Milk Fatty Acid Composition Of Perinatal And Foraging Steller Sea Lions: Examination From Pup Stomachs, Carlene Nicole Miller
Milk Fatty Acid Composition Of Perinatal And Foraging Steller Sea Lions: Examination From Pup Stomachs, Carlene Nicole Miller
Marine Biology
To investigate the relationship of milk fatty acid composition between perinatal and foraging Steller sea lions and within each maternal state (i.e., perinatal or foraging), milk samples were collected in 2010 and 2011 via gastric intubation from Steller sea lion pups on a small rookery in the central Gulf of Alaska. Subsamples of initial milk samples were taken over four hours post-collection to examine changes of fatty acids within milk over time. Maternal states of lactating females of sampled pups were determined via remotely operated video cameras on the rookery. Fatty acid composition within milk, collected from Steller sea lion …
Using Strontium Isotopes To Track Pacific Salmon Migrations In Alaska, Sean Reiss Brennan
Using Strontium Isotopes To Track Pacific Salmon Migrations In Alaska, Sean Reiss Brennan
Marine Biology
Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are an important cultural, ecological, and economic natural resource in Alaska. Not only do salmon maintain an important mechanism of nutrient transport between marine, aquatic, and terrestrial ecosystems, but they also provide a sustainable food and economic resource for human communities. A challenging issue in the management, conservation, and research of Pacific salmon is tracking their responses to perturbations across the multiple scales of population structure that characterize these species. Research has shown how the inherent biodiversity of Pacific salmon imparts resiliency to environmental change, and temporal stability to their overall productivity and the human systems …

Design And Development Of A Miniature In Vivo Surgical Robot With Distributed Motor Control For Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery, Eric J. Markvicka
Design And Development Of A Miniature In Vivo Surgical Robot With Distributed Motor Control For Laparoendoscopic Single-Site Surgery, Eric J. Markvicka
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Paradigm shifts in invasiveness, recovery time, cosmesis, and cost have been seen within the field of general surgery through major advances in surgical technology. Some of the most advanced types of general surgery now include Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS), LaparoEndoscopic Single-Site (LESS) surgery, and Natural Orifice Translumenal Endoscopic Surgery (NOTES). One of the newest and rapidly developing catalysts is robotic platforms. Such platforms have improved ergonomics and control, increased workspace and dexterity, and have surpassed the efficacy of many non-robotic platforms such as traditional laparoscopic surgical tools. This thesis presents the design and development of a four-degree-of-freedom (4- DOF) miniature …
The Effect Of Maternal Aldosterone Levels On The Expression Of 11b-Hsd Isoenzymes In Normal And Hypertensive Rat Placentae, Nicole Jorissen
The Effect Of Maternal Aldosterone Levels On The Expression Of 11b-Hsd Isoenzymes In Normal And Hypertensive Rat Placentae, Nicole Jorissen
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
In this project, we developed a Western blotting procedure to semi-quantitate levels of 11β-HSD1 and 11β-HSD2 in whole cell extracts. Then, we applied this technique to analyze the effect of reduced maternal aldosterone levels on the expression of 11β-HSD1 and 11β-HSD2 isoenzymes in the placental tissue in both normal and hypertensive rats. These enzymes control levels of glucocorticoids which compete for aldosterone’s mineralocorticoid receptor. Overstimulation of this receptor results in hypertension. If aldosterone levels decrease, levels of the enzymes controlling active glucocorticoid concentrations might change to compensate for the lowered aldosterone levels. Decreased placental 11β-HSD2 expression could affect hypertension in …
Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia Makepe, Keratilwe Bodilenyane, Kgomotso Montsi
Governance Of Land And Natural Resource For Sustainable Development In Botswana: Possible Lessons For The Agricultural And Tourism Sectors, David Sebudubudu, Patricia Makepe, Keratilwe Bodilenyane, Kgomotso Montsi
International Conference on African Development
Realizing sustainable development is a major challenge for most African states. Economic development in most African countries is largely centered on the exploitation of natural resources, particularly minerals. Rather than facilitate development, the exploitation of natural resources in most countries, has been a source of adverse outcomes. That is, natural resources led to ‘the resource curse’, owing in part to bad leadership and governance. Through good leadership and governance, Botswana emerged differently. The country transformed itself to a middle income status through the prudent exploitation and management of mineral resources; making Botswana one of the few resource rich countries to …
Reflecting On Multi-Party Mediation, Michele Straube
Reflecting On Multi-Party Mediation, Michele Straube
Environmental Dispute Resolution Program
Many traditional legal disputes involve multiple parties. Family disputes often involve the two spouses and a multitude of family members. Business disputes can involve multiple partners, suppliers and customers. Disputes relating to construction projects usually include the project proponent, the project designer, as well as multiple contractors and sub-contractors. These traditional multi-party legal disputes can benefit from mediation, where a neutral third party facilitates the negotiation discussion between the parties, helps the parties find common ground and creates focus out of the potential chaos.
Asymmetric Temporal Interactions Of Sound-Evoked Excitatory And Inhibitory Inputs In The Mouse Auditory Midbrain, Munenori Ono, Douglas L. Oliver
Asymmetric Temporal Interactions Of Sound-Evoked Excitatory And Inhibitory Inputs In The Mouse Auditory Midbrain, Munenori Ono, Douglas L. Oliver
UCHC Articles - Research
In the auditory midbrain, synaptic mechanisms responsible for the precise temporal coding of inputs in the brainstem are absent. Instead, in the inferior colliculus (IC), the diverse temporal firing patterns must be coded by other synaptic mechanisms, about which little is known. Here, we demonstrate the temporal characteristics of sound-evoked excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (seEPSCs and seIPSCs, respectively) in vivo in response to long-duration tones. The seEPSCs and seIPSCs differ in the variability of their temporal properties. The seEPSCs have either early or late current peaks, and the early-peaked currents may be either transient or sustained varieties. The seIPSCs …

