Synthesis And Characterization Of Methacrylated Hyaluronan-Based Hydrogels For Tissue Engineering, Keegan Bradley Compton
Synthesis And Characterization Of Methacrylated Hyaluronan-Based Hydrogels For Tissue Engineering, Keegan Bradley Compton
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Polymers have revolutionized the field of tissue engineering due to the countless possibilities of scaffolds that can be constructed from such a material. Through conjugation of other functional groups onto a polymer backbone, the mechanical properties of polymers can be controlled and has the ability to span a wide range of strengths, allowing for application in multiple tissue environments. One such polymer, hyaluronic acid (HA), is a natural polysaccharide found most abundantly in the extracellular matrix (ECM) of connective tissues with structural, lubricating, and wound healing functions in the human body; for this reason, HA has great potential for utilization …

An Evaluative Questionnaire For The 26-Hours Of Science And Technology In Agriculture, Chelsi Faria
Agricultural Education and Communication
The purpose of this project was to create an evaluative survey for the high school student and teachers who participated in California Polytechnic State University’s “26-Hours of Science and Technology in Agriculture” Program. The survey was created to collect data to not only to better the program, but to see the students and teachers’ opinions. Collecting answers from participating students and teachers would benefit the 26-Hour Program greatly. With the collected data, future planning teams could make changes appropriate the input received that would benefit the effectiveness of the program overall. Creating an evaluation system started by researching agriculture education …
Barriers To Adoption Of Methane Digester Technology On California Dairies, Desiree Lee Libarle
Barriers To Adoption Of Methane Digester Technology On California Dairies, Desiree Lee Libarle
Master's Theses
The goal of this research was to analyze the barriers to adoption of methane digesters on California dairies. Methane digesters have long existed as a technology in the dairy industry, both in the United States and abroad. Much research has been done to attest to the viability and economic sustainability of methane digesters; however in 2014, there were 26 dairies in California that have methane digesters installed, and of these, only 17 of those were still in operation, according to the USEPA AgStar Anaerobic Digester Database. Hence, the question remains, as to why this technology has not been widely adopted …

Diversity Of Cortical Interneurons In Primates: The Role Of The Dorsal Proliferative Niche, Nevena V. Radonjić, Fani Memi, Xiaojing Yu, Igor Jakovcevski, Nada Zecevic
UCHC Articles - Research
Evolutionary elaboration of tissues starts with changes in the genome and location of the stem cells. For example, GABAergic interneurons of the mammalian neocortex are generated in the ventral telencephalon and migrate tangentially to the neocortex, in contrast to the projection neurons originating in the ventricular/subventricular zone (VZ/SVZ) of the dorsal telencephalon. In human and nonhuman primates, evidence suggests that an additional subset of neocortical GABAergic interneurons is generated in the cortical VZ and a proliferative niche, the outer SVZ. The origin, magnitude, and significance of this species-specific difference are not known. We use a battery of assays applicable to …
The Conservative-Libertarian Turn In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Steven J. Heyman
The Conservative-Libertarian Turn In First Amendment Jurisprudence, Steven J. Heyman
All Faculty Scholarship
Conservative constitutional jurisprudence in the United States has an important libertarian dimension. In recent years, a conservative majority of the Supreme Court has strengthened the constitutional protections for property rights, recognized an individual right to own firearms, imposed limits on the welfare state and the powers of the federal government, cut back on affirmative action, and held that closely held corporations have a right to religious liberty that permits them to deny contraceptive coverage to their female employees. This libertarian streak also can be seen in decisions on freedom of speech and association. In several leading cases, conservative judges have …
Aristotle’S Voluntary/Deliberate Distinction, Double-Effect Reasoning, And Ethical Relevance, Thomas A. Cavanaugh
Aristotle’S Voluntary/Deliberate Distinction, Double-Effect Reasoning, And Ethical Relevance, Thomas A. Cavanaugh
Philosophy
I articulate Aristotle’s account of the voluntary with a view to weighing in on a contemporary ethical debate concerning the moral relevance of the intended/foreseen (i/f) distinction. Natural lawyers employ the i/f distinction to contrast consequentially comparable acts with different intentional structures. They propose that consequentially comparable acts of, for example, terror and tactical bombing morally differ based on their diverse structures of intention. Opponents of DER hold that one best captures the widely acknowledged intuitive appeal of the distinction by contrasting agents, not acts. These thinkers hold that the terror bomber differs from the tactical bomber while terror and …

The Effect Of Weather During Rearing On Morphometric Traits Of Juvenile Cliff Swallows, Erin A. Roche, Mary Bomberger Brown, Charles R. Brown
The Effect Of Weather During Rearing On Morphometric Traits Of Juvenile Cliff Swallows, Erin A. Roche, Mary Bomberger Brown, Charles R. Brown
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Episodes of food deprivation may change how nestling birds allocate energy to the growth of skeletal and feather morphological traits during development. Cliff swallows (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) are colonial, insectivorous birds that regularly experience brief periods of severe weather–induced food deprivation during the nesting season which may affect offspring development. We investigated how annual variation in timing of rearing and weather were associated with length of wing and tail, skeletal traits, and body mass in juvenile cliff swallows reared in southwestern Nebraska during 2001–2006. As predicted under conditions of food deprivation, nestling skeletal and feather measurements were generally smaller …

