Well-Born: Black Women And The Infertility Crisis No One Is Talking About, Kaara Baptiste

Capstones

Black women are twice as likely to experience infertility than white women, but are less likely to seek treatment or to have successful fertility results once treated. Despite this alarming number, this topic is not often discussed, even among the black community. My narrative piece t tells the story of a black woman confronting her infertility diagnosis and the role her race played in her fertility treatment, while exploring the role racism and sexuality have had in keeping this issue in the shadows.

Peeking Behind The Curtain: The Operations And Funding Priorities Of Rural Private Foundations, Dorothy Norris-Tirrell, Brandi Blessett, Claire Connolly Knox

The Foundation Review

This article examines the operations and funding priorities of rural private foundations in Florida, using data from the U.S. Census, the Urban Institute’s National Center for Charitable Statistics, and interviews with foundation leaders.

The study found that grantmaking by rural foundations is split between out-of-state and in-state giving, determined by the intent of a benefactor or the personal choices of a foundation founder and/ or family.

This finding presents opportunities for nonprofit organizations and community groups in rural counties to communicate community needs in order to retain a larger amount of foundation dollars in the foundation’s home state and county.

Effects Of Low-Level Laser Therapy On Matrix Metalloproteinase And Collagen Expression Of Tendon Cells, Chien-Hung Chen, Shih-Wei Hung, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Wen-Chung Tsai, Miao-Sui Lin, Tung-Yang Yu, Hsiang-Ning Chang Dec 2014

Effects Of Low-Level Laser Therapy On Matrix Metalloproteinase And Collagen Expression Of Tendon Cells, Chien-Hung Chen, Shih-Wei Hung, Jong-Hwei S. Pang, Wen-Chung Tsai, Miao-Sui Lin, Tung-Yang Yu, Hsiang-Ning Chang

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Objective: Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is commonly used to treat sports-related tendinopathy or tendon injury. However, scientific evidence of the effects and underlying molecular mechanisms of tendinopathy treatment remained limited. Tendon healing requires tenocyte migration to the repair site, followed by proliferation and synthesis of the extracellular matrix, including collagens. The study was designed to determine the effect of laser on the metabolism of collagen for injuried tendon repair, furthermore, become a foundation of the LLLT for tendon repair. Methods: Tendon cells from rat Achilles tendons were obtained to investigate the effect of LLLT on collagen metabolism in tendon repair. …

Traceable And Transparent Fishing In The Indian Ocean Addressing Iuu, Ghazi Salahuddin Dec 2014

Traceable And Transparent Fishing In The Indian Ocean Addressing Iuu, Ghazi Salahuddin

World Maritime University Dissertations

Traceability and transparency in fishing and the trade of fish products has been brought to the forefront of the international fisheries policy agenda and is recognized as a core issue. Governments have awakened to the fact that IUU (illegal, unreported and unregulated) fishing has global impacts on the social, economic and ecological aspects of fisheries and therefore requires regional collaboration to combat this global issue. Developing countries severely suffer from the effects of IUU, particularly within their exclusive economic zones (EEZ) due to lack of resources and infrastructure to properly manage waters under their jurisdiction and in remote areas where …

Port Readiness In Facing Globalization: Indonesian Case Study, Melda Kamil Ariadno, Arie Afriansyah, Yetty Komalasari Dewi

Indonesia Law Review

International trade cannot be separated from the role of international shipping. More than 80% of goods transported through sea from a region to another, from one Country to another Country. Since the dawn of the voyage, port cannot be separated from the voyage itself. Adequate port will ensure a good international shipping. Increasing number of international shipping also means increasing volume of international trade. With a variety of factors such as geographical factor, natural resources, and population, Indonesia should be a key player in international trade by sea. However, the reality is still far from ideal, especially when compared with …

The Status Of Fishes In The Missouri River, Nebraska: Sauger (Sander Canadensis), Kirk D. Steffensen, Sam Stukel, Dane A. Shuman

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Early fisheries investigation of the Missouri River fish community indicated that Sauger were common throughout Nebraska, including all major Missouri River tributaries. However due to many factors, their current range is restricted to the Missouri River and the lower reaches of a few tributaries. Hesse (1994) recommended listing Sauger as a state endangered species but this recommendation was never implemented. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to reevaluate the current population status of Sauger in the Missouri River along Nebraska’s border. Over 2,100 Sauger have been captured from the Missouri River along Nebraska’s eastern border since 2003. Sauger were …