Exposure Of Mice To Chronic Hypoxia Attenuates Pulmonary Arterial Contractile Responses To Acute Hypoxia By Increases In Extracellular Hydrogen Peroxide, Dhara Patel, Raed Alhawaj, Michael S. Wolin
NYMC Faculty Publications
Exposing mice to a chronic hypoxic treatment (10% oxygen, 21 days) that promotes pulmonary hypertension was observed to attenuate the pulmonary vasoconstriction response to acute hypoxia (HPV) both in vivo and in isolated pulmonary arteries. Since catalase restored the HPV response in isolated arteries, it appeared to be attenuated by extracellular hydrogen peroxide. Chronic hypoxia promoted the detection of elevated lung superoxide, extracellular peroxide, extracellular SOD expression, and protein kinase G (PKG) activation [based on PKG dimerization and vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP) phosphorylation], suggesting increased generation of extracellular peroxide and PKG activation may contribute to the suppression of HPV. Aorta from …

Cytochrome P-450, family 2, subfamily c, polypeptide 44 (Cyp2c44) epoxygenase metabolizes arachidonic acid (AA) to epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) in kidney and vascular tissues. In the present study, we used real-time quantitative PCR techniques to examine the effect of high salt or high K(+) (HK) intake on the expression of Cyp2c44, a major Cyp2c epoxygenase in the mouse kidney. We detected Cyp2c44 in the proximal convoluted tubule, thick ascending limb, distal convoluted tubule (DCT)/connecting tubule (CNT), and collecting duct (CD). A high-salt diet increased the expression of Cyp2c44 in the thick ascending limb and DCT/CNT but not in the proximal convoluted …

Pharmacology, Physiology and Toxicology
Growing clinical and experimental evidence suggests that sterile inflammation contributes to alcoholic liver disease (ALD). High mobility group box-1 (HMGB1) is highly induced during liver injury; however, a link between this alarmin and ALD has not been established. Thus, the aim of this work was to determine whether HMGB1 contributes to the pathogenesis of ALD. Liver biopsies from patients with ALD showed a robust increase in HMGB1 expression and translocation, which correlated with disease stage, compared with healthy explants. Similar findings were observed in chronic ethanol-fed wild-type (WT) mice. Using primary cell culture, we validated the ability of hepatocytes from …

The calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) is abundant in the brain, where it makes important contributions to synaptic organization and homeostasis, including playing an essential role in synaptic plasticity and memory. Four genes encode isoforms of CaMKII (α, β, δ, γ), with CaMKIIα and CaMKIIβ highly expressed in the brain. Decades of molecular and cellular research, as well as the use of a large number of CaMKIIα mutant mouse lines, have provided insight into the pivotal roles of CaMKIIα in brain plasticity and cognition. However, less is known about the CaMKIIβ isoform. We report the development and extensive behavioral and …

Models For A Carbon Constrained, Reliable Biofuel Supply Chain Network Design And Management, Mohammad Marufuzzaman
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation studies two important problems in the field of biomass supply chain network. In the first part of the dissertation, we study the impact of different carbon regulatory policies such as carbon cap, carbon tax, carbon cap-and-trade and carbon offsetmechanism on the design and management of a biofuel supply chain network under both deterministic and stochastic settings. These mathematical models identify locations and production capacities for biocrude production plants by exploring the trade-offs that exist between transportations costs, facility investment costs and emissions. The model is solved using a modified L-shaped algorithm. We used the state of Mississippi as …
Popc Phospholipid Bilayer Failure Under Biaxial Deformations Using Molecular Dynamics, Michael Anthony Murphy
Popc Phospholipid Bilayer Failure Under Biaxial Deformations Using Molecular Dynamics, Michael Anthony Murphy
Theses and Dissertations
Mechanical injuries to the cell often lead to disruptions of the cell’s phospholipid bilayer membrane and potential detrimental effects including cell death. Understanding the mechanical states required to disrupt the phospholipid bilayer would result in better multiscale constitutive models and further knowledge of cell injury. The objectives of this research were to perform biaxial deformations of the phospholipid bilayer to quantify phospholipid bilayer disruption and to identify potential parameters that can be used in multiscale constitutive equations. We show that the von Mises stress, 26.6-61.1, increases linearly with the von Mises strain rate, 1.7e8-6.7e8, and that the strain at failure …
