Latino Rhythms In Downtown Los Angeles: A Case Study Of The Social, Physical, And Economic Environment Of "La Broadway", Ulises Antonio Gonzalez
Master's Theses
In an attempt to practice inclusive planning, this research project explores whether Broadway Avenue functions as an ethnic commercial strip and identifies social, physical, and economic components that contribute to the Latino neighborhood/ barrio. Using pilot studies Loukaitou-Sideris (2000), Loukaitou-Sideris (2002), Rojas (1993), Manzumdar et al. (2000), Main (2007), and Fernando (2007) as a foundation, this research uses a single case study in addition to several research methods: 42 random surveys, literature review and analysis, site observations/pictures, and land use survey.
Various scholars write that barrios have unique physical, social, economic, and political attributes. A new aesthetic, art, symbols, …

INTRODUCTION
Moyamoya disease is a rare progressive cerebrovascular disease characterized by bilateral stenosis of vasculature of the Circle of Willis, specifically the distal internal carotid arteries, that leads to extensive collateral circulation. These dilated collateral vessels are described as having a hazy “puff of smoke” appearance on angiography. “Moyamoya” is the Japanese word for this characteristic appearance. The disease was originally described in Japan in 1957 1 and introduced to the English literature in 1969.2 The disease is most known for its distribution in Asian populations, but recently there has been more research and attention given to moyamoya in Europe …

Reverse Anti-Semitism In The Fiction Of Bellow And Roth, Jay L. Halio
Reverse Anti-Semitism In The Fiction Of Bellow And Roth, Jay L. Halio
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Reverse Anti-Semitism in the Fiction of Bellow and Roth" Jay L. Halio discusses anti-Semitism in Philip Roth's fiction that what might be called reverse anti-Semitism: the active reaction by Jews who are subjected to anti-Semitism. This aspect of Roth's work is not often discussed: it is not the same as philo-Semitism, which takes a different form entirely. Since Roth was an admirer of Saul Bellow, Halio begins by considering reverse anti-Semitism in Bellow's early novel The Victim. In the novel the protagonist, Asa Leventhal, is accused by a character named Allbee of costing him his job …

Analysis Of Nucleosome Mobility, Fragility, And Recovery: From Embryonic Stem Cells To Invitrosomes, Ashley Nicolle Wright
Analysis Of Nucleosome Mobility, Fragility, And Recovery: From Embryonic Stem Cells To Invitrosomes, Ashley Nicolle Wright
Theses and Dissertations
Several factors direct the placement of specific nucleosomes, which in turn have the ability to regulate DNA accessibility. These factors include, but are not limited to, nucleotide sequence preference, nucleotide modifications, the type of histones present within the nucleosome, and the presence of additional transcription factor or chromatin remodelers. A combination of these and other factors are responsible for tightly controlled efficient transcription within the eukaryotic cell. In order to contribute to the understanding of these complicated processes, three separate hypothesis-driven investigations were carried out. First, we looked into nucleosome positioning and phasing within closely related cells lines. Second, we …
Windsor Beyond Marriage: Due Process, Equality & Undocumented Immigration, Anthony O'Rourke
Windsor Beyond Marriage: Due Process, Equality & Undocumented Immigration, Anthony O'Rourke
William & Mary Law Review
The Supreme Court’s recent decision in United States v. Windsor, invalidating part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act, presents a significant interpretive challenge. Early commentators have criticized the majority opinion’s lack of analytical rigor, and expressed doubt that Windsor can serve as a meaningful precedent with respect to constitutional questions outside the area of same-sex marriage. This Article offers a more rehabilitative reading of Windsor and shows how the decision can be used to analyze a significant constitutional question concerning the use of state criminal procedure to regulate immigration.
From Windsor’s holding, the Article distills two concrete doctrinal propositions …
Analysis Of The Bank Assessment For Non-Point Source Consequences Of Sediment (Bancs) Approach For The Prediction Of Streambank Stability And Erosion Along Stony Clove Creek In The Catskills, Michael Coryat
Theses - ALL
New York City's Ashokan Reservoir provides much of the drinking water for the New York metropolitan area. Storm events occasionally increase reservoir suspended sediment to levels that exceed the regulatory limit. As a result, reservoir discharge must be treated with aluminum sulfate. Streambanks within the Stony Clove Creek subbasin were thought to be a significant source of suspended sediment during these storm events. Twenty-seven bank erosion monitoring sites (BEMS) were established on the Stony Clove Creek by the Green County Soil and Water Conservation District (GCSWCD) in 2001. Stream cross-sections were surveyed and the Bank Assessment for Non-point source Consequences …
Geochemical Effect And Fate Of Gold Nanoparticles (Aunps) In Saturated Soil Matrices, Theodore D. Williams
Geochemical Effect And Fate Of Gold Nanoparticles (Aunps) In Saturated Soil Matrices, Theodore D. Williams
Theses - ALL
Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are extensively used in a number of applications including molecular detection through surface-enhanced Raman scattering, multifunctional nanocarriers for drug delivery, cancer diagnosis and treatment, catalysis and photonic/plasmonic devices. However, environmental fate and toxicity of AuNPs are not well understood or characterized. In this work, AuNPs of different concentrations were introduced and allowed to filter through various soil matrices in an effort to determine the physico-chemical interactions between the AuNPs and the aqueous porous soil medium. AuNPs deposition onto the soil particles and the mechanisms of their transport and release into the soil matrix are key factors that …