Throughout the past century, the Missouri River has been highly modified which has negatively affected the native fish community. Previous research quantified the reduction of several native Cyprinidae species and made several recommendations to aid in recovery. However, these recommendations were not implemented. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to assess the current population trends of eight native cyprinid species and develop the current management objectives. Over 335,000 fish were collected from the Missouri River along Nebraska’s eastern border with mini-fyke nets and otter trawls from 2003 to 2012. Target Cyprinidae species consisted of less than five percent (n …

Magic As A Form Of Oppression Towards Women: Gender Ideology In Maleficent (2014), Thalia Shelyndra Wendranirsa

Paradigma: Jurnal Kajian Budaya

Previous studies propose that female protagonists in Disney movies are represented based on gender construction that causes oppression towards women, but in 2014, Disney produces Maleficent which offers different characterization and theme opposing the aforementioned gender construction. By focusing on its different female main character and theme, this paper aims to see what kind of oppression occurs and how Disney presents their gender ideology in the movie. The findings reveal that even though Maleficent is portrayed as a powerful woman, she is also oppressed. Her magical power becomes a trigger of her oppression since men consider Maleficent’s power as a …

During the past decades, anticancer immunotherapy has evolved from a promising therapeutic option to a robust clinical reality. Many immunotherapeutic regimens are now approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and the European Medicines Agency for use in cancer patients, and many others are being investigated as standalone therapeutic interventions or combined with conventional treatments in clinical studies. Immunotherapies may be subdivided into "passive" and "active" based on their ability to engage the host immune system against cancer. Since the anticancer activity of most passive immunotherapeutics (including tumor-targeting monoclonal antibodies) also relies on the host immune system, this classification …

A Western-Fed Diet Increases Plasma Hdl And Ldl-Cholesterol Levels In Apod–/– Mice, Kamilah Ali, Ehab M. Abo-Ali, M. D. Kabir, Bethany Riggins, Susanna Nguy, Lisa Li, Ujala Srivastava, Su Mya Mya Thinn

Publications and Research

Objective Plasma apolipoprotein (apo)D, a ubiquitously expressed protein that binds small hydrophobic ligands, is found mainly on HDL particles. According to studies of human genetics and lipid disorders, plasma apoD levels positively correlate with HDL-cholesterol and apoAI levels. Thus, we tested the hypothesis that apoD was a regulator of HDL metabolism. Methods & Results We compared the plasma lipid and lipoprotein profiles of wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice with apoD−/− mice on a C57BL/6 background after receiving a high fat-high cholesterol diet for 12 weeks. ApoD−/− mice had higher HDL-cholesterol levels (61±13-apoD−/− vs. 52±10-WT-males; 37±11-apoD−/− vs. 22±2 WT-female) than WT mice …

National Vs. International Schools: Factors Influencing School Choice In Egypt; The Voices Of Parents And Students., Yasmine Alaa Khorshed

Theses and Dissertations

There are many national and international schools in Cairo today, and every year lots of parents make educational choices for their children. Those choices are based on various factors. This research explores the factors that influence parents to select a certain school type and not the other. It is an initial step into school research as an attempt to help educators and administrators understand parents’ and students’ priorities, needs and expectations when choosing a school. The research questions are: (1) What are the most and least important factors that parents consider when choosing a national/ international school for their children? …

The Effect Of Non Freeze-Dried Hydrogel-Cha On Fibroblast Proliferation, Ivan A. Wahyudi, Lea M. Nurwadji

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Bone damage can be caused by variety of surgical procedures. Bone reconstruction has been developed lately is tissue engineering techniques. One of materials that proved to be effective as a scaffold in tissue engineering is a hydrogel. The addition of carbonate apatite (CHA) will produce a hydrogel-CHA material which is believed to improve the mechanical properties and biological similarities with the original bone. Scaffold is considered an important aspect in the field of tissue engineering, because it’s ability to mimic extracellular matrix of the damaged tissue. Fibroblasts are mesenchymal cells that can be readily cultured in the laboratory and play …

Blurring Group Boundaries: The Impact Of Subgroup Threats On Global Citizenship, Stephen Reysen, Iva Katzarska-Miller, Phia S. Salter, Caroline Hirko

