Predicting The Popularity Of Web 2.0 Items Based On User Comments, Xiangnan He, Ming Gao, Min-Yen Kan, Yiqun Liu, Kazunari Sugiyama
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In the current Web 2.0 era, the popularity of Web resources fluctuates ephemerally, based on trends and social interest. As a result, content-based relevance signals are insufficient to meet users' constantly evolving information needs in searching for Web 2.0 items. Incorporating future popularity into ranking is one way to counter this. However, predicting popularity as a third party (as in the case of general search engines) is difficult in practice, due to their limited access to item view histories. To enable popularity prediction externally without excessive crawling, we propose an alternative solution by leveraging user comments, which are more accessible …
Students’ Connectedness To Nature In Relation To Academic Major And Learning Style, Brett Kelly
Students’ Connectedness To Nature In Relation To Academic Major And Learning Style, Brett Kelly
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
The purpose of this research is to explore the relation between students’ connectedness to nature, academic major type and learning style. This study categorized student’s academic major into whether it was oriented toward business/advertising or natural resources/agriculture. Understanding students’ relationship with nature is important in a world that faces many environmental challenges. Studying academic major type and learning style provides references for chosen career paths and how students learn most efficiently. By running correlational analyses of these variables, more is understood about how connectedness to nature plays a role in students’ academic choices and learning preferences. Results showed a significant …

Consequences For Cleanup: Epa Gets Serious About Weak Watershed Improvement Plans, Rena I. Steinzor, Anne Havemann

In a landmark series of reports issued on June 26, 2014, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) put the seven jurisdictions that pollute the Chesapeake Bay on notice that their plans for reducing nitrogen, phosphorous, and sediment fall short of where they must be to make cleanup by 2025 a reality. By EPA’s reckoning, Pennsylvania and Delaware were furthest off the mark, but Maryland, New York, Virginia, and West Virginia face EPA action if they fail to substantially improve their plans. Of the seven jurisdictions, only Washington, D.C. escaped serious criticism.

Despite the performative turn of the 1990s, a disjuncture has persisted between performance studies, though self-admittedly expansive and porous, and much of the scholarship produced around the diverse acts constituting Latina/o performance. The books reviewed here engage Latina/o performance on its own terms and terrains while reconceiving the limits of the archive as well as the subjects and substance of performance. Myriad works considered here further intervene in debates regarding critical regionalism and transnationalism within Chicana/o and Latina/o studies, as well as American studies, by embracing a hemispheric approach while also being attuned to the inflections of the local. Also …

Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is an inherited chronic respiratory obstructive disease with randomized body laterality and infertility, resulting from cilia and sperm dysmotility. PCD is characterized by clinical variability and extensive genetic heterogeneity, associated with different cilia ultrastructural defects and mutations identified in >20 genes. Next generation sequencing (NGS) technologies therefore present a promising approach for genetic diagnosis which is not yet in routine use. We developed a targeted panel-based NGS pipeline to identify mutations by sequencing of selected candidate genes in 70 genetically undefined PCD patients. This detected loss-of-function RSPH1 mutations in four individuals with isolated central pair (CP) …

A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase with ThromboSpondin motifs16 (ADAMTS-16) is a member of a family of metalloproteinases. Using a novel zinc-finger nuclease based gene-edited rat model harboring a targeted mutation of the Adamts16 locus, we previously reported this gene to be linked to blood pressure regulation. Here we document our observation with this model that Adamts16 is essential for normal development of the testis. Absence of Adamts16 in the homozygous Adamts16(mutant) males resulted in cryptorchidism and male sterility. Heterozygous Adamts16(mutant) males were normal, indicating that this is a recessive trait. Testes of homozygous Adamts16(mutant) males were significantly smaller with significant histological …

Correlative species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used in studies of climate change impacts, yet are often criticized for failing to incorporate disturbance processes that can influence species distributions. Here we use two temporally independent data sets of vascular plant distributions, climate data, and fire atlas data to examine the influence of disturbance history on SDM projection accuracy through time in the mountain ranges of California, USA. We used hierarchical partitioning to examine the influence of fire occurrence on the distribution of 144 vascular plant species and built a suite of SDMs to examine how the inclusion of fire-related predictors …

Ontogenetic Investigation Of Underwater Hearing Capabilities In Loggerhead Sea Turtles (Caretta Caretta) Using A Dual Testing Approach, Ashley L. Lavender, Soraya M. Bartol, Ian K. Bartol
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Sea turtles reside in different acoustic environments with each life history stage and may have different hearing capacity throughout ontogeny. For this study, two independent yet complementary techniques for hearing assessment, i.e. behavioral and electrophysiological audiometry, were employed to (1) measure hearing in post-hatchling and juvenile loggerhead sea turtles Caretta caretta (19-62 cm straight carapace length) to determine whether these migratory turtles exhibit an ontogenetic shift in underwater auditory detection and (2) evaluate whether hearing frequency range and threshold sensitivity are consistent in behavioral and electrophysiological tests. Behavioral trials first required training turtles to respond to known frequencies, a multi-stage, …