This study discusses the issue of whether the influence of Disney films affects the girls who watch these films once they become adult women. Disney "princess" films are animated movies produced by Disney, featuring princess characters such as Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine and Pocahontas. The purpose of this study is to discover how watching Disney princess films as a child affects the decisions adult women aged 20-37 make when it comes to their love lives. A survey, completed by 40 females aged 20-37, was conducted and relating literature was explored for data collection. The surveys were analyzed …
Oral History Of Professional Theater Beaders In New York City, Mary Lalon Alexander
Oral History Of Professional Theater Beaders In New York City, Mary Lalon Alexander
Theses & Dissertations
A historic division between fine and mechanical arts led to a marginalization of certain art forms including textile beading and embroidery. Despite the opulence of beading and embroidery in theater costumes, there is limited documented history and scant scholarly literature about professional beading and the beaders who create the costumes. The aims of this study were to construct a history of professional theater beading in New York and to examine the oral histories of professional theater beaders. This qualitative oral history study included 12 participants who work in the professional beading industry. Open-ended interviews took place in New York City …

Theses & Dissertations
This research examines corporate diversity programs and initiatives from the perspective of the self-described diverse employee because they are intended to be the recipient of the benefits of diversity programs and initiatives. The research question is: In what ways have self-described diverse employees found that the diversity programs in their workplaces helped or hindered others in relating to them in ways that recognize their knowledge, skills, and abilities and allow them to be treated with respect and civility. To obtain information about the research question, a qualitative study using basic interpretive methodology was used which included face to face personal …

Shrine Analysis, Anastasia Benko
Shrine Analysis, Anastasia Benko
Architecture Thesis Prep
Shrines are used throughout different cultures to mark graves, sites of importance, and or events that may have occurred, and any number of things that may holds significance to an individual or a group of people. The interest in studying these constructs, however, comes from the shared aesthetic qualities that are utilized in many different families of shrines to create a sense of spirituality, or more specifically, to create a heightened awareness of an individual’s understanding of him/her self. Architecture can learn from the vernacular of shrines in order to understand the inherent spirituality of a structure. This vernacular is …

Unlocking The Architectural Lessons Of Life On For Life At, The Beach: Mixed-Use Housing And Planning, Flagler Beach, Florida, David O'Bryan
Architecture Thesis Prep
Flagler Beach, Florida will be the stage for this architectural experiment. Chosen for its efforts to hold on to it’s vernacular architecture, economic mix, cultural diversity and environmental expression, while challenged by the pressures of tourism and gentrification that it may not even know exists. Its origin was that of a destination place that converted to a hometown community that now has difficult decisions to make possibly loosing what makes it currently a great place. Flagler Beach could fall prey, as other beach communities have, and become forced under development pressures, into a place that it never intended to be.

I’m interested in the kind of constituency that thinks something along these lines: that
thinks, “I can’t believe in any of this stuff. I can’t believe in the doctrines. I don’t think these
doctrines are right. But,” a very important but, “I love Christmas carols. I really like the art
of Mantegna. I really like looking at old churches. I really like turning the pages of the Old
Testament.” Whatever it may be, you know the kind of thing I’m talking about -- people
who are attracted to the ritualistic side, the moralistic, communal side of religion, but can’t

Perception, Megan Rand
Perception, Megan Rand
Architecture Thesis Prep
In today’s age of technology, online media allows wider access
to architectural photos and information. Through images provided
by architectural firms, magazines, amateur photographers, official
websites, and social media, one can experience a building to
an extent, without ever visiting that physical place. This greatly
impacts the discipline of architecture, as the general public is
able to view, interpret, and criticize works without the consent
or the input of the architect. Before the rise of social media,
architects had great control over what information and images
were released for a project, controlling the perception of the
general public.
Thickening: A 21st Century Approach For Resilience In Infrastructure, Marco Antonio Ravini
Thickening: A 21st Century Approach For Resilience In Infrastructure, Marco Antonio Ravini
Architecture Thesis Prep
Infrastructure should be designed for higher RESILIENCE, not permanence. Rather than over-engineer to resist the inevitable failure of individual components, the next generation of public infrastructure needs to exceed its technical specifications and seek opportunistic hybridity between systems. In doing so, new possibilities for multi-layered use/outputs emerge which contribute to a more productive and resilient infrastructural lifespan.

A few years back, while reading The New York Times as I am wont to do (I’m one of the diehards who still insists of getting a hard copy at the campus bookstore every morning) I was startled by a picture illustrating an article with the headline: “A Fierce Predator Makes a Home in the Suburbs.” Below the title was a photo of a ferocious creature attacking a bird feeder, with a diabolical expression on its face that made it look like something that came directly out of the …

Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski
Generational Inversions: 'Working' For Social Reproduction Amid Hiv In Swaziland, Casey Golomski
Anthropology
How do people envision social reproduction when regular modes of generational succession and continuity are disrupted in the context of HIV/AIDS? How and where can scholars identify local ideas for restoring intergenerational practices of obligation and dependency that produce mutuality rather than conflict across age groups? Expanding from studies of HIV/AIDS and religion in Africa, this article pushes for an analytic engagement with ritual as a space and mode of action to both situate local concerns about and practices for restoring dynamics of social reproduction. It describes how the enduring HIV/AIDS epidemic in Swaziland contoured age patterns of mortality where …

Circadian Rhythms Of Crawling And Swimming In The Nudibranch Mollusc Melibe Leonina, Winsor H. Watson Iii, James M. Newcomb, Lauren E. Kirouac, Amanda A. Naimie
Jackson Estuarine Laboratory
Daily rhythms of activity driven by circadian clocks are expressed by many organisms, including molluscs. We initiated this study, with the nudibranch Melibe leonina, with four goals in mind: (1) determine which behaviors are expressed with a daily rhythm; (2) investigate which of these rhythmic behaviors are controlled by a circadian clock; (3) determine if a circadian clock is associated with the eyes or optic ganglia of Melibe, as it is in several other gastropods; and (4) test the hypothesis that Melibe can use extraocular photoreceptors to synchronize its daily rhythms to natural light-dark cycles. To address these goals, we …