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

We examined the outcomes of an extinction threat (possible discontinuation of a group’s symbolic or actual existence) to one’s nation on global citizenship identification and related prosocial values. In Study 1, participants showed a drop in global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat). In Study 2, participants reported lower global citizenship identification when America was threatened (vs. absence of threat) and the perception that one’s normative environment did not support a global citizen identity mediated the relationship between threat and identification. Furthermore, the threat was shown to indirectly predict lower endorsement for prosocial values and behaviors …

Production of excess free radicals cause oxidative damage and degenerative diseases. Catalase enzyme is one of the endogenous intracellular antioxidant that can be reduced by oxidative stress conditions. The peel of red dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) as a potent exogenous antioxidants could support the internal enzyme activity to prevent free radicals. The aim of this research was to determine the effect of n-hexane fraction of H.polyrhizus’s peel and the dose that could increase activity of catalase. The peel was maserated with chloroform, then fractionated by n-hexane. Stress condition was achieved by five days fasting and swimming for 10 mins/day to …

Examining The Global Financial Crisis From A Virtue Theory Lens, Aliza D. Racelis Dec 2014

Examining The Global Financial Crisis From A Virtue Theory Lens, Aliza D. Racelis

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

As the financial crisis of 2008-9 has continued to affect the global economy, many wonder whether the proposed solutions contribute to a more stable financial system as well as to better human behaviour. While the Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission (FCIC) Report (2011) identified the factors essential to explaining the causes of the financial crisis as having included credit and housing bubbles, nontraditional mortgages, credit ratings and securitization, financial institutions concentrated correlated risk, leverage and liquidity risk, contagion risk, shock and panic, failure in virtue has also been very patent in the crisis, foremost of them being: excessive leverage and imprudent …

Lives In Fiction: Auto/Biographies As Theoretical Narratives, Dennis S. Erasga Dec 2014

Lives In Fiction: Auto/Biographies As Theoretical Narratives, Dennis S. Erasga

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Sociological imagination is an open invitation to theorize from the stories we tell about ourselves and others. More than self-expression, the sociological ethos of auto/biographical narration is to extend the reality of a solipsistic and exclusive existence into a common and public experience. In order to achieve this, the narrator must convert biographies into scribed realities. The narrating process, however, has unique epistemic anchorage (memory-based) and stylistic requirement (literary) that encage lived lives in a fictional genre, giving this mode of writing a unique interpretive lens that projects new visions of the social. Consequently for theorizing purposes, auto/biographies are meaning-claims …

The Filipino Social Imagination In Regional Context, Niels Mulder Dec 2014

The Filipino Social Imagination In Regional Context, Niels Mulder

Asia-Pacific Social Science Review

Whereas the theme of this essay consists of a summary comparison and evaluation of the contents of social studies in Thai, Indonesian, and Philippine schools, it centers on the Philippine curriculum in order to identify the principles underlying the general perception of things social that seem to hold in the former two nation-states, too. As it appears that said contents obscure rather than clarify social life, the predominant imagination remains rooted in the practice of everyday life, and so the question is asked whether Thai and Indonesian nationalistic indoctrination leads to a clearer picture of wider society and a relatively …

Distaste: Joyce Carol Oates And Food, David Rutledge

Bearing Witness: Joyce Carol Oates Studies

Distaste: Joyce Carol Oates and Food

Abstract

In many of her short stories and novels, Joyce Carol Oates depicts an unhealthy relationship with food. The range of these unhealthy relationships is wide, from overeating to the point of suicide, in Expensive People, to starving oneself in an attempt to deny one’s physical nature, in “Orange” and them. Overindulgence is a means for attempting to fill that space where the soul should be; undereating is often an attempt to deny one’s place in the social world. The eating disorders she portrays are rooted in both personal and social causes. …

Baseline Survey For Street Dogs In Guam, John D. Boone

Stray and Feral Animal Populations Collection

As is the case for many inhabited islands in Pacific region, dogs are common, including freeroaming street dogs that may be owned or unowned. Reproduction among dogs is largely unchecked, and many owned dogs do not receive adequate levels of basic care in the home or veterinary care when needed. For all of these reasons, Humane Society International (HSI) is exploring options for improving the management of street dog populations and promoting better treatment and care of all dogs on Guam and on the nearby islands of Rota and Saipan. One of the initial steps in this process was to …