Functional Genomics Of Maize Endosperm Maturation And Protein Quality, Lingling Yuan
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Maize is one of the most important cereal crops and widely cultivated throughout the world. The study on maize kernel development including protein quality improvement is essential for removing dietary protein deficiency because of the lack of essential amino acids, especially lysine and tryptophan, in maize kernel. Quality Protein Maize (QPM) is a hard kernel variant of the high-lysine mutant, opaque-2. We created opaque QPM variants to identify opaque-2 modifier genes and to investigate deletion mutagenesis combined with Illumina sequencing as a maize functional genomics tool. A K0326Y-QPM deletion mutant, line 107, was null for the 27- and 50-kD …

Lateral Line Analogue Aids Vision In Successful Predator Evasion For The Brief Squid, Lolliguncula Brevis, Carly A. York, Ian K. Bartol
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Cephalopods have visual and mechanoreception systems that may be employed to sense and respond to an approaching predator. While vision presumably plays the dominant role, the importance of the lateral line analogue for predator evasion has not been examined in cephalopods. To test the respective roles of vision and the lateral line analogue, brief squid, Lolliguncula brevis, were observed in the presence of summer flounder, Paralichthys dentatus, under light and dark conditions with their lateral line analogue intact and ablated. Hair cell ablation was achieved through a pharmacological technique used for the first time on a cephalopod. The …

New Literacies Integration By Student Teacher/Cooperating Teacher Dyads In Elementary Schools: A Collective Case Study, Laurie A. Friedrich
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Situated in Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) and collaborative inquiry, this collective case study examines new literacies integration by student teacher/cooperating teacher (ST/CT) dyads supported by a coach in elementary schools. The study took place at a large Midwestern public school district where many STs from a large Midwestern public university complete their student teaching experience. Through detailed vignettes of five ST/CT dyads, this study provides an explicit view of varieties of dyad collaboration when a new literacies emphasis is included in the student teaching semester. Research questions prompt the examination of dyad new literacies integration through (a) enacting professional …
Non-Digestible Oligosaccharides: Anti-Adherence And Other Biological Properties, Maria I. Quintero-Villegas
Non-Digestible Oligosaccharides: Anti-Adherence And Other Biological Properties, Maria I. Quintero-Villegas
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Bacterial adherence is the first and one of the most important steps in bacterial pathogenesis. Adherence to host cell surfaces requires that the bacteria recognize specific receptors in the surface of epithelial cells. Therefore, agents that act as molecular decoys to interfere with adherence could be useful prophylactic treatments to prevent or mitigate the onset of infections. The goal of this research was to assess the ability of several food grade non-digestible oligosaccharides (NDOs) to act as molecular decoys and prevent bacterial adherence in vitro as well as in vivo. First, the antiadherence effect of specific species chitooligosaccharides (CHOS) …

Characterization Of Genetically Modified High Biomass Producing Tobacco Plant, Pankaj Singh Kuhar
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Global warming and peak oil has clouded our energy security. In light of this situation, bioethanol as emerged as one of the most amenable solutions to the problem. However bioethanol has its own shortcomings and transgenics seem imperative to exploit its full potential. A high biomass producing line in transgenic tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi) was identified during a routine genetic transformation, termed giant recombinant (GR). To characterize the phenotype of the giant line, growth rate and lignocellulosic composition was analyzed relative to the non-transgenic control line. The GR line accounted for 240% more biomass than the untransformed line …

“Whoa”-Ing Equine Clones’ Registration: Establishing Procompetitive Benefits To Counter The Anticompetitive Argument Against American Quarter Horse Association’S Ban On Clones, Alyssa Freeman
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This Note examines Abraham and Veneklasen Joint Venture v. American Quarter Horse Association, in which a United States district court ruled that the American Quarter Horse Association’s rule banning clones of registered quarter horses from also being registered violated section 1 of the Sherman Antitrust Act. The author explores potential procompetitive justifications that AQHA has established for its rule, including the negative impact clones would likely have on the genetic variation of the breed and genetic diseases. The author argues that the district court erred by overlooking the plausibility of the justifications and that the rule of reason analysis should …

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in distance learning in higher education. Given this, it is extremely important to understand faculty attitudes about distance education, not only because they can vary widely, but also because it is the faculty, through their design and implementation of online courses, that will shape the future of distance education. The purpose of the present study is to uncover faculty attitudes about distance education in a specific context, namely that of a mid-sized mid-Atlantic state university. Data sources consist of posts from two of six discussion boards written by 21 faculty participants …