Cooperative Construction in Schools in California
John M. Donley
The construction industry has lost efficiency since 1964, while becoming increasingly more litigious. Schools in California can ill afford the time to allow the construction industry time to fully evolve. It may take years or decades to fully improve the efficiency of, and reduce the conflict within the construction industry.
At the same time, the construction industry has developed new processes to improve efficiency and reduce conflict. These processes are beginning to be broadly embraced by the industry. They all contain cooperative elements. Taken together they represent a new organizing principle …

The Impacts Of Triclosan On Anaerobic Community Structures, Function, And Antimicrobial Resistance, Patrick J. Mcnamara, Timothy M. Lapara, Paige J. Novak
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Triclosan is a widespread antimicrobial agent that accumulates in anaerobic digesters used to treat the residual solids generated at municipal wastewater treatment plants; there is very little information, however, about how triclosan impacts microbial communities in anaerobic digesters. We investigated how triclosan impacts the community structure, function and antimicrobial resistance genes in lab-scale anaerobic digesters. Previously exposed (to triclosan) communities were amended with 5, 50, and 500 mg/kg of triclosan, corresponding to the median, 95th percentile, and 4-fold higher than maximum triclosan concentration that has been detected in U.S. biosolids. Triclosan amendment caused all of the Bacteria and Archaea communities …

Predictive Modeling In The Search For Vertebrate Fossils: Geographic Object Based Image Analysis (Geobia) In The Eocene Of Wyoming, Bryan Bommersbach
Masters Theses
The development and testing of predictive models for identifying productive fossil localities represents a promising interdisciplinary endeavor among geographic information scientists, paleoanthropologists, and vertebrate paleontologists. This thesis analyzed high resolution (2m spatial resolution) commercial satellite imagery from the Worldview-2 satellite of five areas of the Great Divide Basin using a GEographic Object-Based Image Analysis (GEOBIA) technique, which segments the image into spectrally homogeneous, multi-pixel image objects. In addition to allowing statistical analysis of the spectral characteristics of the image objects, GEOBIA techniques also let analysts incorporate expert knowledge and contextual information to improve classification accuracy. The spectral characteristics of the …

Of Tribes, Wars, And Jungles: A Study Of U.S.College Students’ Perceptions Of Africa And Africans, Seseer P. Mou
Masters Theses
This study examined American college students’ perceptions of Africans. Knowledge Gap and Systems Theory were applied to creating and discussing the research questions. Systems Theory addresses processes and levels of information transfer (Westley & Maclean, 1965). It requires an understanding of the sources, channels, messages, and the people who receive information in a communication encounter. Knowledge Gap Theory, on the other hand, states that when information circulates in a system, gaps in knowledge are formed and these gaps increase as more information enters the system (Tichenor, Donohue, & Olien, 1970). The results showed that consumption of radio and newspaper news, …
Tradition Versus Power: When Indigenous Customs And State Laws Conflict, Lindsay Short
Tradition Versus Power: When Indigenous Customs And State Laws Conflict, Lindsay Short
Chicago Journal of International Law
Indigenous societies have received increasing attention in recent years. Notably, scholars and the international law community have gradually, but increasingly, recognized indigenous groups' autonomy in past decades. Against this backdrop, indigenous groups have largely continued to maintain their own distinct customs and practices, including their own legal systems. These groups, though, are also necessarily members of states with their own official legal systems. And while the systems often coexist without issue, there are numerous instances of indigenous legal systems directly conflicting with their official state counterparts'. This Comment addresses these discrepancies. After noting the history of indigenous treatment in international …

