classroom Engagement?, Cockgen Omondi Limonya

Master of Education

Considered as a multidimensional construct, student engagement has been the focus of educational research for over a decade. Educational researchers have been interested in student classroom engagement because it is opined as one of the ways through which student academic achievement, which has been cited as poor in physics, can be improved. Unfortunately, physics teachers in Kenya have not been able to engage their learners leading to the poor performance in physics. Studies have shown that multimedia integration in teaching and learning enhances student classroom engagement. The current study therefore aimed to examine the relationship between multimedia integration in the …

Variable Education Exposure And Cognitive Task Performance Among The Tsimane, Forager-Horticulturalists, Helen Elizabeth Davis

Anthropology ETDs

At present, we know very little about the transition from traditional learning skills to models of standardized learning, and how it can influence the way one understands and solves problems. This research will examine cognitive performance and the factors affecting variation across communities and between individuals as it changes with age. The objective of this dissertation is to measure cognitive performance among children between 8 and 18 years of age exposed to variable levels of formal schooling in order to investigate three main research questions: (1) Whether exposure to schooling and increased performance in school-based abilities, such as math and …

Women's Health And Abortion Culture In China: Policy, Perception And Practice , Naomi Bouchard

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since China’s implementation of the Family Planning Policy in 1973, much research has been dedicated to analyzing the effects of a policy that strictly controls the reproductive lives of a population now comprisedof 1.35 billion people. Analyses focus on the rise of abortions in China, now at an annual rate of at least 13 million, but offer little insight into the perceptions of the population in regard to China’s new abortion culture. This study aims to shed light on current perceptions through a range of in-person, qualitative interviews conducted in Kunming, China. The study is limited to a sample size …