Where Are All The Services?: An Administrators Perspective On Homeless Services In Western Riverside County, Sarah Crane
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The focus of this study was to better understand the state of homeless services in Western Riverside County’s unincorporated areas and cities. Though various services are available to the homeless in these areas, the distance between the appropriate services and some residential parts of the county can be vast. This study sought to obtain an understanding from the administrators of homeless services providers on the deficiencies in services across the county, striving to understand where and what type of increased services are needed.
This study used a qualitative research design. Data were collected from nine homeless service administrators from around …
The Lemon Tree: My Tree Of Life, Meghan E. Mccarthy
The Lemon Tree: My Tree Of Life, Meghan E. Mccarthy
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The Lemon Tree is a collection of poems that arose from my attempt to capture memories of influential experiences in growing up. The poems are written in prose blocks and move in and out of childlike and adult sensibilities, creating the disillusion of time and memory. The poems themselves are comments on the unreliability and limited scope of memory and compare remembrance to dreams. This suggests that time moves more fluidly than the waking world accepts. Through looking back, through prisms, the speaker remembers experiences that impacted her development as we follow her on a journey to coming-of-age. The Lemon …
On The Evolution Of Virulence, Thi Nguyen
On The Evolution Of Virulence, Thi Nguyen
Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to study the dynamics behind the evolution of virulence. We examine first the underlying mechanics of linear systems of ordinary differential equations by investigating the classification of fixed points in these systems, then applying these techniques to nonlinear systems. We then seek to establish the validity of a system that models the population dynamics of uninfected and infected hosts---first with one parasite strain, then n strains. We define the basic reproductive ratio of a parasite, and study its relationship to the evolution of virulence. Lastly, we investigate the mathematics behind superinfection.
Photosynthetic Thermal Tolerance And Recovery To Short Duration Temperature Stress In Desert And Montane Plants: A Comparative Study, David William Gallagher
Photosynthetic Thermal Tolerance And Recovery To Short Duration Temperature Stress In Desert And Montane Plants: A Comparative Study, David William Gallagher
Master's Theses
- Climate change models predict an increase in frequency and amplitude of extreme weather events, including heat waves. To better predict how the composition and distribution of plant assemblages might respond to these changes in temperature, it is important to understand how species currently respond to these extremes. Photosynthetic thermal tolerance (T25)and photosynthetic recovery (RT25) were quantified in 27 species. We also studied the relationships between T25, RT25 and leaf mass per area (LMA). Leaf temperature was also monitored in the field.
- Leaves used in this study were collected from two distinct …

Water For Santa Cruz County: Nonprofit Advocacy And Public Policy, Matthew Alexander Orbach
Master's Theses
This professional Masters project involved turning the Sustainable Water Coalition (SWC), an unincorporated group of Santa Cruz residents advocating the work of the two local water agencies, into a California Nonprofit Corporation and an IRS recognized 501(c)(4) social welfare organization. This paper examines the biophysical, human, and institutional systems surrounding water use in Santa Cruz County, California, and the roles that a nonprofit advocacy organization can play within that framework. These roles are illustrated through an exploration of citizen involvement and advocacy in the comparative cases of the scwd2 Desalination Program in Santa Cruz, California, and a proposed wastewater …
Sensitivity Of Stormwater Management Solutions To Spatial Scale, Jeffrey Michael Barich
Sensitivity Of Stormwater Management Solutions To Spatial Scale, Jeffrey Michael Barich
Master's Theses
Urbanization has considerably altered natural hydrology of urban watersheds by increasing runoff volume, producing higher and faster peak flows, and reducing water quality. Efforts to minimize or avoid these impacts, for example by implementing low impact development (LID) practices, are gaining momentum. Designing effective and economical stormwater management practices at a watershed scale is challenging; LIDs are commonly designed at site scales, considering local hydrologic conditions (i.e., one LID at a time). A number of empirical studies have documented hydrologic and water quality improvements achieved by LIDs. However, watershed scale effectiveness of LIDs has not been well studied. Considering cost, …
